/r/DarkSouls - Modding Monday. Posted: 12 Apr 2020 11:11 PM PDT Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread! Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play! For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games. Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat: Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned: Dark Souls: Remastered Dark Souls II Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin Dark Souls III Our recommendations for safe modding *This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account. Basic Steps: Make a separate Steam account Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library. Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory. Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation. Set Steam to "off line" mode. Install the mods and perform any necessary setup. Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods! Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online! Be wary of invading hacker around Undead Burg's basement. Posted: 12 Apr 2020 01:37 PM PDT There is a modder/hacker/whatever who is invading anybody who dares go to the area past Capra Demon. They will kill you within seconds, break all your items and curse you to boot. Couldn't catch his name, but you'd best be careful. They have already gotten many victims, myself included. https://imgur.com/a/7Vgyazh Picture showing the site of it. :/ I don't really care if he gets off on seeing someone cry about it, I just wanted to give folks a fair warning. Edit: this was on Remastered PC version [link] [comments] |
Alternative opinion on the best ending. Posted: 12 Apr 2020 06:27 PM PDT Hi all, Wall of text inbound so for the majority who can't be bothered to read this a TL:DR is at the very end. When I first played this game I played through the game I did as most people do and followed the path that the major NPC's guide you down, namely Frampt and Gwynevere. I linked the fire after defeating Gwyn and after finishing the game wanted to find out more about what I just did so began reading the lore. Turns out most people believe that linking the fire is a bad thing and that dark stalker Kaathe is the one we should follow. I disagree. The arguments for ending the age of light are all based upon 2 key factors.
I'll attack factor one first. The gods are not just sacrificing us to the first flame, and indeed by the time of dark souls one the "God's" are no longer an entity, only Gwyndolin remains in Anor Londo. Gwyn initially sacrificed himself to the first flame, and I cannot reason why anyone would wish to burn themselves without ever truly dying for a millennium unless they had very good reason. Gwyn feared the dark and given that he is the king of the Gods and therefore very powerful, maybe he has good reason too? When the chosen undead in DS1 kindles the flame, it is using either fragments of Gwyn's lord soul or the lord souls of Nito and Izalith. Hardly sacrificing Man. Whilst the clerics are burning humanities at bonfires, we do not know what effect this has other than stifling the power of the dark, which also may not be a bad thing as I will get on to later. I've digressed a bit here but you get my point. The gods aren't pushing humans down to maintain their power, at least if they are they are doing a bad job of it as currently the gods are mostly either scattered or dead. 2. The age of the dark is an age of man. This is my least favourite assumption people make. So often people are given an alternative explanation as to what is the norm/ as to what they have initially been lead to believe. In this case, Frampt is the obvious source of information that is forced upon you, whilst Kaathe is very hard to find, especially if you aren't actively seeking him. As a consequence of this, I believe that people instinctively jump to the conclusion that the things he says are inherently true by the nature of him being against what we are told to believe. To counter this view, I will examine what we know about Kaathe and why he should not be trusted. Firstly, he can be proven to have caused both the Abyss outbreak in Oolacile and in New Londo. All of our sources lead to it and he even personally admits to being partly responsible for the abyss outbreak in the latter of the two. Anyone who has seen the remnants of these cities will know that an abyss outbreak is no joke and a creature that caused it immediately suspect. Followers of Kaathe will of course argue that Kaathe did not want the abyss to break out, but simply tried to encourage these humans to actualise their true potential. This is easier to defend in the case of New Londo, but even then we are forced to trust his word. In Oolacile however, it is a different story. It is implied by Chester that the people of Oolacile "brought the abyss upon themselves, fooled by that toothy serpent." The implications therefore being that Kaathe encouraged the men of Oolacile to provoke the grave of Manus and consequently seemed to actively seek an outbreak of the Abyss. If you need further justification that Kaathe is not a good guy, we need only look at the fact that his covenant is a group of humans that invade other humans worlds and drain them of their humanities. For a group meant to promote humanity and defy the gods, they do far more damage against their fellow man. Finally on that matter, the sable church of Londor, an organisation set up by people following his teachings, are quite clearly not good. Evidence for this lies in the fact that their atonement miracle is literally an execution, indicating that they do not believe in forgiveness, meanwhile the gods frequently permit atonement for sins. And finally but in my view most importantly, there are subtle and not so subtle undertones throughout dark souls that hint that the true nature of Man is something thoroughly unpleasant. This goes from direct quotes such as Patches in the Ringed City saying "Every age it seems is tainted by the greed of men...- perhaps it's just the way we are." Or more implied, the creatures that have some of the highest humanity drop rates in dark souls one are Rats of all kinds. The link between rats and humanity is almost certainly intentional. Whilst every enemy in the game has a very rare chance to drop "soft humanity" (humanity that appears in the humanity counter), rats have a high chance of dropping "hard humanity" (the actual item.) I don't believe this is coincidence however I admit that this is likely only as clear to me because I am looking for evidence to support this theory. What is my point then? An age of dark, often called the age of humanity, may not be something we should strive for. Even if the horrors of the abyss are somehow avoided, which we have no reason to believe anyway, a world of humanity is a world of greed, evil and madness, as well as sin "after all, it is only human to sin." Meanwhile, the age of light has clearly not damaged humanity too much. Humanity has built countless kingdoms in the world of fire, and by the end of dark souls 3 it is considered a world of Man not of the gods. for example the old stone humped hag at the dreg heap describes said dreg heap as the amalgamation of all of human enterprise. (Note that the dreg heap is the collection of the entire world warped in space.) That takes me to my next point, 3. The age of fire is exhausted. This statement is evidently true by the time of dark souls 3, and even appears the case a bit in dark souls one (with the abyss outbreaks in new londo and Oolacile as well as the mass hollowing.) Even though DS1 is just 1000 years after the age of fire was meant to end. However, people sometimes assume that just because at the times of the games the world is dying, the world is always dying. This is clearly not the case as evidenced by the lore. When the first flame is kindled and burning strongly, souls flourish anew and man and gods alike enter a golden age. It is in this period that great kingdoms like Lothric, Drangleic, Astora, Vinheim and many many more are formed. Every time the flame starts to fade, the undead curse/firelink curse kicks in and people start to go hollow. These hollow outbreaks often cause the collapse of kingdoms, As shown by Astora and various other cases. When the first flame is inevitably rekindled, souls flourish anew and this age of kingdom building happens again. Proof of this is that between dark souls one and 2, many new kingdoms are formed, namely Heide and Drangleic, and between 2 and 3, Lothric, Irithyll and Carthus are formed. Whilst admittedly the ages of fire are getting shorter between linkages as the number of availible souls shrinks, this prolonged age of fire and the occasional time when the world is reset essentially by the fading flame is far more desirable than a world enshrouded by darkness where beings driven by greed sin and evil are at their prime, in my opinion. When Gwyn reset the logic of the world by setting up the fire link curse, and then sacrificed himself by burning himself for a millennium without ever truly dying, we can only assume he did so for a very very good reason. An abhorrent age of dark not just for him but for all creatures appears to be the case as we are told by his successors (Gwyndolin and Frampt.) Consequently, I can only conclude that the age of fire is by no means ideal, but we should not immediately believe that the age of dark is any better, especially considering that our only source that justifies that is a mass murderer and his cult of humanity thieves as well as a church that follows him who's idea of marriage is plunging a sword in the chest of your spouse. TLDR: Age of dark can't be good because it is an age of man, man is by its nature evil as shown by the game time and time again. Gwyn reshaped the nature of the world and sacrificed himself, he must have done so for a very good reason. The people that claim the age of dark is good are all unanimously evil. Kaathe, Darkwraiths, Sable Church. Age of light is not as bad as people think, in-between linkings of the fire both humanity and the gods live normally. Kingdoms are established and all is well for most of dark souls history. Just think about it, does an age of cold darkness seem pleasant to you? I did not think so. Thanks for reading. Posted: 12 Apr 2020 09:38 PM PDT So, I've been playing DSR on Xbox 1 for a few months. In that time I've dabbled in multiplayer, but not once have I ever had another player reach out to talk. Then today I finally, FINALLY, had someone ask me to join his party to talk as we took on Kalameet. Afterwards, we did a few duels and had a great time(he was darkwraith and I'm path of the dragon). Really chill guy, and I hope I see him around. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 12 Apr 2020 04:25 PM PDT Looks like I've been cursed by another player. I'm in Anor Londo. There was a Gravelord Servant sign, so I decided to fight him for fun, cause I've just defeated the titanite demon and just wanted to chill for a while. That guy killed me couple of times. After the last time, I got my HP down to half and there was a statue after I died. I've read this thread, where someone was dealing with the same issue. https://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls/comments/8mz9hc/cursed_dark_souls_remastered/ So it's a hack? Can someone help me, please? Cause I don't know how to get back to the Undead Merchant form here. Actually, I was thinking of buying a purging stone from her on my way here, but then I thought that there'll be no enemies, who can curse me after Basilisks... Oh, and also all my weapons were almost destroyed, my Halberd went down to 0. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Apr 2020 08:29 PM PDT This is my first playthrough ever of Dark Souls and I just beat the world and I have to say this has probably been one of my favorite parts of this game. Sure, it's not that hard, but the level is pretty with the snow, the concept of the broken castle is neat, and Priscilla's lore is cool. That's all, carry on! [link] [comments] |
Does anyone else feel bad for the Black Knights in the Kiln of the First Flame? Posted: 12 Apr 2020 05:51 AM PDT They just seem so sad and lonely. What was an elite enemy in the early game is now just a regular mook, wandering aimlessly in an ashen wasteland, mindlessly defending the grave of their dead god. They're very sad. I want to give them a hug. [link] [comments] |
A Way to Turn Up the Background Sound Effects Without Changing Combat FX? Posted: 12 Apr 2020 11:42 PM PDT I'm playing on PC so mods are totally valid solutions (ideal if they're compatible with Daughters of Ash). But basically, I've always found the soundscapes in the background of Dark Souls to be a bit too quiet, and I'd love to finally remedy that. The options menu only has Sound Effects, Voice, and Music, but upping sound effects enough to get the background sounds where I'd like puts the combat sound effects to pretty blaring extremes. So has anyone managed to isolate the background sounds? Either via some obscure setting in the Data directory, or via a mod? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Apr 2020 08:45 AM PDT I've been playing a randomizer mod run of DS1 recently, where almost every item can be anywhere, including merchant inventories and enemy drops. The only exceptions were the lord souls, lord vessel, and the key you need to get out of the cell in the dukes archives. I bought Manus' soul for 100 at the undead merchant, found the giant armor in undead burg, and my character started with a symbol of avarice. I ended up using the gravelords sword for half the game and black knight great axe for the 2nd half. It was a great challenge because I have sadly memorized most item locations and can tailor my runs to find only items I need. It got boring. Anyway, I finally beat it, and Gwyn dropped the heater shield. Thought y'all might find that as funny as I do. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 Apr 2020 01:54 AM PDT so i got the game (remastered) a few days ago as my first souls game on pc and ive been playing it a lot, and i had just finished the part with the archers (you know which one), when i got invaded. i huddled around the unlit bonfire while the guy stood there, but after a while he left my world and let me light the fire and save. thanks guy (if you see this) for not tearing me in half right as i finished that part. it made my night, homie [link] [comments] |
I accidentally refused Kathe and now I cant get any red eye orbs!! Posted: 13 Apr 2020 05:03 AM PDT I recently bought Dark Souls Remastered and am very much enjoying it so far, but.. I beat the four kings and was talking to kathe when I accidentally said no to his request! Now it's impossible to get any cracked red eye orbs! Help! If anyone can drop me a couple red eye orbs I would be more than happy. Thanks for reading. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Apr 2020 05:43 PM PDT After three years of false starts and Hollowing, my lowly thief from Carim bested the Lord of Cinder with her trusty Halberd and Solaire by her side. What an adventure. From surviving the pestilence of Blighttown to gasping at the gorgeous, haunting Anor Londo to discovering the otherworldly Ash Lake, this has been the most fulfilling gaming experience of my life. My eventual triumph over Ornstein and Smough left me shaking, sweating and elated in a way I've never felt with other games (especially after that fat bastard kept laughing at me). I had to lay back on my bed for a minute or two before I could do anything else. There is nothing like the rush of seeing "Victory Achieved" blazing across the screen, whether you're taking on the Moonlight Butterfly or the dastardly, unreasonably challenging Pinwheel. I cared deeply for the few friends I found and did my best to keep them going. I fed the Fair Lady with my own, precious humanity to ease her suffering. I helped Siegmeyer go on his final adventure. I guided Solaire to gross incandescence, while he saved me a thousand times over. Sometimes, my actions were selfish; I never did tell Laurentius the origins of my spectacular pyromancy. I played offline and relied on this community to guide me when I was stuck -- or curious about what might happen if I did, or didn't do something -- and you never let me down. Thank you for your help. To those of you making your way through this cruel, beautiful world for the first time, or the seventh: Don't you dare go Hollow. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 13 Apr 2020 02:10 AM PDT I just bought Dark souls remastered and I was wondering which starting gift is best. I've heard master key is the only really useful one but I don't know if it would be best as it's my first playthrough of the game. [link] [comments] |
Just had an amazing PvP experience! Thank you! Posted: 12 Apr 2020 05:07 PM PDT I have begun a playthrough of Dark Souls 1-3 as one single character, Zuko the Pyromancer. I was focusing on Dex weapons for the early game until I could rely on Pyromancies more, and just after MoonLight Butterfly I decided to answer the call of a Gravelord. I meet the host and their golden phantom. They allow me to have a 1v1 with the phantom, which I somehow win! The host then drops me a Gold Tracer! Perfect fun and special weapon for my character to use on this playthrough! I didn't get the host's name, but if you're out there, thanks for being a great sport. [link] [comments] |

Summoned by hacker, broke my save... help please Posted: 12 Apr 2020 04:47 PM PDT Hi, I had my white summon stone placed in Anor Londo. I was summoned by this guy (I have his Steam profile, but I know the rules are no witch-hunting). As soon as I spawned in, there was all this fire coming from his character to mine (I thought white summons were friendly?) which did all of the following to me in less than 3 seconds:
It's obvious this guy was hacking, but how do I repair the damage he did to my save file? 50% HP is going to be way too frustrating for the rest of the game. This was my first playthrough of any Souls game and I was proud of myself for making this far, but this is gonna be the end for me if this can't be fixed. [link] [comments] |
Glitchy Random Invades to mostly Demon ruins BoC area and first Catacombs bonfire area. Posted: 12 Apr 2020 09:28 PM PDT So I've been playing the *mastered version of Dks1 for a while and have noticed a strange phenomena I can't recall ever happening in PTDE. I will be LEGIT red eye orb invading from the vast majority of soul levels and I will somehow randomly end up invading the areas I mentioned in the title. From level 24 to 130 this has happened at least 20 times since I bought the game. It happens even on characters that have never even been to said invaded area in the playthrough yet D: This may sound crazy. Has anybody had this happen to them? [link] [comments] |
Dark Souls IS easy mode (for some players) Posted: 13 Apr 2020 12:10 AM PDT I know the whole "there should be an easy mode for Dark Souls" debate is a bit stale at this point, but I've got a point to bring up. I might be alone in this; but I suck at other games, particularly shooters. Shit I can shoot a real gun no problem, but in a video game no dice. In a market saturated with shooters, I just figured I might not be a video games kind of guy. But then Dark Souls happened. Everyone I know would always get a higher score in COD zombies, playing online in COD or Halo I'd barely scratch out in the middle between the average gamer and 8 year olds who had never played a game in their lives, but I could run a pretty sweet combo in Tony Hawk. As far as I know, that was the only game I could play on hard mode. With Dark Souls though, I found my niche. I've played all of the soulsborne games apart from Demon's Souls and Sekiro, and I've never struggled nearly as hard as I did with other games. I was intimidated at first with the notorious difficulty, but once I figured out how the game works I was hooked. Not everyone can be good at everything; there's surely Dark Souls veterans out there that are better at Halo or whatever than I am, but there are plenty of people like me who are only good at one or the other. Dark Souls is the way it is because there are different kinds of gamers that function in different ways, let us have some kind of bragging rights. Plenty of people have debated things like playing a certain build or whatever to make it easier, which is totally valid, but like if you're having so much trouble maybe it's just not your thing? Just a thought. [link] [comments] |
Sitting through pain, with a smile Posted: 12 Apr 2020 06:07 PM PDT I have had 4 friends play all 3 dark souls games and caught every single moment they have experienced as I made them stream the games. I didn't backseat, I didn't tell them where to go or how to level or how to play. One of them constantly played with like a maximum of 10 vitality/vigor the whole series. My only influence was having them beat all bosses in which I would finally say where any missed bosses were right before final boss and also to fight bosses without summons. I know some people disagree with this choice but they ultimately all were glad I did that as I explained how fighting a boss with a summon is exponentially easier especially with just being able to aggro a boss. We went through good and bad times (6 hour fights with smelter demon) but the absolute best moments as an evil person and worst moments as a friend was watching them all find their first mimic in Sens house of cock and ball torture. They all looked at a chest, filled with joy and anticipation of what might be in store for them. I watched, dead silent, and screen recorded the stream as they were chewed to bits. I regret nothing. Edit: Kinda told them how to play with the stuff I stated later in the post [link] [comments] |
Friend played game for first time. Posted: 12 Apr 2020 09:04 AM PDT Yesterday we got bored so my roomie decided he'd like to give Dark Souls a run and see what he thought. My other room mate and I looked and each other and sent him down the path with a Dex. build and very little explanations. He rang the first bell, which took about 3 hrs, he then spent the next 3 hours trying to defeat the Capra Demon and make it down the the swamp for the second bell but got pissed off and went to bed. He's actually doing better than we expected but he's still got that new player mentality and it's fun to watch. I'll let you guys know if he picks up the controller again [link] [comments] |
