Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread!

Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play!

For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls

Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games.

Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned:

    Dark Souls: Remastered

    Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

    Dark Souls III

    Our recommendations for safe modding

*This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account.

    Basic Steps:

    Make a separate Steam account

Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library.

Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory.

Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation.

Set Steam to "off line" mode.

Install the mods and perform any necessary setup.

Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods!

Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online!

Just beat dark souls for the first time

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 07:52 PM PST

Surprisingly my hardest time was with Gwyn I cannot parry like how everyone else on YouTube does it. I did a strength build just dumped majority of my points into strength. Once I found great club and googled how scaling worked, I knew it was going to be my weapon to the end of the game. Great club+15, I literally bludgeon bosses and enemies but the start up time is slow so I used some heavy armor so that I wouldn't get staggered each hit. First started with knights armor (started as knight class) moved onto elite knight then Havel The Rock's armor. Feels good being a walking tank and destroying everyone. Now I'm going to be doing a dex build.

    did some art of artorias

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 07:51 PM PST

Beat my first play through. Pretty sure I did everything wrong but I loved it. (Bit of a rant + catharsis)

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 11:19 AM PST

Blind obviously. I share the same backstory as quite a few posts on here, I tried many times over the years but this time I finally committed.

So basically I picked knight, didn't choose master key . Did Burg > capra demon > depths > blight town > bell tower.

That's ignoring the fact I spent a few hours getting wrecked in the catacombs and ruins first...

I didn't learn how to use a bow until the bounding demon bit. Didn't learn how to equip sorcerers until the final boss (had to use Flash Sweat to help stay alive). Didn't find out how to upgrade past +5 til after the Anor Londo. I left the Goldilocks knight alive so I never got his cool ring.

Ended up at SL 83 with like 45 str / 45 stam and some other misc stats.

The struggles (deaths) - ~10 at Capra Demon (these things were a joke later but fuck that tiny room). - ~30 Blight town obviously those little blowdart tickets, other than that it honestly wasn't that bad - ~30 Anor Londo Archers on the Buttress. This absolute shit nearly broke me - ~20 Ornstein and Smough. The real problem I had here was I wanted to summon Solair, but the PvP is so active here I couldn't get to the summon sign without being killed. So I just ended up doing it hollow, and obviously killed fatty last. - Thanks for warning me about the amazing chest - ~20 at Seath. For some stupid reason I spent way too long cutting his tail, even though I had 0 point in intellect (I used 2 hand most the time and thought it might be good)

From there it was mostly cruise control, I guess I got OK at the game by this time. I actually 1 shot four king but I admit I cheated and read the poise + go berserk and heal in between guide because I had read anecdotal accounts that's these guys can be a nightmare to deal with.

Finally, for the Lord of Cinders "supposedly" one of the easiest bosses in the game, I died like 30 fucking times. I went through the entire game without parrying. My usually strategy for everything else in the game was to bait an attack, roll or block and do a quick slash or leaping heavy attack. Obviously this wasn't going to fly here, so I had to learn how to parry from scratch. The pre-boss run was a bit soul destroying, but eventually I got that sweet dopamine.

What a great game! I feel proud of myself because people have always referred to this game as like the Davinchi of video games, and I was always ashamed of myself for sucking at it. Now I am so proud that I can say I've won! I'm no god at it, for absolute sure I am probably garbage. But in the end I found persistance to be key.

This game should be recommended as a therapy for people with anger management issues, it's so fucking frustrating but you need to Keep Calm and Carry On ™. Although I really had my moments, my god those archers...

Finally I end this with a question and ask for a rccomendation. I have found I have developed an itch that needs to be scratched:

I want to another playthrough with perhaps magic next time, but Bloodborne looks interesting. Then there's the sequels which look very tempting too. NG+ doesn't seem that interesting since it will be the same character. I never did the DLC either

What do you lot think I should do next?

Thanks for reading my crappy story. Not many games inspire such a reflection on the experience, surely it is a testament to it's masterpiece.

    All achievements?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 02:12 AM PST

So, i have all the achievements for ds3 and i am very proud of that. It was a fun project even though it took an eternity. I am crazy enough to consider doing the same for ds1and i want to ask the people who have already done this; which achievements will be the hardest/take the longest? How long did it take you? Started playing DS1 about 3 months ago...

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 07:10 PM PST

... and yesterday I finally managed to beat the bane of my greed in DS3, Midir. :D

Hi everyone, this is my very first post in all of reddit, and only a wonderful thing like Dark Souls could make me do it. I am posting my story here because, as a grown man with absolutely 0 friends to talk about geek stuff like this, Its hard to keep these thoughts to yourself. I think many of you understand this, for sure. :)

So, about 3 months ago, I decided to try DS1 Remastered. Since then I've spent hundreds of hours in this series, finishing all Dark Souls games, with only the 2 last DLCs for DS2 on my to-do list (Fume Knight, man... that dude has no respect for my quality build). I'm part-timing a job and with that comes a lot of free time, so that's my reason for being able to finish them, since I am not a gamer at all, just like some games a LOT and will put the time into them.

But even with all that time and "determination", I am honestly surprised that I was able to do this. When I look back at how I started, its mindblowing even.

My first 2 hours in the Undead Asylum back in DS1 were absolute pain and failure. Pain, failure, repeat. That Demon just trashed me time and time again, so I decided to just google if there was something I was missing/doing all wrong with my mindset/playstyle, which was that of a Skyrim/Witcher dude, i.e. casul as they come.

I read that I could cheese the guy with Firebombs, so I went and did it only for the sake of passing the tutorial, and see if the game was for me, or not. Felt a bit shi++y, but I could move on and check the game, at least.

    Undead Burg here I come.

I can't tell you how many hours were lost going from the Firelink bonfire until I found Taurus, but I died a lot from hollows gangin' up, gravity and greedness that I soon learned to control. And when I first saw and tried to fight a Black Knight I knew I was waaay out of my comfort zone.

This game was trying to tell me I was not worthy of even meeting the first proper boss.

Out of sheer geek determination, I endured (the lore was too appealing...) and when I first met said boss, I noticed something. The ladder. I had a lightball moment and decided to do what the tutorial taught me, jump and nail the basterd. I felt awesome when I killed the guy kinda easily and realised the game was not hard because of the stuff you encounter, but its much more of a "patience and attention" thing. I was starting to get this game, or so I thought.

All was wonderful, and with that victory, I felt I could try at least a bit more. I was starting to get hooked. I will never forget the first time in the Parish, seeing that boar and a bunch of skeletons waiting for me to drop and get killed. Some hours on that bit, too. Hearing the bells while I was struggling in the area, made me feel I wasn't alone in that struggle. Ringing my first bell was simply wonderful. Discovering the elevator to the Shrine was out of this world.

And then came the Capra Demon. The first "Boss Win High" I felt in the game. Unlike anything I experienced until that point, as a gamer. Beating that dude made me think I could do anything in this game. I now know how stupid and wrong I was, but after 20+ tries, I thought I had learned how to play and stay calm.

So, happy me goes to Blighttown (after an unforgettable and LOOOOOONG first tour of the Depths, which genuinely scared the crap out of me since I'm playing with headphones in the dark), manages to beat Spider sis and after meeting Frampt, i'm off to Sen's. Golem is a pita at first but after learning to not lock, very easy boss.

And so I arrive in Anor Londo ( first time getting shot by one of those arrows sending me flying to yet another death literally made me LOL). And that was my house for days and days. When I first fought O&S I was completely underpowered, and had to look at my stats and decide what weapons I coud use more efectively. Around this time I was a Quality build that used a lightning man-serpent GS. Yeah, I was casul for real.

I went for 3 or 4 days of the following: start at the bonfire, dodge those two Silver Knights, run, drop, avoid Sentinels and a**hole archer, enter fog gate, die, repeat.

At one point, despair led me to accept I wasn't going to do this fight solo, so I went and tried to summon Solaire for help. I was online. Some dude invaded and wrecked me 3 or 4 times in a row while trying to summon Sunbro. Turned the game offline for this bit, and with that, I STUPIDLY thought, no NPCs available to help.

So I accepted my fate, and decided to do this by my own means. Grabbed the Claymore, and just tried and tried for days. I was leveling sometimes, but these dudes simply destroyed me in secs, no matter the number of my health points. I had to "git gud" or go home.

And when it happended, when I finally beat them solo, I was "gud" enough to have Estus to spare. I was circling around these fools and knowing what to do, hard as it was to imagine at first. Felt like a part-time job, but I will never forget the moment I saw Hyper Smough go down. When I met Miss Big Chest my hands were trembling, heart racing and I swear - a tear almost made it, probably of relief. I was definitely in love with this game. Hard.

Ornstein & Smough, thanks. And to the dude who made me go solo, thanks too, I guess.

The game was a lot easier from that point on (with the obvious exception being the AotA DLC), and when I finished it, I immediately started both NG+ and a new char.

But some days passed and I decided to try the other 2, got myself the trilogy edition and arrived in Drangleic ready to kick a** and take names.

That game lasted forever, and compared to the other 2, there's not as much "memorable" stuff. And weirdly, I was offing bosses at first try, which did not feel very Dark Souls to me. Others were a pain, but sometimes in the wrong way, like the Twin Dragonriders or Nashandra, imo. Did love the Pursuer, Last Sinner and Smelter Demon fights, those were great fun and challenging without being "just hard/borderline unfair".

Still, great stuff in DS2, just did not grabbed me as the other 2 games did.

And so, last week I finished DS3. Phenomenal environments, great story and GREAT boss fights and NPCs. DS3 is probably the most polished game of the 3, although I prefer DS1 any day, mostly because of being my first and the memories I already created, but what a send off to the series. The DLC bosses were sometimes insanely difficult for a filthy casul like me, with the Demons (could not solo them as a melee guy, had to summon Gael and Flapp) Midir and Friede being 2 of the toughest ones in the whole series (I LOVED the Gael fight so much I can't really call it hard, HARD. It's just superfun and so fast that I never got frustrated or "depressed" like with the Dragon and the Nun).

Now, its off for a few weeks and then it's Fume Knight time. Wish me luck.

I am in love with this series. Completely and utterly. I might even buy a PS4 just for BB and the upcoming Demon's Souls remake that I heard of.

But mostly, I am waiting for Elden Ring. Can't. Wait.

Thanks for reading, everyone, and excuse my occasional slip, since English is not my first language.

What the fuck is this game’s problem with backstabbing

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 04:15 PM PST

Everyone I invade just walks up to me and I suddenly get backstabbed when the host was right in front of me was just in front of me, but when the host is right in front of me, with his back turned to me, recovering from an R2, I can't backstab him

    Need some advice

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 01:47 AM PST

Just on my first playthrough and have some questions about the game. For info, I mostly 2hand a +5 Halberd or +2 Black Knight Sword. I'm soul level 35 and I've just beat both gargoyles in Anor Londo after your first time inside the cathedral

    1. How do heavy armour builds work? I have currently got Catarina set on but still seem to die quite quickly. Even when rolling etc due to the weight I still take hits
    2. Is it possible to improve swing speed? Love both the weapons I use but feel like I get beat to the attack a lot
    3. Should I remain in Anor Londo or go back and farm souls? I'm currently struggling to beat the 3 flying things that do shock damage (after you proceed up the stairs and kill the 2 sentinels)

    Trying not to hollow!

    I did it!

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 09:56 PM PST

After a week of planning, dying, and backtracking, I finally did it: I beat O&S solo!

My original plan was to increase my strength to 50 so I can wield the Dragons Tooth and Havels Greatshield. But after some time, I made a new plan.

My new plan was to used the Silver Knight Str. Sword and the Giant Shield, and upgrade max out their upgrades. Although my gear weren't fully max out, I decided to put it to the test to see if would actually work. And it did.

Smough went down quickly, and I dealt a little bit of damage to Ornstein. I was shocked on how well my plan worked, so I kept going with it.

I went through with my plan and decided to fight them. I defeated Smough first, then died at phase two by enraged Pikachu. Then I went back in, killed Ornstein this time, then went after Smough. I put him at low health, and he put me at very low health with two estus flask remaining. I thought to my self this is it, don't mess this up. I used one of the estus flask, then dodged the rest of his attacks, and attacked from behind. That did the tricked.

You would not believe how ecstatic and loud I was when I emerged victorious. My brother heard me and said that I sounded like M. Bison saying yes. Damn that put me in a very good mood.

    Finally Beat Artorias (First Post)

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 05:30 PM PST

He was so difficult, using Silver Knight Chest (+5) Legs (+5), Arms (+5), Silver Knight Shield (+5), and Man Serpent Greatsword (+14), Havel and Wolf Rings, I died over 20 times. But once I just said "Fuck it", and used nothing but my Silver Knight Shield, Mask of the mother (unupgraded), and a +5 Silver Knight Spear, I beat him first try. My set that has never failed, failed this one time, and being naked with a metal stick did the trick. I don't get it, but I'm super relieved right now.

    Shoutouts to the Sanctuary Invader

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 04:02 PM PST

I would like to thank user UwU from DS Switch. I had been exposing myself to the Sanctuary Guardian, trying to gain a feel for its attacks. It's a very aggressive boss, and I'm using lightning bonewheel. While doing the old Seig thought process, I left a sign to maybe help other players while learning more strategies. I helped the lovely and enigmatic Tacocat, and the battle was completely different when the boss had two players to focus on. Reminded me of my old Monster Hunter days.

This made me decide to wait for someone to put up their own sign to help me in turn, so I used my humanity and waited. After a while of sketching on the desk, the ambience cut out, never a good sign. I went back to the TV and saw UwU popping out with a goddamn sack head right in front of me. How is that even allowed, the whole area is a hamster tube. Immediately I panic and run for the boss alone.

And then I killed the thing.

Turns out having humanity played a huge role in my longevity, I used several more during healing opportunities and set about dancing with the flow until it died. Thank you UwU, thank you for destroying any ounce of fear I held in my solar-plexus.

Word out to the sons and daughters of sunlight and chaos, help the poor saps with the guardian.

Going Hollow trying to fight Manus

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 10:42 PM PST

I'm really struggling fighting Manus as the title implies. I summon Sif for help yet I see as Sif attacks, he does no damage at all? I'm also getting smacked when I roll away (probably bad timing or I just don't know the hitbox very well). I know there's a way to hit Manus before the fight but I really don't want to do it that way, it's also difficult for me to find the right angle even if I wanted to do it that way.

Does anyone have any advice? I'm fast rolling, using the Black Knight Sword at +5 and the Grass Crest Shield +10 if any of that matters.

Building a Caster for 100% need some help and suggestions

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 10:37 PM PST

I'm just about done at the game on my main character, which is a str/dex build. I decided that I wanted to get all the achievements, but I didn't cut Seath's tail. I've heard that making a Caster makes the game 100% easier, and since I just want to do a quick run through the game for the Knight's Honor achievement a Caster seems to be the best choice. I found this guide that seems pretty good, but I was wondering if there was anything you guys would do different? I'm completely new to a magic build

I'm playing as a mage and I've got Logan's catalyst, dusk crown, and bellowing dragon crescent and boyyy these things are working miracles. I also picked up Moonlight GS and I've been loving it. This is my first run of DSR and I can't believe my journey is almost at its end. I'm going to level up one last time and then I'll be off to fight Gwyn. Wish me luck, gentlemen
