I told my GF, that I would marry her if she can beat Dark Souls. She just first-tried Gargoyles after 2 hours in game. Help me find a wedding ring?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 08:44 PM PDT

It of course not serious, we are joking about these things, since we're 26 and 23 yo. She sometimes comes up with question, why didn't I ask her to marry me already since all of her friend are getting engaged or having kids? But it's a joke from her side too, we live together for 5 years now and we're currently trying to build our first house, and we agreed on the fact that wedding is not the most important thing right now and would change relatively nothing for us, besides the fact that it would cost lots of money which we don't have - we need them for the house.

But she just finished her Witcher 3 quarantine madness and needed a new game, and she knows that I have like 500hrs total in all From games, so she wanted to try it. I put on a joke about the ring, because I know she get so mad and ragey ... but last night she first tried gargoyles and also Lautrec and she said to me "I'm coming for that ring baby". She's more succesfull than I thought she'd be, of course I gave her some advices (about Lautrec, Uchigatana early etc.)

But I was thinking about it, and if it turns out she will love the game just like I do, maybe custom made engagement ring from Dark Souls woudn't be a bad idea after all? Which ring would you choose? Life Ring for obvious reasons? I like Darkmoon Ring from it's design, because it thin and ideal as engagement ring, but not so spectacular. She also really loves cats so I'm expecting her to wear Silver-cat ring all game... :D

I've started my annual Darksouls Black Metal run

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 10:15 PM PDT

A couple months back I had joked about doing as such with a couple of people on this reddit, and I think it should become a thing. I have chosen Sallow The Sun's North I, II, & III as my album of choice since it's two and a half hours long. The run goes as such, anything goes, any glitches or skips, any builds, but you must complete the game before the album ends. Most importantly you must enjoy yourself. Since we're in quarantine I challenge any fans of black metal to complete this and post what album you had completed it in. Stay inside, stay safe, and have fun. If we get enough to gain traction I hope to make this an event every year. - Hails, Levi

Why did Gwyn give part of his soul to the Four Kings?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 06:19 PM PDT

Their Bequeathed Lord Soul Shard says:

Soul of one of the Four Kings, who fell to Dark. A fragment of a Lord Souls discovered at the dawn of the Age of Fire.

Lord Gwyn recognized the foresight of these four great leaders of New Londo, and granted them their ranks and the fragments of a great soul. Although this is not a full Lord Soul, it can still satiate the Lord Vessel.

Though, what does this mean? I don't expect an answer directly from the game(though that would be neat, I suppose), more reasoning through what foresight they may have had that attracted Gwyn. The First Flame must have already started fading for New Londo to have been what it was. The Crestfallen Warrior says:

Have you been to the ruins of New Londo below? Just head down the stairs, and take the lift. It's certainly worth a visit. It was once an Undead city. You may find a clue or two. Unless the ghosts find you first... Keh heh heh heh!

There isn't anything that I'm aware of that suggests that he's wrong here, so the Four Kings had already been ruling the Undead, as their city-state was a city-state for the Undead. This seems like something Gwyn would disapprove of fairly strongly. The Undead Asylum was constructed to house Undead presumably around this point in time, given that there was enough time to relocate two demon guards there, suggesting that the existing social structures didn't face the urgency that led to Gwyn linking the Flame. Why would Gwyn allow a city-state of the Undead he feared to not only exist and thrive, but receive his blessing?

Presumably, this all happened before the Four Kings started collaborating with Kaathe and leading the Darkwraiths, otherwise, the whole thing becomes even more confusing. Also, as a bit of a side question, where did the idea of the Sealers being Sealers come from? The Crimson set(other than the mask) says:

x of the sorcerers who flooded New Londo to seal away the Darkwraiths, and the Four Kings who descended into Dark.

The Sealers were once known as healers, and the bright crimson was a symbol of that.

Did they just decide to switch from healing to sealing on their own? Where did all the water they flooded the city with come from? There probably aren't serious answers to these questions, but while I was writing this I got to thinking about them and the Sealers are just a little silly.

    Bone to pick with invaders

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 05:37 AM PDT

Why do people think it is cool to gear up crazy builds at low level just to invade new players, murder them, and point down at their corpse? Where's the fun in that? I don't understand people.

I just beat Chaos Witch Queelag first try!

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 08:09 PM PDT

I'm a first timer, and this is the first boss I can really say that about. Well I did beat Pinwheel first try, but not only is that fight super easy but I was also wearing a full set of stone giant armor for it which I feel kind of bad about. I didn't use a guide for him though, so I guess he still counts. I've been trying to wear it less ever since, both because I'm definitely not supposed to have it this early and also because I can't repair it. I don't want the game to be too easy after all.

While I do have the rite of kindling, I only used 9 Estus Flasks for the fight anyways, so it's as though I beat hear without that advantage. I didn't wear my stone giant armor, either, though my weapon was a +2 Black Knight Greatsword which is quite strong. But yeah, first boss I've ever beaten fair and square on the first try. I just felt like sharing, I don't know how hard people generally consider that boss to be, but I'm still proud of myself right now.

    Feel My Pain

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 12:40 AM PDT

    • I have been working hard on completing all achievements for DS1 prepare to die edition on PC.
    • I'm just coming to the end of NG4, finished crafting weapons, collecting spells etc.
    • Decided to go and kill all optional bosses for those last few achievements.
    • Check achievement list, see where I'm at.
    • left to do: generic finish all achievements; alternate ending; ......knights honour.
    • I thought this was to just collect boss soul weapons, turns out I'm missing 1 weapon ... Pricillas Tail...

TL;DR I killed a boss near the end of the game which I needed to cut the tail off of for my final achievement. I now need to battle through NG5.

Just finished my first SL1 run! What's next!?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 04:25 AM PDT

Yeah! It's all done! Gwyn is gwon and I had the great satisfaction of setting myself on fire!

I mostly followed the YMFAH guide tbh - I'm not man enough to work out the strats for myself

Manus and Gwyn definitely were definitely the toughest to go through. On my first (and only other) playthrough - I cheesed them both by keeping my black knight shield and strafing. This time I was determined to not use a shield and just go hypermode. Oh Lawdy... Oh lawdy lawdy...

I'm gonna move on to DS2 (possibly my favourite tbh) - any ideas for challenge runs? I've already done no death, no bonfire and a SL1 run.

Finally got my first Ornstein and Smough kill

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 03:50 AM PDT

It's my first time trying to complete a playthrough in DS. I played the game a bit in the past, fooled around trying different weapons, sorceries and so on - but never got further into the game. Got my ass kicked countless times, but I kept playing and trying. Eventually I can say I got hooked to Dark Souls! So, decided it's about damn time to try to beat this game.

Started as the wanderer this time, slowly upgraded the scimitar, but the weapon itself was feeling lacking in damage, so once I freed Laurentius from the Depths, I got the pyromancy flame and started burning. The big changing point was getting Quelaag's soul, and using it to make he Furysword - suddenly my crappy-feeling scimitar turned into a really deadly flaming weapon, loving it so far!

As for the (in)famous Anor Londo duo - they kicked my butt a few times, but on the 4th attempt I got both of them. That fight felt challenging, especially Ornstein was annoying for me. But when I finally defeated them - the feeling of satysfying victory was real!

I remember I was a lot of comments in the past, people crying about how damn annoying and tough these two are, same about Sen's Fortress being a cancer place - well, turns out it wasn't all that bad, and it's really better just to try it yourself and brave it, not relying on such comments.

It's the furthest I've got in the game so far, and most propably there's a metric ton of suffering ahead of me, but I'm looking ahead to it.

I know all this is propably not that great achievement yet, and may bring as much as a small smile on veterans faces reading it - but thought I'd share my little bit. I know I most propably still need a lot of practice to "git gud" with my skills, but if I managed to get it this far, I think I can make the rest of the way - and one day, start playing the NG+'s aswell.

Should i leave the DLC till the final boss ?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 05:26 AM PDT

I killed sif so i am Going to miss the secret cutscene anyhow.

I'm wondering if By finishing the dlc my character will be overleveled for the rest of the game, and I don't want to ruin the experience of the original game so my question is should I finish the dlc and then continue the game or should i play the game till before the last boss and then return to the dlc ?

Problem with some unique Catalysts and Talismans

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 03:46 AM PDT

Izalith Catalyst should have let us use pyromancies with it. I would like to see a more complete Lost Izalith to be honest. Witches of Izalith are masters of pyromancy so it would be cool if we could use their catalyst for pyros too. Other than that, it doesn't have something special, even damage is low.

Also same with Black Witch Staff from DS2. It has magic, dark and fire scaling but you can't cast pyromancies with it and most of the hexes are casted with a chime so you still only use it for sorceries.

Another thing came to my mind are Velka's Talisman and the magic variant (Darkmoon Catalyst maybe, I don't remember).

Velka's Talisman let's you use miracles based on your INT stat but you still need the minimum FTH requirements to cast. Some spells have high FTH requirements and if you have enough FTH to cast them already, you won't be needing Velka's Talisman because it has lower damage.

It should let us cast them without FTH requirements. For example if a spell needs 40 FTH, we should be able to cast them with 40 INT instead. Damage would be lower accordingly to balance it though. This way, we could have more freedom since different enemies have different resistances.

Why don't we have unique catalysts? Or if they will not have special features, why make them look like they're unique?

    Introductory SL50 PvP build

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:01 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I have seen a lot of people complaining about PvP due to the back stabs, lag abuse, and so on.

A lot of the people complaining are attempting to create meta level builds and compete in Oolacile.

I just wanted to make a post with a build I created that really helped me get started with the PvP and that can be adjusted to help you learn.

This build is centered around a few things:

    1. Mid level pvp. This is done because most people looking for PvP at this level, like you, will not be experts
    2. Survivability: hard to learn how to play if you die in 3 seconds because you don't know how to avoid backstabs yet
    3. Grindabality: this one is a bit of a dick move... But if you're low on humanity you can invade others and you'll probably destroy them.

    The idea is this:

There are a good amount of people in anor londo doing invasions, and they have varying levels of skill. Letting yourself get invaded by them is a great way to practice.

If you're winning too much, it's time to nerf yourself. Swap out mask of the mother, reduce your poise, reduce your defense, etc.

If you ever start to run low on humanity, you can invade and you will win 95% of the time..... When invading keep in mind that you're OP, so try not to be a dick. Don't use your pyromancy. Maybe lower your poise on purpose. Don't kill the host while they're fighting enemies.

If I'm in a 3v1 I personally say all bets are off and that's why I included Fire Tempest..

Lastly, I chose this stamina and health distribution just because I like the look of the dark set. You could optimize this for the best armor etc, but making yourself any more powerful than this really won't help you learn.

I recommend picking some armor that you think is look good and specing based on that.

Even with my current stats there are better armor combos than what I actually wear, I just really don't recommend becoming 100% optimal.

This is the actual build I'm using, like I said before, it's not optimal, but it will help you learn and provided a decent amount of variety as you play.

    https://mugenmonkey.com/darksouls/636412

    Some other notes:

People just holding shield up can be pressured with great combustion.

The crossbow is really useful against mages. They usually have low poise, so you can interrupt their casting. Use heavy bolts.

You can use whatever weapon. Just make it lightning or Chaos. I like chaos because the fire effect is cool. Just keep in mind that the weight will force you to change your stat distribution.

Ring wise you can really use whatever. The extra poise is great when you start, but you should probably switch to something else pretty quickly... Too much poise will give you bad habits I find

Anor londo is the most active location, but you should also be able to invade and get invaded in pretty much any area after anor londo as well

And seriously, if you decide to use this for invasions, try not to be a dick

    Edit:

Disclaimer. I'm not a DS expert. I'm still learning. Other people on this sub probably have even better ideas and recommendations, so please share them!

Just beat DS for the 1st time

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 05:53 AM PDT

So, after 65 hours in 10 days I finally finished the game! There were a lot of things I loved about the game: masterpiece music, the most beautiful ever Anor Londo, addiction to slaying more and more enemies and exploring. But I want to talk about the one major drawback of the whole game which is...the sorcerer's damage. I decided to start and beat my game as a sorcerer. I didn't upgrade anything but my INT, so I reached 45 and then 50 in no time. I was doing so much damage, every boss died in a few seconds. This ruined the game for me. You see, I heard a lot about the renown Artorias, Smough and Ornstein and other legendary characters, that they are not only loved by everyone, but also are the hardest. I almost started the game because of them, I've seen so many fan arts and memes and cosplay. I, also, wanted to fight the final boss because other NPCs in the game clearly told me that this dude is The Boss among the bosses. And what do you think? My excitement was ruined. I was capturing my boss fights so I can tell you the exact amount of spells I needed to kill the bosses:

-Artorias: x3 crystal soul spears and x2 soul spears, killed him in literally few seconds, almost didn't even see his moveset, attacks, nothing. -Smough and Ornstein: x4 homing soulmass and x3 soul spear. -Manus: x3 crystal soul spears and x2 dark bead. -Gwyn: x3 dark bead and x1 homing soulmass. They didn't even let me enough time to enjoy that amazing piano theme.

Why didn't they patched and balance sorcerer in all these years? Why didn't the whole community force them to do so? Why some stupid Crystal Golems are way harder to be killed than any BOSS? I'm so confused. The only hard boss was Seath because it was impossible to kill him with my sorceries. Why couldn't they make more bosses with magical defense like Seath? Calamet was nearly the only boss I enjoyed because he didn't die from a couple of spells. I also think it worth nothing that I obviously wasn't making myself intentionally overpowered because it's my first playthrough and I didn't take the master key as my starting gift. I was just playing as intended.

I'm so disappointed:( I wish I played a physical melee class instead...After beating the final boss I didn't feel joy, I didn't feel like I went through challenging hell, I don't feel satisfied enough, you know? I will replay the game the hard way (making a melee build with the new character) someday, but I will never remember my first experience as something impressive.

    Asking for weapon recommendation (str&dex)

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 04:49 AM PDT

I'm using a claymore +10 atm and just beat smough and that other guy w. lightning.

Afaik, claymore scales with both str and dex, so I have like 25 points into each already, but I'm kinda getting tired of this weapon.

Any other good weapon recommendation for PvE that scales w. str and dex?
