Imo Dark Souls is the Game of the Decade

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:43 AM PST

Aside from the amazing amount of influence it had on the genre (which was nothing short of game-changing), as a game there are just so many great mechanics, and it did things extremely well at the START of the decade that is rare to find even in games today.

There's a lot to discuss with this game but one thing I really appreciate about it is the top-tier world design. No minimap to detract from the experience or tell you how to go from point A to B, I bet most who've played this game can probably draw out the DS areas and how they connect from memory. The game is designed to guide you without the heavy-handed fingerpointing, which is EXTREMELY hard and rare to do in a game; nowadays it's just 'create the world, create the quests, then have a minimap tell you where to go and how to get there".

Aside from the technicalities, the actual world itself is intriguing and has a natural flow to it. You go higher and higher, through burgs and cathedrals, eventually making your way up to the highest point for the first bell, then go up even further until you reach Anor Londo, the literal (and once actual) peak in all of DS. And then you go lower and lower, through a dark valley of drakes, through a forgotten toxic town, until you're in the chaotic mess of Lost Izalith in a hellish landscape deep underground. It's not without its flaws of course, but the progression is so organic and it makes for an immersive experience.

The actual gameplay also feels purposeful and has weight to it. Combat is simple yet diverse, and I think even among the other Souls games, it's the best combat. Some might consider it clunky, but I believe it disallows for hack-and-slash gameplay and made you think about your moves and analyze enemies more carefully before risking a hit. The more cautious style made you feel 1) the bosses you fought were real threats and every move counted and 2) shit was tense af all the way through.

It's one of the few games I play that I play 100% just for the gameplay. I love this game. I could go on more about the enemy diversity, cool-as-balls DLC, etc but I'm at work and just wanted to get this out.

    I did it

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 09:59 PM PST

I bought myself dark souls remastered and it was my first ever souls game, I played every day for 3 weeks and after lots of rage and happy moments I kindled my last flame. I was so overcome with emotion I started crying and I can honestly say this is my favorite game franchise now. Thank you Dark Souls

    SL1 so far

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 03:41 AM PST

Been playing Souls games since Demon's came out, on and off. Thought I'd try a SL1 run., as I love these games but I'm not great at them.

Was really surprised to get to Blighttown without a single death, including taking out:

Asylum demon, Taurus demon, Bell Gargoyle, Capra demon, Gaping Dragon, Moonlight Butterly, Stray Demon

Then died due to gravity in Blighttown, and will probably die 100s of times now. But it was a good run for me!

Started playing for the first time, screw Capra Demon

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 04:43 AM PST

This fight just feels so unfair because of the cramped space and the damn dogs, most the time I can't last more than 5 seconds because the dogs block my dodges and corner me. Are any other bosses in the game this badly designed? :/

Finally learned the tragic story of puppy Sif

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 06:25 PM PST

I've been a long time fan of the souls games ever since I played dark souls 1 way back when it first came out. Even back then I remember hearing people talk about how hard it was for them to kill Sif, which I always assumed was just because he was a dog, since I didn't know about his questline. I somehow missed puppy Sif every time I did a playthrough, running past the humanity sprites and just booking it to Manus.

Fast forward to present day. I was watching a video called "project dark souls" (a timeline of the souls games), and was totally surprised when they covered Sif's lore, and showed a clip of the "special" cutscene you get from doing his quest. Naturally, I had to find out more.

And thus began another dark souls playthrough. I just want to say I totally understand why this fight is so heartbreaking now, it hurt my heart to have to put him down. The fight is so much more powerful once you know the pups story.

It honestly amazes me that I somehow missed this, and that I'm still learning new things about a game I've had for almost a decade.

Thanks for reading, rest in peace Sif.

    boneheaded mistake

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 10:26 PM PST

So, I go to the depths and free the pyromancer, run back to firelink to get pyromancy, and promptly poke him with my spear without thinking ( I completely brainfarted), dude chases me all over firelink, and attacks me with melee on the stairs leading to undead burg, misses, and falls to his death.

Please, my hollow friends, tell me I am not the only one to do this.

First time playing a Dark Souls game, killed Ornstein and Smough second try lol

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 01:30 AM PST

Yes a brag post but I'm genuinely surprised.

I died several times on easy boss like the taurus or queen spider, and yet I managed to kill O and S easily..

Im a dex build (katana), level 60, is that too high level ?

I just ran all over the place and hit Ornstein a few time before running away, rinse and repeat. Then, when it's only fatty, I just charge him, dodge his slow attack and hit him three times and retreat, rinse and repeat.

I died like twenty time trying to kill the first Knight Archer and lightning harpies before than..

    Weird game

Lore/story guide for someone halfway through the game

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:47 AM PST

    Hi everyone!

This is my first post on Reddit, so hope i'm not breaking any rules by posting something already on here that I failed to find.

I reckon I am roughly halfway through DS1 Remastered, which is my first From Software title, and have quickly become obsessed with the game.

One thing I do regret is that I am just now becoming accustomed to DS's unique way of storytelling, which seems mostly to be through item descriptions. I did not really pay that much attention to item descriptions so far and feel I have missed out on the story.

I would like to somehow catch up with what lore has been available so far without spoiling the rest of the game for myself. Unfortunately, by now, my inventory has become a rather untidy mess and I have little to no recollection as to which item I picked where/when.

I guess my question is, is there a lore or story guide which lays out the story area by area, without spoiling the later sections? I was told I should not be expecting too much in terms of a coherent and complete narrative on the events of the game, but would like to appreciate whatever lore is available for the rest of my playthrough.

    DS4 issue.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:42 AM PST

So I'm not sure where to post this and I know it's been posted before but it seems nothing I do works, so my controller spins when I'm in game I've tried ds4 and steam settings, with ds4 no matter what I can't get exclusive mode working, I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting in game disabling enabling the driver turned off explorer.exe, enabling ds4 config on steam and all my controller is fine on my ps4 but no matter what controller (ps4) I've used I couldn't play sekiro when it came out or dark souls since I've had it since o can't deal with the camera on keyboard, just looking for something that even just makes the spinning stop as other buttons are also not synced properly no matter what I do (x is b) and so on, sorry for terrible formatting I'm just frustrated as I've finally decided I want to deal with this issue lol

I cant believe i did it

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 12:50 PM PST

I bought Dark Souls years ago but never played it and when i tried the game months ago i was stuck in Blight Town and actually quit the game. With 2020 though i gave myself a "gamer resolution", a challange: to finish a Souls game just to say i did it. So i came here and asked for assistance since it been a while and i didint know what to do. Thanks to this subreddit/community i got the help i needed and continued my journey in blight town. It was horrible lmao i hated it. My weapon was broken and i was cursed. But i didint want to quit so soon so i kept on and suddenly i realized i was actually having fun. Literally i couldnt stop playing for 2 days straight. After billion deaths over all i finally killed Gwyn and it feels amazing.

    My thoughts about the game:

Easiest Bosses: There are many, especially the most end game bosses were much easier than starter bosses(Iron Golem,Bed of Chaos comes to my mind atm.)

    Hardest Bosses: Ornstein&Smough,Quelagg, Capra Demon

Best Zone: Anor Londo (both visual and design was its my favorite. DS is all dark&greythe change was great)

Worst Zone: Tomb of Giants (i had to check step by step Youtube guide to get the lantern thing, Divine mechanic was cool though)

    Rant:

    - Camera was bad especially when groups of enemies close on you

    - Which genius though that putting roll and sprint and jump on the same button would be a great idea

    - Story telling was really bad. Its a shame because its really interesting. I will check youtube videos for that.

    - There is something with controls that not quite right. Abilities can be qued or registered delayed.

Over all i am glad i forced myself to finish the game at the beginning. I will play DS3 next with Bloodborne following. After that probably Sekiro

I thank again to everyone who responded to my plea :P

Playing Through Dark Souls for the 1st Time

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 04:37 PM PST

First From game was Bloodborne, beat it multiple times (dlc included) and loved it. Recently platinumed Sekiro and beat Nioh (including dlc). So going to the slower combat of DS is quite the whiplash. Loving it though! About to go fight the gargoyles and so far I think I'm getting the feel for the combat. Can't decide if I want to do dex or str run, as I currently am using a +3 Uchigatana and a Drake Sword. Either way I go I know I'll have a blast

Watching someone else play for the first time, what was your favorite moment?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 08:00 AM PST

Recently got my brother in law into the series, and he is absolutely entranced (DSR on Switch). This is probably the closest I will ever get to feeling what I did on my own first playthrough.

Favorite moment thus far was when he reached the Asylum Demon and stood on the ledge wondering what to do, and then it jumping up and one shotting him. Exact same thing happened to me years ago, and that was when I first realized how brutal the game was gonna be.

    What is yours?

    Anyone still on PS3?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:45 AM PST

Hey everyone, thanks for reading. Just wondering what the count of fellow undead is for the PS3. I've got Prepare to Cry edition, who else is still playing? I do currently need some help with Black Dragon Kalameet if anyone is around lvl 189 and feels like helping. I've been a long time veteran of the souls series, but I didn't own the DLC for DS1 until fairly recently, so this is my first time fighting Black Dragon Kalameet. Ok to be fair I've fought him 7 times but I'd like assistance in getting his tail chopped off. I was once given the Obsidian Greatsword many years ago and fell in love with it. Since then I've lost all data and had to restart, so here I am. My Playstation 3 username is Bannehazamel, I'm on the west coast and it's currently 12:44. I'm eager to meet any and all of you who would care to indulge in some jolly cooperation. Thank you for your time and efforts. Don't you dare go Hollow on me.

Controversial Topic about the starter classes

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:02 AM PST

If there's one thing i hate other than Blighttown, Bed of Chaos and the other normal-hated things, its the guides on starter classes.

They all go the same thing: TAKE THE PYROMANCER WITH MASTER KEY.

Master key. On the first. Fucking. Playthrough.

On my first playthrough i went to blighttown instead of undead burg because i thought the master key would lead you to good places. Big fucking mistake.

Also: we all know that for the most consistently useful class is pyromancer and its great. But it gets so generic to see the layout. If i had a dime for everytime someone goes Pyro-MasterKey, i'd have enough to buy myself a third copy of the game.

    Just my opinion,

    disclaimer; i started as knight.

    Slowest weapon in the game?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 05:35 PM PST

Yeah, got this great idea of doing a playthrough with some extremely slow weapon. I've played with Great Club and Grant. Is there anything more sluggish than that, or did I accidentaly finish the "challenge" already?

Best FROM software title of the decade

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:25 PM PST

I know people may get tired of this question, but I feel that there is no better time to discuss. I'll go ahead and rate from bottom to top.

Edit: my formatting is getting flipped. DS3 is 5 and BB is 1

    1. Dark souls 3: It wrapped of the series well and had many strong points including visceral combat with some of the best boss fights in the series. Enemies had more personality and varied attacks similar to bloodborne. However, its similarity to bloodborne comes at the cost of having the most unoriginal combat of the series. All other games had highly characteristic combat systems while DS3 felt pretty much like bloodborne. Another con for me was the fan service. WAY too many DS1 references, enemies, areas, and reused content. I get that they are in the same universe but there was no need to revisit he painted world or anor londo. Also many of the areas drew heavily from DS1 levels (Catatombs of carthus, demon ruins, archdragon peak). Still a highly enjoyable game but in retrospect takes last place for me.

    2. Dark souls 2: It hurts to put DS2 so low on the list as it is one of my most beloved and nostalgic games, but there were too many flaws to justify. But let's start out with the good. It was no doubt the most RPG-like souls game. The amount of consumables (while somewhat uselss), armour and weapon variety, and NPC interactions made it feel like you were truly on a journey without rest. Also the DLCs and endgame levels are among the greatest soulsborne content imo. The combat system is also very singular. The way your character feels and reacts to your input is very unique and you must play with slow and confident decisiveness. Cons are that the beginning levels lack originality and are kind of a slog. Many of the boss fights are incredibly easy and uninspired. The lore also seems a bit out of place in the universe, and it cannot actually exist in the universe canonically (see Redgrave's youtube video "DS3 general lore discussion"). I do feel that this game feels more complete and satisfying than the other souls games especially if you include the god blessed DLCs holy fuck they're so good.

    3. Dark souls: I really cant say anything bad about this game. It's only in 3rd because I barely like sekiro more. So many ingenious breakthroughs in gaming right here. World design, combat, enemy behavior, lore procession, everything is so on point. By far the most memorable game of the series, and I think that is its strongest point. No other game has matched the originality of world and enemy design that this game offers. It also seems to have the most distinct art style (color hughes, bokeh, changes in atmosphere).

    4. Sekiro: I dont think I've enjoyed playing any game more. Just an absolute pleasure to play. This game made it to #2 literally mostly because it is incredibly fun and engaging. Its biggest boon is obviously the combat, which is incredibly satisfying to master. Fighting feels so fluid and precise, but completely the opposite when fighting an enemy for the first time. Its utterly frantic and horrifying, until you learn their attacks. Seriously it's the culmination of FROMs combat mechanics since day one, perfected, polished, and completely fair (except for chained orgre). Lore and level design was of the expected quality and I couldn't have asked for more there.

    5. Bloodborne: I think the primary reason BB is #1 for me is the atmosphere and lore. The artistic design of this game is completely stunning, deliberate, and consistent. Still today I stop in game and just marvel at the artistic qualities of the buildings, light points, and statues and graves lining every nook and cranny of the world. Most notably when you approach the hemwick charnel lane bonfire and look out on the gothic spires with dead tangled trees enveloping the sky, or when you approach the astral clocktower from afar and the camera backs up from the character as your blood soaked hunter gazes upon the blood-drunk sun. There are so many memorable scenes. Moments where you have to stop moving and just look at the world design. It also has a highly cohesive and equally repulsive, hidden storyline that shakes me just as Lovecraft's stories do. This mesh of perfect features give this game so much style. It is 100% the most singular and monolithic work of art in my world. The weapons and attire are fully integrated in the artistic style of the world and beyond that, are sick as ever living fuck. BB didnt really do things better than sekiro and souls. Honestly BB is very different from them in almost every way. It excels on it's own without influence from a precessor or sequel. The story, enemies, and characters definitely achieve the desired effect, to make the player feel as if they are stumbling upon one horrifying truth after another, each of which produces feelings of anguish and curiosity that leads you deeper and deeper into the nightmare.

(Spoilers!) What do you think I should do?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:17 PM PST

So it's my first time playing through darksouls, and I'm a level 69 strength build (27 vit 25 end and 40 str). I've been helping people fight Ornstein and smough through summoning and racked up 260k souls. I'm about to go fight the demon fire sage and I'm wondering if I should get more souls first so I can level up more before I fight him. Cause idk if I'll be able to help with O&S anymore once I level up that much.

    Miracle Only run

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 08:11 AM PST

Just finished my miracle only run for all bosses. A friend of mine said it takes way too long to get anything offensive for that and so I thought I give it a shot.

Figuring out the start for these caster only runs is the most fun part to me.

Had to do a little exception on the asylum demon. Killed him with firebombs, quit out before it said "victory", then he's not dead, Oscar gives you the key and you can leave while he is still alive. Other than that I used no items except my estus flask.

So i ran through undead burg, got to the Taurus demon. Tho I had no means to defeat the archers while I try to make him jump off. So I lured him on tower and he killed the archers for me, then I jumped down and he was nice enough to kill himself pretty much immediately.

Then I used the hellkite drake to farm enough souls to hit 25 fth to join the sunbros for the lightning spear, farmed gargoyles as sunbro to get the 2nd miracle and I was business. I also went to grab the gravelord dance, but only used it once.

From there it was easy. Just had to make sure to do capra demon, then pinwheel and save rhea to get wotg early and pick up emit force from siegmeyer. Of course also crown of dusk and suns firstborn ring.

The only bosses that were real trouble was big ornstein because of his high lightning resistance, so i had exactly 1 attack I could miss, the rest needed to hit. I didn't get emit force before that. (had to kill smough first cuz ornstein is harder to hit when he is small) and gwyn because of his relentless attacks with very little pause to heal and cast

    Overall a very fun run
