    The Moss Merchant

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 07:55 AM PST

Today I decided to start a new run as a sorcerer since I always use melee builds and I wanted to switch things up. With a trusty build guide open on my phone I hopped in and began creating my character. As I was dialing in the features of my latest monstrosity, my cursor hovered over the purple hair option. That's when it hit me.

All of my meticulous planning went out the window in an instant. I would no longer be playing as a man in pajamas waggling a glowstick around. My Wanderer took the master key and set off on her quest to become the person her purple hair had always destined her to be.

    The Moss Merchant.

My goal was to acquire massive amounts of moss as quickly as possible. I made a suicide run for the great scythe and then helped a few people kill the gargoyles to get my souls up. Andre sold me the Crest, and after slaying pupper, butterfly, and hydra I farmed the Darkroot NPCs for 2 hours (I lost all my souls a few times because I suck). With an absolutely mental number of souls on hand, I visited the female undead merchant and purchased all the red and purple moss I could carry.

With phase 1 complete, I began the trek down to Blighttown. The journey was treacherous, and many dung pies stood in my way. At least I didn't have to worry about being poisoned. When I finally reached the bonfire at the bottom of that fetid lagoon, I breathed a sigh of relief, put my sign down, and waited.

A few moments later I was summoned. This was it. The moment of truth. A giantdad wielding a gravelord sword bowed to me as I phased into his reality. Ignoring his greeting, I immediately dropped 10 blooming purple moss on the floor and gestured towards them. He walked over, picked them up, and jumped for joy before spamming his shield for a few seconds. It all went perfectly. He got the gimmick.

Over the next couple of hours I relaxed by the Blighttown bonfire and awaited the summons of my fellow players. Time and time again I visited another world, gave them some moss to negate the harsh swamp's bite, and then proceeded to annihilate Qeulaag. Many folks appreciated the help, but if the host looked like they knew what they were doing I let them fight Quelaag solo while I used my ludicrous amount of red moss to write "HI!" in the middle of the boss arena using item drops.

I was very generous with my moss giveaways, and even received some fine items in return. However, as my supply dwindled I was forced to become more conservative with my handouts. From 10 moss a player down to 5, then 3, then 1, until only a few purple moss remained. I took one last look across the wretched swamp I had grown so find of, killed my Quelaag, and made the climb back up to Firelink.

My hard work did not go unrewarded. Some people paid me with varying grades of titanite, and I killed Quelaag countless times. I enjoyed taking my vastly overleveled character into Anor Londo, where my +15 scythe made quick work of the locals. I even had the pleasure of tag teaming O&S with one of my former customers.

My character will breeze through the rest of the game, racking up hundreds of thousands of souls in a matter of hours before parrying God to death. I have played this game many times, and will do so many more times in the future, but I don't think I'll ever have a more wholesome experience than the time I spent as

    The Moss Merchant.

    Was Seath the primary antagonist?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 08:20 PM PST

It looks like he has his sticky claws in almost every bad thing that happened in the first dark souls! And we could see his influence from the very beginning of the game.

Metal pigs, hydras, locked Havels, deadly clams, kidnapped girls, snake boys, making magic, etc. etc. Almost every area has a little Seath in it. He's like Rasputin sans religion.

I get that plot-wise the serpents pushed the plot narrative but story-wise, many of the obstacles placed there were by Seath!

I'm seeing Seath everywhere! Am I over thinking it?

    Rage quit=hollowing

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 12:31 AM PST

So this may be a known thing but i was thinking while playing the game again. I've got a friend who's never completed the game because he's more grind gud than git gud. But anyways. So we're told that many have attempted the pilgrimage but we're the first to succeed. Now are the characters that people played that rage quit after having died to o&s (or some other way) many times an undead that didn't succeed and went hollow being forgotten to time. So I'd contend that there are 3 endings to the game, 2 where you are the chosen undead and one where you fail repeatedly and go hollow.

Dark Souls 1 better than 3 and others?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 03:42 PM PST

I started the series late with Bloodborne, then Dark Souls 3, then Sekiro, and finally Dark Souls Remastered. And I am surprised to say I think the first one is my favorite. I had to learn how to use a shield the same way people had to learn to ditch it with the later games. I just think it's incredible, a game this old doesnt feel old to me. It's so dense that in some ways I feel like it was superior to more recent games with more funding and resources at their disposal. How has the order in which you adopted the series colored you experience?

    Low Level Invasions are Cancer

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 04:15 AM PST

So, these days I started playing the remastered and while I was taking the Drake Sword, someone invaded me, I already knew that I would have no chance when he appeared with the father's mask and front-stab me, so I turned around the pillar and kicked the idiot off the bridge, it was annoying, but I didn't think anything of it until I got ready to help people against the gargoyles

Of the 14 times that I was summoned, 9 were invasions, and there isn't a lot we can do against someone with upgraded equipment

What's wrong with these people? Are they so bad at the game that they need to masturbate their egos by winning one-sided fights?

    Another "beat the game" post.

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 08:49 PM PST

TLDR: Reading everyone's stories on this sub tempered my resolve to beat Dark Souls and not go hollow.

I really want to thank this community.

I just finished my first play-through of DS remastered (all bosses, 30 hours play time). I only got into FromSoft games last year, starting with Bloodborne which I played to death. I moved on to Remastered but went temporarily hollow as I got cursed and was stuck in the catacombs. I moved on to DS3 which was also a fantastic game and inspired me to go back and pick up Remastered where I left off. A week later and I'm putting down my controller, watching the credits.

I have been lurking on this sub for a while and really enjoy reading other peoples' experiences of the game. In particular, I found that reading everyone's horror stories of struggling against certain bosses, getting stuck in Ash Lake, or falling victim to the curse in the Depths lead me to expect the worst from Dark Souls. This meant I was pleasantly surprised to find that, while this game was definitely a challenge in many parts, on the whole it wasn't as difficult as I assumed it would be based on anecdotes from other players.

    SPOILERS BELOW:

Parts that I found to be easier than expected:

    - Blight Town: I took the sneaky shortcut in from Valley of Drakes, so I got to skip the majority of this hell-hole. I had no way to cure toxic so I was thrilled to find out that the blowdart snipers don't respawn. Once they were out of the way I could explore in peace.

    - Ash Lake: I went down the Great Hollow before beating Quelaag and was annoyed at myself for falling for this trap. However the area was awesome to experience and getting back up only took one try.

    - Sen's Fortress: Aside from the boulder messing with me by spontaneously changing directions, this area wasn't too bad. Once I found the second bonfire, the roof section was pretty much smooth-sailing.

    - Tomb of Giants: The hardest part was actually finding this place; I kept getting lost in the damn catacombs. It didn't help that I homeward-boned out of Pinwheel's arena. Once I found the darkness area I got through it all and did Nito without dying. Skull Lantern OP.

Parts that were still absolute bullshit:

    - Undead Parish: The bridge dragon absolutely murdering me was my first "wow! Fuck this" moment. I lost all my Taurus Demon souls, which was a big deal at the start of the game. I struggled a fair bit with this area and was so relieved to finally reach Andre.

    - The Catacombs: After getting cursed in Depths and not having a purging stone, I thought it would be a great idea to go explore the catacombs as cursed level 29 noob. This place broke me and turned me hollow for a month or so while I played DS3. It was very cathartic coming back much later and steamrolling the skeletons.

    - Ornstein & Smough: This was actually the hardest boss fight of the game for me. It was also one of the most fun as I had some friends over at the time who gave conflicting advice but excellent encouragement. I think it was actually more painful for them spectating than for me getting slaughtered 10+ times.

    - Bed of Chaos: What were they thinking?! My housemate watched me do this fight and just laughed every time I got walloped into a hole. I must have died so many times and in every possible way. I definitely raged my share here. It probably would have made for a hilarious stream.

I want to thank everybody that shares their experiences with this amazing game, offers advice, shitposts, whatever. Your posts are read and enjoyed by someone, somewhere and they really appreaciate it. This is an awesome subreddit.

Got this game after completing ds3, any tips?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 02:56 AM PST

Hey guys, kind of a new player here, new to the game, not to the saga. I just wanted to know some differences between ds1 and ds3, like what's viable and what is something you absolutely need to know before diving right into this game. Any comment is greatly appreciated and if any of you wants to help me through this journey (I know there's a sub related to this, I'll post there as well when needed), I'll be playing on ps4 (don't think theres any crossplay, is there?).

As always, praise the sun (also excited to finally starting to understand the whole story, not just the conclusion to it)

[DS1 Unpopular Opinion] I find it drastically easier to kill Smough first

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 03:02 PM PST

Title is self-explanatory, though I feel that it would also help to expound on why I find Smough easier to kill first. The reasoning I have is two-pronged - to begin, Ornstein is incredibly agile and counterattacking him often results in him hopping away before your swing lands; Smough, on the other hand, is a colossal target and I find that if I keep my camera focused on Ornstein while beating away at him, I only have one enemy to worry about as hugging Smough often results in his hammer missing you completely. The super forms are another story - I find super Smough harder for two reasons: the first is that his hammer charge is incredibly hard to avoid, especially at close range. The second reason boils down to his damned ass slam attack. Seriously, I find the AoE of that thing to be at least twice as large as Ornstein's. With Ornstein, I find that I can reliably dodge all of his attacks in his super form, so I actually find it easier to go for Smough first.

Completed Dark Souls for the first time.

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 01:15 AM PST

A little backstory. My FromSoft experience began with Dark Souls on the 360 back when it was given away for free with Games with Gold. I played it back in around 2013/2014 and rang the two bells getting as far as the beams with throwing knives in Anor Londo. Then I went hollow. 2018, Bloodborne was given away on PSN+, I played and got Gascoigne before giving up again. Then finally last year after watching some video on Sekiro that piqued my interest in the game I gave it a shot thanks to my friend who shares PS games with me. That was a trial, and through fit, fury, and persistence I managed to beat Sekiro. It took me 2 weeks with on-off sessions to defeat Isshin but the time I did, I didn't die once. Then I went to Bloodborne since I owned the game, and the world, story, art, and gameplay of Sekiro left such a sweet flavor in my mouth. I absolutely LOVED Bloodborne. Everything about it I loved and ended up playing through multiple times, purchasing the DLC, and Platinuming the game. Then I delved into Dark Souls.

My experience with Dark Souls is honestly not as pleasant with Sekiro or Bloodborne. Not because of the age or graphics, or gameplay or anything superficial like that, but because it just didn't catch my interest. The world was too bleak, too dark, too barren for me to grasp on it. Then what was interesting to me was either too weird or too typical fantasy for me to really care. On the surface, the art and world of Dark Souls is traditional fantasy with the expected armor styles, architectures, enemies, etc. It's really honestly kind of boring. To me at least. The gameplay is alright I think, but the heavy RPG elements kind of drive me away from it, but are also what makes it fun I'm sure.

In my 29hr 47min playthrough I focused on Skill wielding a 15+ Standard Reinforcement Falchion with light armor and fast roll. A lightweight build focused on dodging and damage over time. It fit my play style obviously, but I never felt that it was a fine tuned experience. Bloodborne and Sekiro are designed for a specific type of combat which you must learn and master, Dark Souls, while it's good in its own way, focuses on player intended gameplay. Which I find boring because if it does everything well, it can't do one particular thing exceptionally well.

The World and Story of Dark Souls I thought was interesting and after some research and videos I think I've got a good grasp on it. However, again, I find the high-fantasy, ambiguous, yet also stereotypical story a bit dull. There weren't very many OMG story moments I found or discovered, or any ideas to really pick apart. The whole world just honestly feels kind of empty. A lot of the areas and moments just lack importance to me and I think a HUGE part of that is the lack of music in the game. It's just an isolating, empty, dark experience which I'm sure is a big draw, but seems to wear on my after a while. I've watched the YouTuber, TheActMan's, video "Why Dark Souls is a Masterpiece", and I think he does a spectacular job at verbalizing and explaining a lot of the good and story of the game; after watching that I do find an appreciation for it Dark Souls, but I just don't really think it's for me.

Beating Gwyn took me only 5 tries. After I figured out that weapon reinforcements were the way to beat the game, it became fairly easy. I did "cheat" a bit by looking up how to get to +15 Std, Rnf. which made all of the late game stuff easy, defeating almost all the bosses on my first try, but fuck Bed of Chaos. I did beat Ornstein and Smough with only a +5 sword though which was a fucking fight.

Overall, the wonder and awe most feel with Dark Souls I don't feel. It's by no means a bad game but rather a good one and I really do appreciate the lore and everything it has to offer. But to me Sekiro and Bloodborne are better with Bloodborne reigning supreme. Although DS carries a lot of the FromSoft trademarks I love especially the ambiguous storytelling, I just find the story and world dull by comparison. Bloodborne's story and focus on character, backstory, storytelling, and Lovecraftian elements make it so much more interesting to me. Sekiro's world and story were also cohesive with the world and art design melding the entire experience together. Dark Souls is just missing something that I can't describe to make me latch onto it... a cohesiveness, or a foundationally unique style/concept/experience... something that doesn't make it work for me.

It was a good game but I think that if I never played Dark Souls 2 or 3 I'd be ok with it. Maybe yall could describe what makes this game so special to you. But for me it just lacks something.

    Nito Fight

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 07:07 PM PST

Kinda don't know how to post yet, but yeah Nito. The entire area of Giants scared the shit outta me. Everything from Nito to the baby skeletons. I was super afraid of facing Nito, and when I fought him, I killed him first try. This guy was the most terrifying thing I have seen in all of Dark Souls so far, and I beat him first try. I barely had to fight his minions. Any attack he landed was his gravelord spell, and his aura attack. It was super easy, and I'm thinking "What the hell?" So short rant aside he was a rather boring fight. I put way more effort into preparing for the fight than I had to. His song was pretty good for the mood at least. Still terrified of him and his area though. Thanks for listening in on my stupid rant.

Highs and lows in Anor Londo

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 03:45 PM PST

First playthru, loving this game. It's been a roller coaster in the big city.

High: the foreshadowing. Statues, dragon heads, bones tell me I'm soon to meet the infamous Ornstein and Smough.

High: finally enough practice with Silver Knights to take them on confidently. They're probably the best teacher in the game so far regarding pacing and anticipation.

Low: they're still tough in close quarters and, cornered in a panic, I accidentally hit Siegmeyer of Catarina, whom I then kill in self-defense. Oh, my heart.

High: looking for quick progress in the huge antechamber to O&S, I run for the main door lever, and discover that it's possible to pin down one of the massive guardian knights by turning said lever.

Low/high: O&S are kicking my ass, but their character design is magnificent and the ferocity of their attacks is so fitting.

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 08:50 PM PST

Played and dearly love every game in the soulsborne series and every fromsoft game for that matter, but I'm struggling to enjoy DS on switch and I'm not one to complain about much either, ever. I think it's because usually when I play on console (Playstation), I do this thing where I hold my index finger at a weird angle to run but my right thumb is still free to steer the camera, and this is a lot more uncomfortable on the switch. I have a switch lite fwiw
