Philosophical concepts through the lens of Dark souls 2 and 3 Posted: 19 Apr 2020 01:48 AM PDT Introduction: Hey everyone, I'm a long-time fan of the dark souls series. Recently I've become interested in philosphy, having gotten through what is probably the bare minumum I did notice quite a few different themes throughout dark souls 2 and 3 that share a lot with some of the philosophical concepts I've read about. Since I didn't want to go hollow during this pandemic I decided to write something. This will be a moderately long post where I go through character dialogue and item descriptions (Vaati-style) while giving my perspective on the connections to the philosophical concepts. ___ Fatalism The world of dark souls, after the age of ancients, is stuck in a cycle between the age of fire and the age of dark. This cycle, as described by several characters in both dark souls 2 and 3 is doomed to repeat itself:
This is very reminiscent of fatalism, which is the philosophical concept that assumes that everything that will ever happen has been predetermined. Which would mean that future events are inevitable and that any free will is basically an illusion. In the case of the bearer of the curse/ashen one, no matter what choice they make, to either link the fire or to let the fire fade even further, their choice has no effect on the overal fate of the world. If they decide to link the fire, they will continue it, if they decide to leave it, a new hollow will eventually get strong enough to defeat them and link the fire, continuing the cycle:
Existential nihilism As the fate of the world seems to be predetermined, so does that seem to have an effect on the way some characters see the value of the life as a hollow. This idea is very similar to existential nihilism, meaning that, because everything has been predetermined, that life is ultimately meaningless. This can be seen in the following quotes:
Absurdism This moves quite nicely onto absurdism, which is the idea that the tendency to find meaning in life is ultimately incompatible with the world. There are three different ways to deal with this suicide, finding spiritual meaning or acceptance. The first is quite clearly demonstrated by the firekeepers:
The second is a little bit more cryptic but is suggested by the following as miracles provide blessings that will aid one in one's journeys:
The last one is a little bit more tricky and comes up way later in the ringed city:
Solipsism and Depersonalization disorder Hollowing plays a large role in the worlds of the dark souls game. On individual scale, hollowing deteriorates and causes the loss of the sense of self. As Lucatiel of Mirrah puts it:
Solipsism is the epistemological standpoint that meaning can only be derived from one's self. As is very clear with Lucatiel as she talks about how she tries to preserve what ultimately is her last hope while she is slowly going hollow. The loss of self and the disconnect from reality is extremely similar to both depersonalisation disorder and derealisation disorder. Moral nihilism Another side effect of moral existentialism is that it leads to moral nihilism, the idea that the morality of actions is ultimately meaningless.
This gets us to multiple different moral theories: Pragmatism Pragmatism is the moral framework that bases actions around what is most useful. This can be seen in both how the throne of want works but also in Vendrick's actions.
Vendrick didn't enter the throne of want as he wanted to find a cure for the curse of the undead, which would have been a way to achieve immortality in a way in which he would ultimately still be able to preserve himself. Consequentialism Consequentialism is the moral framework which bases the morality of actions based on the consequences they have.
Within this framework there are a few different ways one could look at. Ethical altruism There are several characters who, despite the circumstance of the world, have created their own meaning and are able to act out of kindness because of that. Ethical altruism specifically looks at the maximum benefit the other people can have, in some cases this is at the detriment of the individual performing the action.
Ethical egoism Ethical egoism specifically looks at the maximum benefit the individual can have, in some cases this is at the detriment of others.
___ Final word There are quite a few other subjects I could cover here but this post is getting quite lengthy, I could talk about using a means to an end in case of Patches, I could also go further into Vendrick's story, specially when it comes to the ethical considerations regarding the conflict between Velstadt and Raime. I might write a follow up at some point. Regardless, these are my views, might not be entirely correct or coherent but I hope this post might spark some interest for other people to look into this. If you've got questions or comments regarding this post, feel free to leave them here. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 10:10 AM PDT Ok , this does require the use of Stance Swap - where you can change from the one-handed moveset to the two-handed mid combo and vice versa . I wouldn't consider this game breaking or an exploit - I would confidently say that the triple hit combos are much more abusable (Winged spear 2HR2 > 2HR1>2HR1) Anyways - back to the subject - you know how using these weapons will usually mean you just hope they run into your swings as punishing is pretty hard with this moveset. But I'm sure you're aware of how much these weapons chunk on 2HR2's right ? Especially the second one . Now I've accidentally came across this strat while messing around with the Stance Swap (will refer to it as SS from now on) tech - if you start 1HR2 SS , you'll start the overhead slam that practically every UGS has - but it's recovery is much shorter than the 2HR2 swing . After the SS you hit R2 again and you send out the knockdown short sweep that does pretty massive damage and usually people run into it and unless its like a buffed chaos blade R2 , its safe to assume you'll come out on top with that trade and you'll be free to position for a wakeup on the knockdown.. Ill be real - this is really fun and brings new life into the vertical UGS's for me - I suggest giving it a try just to see the confusion on your enemies face . Thanks for listening to my ted talk. Good job skeleton. Miyazaki bad. [link] [comments] |
Crowd Control 101: Beating the Rush Posted: 19 Apr 2020 09:42 AM PDT No matter how careful, how patient or clever you are, eventually you're going to have to fight multiple enemies at once. It's often said that Souls combat isn't designed for fighting more than one enemy, and that's true, but not necessarily for the reasons you'd think. Games where you routinely fight crowds usually use a technique called Unit Slotting where only one or two enemies are actively attacking you at once and the rest just hang out in the background and look menacing. It lets the player take on impossible odds and still feel like a badass. (Except now that you've seen behind the curtain, it'll just make you feel like the game is going easy on you and make all your victories feel hollow. Sorry about that.) When you're playing a game that doesn't run on Martial Arts Movie Logic, you have to find your own way to turn the odds in your favor. The strategically simplest but mechanically most difficult tactic I'll be covering. It's first because it's the one you fall back on when you have nothing else. The rest I'll be covering need prior planning or specific builds to work, but you only need a weapon and some space for this. Conceptually, fighting a mob is the same as fighting a single enemy, if that enemy were an amorphous blob that had multiple appendages that could each attack you separately. So basically Phalanx from Demon's Souls. The rules of spacing, pacing and stamina management stay the same, you just have more targets to track and attack. To this end, learning to play without lock-on targeting is an incredibly useful skill. Not only are you able to change focus instantly and keep a better view of the battlefield, but you actually run and turn faster unlocked. Weapon choice both is and isn't important. You can fight a mob with any weapon, but three factors can make it much easier.
Given these factors, you can rank weapons on how they can deal with crowds. I won't give an entire tier list, but at the top you have Ultra Greatswords (especially ones with the excellent Zweihänder moveset), Halberds (provided you're experienced with the sweet spot) and spears with the Partizan sweep. At the bottom you have things like fist weapons or the Rapier which excel at duels but struggle against multiple targets. The nickname for an artillery strategy dating back to WWII in which you shoot once, then run the fuck away to avoid retaliation. The same idea can be applied to using ranged attacks against mobs. Basically the same as Hit and Run, but from a longer distance. This one mostly applies to sorcerers and hexers, but if you have a bow you can choose to do it as well. Hunter's Blackbow highly recommended. Choke Points Once you know to look for them, you start seeing narrow doorways or walkways in many areas of DS2. These allow you to funnel groups of enemies into an area where they can't surround you and their numerical advantage means much less. There are, broadly, two ways to take advantage of these:
The vast majority of NPCs in the game are simply incapable of using ladders. The ones that can are mostly weak and easily dispatched. If you aggro a crowd and are near a ladder, you may be able to either escape completely or funnel them into a slow moving, single-file queue for easy removal. Spells can also hit enemies climbing up or clustered at the foot of the ladder. Just be careful. You're vulnerable when mounting a ladder and before you climb out of range of their attacks. If you're knocked off, you're in deep trouble. All normal enemies have a leash distance; a point at which they'll stop pursuing the player and return to their spots/patrols. If you're getting overwhelmed, it's perfectly viable to beat a retreat to de-aggro the mob and try again. You can tell when this happens because they'll start blocking and backing away slowly. Be warned that some leashes are much longer than others and that if you're invaded, some paths may be blocked with impassable black fog doors. Environmental hazards such as the flame vents in Iron Keep or AoE spells such as Firestorm are capable of taking out large swathes of enemies at once, provided you can get them clustered together in the right spot. Lingering Flame is, of course, excellent for this, but its long casting speed means that you have to cast it ahead of time. Alluring Skulls and Yearn distract certain enemies for a few seconds, causing them to ignore you. It's not always obvious which enemies are affected, so be sure to check the wiki pages if you're not sure. Affected enemies will prioritize attacking the shiny instead of the player and after the effect ends, will need to re-aggro on you. Whether you use the distraction for some free backstabs or to get away free is up to you. Final Thoughts Hopefully this series has taught you something new or entertained you a little. At the very least, I hope you'll be a little less frustrated with fighting crowds. It's not always going to be easy, but you should be able to make things easier for yourself if you're patient and clever. And always remember: don't give up, skeleton! A question about the Skeleton Lords Posted: 19 Apr 2020 09:44 AM PDT First of all, it's my first playthrough and I know practically nothing about the game. So, when I went through the fog I saw three large skeletons which I killed in less than 2 min( they were very easy and I killed two because they were together) then I expected some kind of Mega Boss and wandered a little through the arena. When I turned my back I saw like 50 skellies following me so I spammed 3 heavenly thunder and with that I killed most of them but there were still some left which I slayed with my sword( during this last part I had to back off to heal a lot because they were still a lot). Then, how does this boss work? Was there a way to prevent the skellies to summon? [link] [comments] |

Aldia, the First Sin, and the Cycle Posted: 19 Apr 2020 12:09 AM PDT I've been replaying the whole FromSoft Souls-esque lineup, and just got through SotFS. Aldia, despite only having four appearances, really struck me as a very insightful antagonist. Most of the entities you meet throughout the series, be they Hollow, human, giant, God, or malicious serpent, all have a very biased outlook on your fate. Most want you to relink the First Flame and continue on the doomed Age of Fire. The Emerald Herald, Kingseeker Frampt, the Gods, etc. all believe you must become strong to sacrifice yourself and alleviate the curse. A few believe instead that it's time for the Age of Fire to end, and that the Age of Dark will inevitably triumph. Kaathe, Grandahl, etc. All else, save for Aldia, covet the Flame, and seek only power. Nashandra, the Iron King, and Yuria (through the Ashen One.) Aldia, however, does not seek to link the First Flame, nor does he seek to end it, or usurp its dwindling power. He muses that he had tried once, but failed. Now, he merely watches as you journey across Drangleic in your quest. The stronger you become, the more he asks you questions, tries to determine your motives, what drives you to seek the throne. He does not intervene until the very end, where he tests your power for himself. After you triumph, he merely muses to himself about your choice. Should you choose to defy fate and leave the Throne of Want, he will begin to pose interesting questions in monologue. What lay outside of light and dark? What happens when neither are there, when the disparity of life and death no longer holds true? Originally, he sought the answer to these questions in his research. Before Light and Dark, there were dragons. The only beings to defy the cycle of the world were those present at its conception, before the first Hollows found the Great Souls within the Flame. Who better to learn of a world apart from Disparity than the Everlasting Dragons? From them, he learned of the Dark, the true Dark, and began research into the First Sin, that which foretold the end of Fire and beginning of Dark. What began the cycle? Where did the Gods go wrong? What was the First Sin? The answer lay in that which brands the cursed; the Darksign. The First Sin was the first sign of Dark, the first fear of it, and the first act against the natural state of the world. The Gods branded the descendants of the Furtive Pygmy with the Darksign to prevent that which they feared most, and in doing so, sealed their own fate. That was their sin, and thus their undoing. Aldia knew this, and as such, it only makes sense for the Bearer of the Curse to abandon the choice they had. The curse placed upon the Undead, and by extension the world, is to relive the cycle over and over again. The Flame will fade, and one being empowered by Disparity will ignite it once again. No matter how many times it takes, and no matter how little time it burns, the Flame will be linked again. Allowing Dark to take over will not break the curse, as a new Undead will take up the task that was left behind. For every being that embraces Dark, one will throw itself upon the flame. The curse defines the cycle, and the cycle defines the curse. As such, it will never end. The real curse is eternity. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Apr 2020 12:54 PM PDT What on earth was Fromsoft thinking here? The path to get to the blue smelter demon is 5 times harder than the actual fight! Why does it need to be a nonstop gank? Why can't enemies just fight fair? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Apr 2020 07:14 AM PDT So basically, I'm in black gulch. I went down to the area with the Giants, and there was 3 of them instead of 2. I already killed the npc invader before I went down there. I killed all the Giants, and I got the forgotten key on the third giant instead of the second. Did killing the npc invader cause another one to spawn? [link] [comments] |

Kill Bosses Under 10 Hits on NG Only Run Posted: 19 Apr 2020 10:58 AM PDT I've been doing a shitload of research into this game as of late with regards to damage, weaknesses and builds, obviously it's widely known that the rapier is extremely OP and I discovered this for myself on PvE when I've been able to one-shot nearly every mob (except knights in Heide's) this is from some speedrunning research. I've also been experimenting with different STR and DEX builds with multiple characters to find the best damages. With that said with being able to get +10 at the beginning of the game with some skipping it gave me an idea for a run, but I need to know if it's plausible:
So, the character I have in preparation for this run is the Rapier Dex build, I have +7 so far and I've fought the last giant, pursuer, sentry & ruin sentinels, from this point on I've decided to start the run and see if it's possible. Considering you can kill Dragonrider for free and get +10 very quickly it gave me the run idea. Now my question is, if I upgrade to +10 with the Rapier and use gold/dark resins with high Dex do you think this run is even possible? I'm not sure how OP the Rapier is to max potential also I know a few bosses that are tank asf like Vendrick and Fume Knight so they will probably have to be experimented on further to make this possible. Edit: also I forgot to mention there are bosses with multiple enemies like Skellie Lords and Rats, probably a rule to make it so that one or two shotting them will count. Or just completely rule-out multiple enemy bosses. If this isn't possible with this weapon and build what else can I do to make it so? I have never ever used magic or arcane in any From game so all you magic-heads out there, is this possible with a magic build if I leave out the DLCs? TL;DR If I upgrade to +10 with the Rapier and use gold/dark resins with high Dex do you think I can do this run in NG only? If not what build can? Pls read bullets for run details. PLEASE NOTE: I am a huge noob to this game, but not the other DS games so excuse me if this run sounds completely ridiculous, this is just me asking if it's possible, not that it can 100% happen. Posted: 19 Apr 2020 02:33 PM PDT Long story short, I think I got soft banned since i can no longer find anyone in the blood brotherhood arena nor play pvp in honor bridge, is there a way to lift the soft ban? Posted: 19 Apr 2020 09:29 AM PDT I am doing a sorcerer run and after beating 3 of the 4 ancients (the last is freja) I went back to the Harvest Valley to explore it better. I've met 4 double-scythe enemies and I couldn't escape. That was unjustifiable because you can't create a "challenge" with 4 strong enemies in a room that you can't escape from. That's unfair, not challenging. I died about 5 times to finally take all drops in that area and I lost about 20k with those bastards. I love this game because of many things but this isn't one of those. I don't like a lot of enemies to create difficulty, I preferred to have 2 of them and some other easier enemie instead of four of that. This game is like a roller coaster, it has really high quality points succeeded by low quality ones. But still love it. [link] [comments] |
