Executioners chariot is my favourite gimmick bossfight so far.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 05:45 AM PDT

I have finished dark souls 1 and 3 already, and I'm currently doing a playthrough with a friend in dark souls 2 (I'm actually loving it so far). In both games there are quite a few gimmick bossfights, which I classify here as boss fights that deviate from the standard "Hit the thing and dodge the bad" boss fight most commonly found. While the ideas are usually nice, they are either poorly executed or just not very challenging, usually resulting in either a very easy (take yhorm) or very bullshit (bed of chaos) boss. A lot of these bosses are also not very fun to fight, if there's any fight at all.

Executioners chariot might be the only true exception i can think of (I haven't finished ds2 yet, so that might change). I'm going to list off the things i like about it:

    • Presentation: because a lot of gimmick bosses don't bring too much to the table challenge wise, they at least try to make the fight epic in it's own way. This is the reason I still really like the fight with Yhorm, despite it being laughably easy, because the spectacle of it gets me everytime. Chariot definitely gets this right. The music is incredibly tense, and the braying of the horses and the shouting of the charioteer as it charges past while you just dived into a safe spot are briliant. The rush after finding a spot just in time when you thought you overextended a little also adds to the fight.
    • The fight is actually somewhat challenging. Figuring out the gimmick usually results in a really easy fight or a really frustrating one. Chariot manages to be neither, and while not THAT hard, it can still easily kill you if you don't pay attention. It isn't really unfair, unless you just mindlessly charge in and don't deal with the skeletons, but in that case you're just bad you're not playing the fight right.
    • At the end of the course, you still get an actual fight. In the Ancient wyvern fight, for example, as soon as you complete the obstacle course you do a plunging attack killing it instantly. When the chariot crashes through the gate, you still have the horses to deal with who still put up a fight.

These are just my thoughts and they're not perfect, so give me your thoughts!

this has been a trend of mine ive been doing on ultras lately, stacking dmg boost rings, stats, and spells regardless of thier cost on the lowest sm i can be efficient (around sl140 no sm lost) and destroying hp bars. Even sl 800 havel jester spammers and havel minatour poise monsters with infinite hp in arena cant stand against it

Just got the platinum for ds2.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 05:46 AM PDT

My first souls experience was with ds1, in January of 2019. I didn't even get half-way through the game before I found out there was a remastered version and decided to buy it and play that instead. I played through that game and absolutely loved it. After I beat ds1, I decided to buy ds2 sotfs and ds3 with all the dlc. I tried to play ds2 but couldn't get into it. The bad hitboxes and clunky movement turned me off ds2. Then I tried ds3 and loved it so much that I got to ng+6. Sometime before I got to ng+6 on ds3 but after I beat it for the first time, I decided to suck it up and get through ds2. The first time I played through ds2, I didn't enjoy it. I played through it once and didn't go to ng+. I just wanted to beat it and be done with it.

I recently decided to go for the platinum trophy for all Dark Souls games and Bloodborne on ps4 and I must say, I did not give ds2 a fair shot the first time. I also didn't think it would be the first Dark Souls game I would platinum.

This time, I started as a cleric. I wanted to do a strength/faith build, kind of a paladin build. On normal ng, I beat almost every boss, did all the dlc, and got almost every item I could. I also farmed covenant items for the rewards. I kind of speedran ng+ because at that point my only goal was to get to Wellager to get that last miracles and pyromancies that I needed. Got to ng++, bought the last miracles and pyromancies I needed, and got the platinum.

Now that I have properly played through this game, and gave it a fair shot, I can say that Dark Souls 2 is not a bad game. In comparison to the other Dark Souls games, it isn't as good in my opinion, but that doesn't make it a bad game. I had a lot of fun with it. 89 hours and 34 minutes of fun to be exact.

My final stats were 30 vgr, 25 end, 50 vit, 25 atn, 60 str, 6 dex, 25 adp, 4 int,and 55 fth. Level 227. I used a lightning giant warrior club +10, drakekeeper's greatshield, lightning dragon chime +5, looking glass armor set, third dragon ring, royal soldier's ring +2, bracing knuckle ring +2, and sun seal. The spells I used were sunlight blade, soothing sunlight, and sunlight spear. 8,732,798 soul memory.

Playing through the game like this was very fun and I am glad I gave this game a second shot.

    Thank you for reading.

Smelter Demon is a poorly designed boss

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:52 PM PDT

I just recently had the opportunity to fight this guy and after multiple tries, I finally beat him, and it felt like I was actually beating the developers instead, and their incompetence.

I usually don't mind a slightly unfair hitbox, but every time this guy strikes the ground with his sword he will hit you even if you're a bit more than a meter away from the impact. So when dodging, you have to take into account that extra space on his hitbox. Diagonal swings also make no sense to me because it doesn't matter in which direction you roll, sideways, back or forth, it will hit you. You're literally better off using a shield and blocking the hits.

I find it really helpful to hang out just right behind him, his incompetent tracking will have him swinging and stabbing in random directions but where you are, and you'll only get hit by the occasional random diagonal swing. But that's about it, he's only challenging because he's poorly designed, other than that he's pretty predictable.

Unfortunately, the devs thought it was a good idea to place him twice in the game. The second time you meet him, at the Iron Passage, doesn't even feel that rewarding to kill him because the area itself is so challenging and after you beat him, you don't get to discover any new area, an elevator just takes you back to where you were at brume tower, making that entire episode feel like a waste of time.

Managed to smack Pursuer with the UGS parry, as well as get the rare healing chest trap to pop up! Today is a day of firsts.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 07:50 PM PDT

Feels really good to pull it off. Timing's super wack. Have to hit L2 as soon as he looks at you funny before doing his running swing thing. Have to predict it for the three-swimg combo, doesn't give you enough startup time.

How to fight invaders as heavy weapon user?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 11:09 AM PDT

I primarily use heavy weapons such as the Lions Axe, Dragon Tooth etc..

How can I effectively use these weapons to deal with invaders? Strength weapons in particular are very slow and it's making me think about respeccing for dexterity.

I usually face veteran invaders who seem to know what they are doing and mind tricks don't seem to work.

Why is Aldia the final boss?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:01 PM PDT

I completed the game today, after killing Nashandra I was like "it's over" and then Aldia appears! Why does he fight the player? I searched a lot about his lore and I can't find any reason for this.

And do we really kill him? He continues speaking after we defeat the boss.

From what I understood, Aldia is Vendrick's brother, he studied the curse making experiments in undead and other creatures, created the Ancient Dragon (don't know why) and found that the origin of the curse was the darksing , caused by Gwyn's fear of the dark, the first sin.

He says this before the fight:" Many monarchs have come and gone. One drowned in poison, another succumbed to flame.Still another slumbers in a realm of ice. Not one of them stood here, as you do now. You, conqueror of adversities. Give us your answer."

He's clearly talking about sunken/iron/ivory king that although being powerful they weren't the "true monarch". And then calls you "conqueror of advertises" instead of "young hollow", probably saying you became the true monarch.

But he wanted that right? As he says here: "Young Hollow, seek after Vendrick. He who almost became a true monarch. Vendrick is certain to guide your way."

So why does he fights us and why he didn't die?

How to name my wizard character?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 06:21 AM PDT

It will be a pure spell build, using all 4 spell types.
My character will have a backstory, he seeks to perfect his magic and is very arrogant and proud.
I want the players that i'll be invading to know that my character is arrogant just by looking at his name.

    I was thinking of:
    Arrogant Sorcerer/Wizard
    Vain Spellmaster
    Supreme Sorcerer
    Power Overwhelming
    Arcane Brilliance
    etc

Do you like any of them? Think of some of your own. Ill be recording a pvp video with this character soon

That one guy is back doing that one run again. D'ya miss me?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:38 PM PDT

So in case you missed it, a little over a week ago I was posting daily updates about my deathless no bonfire run... then I took a break. And then I am back! Who'da guessed it?

So... Im gonna skip over a good chunk of the runs I did during my "break" as I didnt get too far on most of them (I did one every couple days or so) (ooo actually, on one run I made it all the way to earthen peak but Ifld forgotten to grab a bow so I had to run across that walkway at the start and lure the guy back but I ended up trying to roll into one of his attacks but I just missed the timing and got knocked back onto the ramp just after the first bonfire and it frickin god friggin what! It queued my roll from earlier and I rolled off into oblivion... Fich Mich :[ ) What motivated me to keep posting was a pretty good run that I got today :). It was a reeeally fun one... until the end. The important thing is.... Ive now done 29 attempts.

Attempt 29: So.... all is going well, Im having fun. The start to the run was great, I used almost no healing and got quite a few lifegem drops, great! I soared through Lost Sinner and Mildred Grande. Got through Tseldora without tooooo much trouble (I did miss the chunky Lizard though but I dont NEED that chunk to get my rapier to +10 as I would have 1 chunk leftover. However. Time for criii. I accidentally used a chunk to upgrade the Mace that I use as a backup to +7 so I could only get the RapeStick to +8. Soooo.... what to do? Hmmmmm? I remember! Theres a chunk in a poison pit in the Harvest Valley. So I grab the bonfire at the start of that path then ruuuuuun run run, decimate the BIG Skellys then grab the chunk and yeet myself back (I also forgot to level in my panic but hey-ho) so I make it back, am able to upgrade and breeeeeze through to Iron keep... holy shit, I might actually make progress this time! Or... you know... get comboed by Fencer Sharron... yaaay.... Okay then, fuck me I guess. Oh well, try again tomorrow I guess.

I feel like Ive got a much better idea of my gameplan now, especially for Tseldora and Keep (I did a little Keep practice on an older save) than I did before. And post-keep the only things Im worried about really, are Amana obviously as well as the Throney fight and Looking Glass to a lesser extent as Ive only fought each of them once before (though Imagine Throneys will be significantly easier with a little jabby rapier than 2 Massive Smelter Swords). I think I can pretty consistently reach Iron Keep as a base at this point and from here its just getting more runs there so I can get better at that area and the ones after it.

Hope that was a somewhat enjoyable read, thankyou if you took the time to read all of my garbage👍 Ill be back to posting regular updates from now I believe, if all goes well. Hopefully that was a good enough comeback for y'all. Bye for now Biches and Bichettes

-That one guy, once again, doing that one run

No Death/No Bonfire Run: Practice Day 1

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:31 PM PDT

So, quick backstory. I'm in school rn, so I can only play for a little bit each day. I'm going to start streaming my actual run in about a week, so I decided to practice a bit (a lot) before I did that so that I could restart only once or twice while streaming. I am also following ymfah's guide to it.

Try 1: I made it through Things Betwixt no problem. Then, on that ladder to Melentia's room in the Cardinal Tower, I messed up and wasn't able to get up the ladder fast enough. Managed to survive, and made it to cardinal tower fine. Bought a firebomb, opened the shortcut with it, and ran to Last Giant. Almost died again to the spear guys and then the ones from behind, but again managed to get through. Summoned Luet, because I did not want to risk dying. Ironically, I came as close as I've ever come to dying on this fight, but was fine. Bough the blacksmith key, as well as 10k worth of souls from Melentia so that I could get Covetous Silver +1. Ran to Pursuer, and had to quit out a few times because I messed up the ballista shots a few times. Finally got the shots (First time ever doing it) and flew on Bird Airlines to Lost Bastille. Killed things, got large titanite shards, and tried to open up the door to McDuff. I fucked up, and had to homeward bone to Majula and run all the way back to reset the area and try again. Made it through, looted more shards, and upgraded my rapier to +6 back at Lenigrast. Steeled my courage, and then ran to Heide's. Also a first, I cheesed Dragonrider for the first time (this is only my 3rd playthrough, and i didn't do it 1st time and messed up the timing 2nd time). Happily punched Licia off the map, the Homeward boned to that bonfire to loot the Rotunda key off her. Ran towards the wharf, then thought that the Old Knight with the big boy sword didn't notice me, so while I was busy looting a dead-end hall, he stuck his sword up my ass. Oops. Run 1 fail.

Run 2 was an absolute anticlimax, and was due entirely to my stupidity. I made it through everything, up through Last Giant. I went back to Melentia, was buying the keys, then stopped to let my dog back in. Oops. I come back just in time to see the screen fade and my character pop back up in Majula.

those took about an hour, and after my last failure I'm willing to be done for today. I'll probably practice tomorrow, and hopefully have some good tales to tell of them.

When is the most fitting time to complete the DLCs?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:20 AM PDT

    Hello!

A few moments ago I realized that the paths leading to the Sunken King and Iron King DLCs are widely open, since I have the keys for both of them. However, I'm not quite sure if they're meant to be completed now or later in the game. From what I picked up on the internet, I understand that they're supposed to be explored in the endgame. What I'd like to know is when they're most fitting to complete from the story perspective.

Until now I've only played Demon's Souls and Dark Souls Remastered. Demon's Souls didn't had any DLC to be concerned about. Dark Souls had one DLC and I managed to find when should I play it without spoiling myself. For Dark Souls II I haven't found anything. Most post I read only mention that they're hard and it's best left for endgame, but nothing about when to complete them from the story perspective, if the order even matters as it did with Dark Souls.

If someone could explain when to start doing the DLCs and in what order, I'll be awfully grateful.

Here is my progress so far:

    Thing's Betwixt -> Forest of Fallen Giants -> Heide's Tower of Flame - > No-man's Wharf -> The Lost Bastille -> Sinner's Rise -> Belfry Luna -> Grave of Saints -> The Gutter -> Black Gulch -> Huntsman's Copse -> Undead Purgatory -> Harvest Valley -> Earthen Peak -> Iron Keep/Belfry Sol

I have absolutely no idea what's going to happen next, except that I have to defeat one last Old One and find the King. If it's possible, keep things ambiguous so that I won't get spoiled. At least not too much.

    Thank you for reading this!

Finished my first time through DS2:SOTFS (offline/solo) - wanted to share some thoughts, favorites, and least favorites if anyone is interested

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 08:26 AM PDT

EDIT: Didn't really expect this to get downvoted to zero, kinda confusing but ok.

I'm currently making my way through the Soulsborne games, with DS2 being my fourth after Sekiro, DS1, and Bloodborne.

I've done them all offline/solo with no summons, and for DS2, I played the SOTFS edition. The Moonlight Greatsword and Staff of Wisdom were my weapons of choice, and I finished around level 160-ish.

Here's a picture of Kelsier, the Battlemage for some fashionsouls.

Anyways, I'll just jump in here with some overall observations on my experience:

    • I really don't understand why people hate on the lore/characters/story in this game. I enjoyed the story a lot, and while there is some exposition dumping, the whole thing meshed really well. I felt like my character had more direction and motivation than in DS1 or Bloodborne.

    • Continuing on my first point, there were so many memorable moments in this game. I was so sad the first time I saw Vendrick, even though I already had an idea of what to expect, and I'll never forget walking into the Dragon Aerie for the first time.

    • Holy forking shirt balls, this game is so much more difficult than I thought it would be. I'd seen people put it at the low end of difficulty for the Souls games, and while I agree that the bosses are fairly easy, the levels themselves are absolutely brutal.

    • I was really surprised at how slow the combat is - there's a big delay after swinging that I didn't expect. Also every enemy seems like they have infinite poise almost. It makes things very methodical when fighting.

    • Oh my god, there are enemies everywhere, and sometimes it gets really annoying. I question some of the decisions made in enemy placement (Brightcove Tseldora has respawning spiders in a bonfire room, like what the fuck), and at times it just feels like the devs put that many enemies there just to say, "it's Dark Souls, it's supposed to be hard, so get fucked!" I know some of the other games, like Bloodborne, have groups of enemies, but the player is more equipped to deal with groups than in DS2. This was probably my biggest complaint of the game. I know, it teaches you to move slowly and etc., but some of the aggro ranges on the enemies is insane and you can't just pull one or two all the time.

    • In a similar vein, some of the runs to the bosses are ridiculous, and made even worse by the enemies aggro range and no i-frames when traversing a fog gate. For example, in one of the earliest levels, to get to the Pursuer, you have to fight 6-7 enemies every single time you have to run to him. There's no running to the boss gate, because they'll follow you, and one of the enemies is an archer. It gets tedious after a while, and that's one of the easy ones.

    • I am so glad that I had a staff to act as a ranged weapon. I seriously can't imagine playing this as a melee only character. So many archers and wizards out of range.

    • I really liked Majula as a hub. I know everyone loves Firelink, but I thought Majula was great as well. It's only hurt by not quite being the same type of hub, since you can travel via bonfire early, but it felt like home for me.

    • The durability in this game is insane. I had to carry a backup weapon the entire time, because the durability just went so fast. I've kinda done some google-fu and seen that there may be an issue in the SOTFS edition, so maybe that's it. The area I noticed it most was Brightcove Tseldora, because the spiders just seemed to eat up durability. And I had to do it twice, because I used a bonfire ascetic to get the MLGS.

    • I didn't like the new stat system, but I got used to it pretty quick. You level up so quickly that it doesn't seem to matter.

    • Magic seems way better in this game than DS1. I played sorcerer only, but I would definitely replay with hexes.

    - Favorite Area

    Dragon Aerie, hands down.

That was one of the coolest introductions to an area that I've been through, and the whole thing just seemed so majestic. I felt really bad when I came back later to fight the dragon...I did it right before finishing the game, because I didn't really want to do it. But if you're not fighting all of the bosses, then what even is the point?

I'd also throw a shoutout to Lost Bastille and Forest of Fallen Giants as being really well developed with shortcuts and etc.

    - Least Favorite Area

I feel bad saying this, but it wasn't easy choosing because there were 2-3 areas that I just really didn't care for.

In the end, I settled on Brightcove Tseldora. I spent a fair amount of time there early so that I could get the Moonlight Sword, and it is just awful. So many spiders, mages, peasants, etc., and the run to the boss is tedious. The whole area is just a giant beatdown that's jam-packed with enemies. Couple this with durability issues, and you have the worst area in DS2.

Honorable Mentions: Gutter/Black Gulch, Shulva, Earthen Peak.... I HATE POISON.

    - Favorite NPC

Vendrick was super interesting from just hearing about him in game, to meeting him and seeing his sad, hollow form, to finally getting to speak with him in his memory and finding out that he is actually super wise. I felt terrible for him, but also admiration.

    - Least Favorite NPC

Any of those asshole invaders, but especially Armorer Dennis. I was finally just trucking along in FoFG, feeling confident and comfortable, and this asshole just comes out of nowhere and kills me over and over.

Some of the invaders have really annoying spawn points, too. Like the one in the Doors of Pharros that spawns with a giant and poison rat-dog. Playing offline, I didn't have to worry about invaders until this game, which was kinda cool but also rage-inducing.

    - Top 5 Bosses

    • 5.) Darklurker

I had to look this one up to figure out even how to get to him, but it was worth it. Probably the best "gank" boss in the game, other than Ruin Sentinels, and seeing him split in two was terrifying but fun. Great design for a boss, too.

    • 4.) Lost Sinner

This boss has two flaws - the run to his (her?) room, and the weird hitboxes. But it's so much fun! I didn't realize until after I had already beaten him that you could light up the room, so we just dueled away in the dark. It's one of the first true duel bosses in the game, and I loved it.

    • 3.) Fume Knight

Just a well-designed boss that takes tons of concentration and learning to be able to triumph. His buff is crazy, and the way he mixes up the timing of his attacks keeps you guessing. Felt good to win.

    • 2.) Ancient Dragon

Honestly, the fight itself wasn't that great, but the arena and epic-ness of it all made it worthwhile.

    • 1.) Sir Alonne

When I entered the room for the first time, I just thought "wow." The fighting arena is gorgeous, and Alonne's moveset/aesthetic oozes cool. His armor is beautifully designed, his sword is awesome, and he's fast as hell. I would put this up there as one of the best Soulsborne fights, imo.

    - Bottom 5 Bosses

    • 5.) Belfry Gargoyles

This fight is just stupid. Fighting 3-4 boss-level enemies at the same time is not fun. They have crazy reach and tracking, and the whole thing just feels like difficulty for its own sake. It took me forever to beat this boss and felt no satisfaction when I won, just pure rage.

    • 4.) Mytha, the Baneful Queen

I didn't realize you could turn off the poison. She wasn't that difficult, but when your movement is slowed and you're constantly dying, it sucks.

    • 3.) Demon of Song

I don't know if I broke this boss or something but he literally never moved from his starting position or closed his head, and I just soul arrowed/speared him to death. Boring boss after such a difficult/unique area.

    • 2.) Gank Squad

Holy shit this boss fight took everything about the game that was annoying and put it into one boss. Multiple bland, reused enemies that can cancel rolls, attacks, etc. on a dime. I looked up how to cheese them and I don't feel bad about it.

    • 1.) Royal Rat Authority/Vanguard

I'm lumping these together because why are there two rat bosses? Authority was moronic, with the only saving grace being that it is so close to the bonfire. Even after the stupid toxic dog-rats are dead, his lunge attack is cancer. It can destroy your stamina with one block, and if you're underneath him, his leg can hit you and still catch you.

Vanguard is just a stupid boss that doesn't need to exist. My biggest moment of shame is that I actually died to him because I didn't realize the rat I was about to tank a hit from was the boss.

Also small shoutout to Flexile Sentry...the boss who is a standard enemy. Why?

ANYWAYS - if you made it this far, thanks for reading! I really enjoyed my time in DS2.

I'm trying to get all the achievements, I need to get Sun Bros to Rank 3 but it's been very difficult to get people to summon me, not as many new people play on lower NG and I'm not sure which boss I should be placing my summon sign at.

I just started NG+ and I'm looking for people who I could tag along with and help with their bosses.

Alternatively, I could use some advice as to where a person of my level and soul memory should place their summon sign at.

    Summon Info

    Platform: Xbox One

    Gamertag: Toxxee

    Level: 144

    Soul Memory: 2534737

    Name Engraved Range: 1,200,000 - 12,000,000

Bloodborne, DS3, Seki and now DS2. One issue I have is that you can parry Bosses BUT YOU CANT RIPOSTE them!

So help me if we ever get the dream remake of DS2 using the new Fromsoft engine, so help me make them ripostable.

I need me that satisfaction. Parrying and riposting Pontiff? Mmm. Parrying and Visceraling Papa Guacamole? Mmmmmmmmm. Deathblowing Demon of Hatred? MMMMMMMMM.

Being able to parry and riposte Pursuer?

    The. Fucking. Dream.
