I finally figured out why so many people hate Dark Souls 2

    Posted: 29 May 2020 05:19 AM PDT

It's that stupid woosh sound you make when you jump. Ruined the game for me, never playing it again.

    Fume knight!

    Posted: 28 May 2020 10:20 PM PDT

First time playing the DLC, loved Brume Tower, actually. Damn that fume knight though! What a battle. Summons are worthless because they make his attack pattern hard to predict. And his attacks slow down once he charges up his sword, it's hard to adjust mid right.

But I did it! About level 150, str/int build, about 40 in each, with about 25 end/vigor. Used the throne watcher greatsword + 5, and when that was about to break , had to switch to the black Knight ultra greatsword for the last few hits. Which was stressful because the watcher sword swings so much faster, one reason why I like it.

Even has estus left ! What a great boss.

I think I have identified the single thing I like most about Dark Souls 2

    Posted: 29 May 2020 08:48 AM PDT

and that thing is the ability to manage difficulty with smart play. What do I mean by that?

Well, the game is difficult, right? But there is ample opportunity to reduce or manage that difficulty. You can use ranged attacks from a bow or magic to take down snipers or pull singleton mobs away from a group. You can manipulate aggro tethers to avoid gank squads. You can (and need to) be on the look out for ambushes and preempt them or at least prepare for them. You can take advantage of the terrain by using cover, line of sight, and traps (honestly I wish there were more traps in this game so I could turn them on my enemies). You can change your armor or rings to tailor resistances and equipload to certain areas (I always have spell quartz ring on in Shrine for example).

Even your weapon moveset(s) decide the difficulty of certain encounters. Wide sweep attacks help you clear and stagger hordes of enemies, or hit enemies trying to come at you from the side or even behind (praise be UGS aiming). But narrow or vertical attacks reduce the risk you bounce off a wall or other object. A varied weapon moveset (praise be the humble Longsword), or the ability to easily swap between a set of different movesets for different situations, is an awesome way to boost your performance and feel like a kick-ass adventurer who knows her shit in the process.

This is probably why most of my builds end up as either Quality (for wide weapon variety and good ranged bow damage) or hex (wide spell selection for utility, healing, and damage). I just love versatility and I love that the game rewards your versatility. Its also why I avoid thrusting weapons like the plague (except DSS I love you <3). All they do is poke, poke, poke. Boring, limited use, repetitive.

I have limited play experience in the other Souls games, but from what I've seen of them and from what I've played, there isn't as much of this. Enemy encounters seem a lot more straight forward, and magic is far less robust (RIP hex school).

Oh, and this doesn't just apply to DS2 vs other souls games. I like this sort of thing in every game. Hyper Light Drifter, for example, lets you carry 2 guns in addition to your sword which has a variety of attacks (standard, 2 different dash, and heavy, if you buy all of them). Swapping which weapons I carry into certain areas or challenges is great fun, and the bullet-hell feel combined with dynamic cover and unique environments is exactly what I like!

Let me know if any of this makes sense or if I'm just rambling nonsense

    Blue Sentinels/Knights are still... functioning?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 08:55 AM PDT

I have been invaded by blue bros (I can't stop sinning) but only ONCE in my 200~ hours I have seen a blue bro arrive to help a poor soul I invaded. I was considering joining the blue sentiles to coop against invaders, is it still possible?

I've never really gotten into Ds2, I've played it before but only got to the smelter demon. What are some tips? Are spells any good? I'm starting a new character from scratch and I barely know anything about this game because it's been so long.

Does this game improve after No Mans Warf?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 05:29 AM PDT

I've tried on two different builds to get through this place. It's easily the worst area I've played in Dark Souls so far. It's not only hard but feels cheap- it's loads of enemies who are strong in their own right, dogs, and every room has like 2+ people in.

I've died a tonne and actually hated this area- something I can't say about any game. The only reason I'm continuing is I believe the game has potential and I loved games 1 and 3. Is this area anomalous or is it all like this?

Co-Op Partner needed. Gorgoyles at Lost Bastilled, Soul level 107, Soul Memory 789609 (Tier 22)

    Posted: 29 May 2020 12:47 PM PDT

Attempted twice and failed together with the Masterless Glencour.

Got very close once. Failed miserably the other time.

Need human help to defeat Gorgoyles. Anyone in the area or who will be in the area in near future, please place your sign before the mist. I am waiting right by the door with a halbred. We can then proceed together with my dear friend Glencour and put an end to this Gorgoyle infestation.

Dark Souls 2's story is what a sequel to DS should be

    Posted: 28 May 2020 10:52 PM PDT

This is a rant about how I prefer DS2's story over DS3 (from a perspecive of setting and referencing past games) , so watch out because I spoil some areas and bosses from DS3.

So let me start by saying DS1 is my favorite souls game, but I also liked DS2 a lot, but recently I've been appreciating it more. Recently I've been playing DS3 for the first time and so far I'm liking it but it's making me think of DS2 more highly. I think DS2 works better as a sequel than DS3. People often point out the gameplay aspects of the game (variety of builds, better magic, power stance, pvp, etc), which I entirely agree, but in this post I'll talk about the story/setting. One thing that I really like about the story of DS2 is that it really portrays the pass of time, it makes me feel that a lot of time has passed since DS1, I would say more than 1.000 years, that was so long ago that nobody remembers what happened, I like how nobody knows about Gwyn or any "god" of Lordran. It really conveys the theme of perpetuity and an infinite cycle of the rekindling of the flame. Kingdoms rise and fall. I like how little references it has to DS1, (with some obvious ones like the Silver Ornstein fight). But then comes DS3, which is constantly referencing the first game, like: hey do you remember Ornstein? Here it is! Remember that boss that we copy-pasted 3 times in DS1? Here it is! Remember the black knights? Here they are! Remember Siegmeyer? Well he's dead so we can't bring him back but... Here it is another person from Catarina, and he is very similar to Siegmeyer and has exactly the same armour, even though it has probably passed like +2.000 years but whatever in Catarina they make the exact same armour for more than 2.000 years, I guess. So this references kept happening all the time as I played, and sometimes it really annoyed me, like the time I was playing through Irithyl and was really enjoying the area, and then I start seeing the black knight archers and then I started thinking that that was similar to Anor Londo in DS1 and then I find the Gwyn statue and I'm like: What? Really? And then found the stair-elevator and end up in Anor Londo. Even though I didn't liked it, I think it could have been done a lot better, like for example, make the armour and weapons of the black knights look almost destroyed, to give the impression that they have been Hollow for a long, long time. Also make Gwyn's statue destroyed, as well as Anor Londo in general, it's so weird to see that everything is almost the same. And even though there are a couple references to DS2, I believe that they existed just to confirm that it's canon from Miyazaki to DS1 fanboys that claim that DS2 isn't even canon, for example Gilligan, wtf is Gilligan doing dead in a random place of Lothric?

So to finish this rant I have to say that I like references to the previous games, but I like how DS2 did it, not many references but when you see them it's not so much in your face, it has it's own story and style. I think DS3 relies to much in DS1's story, and in my opinion it doesn't have a unique identity like DS2.

What if it was Aldia who told Vendrick the existence of the Old Ones to repeat Gwyn's cycle and change the fate at the end?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 06:11 AM PDT

What if he wanted to repeat Gwyn's cycle to instead end it with the reign of the Dark Lord, but found out just too late that this reign was no better than continuing Gwyn's Age of Fire?

Sorcery, Pyromancy, Miracles and Hexes STEP BY STEP GUIDE?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 11:48 AM PDT

Is there something like that? Something like "27. Get miracle Y here, 28. Get pyromancy X here" in gameplay order which doesn't require looking at 4 different tabs, counting everything and doing complicated work?

I platinumed DkSIII with brilliant sheet with every collectibles required to platinum and in good order.

What's an "easy" boss you have the most trouble with?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 11:46 AM PDT

I had no trouble with the Bell Gargoyles, Vestaldt, Lost Sinner on my first playthrough of the base game but man, I literally quit playing for days when I was struggling to beat Dukes Dear Freja. It's just the worst thing I can imagine fighting against. I hate spiders in general but I'm not exactly arachnophobic however, the boss is so ridiculously easy but is made harder by the gank gang of spiders that won't stop following me around. Sometimes they spew a web that slows me down while the big one lasers me to death.

I hate that area so much.

Just replayed all 3 souls games on my AW3420DW ultra wide gaming monitor....WOW!

    Posted: 29 May 2020 10:20 AM PDT

If you haven't already, grab an ultra wide monitor for gaming when you can, you won't regret it. I started out on DSR using fightingcowboys guides on YouTube and haven't had that much fun replaying a game in years! His guides are so straightforward and he keeps the watcher entertained. Check him out if you want to do a full run through of all the games if you haven't already. Anyways, for DS2 I threw on a reshade pack, along with a dead zone fix for the sticks and used flawless widescreen to get the best DS2 experience. The game runs at a solid 60 FPS at 3440x1440. It played and looked so clean it was unreal. I actually started the souls series on DS2 and let me say, still my favorite game of the series. The DLC alone for this game was 10/10! If you get the chance to try these games out on an ultra wide, you are going to lose it! Sekiro was also unreal on this monitor too!
