    +15 Zweihander is no joke

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 04:06 PM PST

Just slayed Artorias on my first attempt. Loving the dlc so far I unfortunately missed it on my first playthrough, so I made a new character and decided to power up the bass cannon. I think the fact that i played DS3 first has helped tremendously but of course I had to play the first game because it is an absolute classic after all

    24hr Dark Souls Marathon

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 04:37 AM PST

    Hi all,

Before I start, this post has been approved and veryfied by admins; thought I would clear that up before proceeding :D

This Saturday 15th I will be doing a 24hr marathon in Dark Souls (whole thing streamed on Twitch) as a part of Game Changer Challenge for Cancer Research UK which is a charity that tries to find a cure for this awful illness. I have set up a Just Giving page for this challenge, link to which is provided below.

Just Giving - Cancer Research Uk

Since this is my first time playing Dark Souls I would like to ask you, distinguished players for your support. Either if it's a share, donation or just an advice on the game, any kind of help would be hugely appreciated as it is all for a good cause and I won't see a dime out of the money donated. I would love to get as big reach as possible to raise awareness.

Please see below a link to my Twitch Channel where I will do the stream (you can have a laugh watching me trying not to die), starting from tomorrow noon. If any of ya could pop in, leave a tip or just drop a message that would also be awesome as I'm gonna die... A lot. I have finished Bloodborne tho, so shouldn't be too bad 😂😂

    Cancerathon Twitch

Thanks for you attention and please wish me luck 😁

I've seen bullshit deaths but come on.

Good god I actually did it! A seemingly unconventional experience from a grown-up, casual gamer...

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 07:33 AM PST

I grew up playing some fairly tough NES/SNES games, but as life began to take up more of my time, I became very much a casual gamer, mostly enjoying games where you enjoy god-like power and amazing special effects like the Devil May Cry series, Bayonetta, God of War, and most recently Horizon Zero Dawn. Most of those games were played on easy/story modes, as I didn't feel I had the time nor the desire to die often when I really wanted to see how cool the latest special effects/giant boss battles were.

DSR's reputation put me off of it for a long time, but it went on sale on Switch so I took the plunge. It took a few tries for it to click, as Asylum Demon seemed like an impossible task and my little dude seemed kinda clunky compared to the games I was used to.

Then, one day, boy did it ever click! What actually did it was how unclunky my dude got after taking off all his armor. I suddenly didn't care that it took me 15-20 tries to get past some skeletons and a couple rats. I got addicted to the incremental improvement, and the fact that for the first time in decades, I was memorizing level layouts.

I read enough of this reddit to know I should play as blind as possible, but I couldn't resist staying subscribed and reading while at work, so I was exposed to certain general themes like O&S and Blighttown being terrible (in a good, DS way) affairs.

I gotta say, I had what seems like a bit of an unconventional experience (I think I was mostly a dex build? shadow armor, drake sword, then balder/silver knight sword for most of the game, legit never figured out how to even use magic/spells).

Spoilers ahead: Blighttown and Tomb of Giants weren't too bad for me, but I was stuck on the Anor Londo archers for a while. Sen's Fortress was a blast, but New Londo Ruins was awful - I hated the feeling that, based on the curse items, I only had a limited # of attempts before I had to farm souls and buy more curse items. Same thing with those fucking frogs in the depths that curse you - I guess in general, I dreaded things that threatened the farming of souls to undo or to progress.

Bed of Chaos was a huge letdown once I figured out what to do... like, that was it? On the other hand, Gwyn killed me well over 100 times because everyone jokes about parrying him, and I was terrible at timing him. Once I went back to sticking and moving like I did most of the game, I beat him within five attempts.

The one time I truly got stuck and had to resort to a guide was after I had defeated all of the major bosses except for Seath. I spent a good eight hours trying to figure out where to go next - I don't think I ever would have figured out to go back to Anor London and just go to the left.

Now I'm on NG+, starting a pure sorcery build, and also just started DS2 on my PS4. I am 100% into all of these games now! Thanks to everyone in this community - everyone being supportive made me never want to give up. Also, because Gwyn kicked my ass so many times, I have something like 90 titanite chunks and almost as many red titanites along with a metric fuck ton of black knight weapons, if anyone could use them.

Praise the sun! (Apologies for killing Solaire - accidentally hit him in Izalith, didn't want to go all the way to the church to get uncursed or whatever, the guy wouldn't stop following me...)

Finally finished this game. An actual masterpiece. [mild spoilers]

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 09:02 PM PST

Coming from Bloodborne (my all time favourite game), I played DS3 and as fun as it was, it took me 31 hours, and after I had finished the game it had never actually stayed with me at all. Which put me down for what DS1 might be.

So I buy the remaster and oh dear god, this game is phenomenal. It's definitely an older game- especially in the quality of life areas, but this game has given me some of the highest of highs I've had playing a game- and also some of the lowest of lows.

Everything from the crazy undead at Firelink, to Solaire's questline, even to Lautrec and Dusk, every side character in this game has left an impact and after I had finished, while.the stunning credits music was playing, I couldn't help but feel such a deep melancholy over all of them and how they would carry on.

Everything about this game is phenomenal. Had I not played Bloodborne previous to this, I can see why if this was your first From game, that it would revolutionalize gaming for you.

Though, even having played Bloodborne- I still can't get this game out of my head, I only played it 2 hours longer than DS3 (33hours total) but I genuinely feel like I've spent months with it- and it's an experience I'll never forget.

Let's talk about fear of the Hydra.

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 03:33 AM PST

I love Dark Souls. I've beaten #3 already, including the Smoldering Lake worm, and giant monsters have never really bugged me.

But holy Jesus Christ, when I first saw the Hydra, even from far away, it invoked some kind of dreadful primal fear in me and I had to leave. It scared the shit out of me so bad that I'm not sure if any horror game has actually accomplished the same feat yet which is honestly super embarrassing for me because it looks like something I'd usually love to battle but I have no idea what makes it scary to me.

Very little things have actually scared me in the bloodsouls series (besides the ceiling spiders in Bloodborne but nowhere near this extent) and I'll need to kill it for the DLC so I'll just watch a bunch of videos on people close to it and eventually try and get close to kill it myself.

So does the Hydra scare anyone else or is it just some some random-ass irrational fear of mine? Are there more Hydras later?

What is it that makes this game so immersive for you?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 12:51 PM PST

What is it that makes this game feel so much more real than almost any other? For me it would have to be the lack of an omnipresent voice telling me where to go that so many other games have

I need you dark souls fans help for a Valentine’s Day card idea.

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 01:18 PM PST

I painted a card for my partner of Solaire sitting at a bonfire with my partner's character in DS. The main words of the card is Solaire's dialogue:

"The way I see it, our fates appear to be intertwined. In a land brimming with Hollows, could that really be mere chance? So, what do you say? Why not help one another on this lonely journey?"

Does this work? I know Solaire's story is sad but I really like this dialogue. Is it too cheesy. Please help!!

    Dark Souls remastered

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 03:29 AM PST

So...i have this big question in my head, i want to buy DS Remastered, i want to feel the emotion of being invaded or making pvp duels, i play on xbox plataform but is the online really active? Does it worth it? Or should i stay with the "prepare to die" edition???

When do YOU, go into the painted world? And what order do you do the Lord Souls?

    Ironic

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 01:28 PM PST

So on one playthrough I came across a summon sign from a Paladin Leeroy cosplayer in the undead parish, I had beaten the undead parish many times so, having nothing to prove, I summoned Leeroy and someone else and took on the bell gargoyles.

A couple of days ago, I was doing PvP in the Darkroot Forest (deeper part of the forest) on a NG+ character. And what are the odds that I would be invaded by the dark (red, not forest hunter) phantom Paladin Leeroy.

So in other words, I had an identical pair of encounters with a cosplayer of Leeroy as with the actual Leeroy: Having him be a helpful phantom, but then an invader coming for my humanity.

That one moment that made you go "Holy fucking shit, I've never played anything like this before." What was it for you?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 12:41 PM PST

I think it's fair to say that looping back to Firelink Shrine was one of those "eye-opening" things for the majority of people, including myself.

However, what really got me when I first played the game was wandering around Darkroot Garden, without any kind of goal in mind, just exploring.. Finally when I thought that I've seen everything. I went down where those crystal giants are, and seeing something huge moving in distance, but not being able to quite make out what it is, because of the trees, branches and fog. Just standing there and really trying to see wtf is that thing, but at the same time not wanting to go down there because of " I have 1k souls, and I really need them." type of fear lol.

I've played DS not long after release, and I still remember that moment.

Also, this applies to all soulsborne-sekiro games, and not only DS. So what was it for you?

Is this the most open world FromSoftware game?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 09:55 PM PST

I searched a bit online and people claim that the order from open world to linear is something like this:

    Demon's Souls and Dark Souls

    Dark Souls 2 and Bloodborne

    Dark Souls 3

    Sekiro

    Is this true?

I'm not a fan of open world games (especially from Japanese studios). I really liked Bloodborne and this game clearly isn't as polished (which is understandable). I don't know if it's because of blocking but so far I find it way more easier than Bloodborne and I killed most bosses fairly easy, some from the first try. So far, in my book, its difficulty is compared to Lords of the Fallen (maybe even a bit easier), which is not a bad thing. Anyway, just killed the boss in Blighttown and I'm not sure weather I'm gonna continue the game since it's too open world for my taste. The whole game is a maze with too many stuff to do and available places to go at once. Unlike Bloodborne, its illusory walls make no sense, give you no hints or traces and they are all over the game with whole new areas behind them. The map/area design admittedly is blending nice together, just too overwhelming for me.

    Summoning help?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 05:24 AM PST

    Hi all

    Newbie here

    How does summoning work?

I've gotten to soul level 60 and was wanting to grind for more souls, was wondering if allowing myself to be summoned to help is worthwhile in terms of rewards?

My character feels pretty OP at the moment so I think I'd be able to handle pretty much any boss up to Ornstein and Smough

    Are the rewards worth it?

An Entire Written Timeline of the Preface to Dark Souls I

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 11:15 AM PST

So I began my trek through Dark Souls around 2 weeks ago and I instantly became hooked on how the story was portrayed. I began with Dark Souls 3 and had no idea what was going on but it was a fun game nonetheless. I wanted to learn more about this universe but it felt so hidden behind item descriptions, characters, and theorization.

This is a project of mine that goes over the entirety of Dark Souls preface put as simply as I could and answering the questions that I had in the beginning. If you are just starting to get into the lore, there is no way that you will understand this on the first read. Be patient and understand that this is complicated. It is a little all over the place since multiple things were happening at once and you can't explain one thing without another.

For the experts on the lore, I am only a beginner so let me know what is wrong and what I can fix. This is only the prologue to the Dark Souls universe so let me know if you would like me to go through each of the games in this format. It may have a few errors since it's a lot to proofread but enjoy.

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/11dP6pi7OAFWrxG-_DBMQ_qkMblwxn4iIK-ghjDgjd9M/edit?usp=sharing

(This was re-posted as a link to my document because the formatting in Reddit screwed up a lot of stuff)

EDIT: I love that people don't think that I'm a beginner and when taking a step back it does seems a little odd for someone who started the game 2 weeks ago to have fully beaten the game and fully comprehended the lore. Maybe it was 3 weeks ago ok but still I don't have a life either way.

EDIT 2: Recently updated my document fixing a couple errors I made.
