    Dark souls and addiction

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 03:58 PM PDT

I got clean Sept 25 2013. I needed a video game to play in my downtime, but all my games were ones I played while getting wasted. But there was dark souls, the game I forgot about because it was way to hard. Never gotten past asylum demon. So I committed. I was going to beat 2 bosses, then finally decide if i should trade my collection and find a new hobby. Turns out, being wasted makes learning timing hard, and soon, I was .... I was googling wear to go. Because I went to the graveyard, then blightown. I needed help. But the he spoke to me. Trying again and again to overcome, and Everytime you rest it's like nothing's changed? Yeah, been there. And then it grew. Even in my solitude, and feeling of desperation, I had a community to reach out to to get help. A ton of people had been where I was, and were willing to help me out, with advice, or to accompany me if needed. I played it regularly, then ds2 and 3 I bought a PS4 to play Bloodborne. As I got into the lore I read more I to my addiction too. And the realization that my old life was a vicious cycle of repeating but ever hardening challenges. A trap of my own making, and the only way to win was to stop fighting. I got a tattoo of the dark sign to celebrate 5 years clean. Reminder to me that I was still "cursed" and while not hollow, I had to preserve my humanity. I love the souls games. I love my new life. I just needed to get this out there. This place seemed like a good place for it.

Edit: wow, I thought this would go by unnoticed, and was mostly just me kinda venting this thing that's been in my head. Thanks everyone. I appreciate it.

Perhaps the biggest lesson from Dark Souls is : In a world full of fake gods, monsters, hollows who lost their purpose and "trusty" patches, be Solaire and seek your own sun.

To the invader at Anor Londo

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 09:22 PM PDT

I was the guy with the flame sword and the fang boar helm, the one who started out the fight with the giant dad emote because I thought it was funny. When our fight took us to the roof however I was sure you would just kill me while I was distracted by the silver knights, but you didn't. Such honor is a rare thing in these games.

For not killing me I dropped you a fire keeper soul because honestly I can do without one and I wanted to show respect. We bowed and had a duel on that roof that even though I've bested the pvp in dark souls 2 and 3 still showed me the thrill of being so close to death only to bring it back and almost win. You didn't heal and in return neither did I, and the battle was so much fun.

When you killed me by taking advantage of my agression and waiting until I was low on stamina I wasn't mad, or annoyed. I was hopeful that perhaps we would meet again. And if we do I will best you brave knight, and I can't wait to possibly clash swords once again.

I salute you sir knight, don't you dare go hollow before we fight once more.

    At face value...

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 07:52 PM PDT

Dark Souls. When I think about Dark Souls at face value, I often find myself calling out the usual motifs that surround the game. You know... Prepare to Die, Git Gud, and "there goes another controller". The game's difficulty is glorified by its unrelenting enemies, chaotic level design, and those insanely annoying invaders who pride themselves in taunting me as they poise through my basic longsword in Undead Burg against my SL 10. At face value, Dark Souls says, "this is NOT gonna be easy". However, it doesn't stop at combat and exploration. The difficulty seeps into the lore.

As I think about my first playthrough, I consider everything the game spoon fed me. From Oscar giving me this undead purpose to Kingseeker Frampt "elucidating" my fate, sending me to the most BEAUTIFUL goddess I've ever seen, just to kill the most badass creatures, all to succeed the "honorable" Lord of Sunlight by making myself the martyr. At face value, you give light to the world through fire, stop the curse, and all is well... well? Well...

But you all know it was bs. You know what happens if you snipe Gwynvere. The reality of Dark comes in faster then you can say, AMAZING CHEST AHEAD. What's scary is that it took me casting Great Lightning Spear and being a jerk to see that someone was pulling my strings. It was a hard facing fact that I played the game SEVERAL times but never once thought to hit her. The perfect illusion. How can you hit such a lovely creature? Well... isn't that just like Dark Souls? To be such a difficult game in all aspects like hiding the truth behind a beautiful goddess designed to keep you drooling with thoughts to (F)avor (A)nd (P)rotection the moment you see her? Its brilliant. I mean, if you read the flavor text on a certain ring, you find out she left Anor Londo, so that should tell you something is up, but reading through all items is difficult for a guy like me. Dark Souls difficult.... heh heh heh. And where did ignoring these small facts get me? It got me sitting in my recliner thinking... MIYAZAKI made a fool out of me everytime I linked the fire.

The point of this post is to express to you all what Dark Souls made me realize about myself. It made me realize that I blindly follow. Before Dark Souls, light was good and dark was bad, but now... I dont know if that's even true.

I'm 30 years old and I just learned that if I dont pay attention to the smallest details (like a f***ing ring for example), or if I blindly do what I'm told, I could very much be a part of a bigger problem, and still think I'm in the right. Dark Souls has taught me to pay attention to everything, but most importantly, not to stare too long into the radiance of the light. While it may look beautiful, light has the capacity to blind us from the reality around us. This insanely thoughtful game has shown me that sometimes the darkest path may actually be... the right path, and that revelation initially made me feel hollow because its nothing I've ever considered before. Talk about sheltered right? Its... life changing. The truth is, Dark Souls is deeper then I could ever have imagined, and I'm thankful for what I've taken from it. I feel honestly like a bit of my humanity has been restored. Enough to feel connected to life again, and to do it differently, like not taking everything at face value, and to think critically for a change.

TL;DR Dark Souls has helped me grow and it's the best game I've ever played. I wanna say Praise the Sun but... should we?

P.S My wife says yes cuz "Solaire would have wanted it that way".

Dark Souls completely blew me away!

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:15 PM PDT

so i just beat dark souls and just wow, its a masterpiece, one of the best games i have ever played if not the best. lore, worldbuilding, characters and atmosphere in this game is absolutely the best Fromsoftware has done and i can see why this game made such a huge impact in gaming. coming from someone who played sekiro, bloodborne and dark souls 3 first i thought i wouldn't like this game because its slower, but in the end i really enjoyed the slower paced combat of the game and the lack of fast travel in the first half (make the game feel more like a journey than the others).

i have a lot of things to say about this game but i wanna keep it brief. despite 3 areas of the game being not so good (lost izalith, demons ruins, tomb of the giants) the game still gets a 15/10, its just that good and overall the best fromsftware game i have ever played.

In Defense of the Stray Demon.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 09:57 PM PDT

    Disclaimer: This has spoilers. Duh.

I really like the Stray Demon. (Hell, I prefer him over Papa Nito) But unfortunately, It seems that the majority of the Dark Souls fanbase doesn't agree with me. Or maybe all the lurkers do and just don't mention it. In any case, hopefully, I'll change some minds. Let's begin.

The Stray Demon is a really interesting Boss, in a lot of ways. First of all, It's liable to be the first enemy any Dark Souls player sees, and in that first interaction alone, he already stands out to the average player, he instantly captures a sense of power and more than a little terror when you first see him. FromSoft pulls their classic sneaky environmental storytelling here, by showing the bars between you bent from the impact of a (very, very) dead person. This, obviously, gives a sense of the kind of sheer power this thing has.

Now obviously, once you work out that the Stray Demon doesn't even really notice you, you continue on and find a bonfire. You walk through a big door and BAAM! he shows up to take you on... Or does he? After you kill the Boss, an observant player might notice the sound of large footsteps. Heading back to the cells, you'll find that demon still stomping away, completely unfazed by the death of his near-identical twin brother.

Now obviously, this sets the Stray Demon up for further conflict down the line, but as you leave the Asylum, you start to focus on other things, more hollows to kill, more bosses, level-ups, weird giant snake monsters... All the fun stuff! A (new) player will probably be a fair way into the game before they return to the Asylum, if at all, so when they finally show back up, they've conquered countless bosses, and gained a great deal of confidence. This time, they feel ready to take on anything in their way.

Then the floor falls out from beneath them. Literally.

The Stray Demon does look the same as the Asylum Demon, but I don't think it's merely a lazy reskin. The Stray Demon uses its similarities to create a sense of progression and challenge that the Firesage simply doesn't. When you face the Stray Demon, after waiting so long for the inevitable deathmatch, it feels amazing. You feel confident after your triumph over the Asylum Demon, and all the other bosses you've taken on between now and then. At the same time, the Stray Demon has an entirely new moveset to throw at you, while also retaining some elements of the earlier version. And the Stray Demon even has the difficulty to back up his mid-game appearance. I don't think there are many players who beat this guy on their first try.

Compare this to the Firesage, a Boss who many also decry as a simple 'Ctrl+C Ctrl+V'. In this case, I'd say that it's true. The Firesage has no new moves to catch you off guard, and is quite simply the Stray Demon with fire effects and a different arena. With the Firesage, it's obvious that given more time, FromSoft would have made something different, something better no doubt. But the Stray Demon wasn't a rushed job, he was carefully designed in order to present the player with an early obstacle to eventually overcome. In fact, I personally feel that if the Firesage wasn't such a blatant reskin, the Stray Demon wouldn't have had nearly as bad a time in reviews and rankings.

Now, of course, I do think that the Arena could definitely use some work, his moveset is a little janky at times, and the Lore is... well... pretty much nonexistent. I'm not saying the Stray Demon is a perfect boss. Not even close. What I am saying is that he is a decent one. So give the poor guy some love, ok?

This game changed me as a person.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:39 AM PDT

dark souls isn't just a game. it helps you grow as a person. it's eerily clear what your purpose is; overcome challenges and beat the game. once i achieved this purpose, i went hollow and left the game for a while. the i saw a funny video on YouTube (giantdad build by ymfah) and went, "Hey. That's kinda cool. I should try that."

Now i had a new purpose. and i achieved it. and went hollow again. then i decided to go for the platinum and the cycle repeated. And I returned to being hollow, not having touched the game for months.

Now i have a new purpose (and this one should take me a just a little longer). To get a ps4 and relive it all again in DS3 and Bloodborne. and if it weren't for the lessons i learnt from this series, I would have given up within a month. now I stand $50 away (not asking for help just wanted to revel in my progress I guess) from my goal after relentlessly saving for a year.

Never stay without a purpose (It doesn't always have to hard core. It could just be to relax a bit) skeletons. As always, Praise The Sun and don't you dare go hollow.

Anor Londo's silence is giving me the creeps

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:03 AM PDT

First time playing Dark Souls, going through Anor Londo currently.

How big the area is, how small we are compared, the silence is giving me the creeps. Other areas thus far have looked like a habitat for the dead anyway, but this place where it looks like humans live here yet nobody is there.

    so vast, so empty.

Loneliness is a special kind of creep.

Anyone done a Dagger run? (Progression help /tips)

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:13 AM PDT

Hey ya'll. Looking for a spot of help.

So I'm currently doing a Dagger run, starting with thief class. My goal is to capitalize on backstabs and ripostes. I'm running into trouble for enemies too big to backstab or riposte and, due to the short range, I also tend to struggle with zerg rushes / ambushes. Other than that, the run has been fun.

    • What would you recommend I do for such enemies?

    • What would you envision my gear progression to be like as I progress through the game? I'm thinking maybe shadow gear set and Priscilla dagger as end gear

    Thanks!

"dark souls is not difficult" and "dark souls is very easy when you know the mechanics" is the dumbest thing i have ever heard.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:26 AM PDT

I've been a big fan of dark souls since I can remember. I love this game and all the parts

[although many people consider the 2nd part as a flop, I still think it is a very good game].

I persuaded many friends to start playing souls despite the fact that they had previously been discouraged by this game. And although I read a lot about this game, watched various recessions or listened to different opinions about this game, one thing always annoys me: when someone says "dark souls is an easy game, you just have to learn it".

I have the impression that many people forget that this difficulty is just learning such a game, remembering the movements of opponents and bosses, checking all angles in the location. It seems to me that many people try to present the game as easy because of it, which is totally not true for me. It's like someone saying that being a boxer is easy, you only need to be able to avoid well and know how to hit.

Dark souls IS A DIFFICULT GAME, period.
As I said before, in this game the difficulty lies in learning from your mistakes, repeated deaths and knowing the world and opponents. if the game were really easy, people would kill all bosses the second time they play it for the first time. And so, after a long time when someone has passed the game several times, knows bosses by heart and knows how to do all side-quests, the game will be much easier, but this does not make the game generally easy for everyone.

That's it, I just wanted to express my opinion about people who brag about beating dark souls and saying that the game is easy. It would be cool to see your opinion about it too.

I BEAT DARK SOULS FOR THE FIRST TIME

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 11:56 AM PDT

I had lots of fun throughout this play through and my friend may have helped me on a boss here and there, but I beat Gwyn and most of the bosses by myself. Gwyn honestly was a lot easier than expected (and I'm not good at parrying). I did have the black knight halberd, and full Havel gear. But I also did have to beat the first half of this game with just the drake sword and hard leather gear so I'd say it's justified. My favorite boss was probably Ornstein and Smough, or Knight Artorias but that's not controversial in any way. I was not expecting to do new game plus instantly but I'll continue this character as long as I am willing to, and I hope I have as much fun with the other games.

Trying to get into Dark Souls as a Beginner

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:09 PM PDT

For the longest time I was incredibly intimidated by the Souls games. I had a friend who was super into them in High School, he probably beat the first game over a hundred times. But after having recently beaten Jedi: Fallen Order, and overcoming my frustrations. I thought I understood the point of the Souls games and thought I'd give them a try. I'm currently going through Prepare to Die Edition with DSfix, and spent like an hour trying to beat the Taurus Demon. After I looked up it's moveset, which felt like cheating, I was able to beat him in about 2 attempts. I don't know if I'm just terrible at the game, or if I'm not treating it the right way. After I died to the surprise dragon on the bridge after the Taurus Demon, I just stopped playing. For some reason I just don't feel motivated to continue playing, despite understanding that it's one of the major themes of the game. Is there any advice you can give a newcomer like me to help me continue forward?

    What if...

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 11:32 PM PDT

I'm getting into Dark Souls, and my boyfriend is a die hard fan explaining everything and I had an idea. What if Gwyn was married to Velka. And if that were true, he sent her to Seeth the Scaleless when she was having Gwyndolin to have him help her get a son- since the first born was banished. And since many of Seeth's creations go wrong... Gwyndolin came out with snake legs. Just a thought. Let me know what you guys think!

Why is Prepare To Die Edition so expensive?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:58 AM PDT

    WTF?

I really want to get the PTDE ver because the boss rush mod doesn't work on Remastered (correct me if I'm wrong, I can't get that to work it never hooks to my game)

So went ahead and google some cd keys site and all of them sell it for like 170~200 USD

like why is that? Yea I get it it is not obtainable now.....but still come on lol it's not even a physical copy.

Anywhere I can buy PTDE cheap? I really want to use the boss rush mod....

So... Let’s rant about that near-impossible bump that traps you at the bottom of the Great Hollow

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:32 AM PDT

You know the one I mean. As you're arduously trekking back up the tree on foot, you encounter a little ankle-high bump. This bump was not a problem on your way down, but this will wreck your play through if you can't warp back to the top.

Every game has it's questionable glitches people have to work around. But when you consider they released the "remaster" and the problem IS STILL THERE 9 YEARS LATER.

Took me too long to realize something quite ironic about Havel.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 04:44 PM PDT

BIT OF A LORE SPOILER AHEAD, OKAY?

Would love to hear thoughts on this, as I believe it to be intentional game design and worldbuilding by From.

A more sensible and logical person would notice this way earlier, but I only recently came to the realization regarding the lore significance about Havel's location. His arch-nemesis Seath the Scaleless was a sorcerer and preferred to reside in his tower for research, correct? Considering how devoted Havel was in his pursuit to crush Seath I find it quite ironic how Havel was locked away inside a tower, just like the thing that he hated the most.

Sorry if there's already quite a lot of posts about this already, I'd imagine that I'm far from the first to comment on this.
