    Newbie questions!

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 03:54 AM PDT

    Hello there!

On my first walk through of ds1, kinda loving it but my sessions are rarely longer than 1 hour, the game's intense)

Anyways, I was stuck at the dead city for some time trying to kill the dark knight and I eventually did and seems like I was lucky enough to get his sword, which made things way more easier.

Currently finished depths and heading to blighttown. Farmed some moss in dark wood, upgraded dark leather set to have better poison resistance and stuff (before that I was always naked, but this place was not welcoming).

    So here are the questions:

    1) I'm lvl 35, spending all my points on str27 and dex26, my friend suggested to get those to 40, Fore some reason I feel like this might not be the best option, should I be leveling something else as well?

    2) Still using dark knight sword + spider shield, got the shield to +5 and sword to +3. As far as I understand I shouldn't have much trouble beating the game with these if I upgrade them further?

    3) Is equipping the dark leather set gonna help me in blighttown? I've upgraded it to +3 or 4, is that worth it? (got the rusty ring as well)

    4) How do you upgrade estus flasks early? I fucked up and just consumed the first firekeeper soul I got in undead parish, had no idea what it was used for =\

    5) Humanity - I don't have much and only spend it to upgrade the bonfires to +10 flasks. What should I use it for? I'm not into online aspect of the game.

    6) May be some other tips )

Wow, just finished my first play through. What an experience.

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 11:30 AM PDT

My journey started 3 years ago. I bought the prepare to die edition on steam, I played it on and off for a year and did genuinely enjoy the game. I got to orenstien and smough but never attempted them. But then I stopped playing until the remaster came out on ps4 played it a bit more avidly got to the exact same part and didn't touch it till quarantine started. Then I fell in love with the game. I've never played anything like it. It captured me in a way no game has before. My personal highlight was beating Artorias on my third attempt, never had a rush like it. I also loved sens fortress.

I use to shy away from challenge in games but this experience has changed my views on games. As cringe as it may sound it's taught me a lesson for life: failure is just a step of learning and that's something that I don't think I'll ever forget.

I want to thank everyone in the wonderful community for being so amazing and supportive. The game and my experience with it would not be the same without all of you.

This is by far my favourite game of all time. I rarely finish games so after playing something like this I'm not quite sure how I feel. I feel like I've achieved something, but then I'm sad it's over. I'm still not sure what to do next (either Scholar of the first sin, bloodborne or Nioh).

On another note, I hope you are all staying safe and well in these worrying times and I wish the best and safety for you and those around you.

    Praise the sun :)

    First Time Player

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 03:38 AM PDT

I've never touched a souls game before and dark souls just happened to be on my quarantine games list. I have no idea what this game is about or what your meant to do, all I know is the games reputation for being extremely hard. Please help me in any way you can. Tips and tricks, advice and help would be very much appreciated.

    My DS lore attempt

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 03:22 AM PDT

Hello everyone! So, I've been playing DS for around year and a half and I think that I'm qualified enough to start making those lore theories. I have a LOT of ideas some of which don't really fit in what you can find on youtube or on wiki and I'd like to share them with you. I'm ready for constructive critique, though I didn't play DS2 and DS3 and because of that some of my ideas could be wrong or less probable than they seem for me. I'm going to state few ideas as facts, even though they're not, just because I cannot find better explanation and it's difficult to add "I think" before each idea :).

First of all, in opening cinematic we see how 4 lord souls were obtained. And, of course, the most controversial thing about it is the fact that we see Gwyn with "his faithful knights" even though there couldn't be any sort of civilization before advent of fire. Armor knights are wearing couldn't be created without blacksmith hard work or magic (which also can be used only by ones with powerful souls and there wasn't such souls before advent of fire). What I think have happened is that after appearance of fire in cave, we see in cinematic, passed some time and first humans rose from the earth. Time passed and two main groups appeared: Gwyn's knighthood and Chaos Order. Nito (first of the Dead or more like first Undead) was likely on his own as well as furtive pigmy. After that Gwyn, Witch of Izalith, Nito and furtive pigmy acquired their souls from the First Flame and became much more powerful than before.

Curse of the Undead appeared much later but it is very important to differrentiate between Undead and Human, 'cause latter can become former but not vice versa. The only thing that changes after "reversing" hollowing at the bonfire is appearance and Darksign doesn't disappear. Curse of the Undead appeared most likely because of fading of First Flame and I have a whole different story about it. Even being Hollow is different from what one can think about it. Hollowness is not related to appearance as it can be easily changed but tied to the state of mind. Provided one has goal, he/she wouldn't ever go Hollow, as our character starts in state resembling Hollows around, yet he/she still ventures forward without falling into madness.

Humanity as an item, as something that can be measured and seen was created specially for Undead. The only powerful enough soul we know that could create such a thing is Dark Soul of furtive pigmy. That makes me wonder how Abyss is related to it and who is the Manus we see in DLC, 'cause the place he resides is full of living humanities...

That's not all but I hope it's already enough to talk about :).

Just beat Gwyn for the first time. Some thoughts too!

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 01:40 PM PDT

After starting/restarting this game for 5 years, I can finally now say I am part of the club that has beaten Dark Souls! I beat Gwyn about an hour ago, and the feeling still hasn't washed away, so I figured I'd post something while the sensation is still fresh. (On mobile, so forgive any wonky formatting)

    HARDEST BOSSES/ENCOUNTERS

    • Capra Demon - Such bullshit. Such a long/hard walk to him, and the enemies leading up have a dreadful critical. The real enemy for this boss is the camera.

    • Sif - Quick attacks, with huge hotboxes I fell. That 360 sword swing gives me nightmares.

    • O & S - Obviously. I can't fathom myself beating this boss without a Solaire summon. Absolutely bonkers, man.

    ~Areas~

    • Undead Burg - I know, I know. I couldn't make it to the Taurus Demon consistently on my very first playthrough. My unfamiliarity with both the playstyle and gameplay of Dark Souls made it not fun at the time! Couldn't imagine myself enjoying it if I couldn't even make it past the first boss. Too many firebombs and ignorance of parrying made me set it down for a few years.

    • Anor Londo

    • My second attempted playthrough years later ground to a halt in Anor Londo. I was feeling pretty proud of myself thus far, having beaten the dreaded Capra Demon, then, on my first try, the Iron Golem. Sen's Fortress was sheer misery, but the infamous Anor Londo archers made me set the game down for a couple of weeks out of sheer anger, then I finally made it in after doing a two handed Baldur shield suicide run.

I finally got Qurlaag's Furysword and got to another wall at O & S. My dumbass moved the controller one day and hit the Anor Londo Fire Keeper. I was forced to kill her, and ended up having to use the other bonfire, making my runs to O & S way longer, so I just kinda gave up.

8 month later COVID-19 happens, I get laid off, and the Xbox Spring Sale has the trilogy including the Dark Souls III DLC for $47.45. Fuck it. I've upgraded from my 360, so let's do this.

Framerate increase was great, and I hit my Capra and O & S walls, but the rest of the game was somewhat smooth sailing from this point onward. The bosses seemed relatively less difficult than the ones before, and from this point onward is where I really hit my stride.

It was kind of a blur since I've been spending way WAY too much time playing due to current events. Not too much detail here. Duke's Archives gave me some trouble, but it was purely level design.

I did some DLC before I got to Gwyn, with me receiving my only online summon for Artorias and giving up on Manus. Sorry. I made a too many r/Summonsign posts for my comfort, and unfortunately none of them fell through. I kind of feel better about that in retrospect, though. A little more pride in my work, I guess. But fuck Artorias, and Manus has problems that even I, the Chosen Undead, cannot solve.

After some heavy Titanite farming from the Lost Izalith Titanite Demon and the Kiln of the First Flame soldiers, I went forward. +10 Artorias Shield, Gold Trimmed Blue Robes(?), +5 Dark Tracer, and stupid ass Sunlight Maggot (Fire DEF), I went for it.

And it was one of the easiest bosses. Parrying was not difficult from his waaaaayyy telegraphed sword swings, and my tracer made quick work of him. It's kind of bittersweet, in an underwhelming kind of way.

My victories against relatively weaker bosses felt way more gratifying than the victory I received today, but I will cherish every moment of it.

    Question about summoning items

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 08:05 PM PDT

When I use a summon item and my avatar appears to other players capable of summoning me, am I displayed to the player in the gear I was wearing when I placed the sign, or do I appear as whatever my configuration is in the present moment?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 06:20 PM PDT

To the named "SJW19" or something like that (on PC, Remastered), you came into my new characters adventure after just killing Taurus Demon. You stood still, then waved me over. I can over hesitantly, as I should. But you stepped back and at your feet were 5 humanity. So gracious, so kind.

Then you blasted my ass with sorcery. I laughed pretty hard, so I say worth.

Are there any Soulsborne boss, where their hair is significant?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 01:36 AM PDT

I'm not just thinking a situation where the look of their hair helps making them look more iconic, like Ornstein (the way I see it, the ponytail is his hair). But maybe a boss, where their hair is utilized in some way.

I have played a small amount of the games, so I only know a fraction of the bosses.

It's my first time playing Dark Souls and I'm so proud of myself.

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 02:29 PM PDT

I'm slow with games, I play for a few days then stop for a few weeks.

I've been playing Dark Souls since August 2019.

I was looking through dms with a friend, and noticed that I said "I'm stuck in Undead Burg :(", back then I was so ready to give up on the game.

But, obviously, I kept going. I'm not much of a gamer, I've never played such a difficult game before, so something so small like this has made me so proud of myself.

I realised my pride when I was in Anor Londo, I felt like giving up there.

I'm 15, and the fact that I've gotten so far through the game already makes me really happy.

I'm no longer afraid to go straight in and fight a boss, I can explore without using a walkthrough now, sometimes I still do but only if I'm lost.

I'm just proud of myself for getting so far already, I'm sure I've missed out on some stuff, but I haven't really finished yet, so I hope I can find some cool stuff in areas soon.

Do people actually believe dark souls copied THE CONTROLS of Zelda games

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 04:15 AM PDT

My friends think that dark souls stole the Zelda controls because you can like lock on in both games and there are heavy attacks. And is it just because I haven't played a zelda game I don't see that dark souls apparently copied Zelda. My friends think they are very similar but I don't see it, am I dumb?

Pretty satisfied with my sorcerer build.

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 12:09 AM PDT

I'm kinda halfway between fashion souls and super crazy easy sorcerer. I like the way Hollow Warrior Armor(+10)/Knight Leggings(+9) looks and it's light enough to only need Havel's Ring and 26 END. My other ring is Dusk Crown Ring and I've got 7 attunement slots for a total of 12 Soul Spear, 15 Homing Soul Mass, 60 Great Soul Arrow, and 24 Great Heavy Soul Arrow. On top of that, I've also got Enchanted Bastard Sword +5 [edited], which at 36 INT gives me 539 damage. And the best part is that I'm level 69.

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 02:27 PM PDT

I've been through the 3 main dark souls game as some of you have. It really still holds up especially during this quarantine time. Bought the remastered version to run through it again with my brother. I'm having a blast. Only time I got frustrated so far was in the pits of thief and dog section of bastard town undead burg (pittsburg as I call it) If you'd like to go through it again with us here's the link appreciate all feedback. if this doesn't get removed anyways <3

Some random thoughts about Ash Lake

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 02:13 PM PDT

Ash Lake is such a transcendental experience. When you get there, it's like visiting a place a human shouldn't be in. So it's by far my favorite area in the game. Now, what exactly is it? I'm trying to understand it myself, so here's some random thoughts I had.

    - It supports the world. The trees are the pillars, serving as the foundation of the world itself. The tops of the trees can be seen from Tomb of Giants, and it looks like the floor of the area where you fight a bunch of basiliks in The Great Hollow. As the foundation of the world, there's nothing below the lake (probably) but Gwyn's age of fire burned so brightly it created a batch of ash among the trees.

    - It has the remains of dragons. The dragons all died, but one, the Everlasting Dragon. The hydra seems to be born from a dragon, since it drops a dragon scale, but the Ancient Dragon doesn't seem to be mature enough yet. You need to offer scales to it, maybe because it has none. Some dragon scales can be found around the area, suggesting you're stepping on the ashes of dead dragons as well.

    - There's a giant skull. This reminds me of Norse mythology, where a giant was born when primordial fire met the abyss. Later, the three brothers Odin, Vili and Ver kill Ymir and create the world from his body, similar to how the lords created the world after killing the dragons.

    - The trees might be dead and petrified. You don't see any leaves from the actress at all, so they might have been dead before the Age of Fire. However, from the ask, you can see a few trees growing, green and healthy. Maybe they took nourishment from the ash, and one day they'll grow large and become the home for new dragons, completing the cycle eventually.

    - The Dragon Aerie in DSII might be opposite. It's the highest point in the game, contrasting with Ash Lake, the lowest point. In both areas, you find an altar with a dragon. In Ash Lake, the dragon is hidden and forgotten, while in the Dragon Shrine it's worshiped as a deity.

    - It's not necessarily what the Age of Ancients looked like. It is what's left of it, of course, but it's just like a world in built on top of the other. It's time we're not traveling. Ash Lake lacks the colorless fog and grey crags, and has a huge lake around it. It could have been flooded, but I doubt it. Maybe it was driven down by the weight of the world above it.
