TIL That the channeler in the Depths can cast his frenzy/buff spell on the Gaping Dragon.

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 03:08 PM PDT

I was sunbroing at the Gaping Dragon today. I got summoned for the fight, and I noticed a minute or so in that the boss had the bluish aura that appears when the Channeler casts his spell on an enemy. The barrage of soul arrows that started raining down on us confirmed that the host neglected to kill the channeler before going into the boss fight. We may or may not have lost the battle, lol.

    COD vs Dark Souls

I just got back into playing Call of Duty after about a five year hiatus. And boy let me tell you those game lobbies are a war zone of insults and pure profanity. It instantly made me realize and appreciate the community we have here. I've never met a more polite and helpful group of people <3

First time finishing Dark Souls - here are some of my thoughts, favorites, and least favorites

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 02:59 PM PDT

Hey all you cool cats and kittens,

I finally finished my first playthrough of Dark Souls today. I played a little in college but never made it past Blighttown because I didn't actually own the game.

The only other FROM game I've played is Sekiro, which I loved as well. I think overall, I liked Dark Souls more due to the setting and lore. However, I felt like I mastered Sekiro's combat more. I would definitely say Sekiro is harder since you can't really level up - you either perfectly learn the boss, or you die.

I finished the game using the Elite Knight Set with a +15 Claymore, and +5 Silver Knight Shield. Havel's and FaP rings for the fast roll. I also played offline and never summoned, so the whole thing was 100% solo. I found this to be a great experience, since it magnified the feelings of isolation in the game.

Anyways, the only thing I love more than a Claymore R2 is making lists, so here's a few of my observations that no one cares about:

    - Biggest Surprises

    • Wow. I really suck at parrying. I thought this would be the easy part, coming from Sekiro, but the timing is completely different, and I was never forced to learn it until Gwyn. I just avoided it the whole game and rolled instead.

    • Holy crap, the level design in this game is amazing. I don't know if I just missed it the first time playing, or if I forgot, but the levels might be the best thing in the entire game.

    • The difficulty wasn't what I thought it would be. I hate to keep comparing it to Sekiro, but it's my only From Software benchmark. The first few hours of Dark Souls are way harder than Sekiro, but around mid-game, it starts to get easier. In Sekiro, no matter how far along I was, I never felt invincible or safe, especially with bosses. In Dark Souls, after Anor Londo, I felt pretty good and safe most of the time...until the DLC. I feel like the reputation of DS1 being incredibly difficult comes from the first half of the game and people just giving up. In Sekiro, there were bosses that I fought 15-20 times, but I think the highest count I ever got in DS1 was around 5 or 6 for Manus and O&S (and Bed of Chaos if that even counts).

    • I didn't come into Dark Souls expecting to really care about the story. I remembered it being very esoteric and not very present. Again, I must just not have been paying attention the first time around because I absolutely lost myself in the world this time. It's wonderfully subtle and one of the best feats of game-storytelling ever.

    • Sekiro protects you, for the most part, when platforming/running around edges and branches, so imagine my surprise when my first death was due to falling off of a cliff. It was a sign of things to come, as this happened over and over and over and over and over again. Seriously, the majority of deaths came from the environment because I'm too stupid to learn my lesson.

    - Favorite Area

I would definitely have to say the Undead Parish/Burg. Honestly, coming from Sekiro, I was kind of annoyed that you couldn't warp between bonfires, but the level design and shortcuts were absolutely genius and completely changed my mind. I spent so much time next to Andre, running into Darkroot, running back through the church, running to Sen's, that the Parish bonfire became my homebase rather than Firelink. It even has one of the most memorable boss fights in the Gargoyles, and the Balder Knights look super cool when you first run across them.

I'd throw out an honorable mention to Anor Londo, which is absolutely incredible when you first get there. The only things that knocks this area down, no pun intended, are those stupid archers and the cathedral platforming sequence.

    - Least Favorite Area

There's a few that just murder me (Tomb of the Giants, Blighttown, Crystal Caves), but the one that sticks out as being...bad is Lost Izalith/Demon Ruins.

It's just boring and too open, so the copy/paste enemies are really glaring. Copy/paste Taurus Demons, copy/paste Capra Demons, copy/paste Dino Demons - even one of the bosses is the third copy/paste of a boss. The egg people are straight-up disgusting, too.

Also, the lava kills the eyes. I'm not even going to talk about the boss...yet.

    - Favorite NPC

I know everyone loves Solaire, but my favorite is Hawkeye Gough. He's friendly, badass, and shoots a dragon down so that you can kill it. What a cool guy.

    - Least Favorite NPC

I mean could it be anything other than a toss-up between Lautrec and Patches?

To offer a devil's advocate opinion, I'll throw out there....Priscilla. I mean, yeah she's cool and sympathetic due to her race and being passive, but then she throws out the line that the Painted World inhabitants are PeAcEfUl aNd KiNd.

Really? The crazy pyromancers with blob-heads that want to murder me instantly, the bird guys who are overly aggresive, the crazy prince with a fashion sense to put Lady Gaga to shame, the horrifically deformed phalanx monster with ridiculously good XP, and the SKELETON WHEELS - they're all peaceful and kind? Oh, I don't think so.

Either she's an idiot, ignorant, completely naive, or something more sinister.

    - Top 3 Bosses

    • 3.) Bell Gargoyles

These guys were a great introduction to the bosses of Dark Souls. I know the Taurus Demon is really the first boss, but I feel the Gargoyles are the first difficult boss you come up against. They look awesome, the arena design is cool, and just when you think you've won, another one comes down to kick your ass. I think they're underrated as well.

    • 2.) Manus

Probably the hardest fight in the game for me, and one of the hardest to even get to. Those damn Oolacile Sorcerers are intense. He is super aggressive, hits like a truck, and has a giant HP pool, which means the fight lasts much longer. I loved that. I really had to learn his attacks and pick my spots for attacking and healing. It was super challenging and fair.

    • 1.) Artorias

Everything about this fight was incredible - the lore, his look, the arena, and his moveset. I felt sad while fighting him, but also intimidated. Much like Manus, I really had to pick my spots and know when to rush him. He took me about 2 or 3 tries until I figured out to not let him power up, and then it was manageable. Might be a surprise to not have O&S here, since I know they are beloved, but I just did not love that fight. The lore behind it, the location, and the characters are interesting, but the fight itself just looked weird. There's a ton of clipping and Ornstein changing directions mid-dash looks crazy and glitchy. I understand why people love them though.

    - Bottom 3 Bosses

    • 3.) Stray Demon/Firesage

Copy/pasted bosses that are difficult only because of a ridiculous AoE attack that hits even when you're behind them. It can be easy to get stunlocked by one attack, which is really annoying. They're bland, boring, and the Crest shield nerfs them completely. Thank you, next.

    • 2.) Seath the Scaleless

In complete honesty, I'm lumping Seath in with his area which is far more annoying than he is. The lore and idea behind this fight is so cool, but by the time I waded through the hordes of crystal assholes to get to him, I didn't even care.

I got completely lost in the Duke's Archives with the million Channelers and Crystal Hollows, only to finally find the way to Crystal Caves and die from the environment like 5 times. When I finally reached him, I beat him the first try...but died in the process, so I had to trek all the way back down to his area and retrieve my souls, almost dying to the clams in the process. He's not that hard, but his area makes this fight a pain.

    • 1.) Bed of Chaos

I probably don't even need to go into why this fight sucks since it's been said over and over. Platforming boss fights in a non-platforming game are not fun. I might have died to this one the most out of any boss due to just being swept into the cracks trying to dodge. Unfulfilling, artificially difficult, and just all around not fun.

Thanks for reading if you made it this far. All in all, I would definitely put Dark Souls as one of my favorite games, and I'm about to jump back in again with a new build - Archer. We'll see how it goes.

I bet this has been posted before but I finally figured out what it means to “go hollow”

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 05:23 PM PDT

I finally made it down to Vamos the other day while I was trying to upgrade my balder side sword into a Fire BSS. I had built my entire game around getting a fire and then chaos BSS as my weapon of choice. Catacomb skeletons I hadn't noticed chased me down to Vamos and murderer us both before I had a chance to upgrade. After death, I deleted the character (to start over) and realized that I just went hollow by never linking the flame and having my character die for the final time

Anyone got any fun challenge run ideas?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 11:52 PM PDT

I feel like I've done them all but I know I haven't, off the top of my head I've done

    -SL1 with/without pyro

    -casting only

    -shieldless

    -bow only

    -no armor

-no rings (except abyss ring since it's mandatory)

    -caestus only

    -fat roll run

I'm sure there's others but does anyone have any suggestions? I'm bored af during this quarantine and need some dark souls.

Edit: I should add I'm not interested in insane challenge runs (no death/no hit ect)

I just got to blight town and these little bug creatures seem to spawn in infinitely and I can never quite hit them. I'm using a +5 halberd and am trying to get my stats up so I can use the black knight sword. If there's anything I'm missing please let me know.

Is DLC available when Siegmeier is dead?

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 12:49 AM PDT

Siegmeier died a long time ago plunging to his death in Lost Izalith(?). I'm trying to access DLC now but after killing one Golem (hydra) I can't find second one (duke's archive). I've read that I should talk with Siegmeier now, but well, I can't. Is DLC blocked for this playthrough?

Doing a pacifist run but, cannot use the Centipede Demon cheese.

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 08:47 PM PDT

For some reason beyond all logic, the centipede is literally incapable of landing his grab animation on my character even when I just stand still and let it hit me. This is extremely vexxing because as a direct result, I cannot get to talk to Solaire which, means I cannot finish his quest line and thus, cannot finish the game as a pacifist that has not landed a kill on any boss in the game since I would not be able to summon Solaire for Gwyn. I cannot find anything about this through google or videos of people doing this trick. Perhaps there's another way to Solaire?

I just don't understand why he cannot grab me. This would be a blessing in any other run but, it's a curse in this one.

I'm surprised that not everyone knows this. You can skip Blightown without the master keys. I wouldn't skip Blightown because they are great. But If you go to Darkroot Basin on the lowest point where the silver knight is you can use the lift.

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 09:26 AM PDT

At first I thought you couldn't use it because in most soulsborne you need to activate the lift where the lift station is. But you can
