    Sad Souls

    Posted: 08 May 2020 01:10 AM PDT

One of the many things Dark Souls is known for is its attention to detail, whether it's the detailed environments, armor and weapons, plus completely-rendered landscapes in the distance (which is also a major framerate eater for scrub PCs like mine).

I do feel, however, that there's a certain element that doesn't get enough affection, which is a select few NPCs in the game who tell certain lore without a single word uttered.

    1. Black Iron Tarkus- All we know of him is his status as one of the knights of Berenike, wearing a mighty set of armor, with shield and greatsword in hand. We later find him in Anor Londo, having met his demise either at the hands of the numerous Painting Guardians or simply by losing his balance on the precarious walkways high above Ariamis' painting, after traversing a flying buttress and breaking through a window on a balcony. Most players would simply walk away contentedly after acquiring his armor set and greatshield, without giving it a second thought.
    2. Reah of Thorolund- Young and inexperienced, Reah was doomed as Petrus seems to have been planning his betrayal of her from the start. Even if she makes it out of the Tomb of the Giants, she may yet be killed by Petrus at the Undead Parish whilst kneeling in prayer, full of regret and disappointment in herself for being so foolish. If we purchase all of her miracles, Reah is then kidnapped by one of Seath's channelers shortly after, and imprisoned in the Archives' prison tower where she presumably hollows. At this point, the Chosen Undead has no choice to but to mercy-kill her, gaining her Ivory Talisman in the process.
    3. Witch Beatrice- I've always admired that she was described as "self-made", able to cast sorceries despite never having been a formal student at Vinheim. She is most likely an ancient being who, along with Artorias and the Chosen Undead, has braved the abyss. Her body is later found on a ledge in the Valley of Drakes, with her robes and catalyst to be gained upon looting. I thought it was rather depressing for her to die alone, like Tarkus, after having been through so much yet with so little impact on the Chosen Undead's path to acquiring all the Lord Souls. Additionally, there is a "Child Beatrice" in the game files, originally intended to be in the Abysswalker DLC/Remastered version.
    4. The lone Bloathead Sorcerer in Oolacile Township- As if retaining the last bit of her humanity to refrain from harming the player, this particular individual simply stands on a ledge, staring into nothingness, perhaps reminiscing warm thoughts, or the terrible fate which she succumbed to. When killed, she drops an "I'm Sorry!" carving, perhaps something she was clutching as a message to the one who might put her out of her misery. This small detail added depth to the tragedy of Oolacile for me.
    5. Hawkeye Gough- An eloquently-spoken, swell guy who has resigned himself to a lonely existence making archtree carvings in a tower. Though not actually blind, Gough has failed to realize that the citizens of Oolacile have slathered his helmet visor with pine resin as a result of their misconception about him being a "brutish giant". One of the four knights of Gwyn, and one of two (of those same four knights) who don't actually try to kill you on sight.
    6. The two crying Pisacas in the Duke's Archives' prison tower- Female victims of Seath's dastardly Josef Mengele-ish research into living beings, who were most likely members of the Princess' Guard Covenant, as they drop miracles upon death. These two, out of the bunch, will refuse to harm you despite being attacked. I've always viewed killing them as an act of mercy, unlike their more aggressive brethren.
    7. The Wolf & Hornet rings- You might already know about Ciaran and Artorias, and the ill-fated journey of the latter. After Artorias is slain (and his honor restored by the true victor over the abyss, who is the Chosen Undead), Ciaran puts up a makeshift grave in the arena, where she politely asks you for the soul of her "dear friend", but we know from Gough's cut dialogue that she had romantic feelings for Artorias. Knowing she was hiding that grief and a terrible sadness when politely asking for his soul, which she wanted to pay respect with, I always gave it up. We can later find Ciaran's curled-up body behind Artorias' grave in Darkroot Garden, still bearing her Hornet Ring. As for the Wolf Ring, a grave robber most likely ended up being killed by Sif or something else in the woods after nabbing it, with his/her lootable corpse slumped on a ledge.
    8. Oscar, Knight of Astora- If the Chosen Undead ever made a list of people he should ever be grateful for, Oscar has to be at the top of that list. Without this good man, we would have remained in the Northern Undead Asylum until the end of time, reaching a point where we would have become just another random hollow who never made it to Lordran in the first place. When you dispatch him upon your return to the asylum, offer a prayer or a simple bow, lest you forget that Lordran has its share of decent, honorable beings as well.

I'd mention the usual suspects such as Sif (and how you get to fight Manus with him in the Chasm), my Sunbro Solaire, the Onionbro Siegmeyer, Quelaag and Ravelord Nito, but it's also the lesser-known NPCs that give me the feels, too.

I really don't understand the PVP community in this game sometimes... Like, I'll get smack-talked for using any Estus, but the insta-lagstab, dark bead, gravelord stagger blade are all legit eh?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 07:06 AM PDT

You can't hold the view that using estus in the game is toxic because it "artificially lengthens the fight" because all of the things i listed above artificially shorten the fight.

Either they all fall under the heading of cheap tactics or none of them do. Pick one

Edit: Just to address some of the comments, I don't advocate for Estus usage in a duel. I don't necessarily condemn it either but my preference is to avoid it in honourable duels.

Edit #2: Holy crap this blew up

Thanks to who it ever was who msg me about the ring of artorias...I kept jumping down into the abyss and dying...That might have took a while to figure out playing the game blind. The co-op on this game is fun as hell. I'll be back down there tonight...I need to farm transient curses.

    A new build idea.

    Posted: 08 May 2020 09:58 AM PDT

So, a strange thought came into my head: "has anyone thought of doing an equality build?". What I mean is that you start out as a deprived, and when you level up, you level everything up at the same time. You could do top to bottom, bottom to top, basically any order you want. Let me explain, say your dex, str, vit, and end are 14, but everything else is 11, you level up everything to 14 before you can continue leveling up. Strange idea, isn't it?

I tried no death run and went hollow.

    Posted: 08 May 2020 07:40 AM PDT

Let me just start by saying that to me, DS1 is definitely the hardest one out of three. l have completed no death run in ds2 and almost done it in ds3 on my second playthrough but I definitely see it is within my reach.

But man, isn't ds1 ruthless. I cannot see myself consistently pulling off all of the things like cheese bed of chaos, run through the tomb of giants, not fuck up in Anor Londo one way or another (rafters, archers, O&S) or fail shortcut to pinwheel. Not mentioning some other stupid place where I'll just lose my cool.

I'll probably try again in some time, but for now... I went hollow.

I feel pretty bad about what I've done

    Posted: 08 May 2020 08:21 AM PDT

For context, I've been working on a magic build and have been going around getting embers and Souls.

In the darkroot garden getting the enchanted ember when I was invaded while clearing out those 3 big cat things. I stood by the bridge with my homing soulmass of course. The invader runs right at me the soulmass breaks his guard. He died immediately to my Soul spear. Right after that a red phantom invades, same set up, same place. He dodges most of my spells but dies anyway cus magic damage bypasses shields a bit. I'm already feelin a little dirty for this. Feel like I cheesed them.

I get my ember and head to depths to kill the gaping dragon for the souls. I get invaded again and wait for them to come to me, I'm not risking getting caught in a bad spot. Invader comes, I cast my homing soulmass. He starts running away trying to bait me into a favourable spot for him. He runs down one of those narrow passageways and well.... Soul Spear away. Instant one shot.

I hate how broken this is but I'm intent on continuing to make this build. I feel like I've sinned as I go for melee builds and it feels a bit cheap for me to do this.

(SPOILER) Finally beat the abysswalker, I feel so proud...

    Posted: 08 May 2020 12:20 AM PDT

I'm so happy I could cry! It took me around two days to finally do it, this is my first run. I went to the dlc ASAP(Level 58) not knowing it was an endgame area, because I really wanted the gold tracer since curved swords are my favorite melee weapon type. I'm not gonna make any more rash decisions like this, but I'm so glad. The fight was amazing and so was the music!

I am a big fan of Dark Souls and I found about the Neolux Neolux channel about 3 months ago and was extremely happy and interested in its development. But today I learned sad news that his creator, Nikolai, has passed away at the age of 73. I think he would be glad to see himself mentioned in the From Software game, so let's do it together, spreading popularity about him around the world!

The Priest class from Demon's Souls is burning at the stake in the Undead Parish

    Posted: 07 May 2020 09:01 AM PDT

    https://imgur.com/gallery/6HwlZEU

So last night I was running through the Parish and noticed that the body burning on the stake in front of the chapel had a unique character model. Upon closer inspection, I recognized it as the Priest from Demon's Souls!

I then used the DarkSoulsModelViewer to grab more screenshots without the fire effect to see it more clearly. Check out the imgur album, there's lots of them!

Do you think this is a little easter egg considering their proximity to the church, or just a random model they grabbed from their last game to save time on a body for this object? Both? Why not just use a regular hollow model like the big pile of burning bodies in the Lower Burg?

This game still holds secrets and little mysteries!

    Mod Interest/Request: Soulmon aka PokeSouls

    Posted: 08 May 2020 08:29 AM PDT

I feel like I have heard of a variation of this so if it exists, please comment it below.

A mod with the following is what I was thinking of:

-You can not attack, you must send out your Soulmon to fight for you (One at a time).

-You can die if you take enough direct damage or all your Soulmon have died.

-Soulmon is any enemy in DS (Bosses are essentially Legendary Soulmon but you get multiple chances to fight them) and you can carry up to 6 at once. Extras are sent and stored at bonfire storage. Key things is you can only get storage after getting the Bottomless Box.

-Starters: To help with balancing the beginning of the game, the starters would have start at a higher level. One should be ranged based, one close melee, and another that is "balanced". Not sure what enemies would be best yet.

-You can catch Soulmon using Soulballs (DS Projectiles: "Firebomb"/"Standard Arrow"=Standard Ball, "Black FB"/"Large Arrow"=Great Ball, "Dragonslayer Arrow"=Ultra Ball, Not sure what the Master Ball would be as you would need to figure out how to limit the use of the item globally to 1)

-Soulmon gain experience from only the enemies they have defeated or earned Souls can also be used to level them up. I think applying a "class" to each enemy that defines a fixed percentage increase on different stats depending on the class would suffice.

-You must be within a certain distance of your Soulmon during battles otherwise they will teleport back to you.

-Spells can be used to either heal your Soulmon in or outside of battle or place status effects on enemies.

-I thought about coming up with an evolutionary tree for enemies but I think that may make things even more complicated and really unnecessary.

Dark Souls 1-3 Complete Item Collection

    Posted: 08 May 2020 10:22 AM PDT

So I've made it my quest for the last year to collect every item in Dark Souls. 1 2 and 3. I believe I have achieved this feat after obtaining the Illusory Rings in DS2 but I cannot find a cumulative list of every item for these games??? Yes I've checked the wiki's and I have everything I could find on them but there were some sneaky items like alternate pieces for a couple armor sets in DS2 that weren't listed under the armor tabs.

TLDR: Is there a comprehensive guide for someone looking to collect EVERY item in all three souls games?? And also, anyone on here have accomplished the same thing and want to post comments on their journeys??? Love to hear it!

    Gravelord sword dance with Talisman

    Posted: 08 May 2020 10:02 AM PDT

Say I have a normal talisman, which has a faith requirement of 10 to wield. If I have less than 10 faith, it means I don't have the faith requirement for this talisman. In this case, can I still cast the Gravelord sword dance?

Just beat Ornstein and Smough, found a great strategy

    Posted: 07 May 2020 11:20 PM PDT

I'm on my first playthrough of DS1, and after many tries, I was just able to beat Ornstein and Smough solo. Found it to be too much hassle to bother with Solaire.

If you're having trouble, try using a fire weapon, preferably Quelaag's fire sword. Keep circling the perimeter of the room while locked on, shield up. They will follow you, and you can safely heal or get a hit in every now and again. Run away if they get too close. I killed Ornstein first but it should work just as well with killing Smough if you want Ornsteins drops.

I've beaten a bunch of hard games (recently Cuphead and Hollow Knight) but never has a game given me such an intense feeling of satisfaction as right now. I was skeptical about the hype at first, but I absolutely see why this game is a masterpiece.

Interesting similarity between the Dark Souls intro cinematic and an original LOTR storyboard

    Posted: 07 May 2020 02:36 PM PDT

    https://imgur.com/gallery/5Ok611b

I was watching the Appendices of the Return Of The King, specifically the storyboards, when I recognized this image that was ingrained in my memory.

The storyboard in question is an abandoned concept in which Aragorn (pictured on the left) would face off against Sauron (wielding the sword) at the battle of the Black Gate.

The above image is of course Lord Gwyn taking the fight to the everlasting dragons as seen in the introductory cinematic of Dark Souls.

I thought the similarity was interesting and I wonder whether one of the artists behind the cinematic took inspiration from this unused concept.

An open letter about Dark Souls and how it taught me to never give up.

    Posted: 08 May 2020 04:45 AM PDT

I've recently gotten into Dark Souls as a series - but I need to preface this question with some backstory.

I've had the game card (Switch Remaster btw) on my desk for a while now, and my first attempts were a bit daunting. Getting into the game was always confusing and strange, but I kept trying. After a while, I decided to give it a rest and play something else.

Its been about 3 months since I've put the game down. With quarantine turning me into more of a shut-in than ever, I decided to pick the game up again. This was originally brought on by some of Vaati's lore videos, specifically the Prepare to Cry series, which made me WANT to experience Dark Souls for myself. It was one specific video (IIRC it was the second part of the Prepare to Cry on Gwyn) where Vaati said something that blew my mind. Up to this point I had been playing for about a week and a half non-stop, and I was starting to understand the mechanics of the game. I just couldn't get over every time I had collected a bit of humanity, or a considerable amount of souls, and then died without reclaiming them. It made me angry and bitter - but the second I heard Vaati say the words, something clicked. I wish I could find the exact quote, but it goes along the lines of "Death is but a stepping stone" to your goal. Or at least that's how I paraphrased it in my head. Regardless, the message came across.

The whole game changed for me that day. The game wasn't me throwing myself through tough bosses and enemies in inconvenient places anymore. It was a battle of will - my determination against the game's. If I gave up, what would be the difference between me and the hollows I was fighting? (As cheesy as it is, I love that analogy - the driving theme of determination in Dark Souls is applicable with nearly everything.) Trudging through aimlessly made the game a chore to play, and death seemed like more of a punishment than it actually is. This lesson, that death is but a stepping stone, makes the game so much more interesting. Instead of staying reserved and on the path, I could afford to die a few times to learn new areas - the second that souls started meaning less to me, the easier the game became. When death became a natural part of the game cycle, I found myself being able to relax and enjoy the game while I explore, play a bit cautious, and learn when I die.

I know this is probably done to death, that this whole revelation is much more of a noob speaking on the series, but I wanted to share some of my feelings about what is probably one of my new favorite games.

I also wanted to ask a question - for veteran Souls fans (or newer players like me), when did you have that moment of clarity? I know I'm assuming a lot in this question, but considering the type of games FROM Software makes, there has got to be a point where we all had to train ourselves think a bit differently about failure in videogames - from missing a hit to accidentally rolling off a cliff, how did you adjust to the Dark Souls method of playing?

Gravelord Nito and this f ing game

    Posted: 08 May 2020 08:00 AM PDT

Fuck this game. I'm going through my NG+ run through and I fucking hate this game. It's so frustrating sometimes but it's all worth it when you finally beat a boss.

But for real fuck this game, it's so annoying watching some of the youtube videos and these guys are like "it's so easy" and then I go to do it and just destroyed in like 2 hits or die from some bull shit and it makes me hate this game.

As much as I hate it I'm gonna keep playing anyways cause it's so satisfying when you finally beat a boss.

I just came here to say fuck gravelord Nito, fuck this game I hate it, and that I LOVE this game and cant wait to finish this run through and play either ds2 or ds3.

The reason why it was not nerfed (from lore perspective)

    Posted: 08 May 2020 07:56 AM PDT

So, I think most of you have already guessed what I'am going to talk about: dark sorceries (and other stuff required for better understanding). To begin with, I absolutely love this spell and the power it echants you with. In every game I strive to become the strongest being, in other words - to become omnipotent, if you wish. As a result, I decided to create a build that could do and use everything: heavy and fast weapons, bulky and light armor, miracles, pyromancies and sorceries. And considering the fact that I was going for The Dark Soul achievement (just like in DS2) it was a logical decision... Pyromancy draagged me through the entire playthrough, miracles were fun and useful for farming, but sorceries... that's something entirely different. Soul spear and TCC were fine by themselves, but Dark Bead simply broke the fragile reality of this dying world. Even on NG+ no boss could oppose me. So, I decided to pay a visit to Sactuary Garden and Knight Artorias, seeking challenge. The first one lasted 5 seconds, the second one - less than half a minute (RTSR wasn't even used). I was shocked: why such OP spell was not balanced? Some time after an idea suddenly struck me: what if it was intentional, but ... from the lore perspective? What if the developers wanted to show us the true strength of The Dark that lies within us? It is logical since the fire fades and shadows devour everything, but this phenomenon also demonstrates human power-thirsty nature that craves domination: if someone achieved the level of superhuman, wouldn't he/she try to get the most out? So, this is what I think of the dark sorceries and their unbending strength. However, I really would like to hear your opinion regarding your issue. What do you think?
