I found a quote by JRR Tolkien that I think perfectly encapsulates why the lore in Souls games is so intriguing

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 01:54 AM PDT

Apologies in advance if this has been pointed out before. On the off chance that it hasn't, here's an interesting quote I found by LOTR creator Tolkien. When asked to give an account of why Tolkien thought his Lord of the Rings was so popular, he answered:

"Part of the attraction of the L.R. is, I think, due to the glimpses of a large history in the background: an attraction like that of viewing far off an unvisited island, or seeing the towers of a distant city gleaming in a sunlit mist. To go there is to destroy the magic, unless new unattainable vistas are again revealed. Also many of the older legends are purely 'mythological', and nearly all are grim and tragic: a long account of the disasters that destroyed the beauty of the Ancient World."

The similarities in how Souls games are presented with a "show, don't tell" design are obvious. People have been talking about the special nature of Souls lore for more than a decade, but I don't think I've ever seen a description that can quite match that of the great Tolkien.

Beat kalameet for the first time

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 02:02 AM PDT

Hey guys this is my first post so hope it goes well but here goes. Last night i beat Kalameet and I was so scared because I heard horror stories about him. But as the fight went on I realized this is easy. I wanted to cut off his tail for the weapon so I had to stop myself from killing him before I cut the tail off. And that was my first attempt! It took me 4 attempts to finally cut the tail then I died and then the 5th attempt I got serious and I killed him. Tl;dr: Killed Kalameet really easily don't want to brag I'm just proud.

    Main Menu Theme 600% Slower

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 09:22 AM PDT

I absolutely love the music that plays in this game's main menu, probably more than in any other game I've played. I thought it would be a really good candidate to slow down excessively, so in case anyone is interested I thought I'd post here.

    I unlocked all the achievements

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 01:41 AM PDT

Hey boys and girls, I don't have any friends that play Dark Souls so I came here to share my achievement. It's not the most impressive thing but DS1 is by far my favorite game of all time and it feels good to have finally grinded out all the achievements.

I had a lot of fun (and some frustration) finding new places and strats to farm, I normally don't upgrade my weapons past regular +10 so it's nice to finally have solid knowledge on how to get every upgrade path done.

    Here's my celebration upon completion :D https://clips.twitch.tv/AmorphousGlutenFreeHornetBIRB

    I did it!!!

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 02:57 AM PDT

After 2 months playing at the weekends I beat the game!! It's a bittersweet feeling because I'm just sad the journey ends...also I reconnected with an old friend while he knew I was aging his favourite game. So it has totally worth all the rage I've had while playing the game. Hardest bosses? Gargoyles and Orsntein and Smough. I learnt to parry with Gwyn.

    Next step? Ds2 I guess.

Just Completed a No Healing Run

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 10:03 AM PDT

Before I get into the nitty-gritty of this run, I should probably clarify some of the rules I set for myself when I first got the idea for this. Just as the title states, I can't heal. That means no estus flask, humanity (more on that later), and the couple of items that can restore health. The only time I could heal was at a bonfire.

Overall, the run was easier than I expected. I just had to be way more precise and perfect than ever, which wasn't too bad. The bosses that I did struggle with was the Centipede Demon and Gravelord Nito. For Gravelord Nito, the fall into the arena was the worst part. It knocked off a lot of my health, which limited the number of mistakes I could make to very few. On top of that, the run from the bonfire to the arena isn't necessarily the nicest thing in the world. After a few tries, I did beat this guy.

For some reason, I had a lot of difficulty with the Centipede Demon. This may be because I rely more on tanking the hits rather than actually dodging his attacks. Either way, after several tries I decided to skip this boss. That's where the humanity came in. The big rule of this game is that I can't heal, so I had to use humanity at a bonfire so that I wasn't restoring any of my health. I figured that's a perfectly reasonable exception, given the fact that I wasn't healing. So I ran off to the Daughter of Chaos, unlocked the shortcut, and proceeded from there to fight the boss, then challenge Gwyn and finally beat the game.

The run only took me about eight hours to complete (I'm no speedrunner, so that's about as good as it gets from me) and a whole lot of dying. Much like the no armor run I did a few weeks ago, the amount of mistakes I could make are few. Any health loss meant less health I could lose when challenging a boss, so the path to fight the boss got even more stressful than it already was. It felt good to complete this challenge, and I do look forward to doing more challenge runs. If you're interested in seeing some, my Twitch account is TheBookKing2125. My stream schedule is pretty wacky, but I try to stream about once a day. I don't do much commentary, but if there is a high demand for it, that could very well change.

    Farming Humanity in the Depths

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 08:35 PM PDT

I'm a new player to Dark Souls, and during my play through my friend suggested that I try and build up my humanity in the Depths before tackling blight town. After 43 runs taking out all the rats, I've only gained 1 humanity back. I have 5 humanity on, but I don't have the covetous serpent ring. Am I farming in the wrong place, or doing something else wrong? Is there an easier way to gain humanity at a low level? Any help is appreciated!

High riposte damage with insufficient stats

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 09:20 PM PDT

So today I was finishing a run, rushing to Gwyn with Chaos Zweihander, 22 STR / 22 DEX and a Hornet Ring. Since Zwei needs 24 STR, I knew I had to do a 2H ripostes.

However, after one parry I messed up and riposted with one hand. But to my surprise, it still dealt quite a lot of damage - about 750. It's definitely less than 2H riposte (duh) which dealt over 1100 damage, but still MUCH more than I expected, since I didn't have required stats. I have few theories why, but I'm really not sure about either of them.

    Can someone expand on this?

I beat O&S for the first time ever, what a rush! Recorded it too.

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 02:24 PM PDT

Here's the video of the fight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFftRtU9qkQ

It took me 7 attempts, and on the last go I burned through nearly all my humanity to stay alive, but I feel so satisfied to have taken down what might be the most iconic of DS bosses. I've beaten Bloodborne, Sekiro and I beat Dark Souls 3 last year, and this year I finally went back to the big daddy of the series.

It feels like a rite of passage as a Fromsoft fan to finally be on a proper playthrough, I understand the persisting love for the original and I'm enjoying it way more than I expected to. I thought the older, clunky controls and the aged graphics might have lessened my enjoyment but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

I want to just say it's a pleasure to be part of such a passionate community. It's so fun to talk to people about these games and I'm so thankful for the friends and strangers who have encouraged me to dive into them and continue to inspire me, whether it be with amazing fan art, helpful tips or just by showing enthusiasm for the series.

I'm making my way through the Duke's Archives now so Seath is my next target, wish me luck, and may the flames guide you fellow Undead! Praise the Sun!

I realised the Mountain vs Oberyn fight in GOT is a great way to teach a beginner about builds

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 01:27 AM PDT

A friend was finding it all overwhelming until I brought this up.

"If you want a slow but very powerful guy invest in strength. You'll get punished by faster enemies but will tank more hits and not be punished as much for mistakes"

"If you wanna cartwheel around and be quick with your opponents just invest in Dex and get a dark wood grain ring. It'll be more fun to play and watch, and IMO even better if you play your cards right - but you can be punished for being careless."

"And yeah, level to vitality and endurance whatsoever"

I know there are more builds but these two are the ones I usually recommend usually to someone starting out. I still do think the game is very hard to get into for someone unless helped, so keep your peers from going hollow!

My first experience with a Dark Souls Randomizer

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 01:14 AM PDT

I'm a person with somewhere around 2000 hours of experience across the Soulsborne franchise, 150-200 of which are in Dark Souls 1 (generally my least favorite of them besides Demon's Souls). I've never done a randomizer of a Souls game before today and holy shit is it FUN.

I got the item and enemy randomizers installed and set up to my preferences. Starting class was a Warrior doing his best Yellowfinger Heysel cosplay by wearing the Xanthous set and using a Pickaxe. I left my cell and saw nothing major out of the ordinary except a couple of T-posing hollows. I walked a bit forward and saw a flash of blue to my right and saw Sif having a seizure in Stray Demon's arena, which I guess was her new cage. I couldn't reach the puppy to console at the moment so I headed forward to the first bonfire. I entered Asylum Demon's arena and there's a Gargoyle's tail just floating near the door. I smacked it and heard its owner get pissed above me. Unable to defend myself I ran out and headed to the next bonfire to grab my gear. After struggling to kill some worms who were chilling near Oscar's cell I resolved to find a weapon that was not arbitrarily categorized as a Hammer, and fast.

Not long later I'm leaving the Asylum and hoping to sweet Jesus that I can find something to replace this Godsforsaken excuse for a weapon. I land in Firelink Shrine and make my rounds to grab some gear, one of the chests near the graveyard has a new weapon for me, the Blacksmith's Hammer (sigh), which I use to deal with some dogs and a couple of Crystal Golems chilling in the graveyard and find nothing of import besides a Dark Ember.

Further exploration brings me to New Londo Ruins, where an encounter with a Chained Prisoner caused me to shit myself when I saw how little damage I dealt to it, so I decided to head to Valley of Drakes, where I didn't fare much better. I turned left and like an idiot sprinted towards Crossbreed Priscilla, she got pissed so I stole the pile of rubbish and a Thorolund Talisman she was guarding, and past her was a Skelton Beast, and like that, I realized I was probably dead. I somehow managed to slip by and past him was a gold Bell Gargoyle, who I also ran past to get to Darkroot Garden.

I exited the bonfire cave just in time to see a Bell Gargoyle swan dive off the path above me into the abyss below, netting me some free titanite and souls. I head further up towards Havel's Tower and to my left see a Stray Demon running towards me like a fat kid after an ice cream truck. I kick down the door into Havel's crib just in time for the fatass to come crashing into the door. I run upstairs, ignoring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who is chasing me with an oversized bat. I chain parried him and got a small stack of Gold Coins as my reward. I ran upstairs and rolled through some barrels hoping to find the usual Titanite Lizard, but some hollow jumped out instead so I killed him.

I ran into Tauros Demon's arena and saw some shmuck with machetes standing at the other end of the bridge. I climbed up the ladder and killed a Painting Guardian who I guess was on vacation or something. Capra Demon literally used the same move over and over until I killed him. I got past him, talked to Solaire and headed down the bridge where a pig was waiting, I dodged it and ran past, picking up a Demon's Spear (thank Jesus) on the way to the bonfire. I switched to that and realized that it is more than a little overpowered early game.

I made my way to Andre without issue and upgraded my spear with some Demon Titanite I found laying around, bought a Black Knight Greatsword for 50 souls, and headed up to Bell Gargoyles arena. I walked in and found Pinwheel, who I guess was out looking for the dude who stole the Mask of the Father. After I explained to him who Giant Dad was the embarrassment must have been too much for him and he dropped dead on the spot before one of the Gargoyles on the roof jumped down and slipped on one of the roof shingles and fell to his doom. I rang the bell and said hi to Oswald, who obviously had no idea how much a Soul of a Great Hero is worth because he was selling one for less than 500 souls.

I made my way to the Moonlight Butterfly's arena, where the Gargoyle from the Undead Church must have wandered off to in search of a snack because I couldn't find the butterfly anywhere. I headed upstairs and found Andre's twin bent over holding some lube. I left and headed back to the Asylum to bring the warden back his missing key that I found in the forest. While I was there I let Sif out of her cage, but she bit me so I had to put her down. I still hadn't found a key for the door that leads down to Capra Demon so I explored Blightown from the entrance in the Valley of Drakes.

I climbed down the scaffolding and once I was down the elevator Ornstein and a Gargoyle came sliding in like they owned the place, I ran to the nearest bonfire before I ended up with a polearm up my ass. After sitting down I noticed Ornstein sliding straight towards me and dodged and ran out to pick some shit up before Ornstein's twin showed up. I continued running towards the Great Hollow and their triplet came out from behind the tree with his buddy, another Gargoyle. I grabbed some items in the area before being smashed by a Berenike Knight who somehow beat one of the Ornstein triplets in the race to kill me.

I headed to Quelaag's boss room with the triplets and their pet Gargoyles in pursuit, and upon entering realized that they were actually quadruplets. I showed Quellag's new boyfriend how to do anal and made my way to Eingyi and the Fair Lady and noticed that I got like 3000 souls for seemingly no reason. I sat at the bonfire and it happened again. Realizing that some idiot was probably trying to bathe in lava I capitalized on their stupidity for a while and got some levels out of it.

I walked into Lost Izalith and saw a Golden Crystal Golem T-posing near the bonfire. Since he and his buddies were chill I let them be and headed to Ceaseless Discharge's arena. Papa Nito was chilling there, probably on his way to say hi to his nephew or something but neither of us saw him anywhere. I politely asked him for some souls and went on my merry way to the Great Hollow.

I found a Very Large Ember on my way down and found a Demon Firesage inexplicably inside a tree without setting it on fire. I killed him before he got rid of my only way out of Ashen Lake and found his brother patrolling the lake. He must've realized what I'd done to his brother and started waddling towards me but I think he tripped on the unnecessarily tall sand dune because he fell into the water and drowned. I headed to the Stone Dragon and cut off his tail, which he was holding a Soul Arrow scroll in for some reason and headed back up to Firelink Shrine.

This is only the beginning of my experience with Dark Souls Randomized, but it has certainly been a completely different game so far. I've thoroughly enjoyed it so far and look forward to playing more.
