After ragequitting DS2 in my first playthrough, coming back to it years later to give it another try, finishing DS1, DS3, Bloodborne and Sekiro after it, I finally made the effort to become a dark soul. This game deserved to be played until I got (my first) platinum. It was a honor.

Dark Souls 2 story/lore is severely underrated

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 06:09 PM PST

Forget every other aspect, Dark Souls 2 story and lore is amazing. The story serves as a perfect middle between 1 and 3. It may not contain all the world building and creation of 1, or the wrapping up of 3. But it contains an amazing story that stands on its own.

I love how From Soft had a game to be able to breath and delve deep into what "life" is, away from the more standard Souls story of 1 and 3.

The story of Vendrick, Aldia, Nashandra and the Bearer of the curse is incredibly deep, as deep as any story can go. It's so ancient and mystical too, how Vendrick launched a war across the sea against giants. Only for them to level his kingdom after, all whilst being a plan by Nashandra. After all this the player can make their own choice (something DS3 rehashed). The last piece of dialogue from the game spoken by Aldia stands out

There is no path. Beyond the scope of light, beyond the reach of dark. ...what could possibly await us? And yet, we seek it, insatiably... Such is our fate

After getting back into the trilogy, with 1 being my all time favourite game by miles, I've obtained a new love for DS2's lore and Aldia has become my favourite character from the trilogy. Yet, I don't really come across much discussion about it in the community.

Edit: also, I can't stand when people say either: the games aren't connected or you can skip 2 as it's separate. If anything, 1 and 2 are the most linked. In 2 you discover that the linking and dying of the flame is a cyclical process over millenia, this is crucial to 3.

    The 39K Experience: part 13

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 11:56 AM PST

    Crown 3 acquired.

Ok, so it's been about seven months since my last one of these. I took a break and played some other things and builds for a while. No reason to get burned out.

Getting to Fume Knight wasn't really a problem. I was most of the way there anyway and had saved enough wedges to clear the idols around him. The fight itself was a pain, but I did it smart this time. I put on the Ring of Binding and ran suicide runs until I was confident I had the muscle memory down, then buffed up and took him down. Honestly, I sort of enjoy fighting Raime. He puts up a lot of pressure and you can't make many mistakes, but all his attacks are clearly telegraphed and paced. A clear tough but fair fight.

With him cleared, I decided to take on Alonne while I was at it. After running past the Prowlers for the bonfire, I decided to take my time and despawn the runup. I usually say it's not necessary, but I'm out of poison arrows and have a limited supply of lifegems, but I've got plenty of time and a really big stick to bonk 'em with. Alonne I handled the same way as Raime, and it went pretty much the same. Get owned until you know enough to win. I don't actually like Alonne's fight as much. He doesn't put as much pressure on you as Raime and has easier healing windows, but I swear he can just change the timing on his attacks whenever he feels like.

With Alonne down, I spent some time idol hunting through Brume Tower. The few I missed were in some tricky spots, and I had to do some suicide runs to get the soul fragments, but what do I care? It's not like I had any souls to lose. Maldron was a pain, of course, but that's what giant seeds are for. With Nadalia's Soul in hand, I could cash in my one free BOSS WEAPON with Ornifex for the Chime of Screams. Now, if you're familiar with that chime, you know it absolutely sucks, but when combined with Vendrick's Crown and Agdayne's Cuffs, it gives me just enough Faith to use a Priest Chime. Like the +8 version I picked up in Eleum Loyce. I don't have the souls to infuse or upgrade it more, but once I get some Sunlight Medals and a hell of a lot of spice, I'm going to be lightning chucking at 39K soul memory.

For my next goal, I've still got 2 frog knights to collect and Chaos to conquer before my crown hunt is finished.

I'm doing a sorceror/ tank build, cause i suck at dodging and blocking. I already have the needed stats for sunset staff, what would be the recommended set up for tank? Also, where's the best place to farm souls?

I have the base 1.0 ps3 version on disc, so sadly no dlc or added content for me atm. I finished heide's tower of flame and forest of fallen giants first visit

    Unsolicited Dark Souls 2 Takeaways

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 09:47 AM PST

I just beat DS2 for the first time and figured I would share my experience with the game and some of my takeaways.

TL:DR: very much enjoyed the game, but a lot of the bosses left something to be desired.

First, thank all of you who commented on my post when I started this game and who advised me on leveling up Adaptability. It made a huge difference and without it, I probably would have found this game to be far more frustrating.

Favorite boss: it would have been the Burnt King if the chard knights at the start of the fight weren't so obnoxious. Because of this, I think my favorite was the Fume Knight.

Least favorite: either Darklurker or the Squalid Queen. Darklurker required me to sink a lot of my later level ups into intelligence because for me it felt like it was going to be impossible just doing melee - especially given the barrier or entry (both the effigies and the terrible run up). Squalid Queen was the only boss that I needed to summon on and it actually required me summoning both NPCs.

Other comments about bosses: overall, I like the number of boss fights in this game. It is a very large game and I don't feel like it simply scaled the number of bosses linearly with the number of hours - I feel they truly increased the boss density. By biggest gripe about the bosses is that the vast majority are closer to Pinwheel than Pontiff in terms of difficulty and design. Many of the bosses are easier than standard enemy interactions which left some things to be desired. Also, Nashandra was by far the easiest final boss out of any FromSoft games that I've played (DS1, DS3, BB, and Sekiro). I figured out her gimmick after my first death and then went into the fight a second time without being hit or cursed. It mirrors Gwyn a little in that regard , but Gwyn's easy mode was reliant on some mechanical skill.

Least favorite area by far was Shrine of Amana only because of the Michael Jackson sounding LARP'ers and their intercontinental ballistic missiles - seriously though, why do they sound like MJ when you kill them? Visually though, it was probably my favorite. Second least favorite (though it is totally my fault) was the run up to Orenstein. I beat the dragon rider and aggro'd all if the Heide knights before heading up to Orenstein which made it a huge pain in the ass.

Favorite area was probably Old Chaos or the Dragon aerie. Thematically I think these areas nailed it.

Overall, I felt the story was great. Walking into that room with Vendrick walking in circles was a real holy shit moment where I finally began questioning what was really going on. Story-wise, this game nailed it. I'll be jumping into NG+ once I finish my second DS3 playthrough and knock some games off of my backlog.

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 08:41 AM PST

I'm looking for a second uchi so I can powerstance them, but you can only get one per playthrough and I'm trying to avoid starting ng+ if possible. If you want something in return just ask, and I'll get it if I can

Way too many years playing this game and I just found out that...

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 10:10 PM PST

There is a special plunging animation when attacking the Mastodon enemies, found out by mistake but it is pretty sweet.

Could someone drop me the dingy robe?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 01:50 PM PST

I think it's stupid that they lock CLOTHING items in NG+, like rings I get but CLOTHING items. No way, that's just a stupid game design decision in my opinion. But I would really appreciate it if someone dropped it for me. SM 1037339

What kind of build works well with them, I know they scale off strength but I heard that their best infusion is poison, which runs of of dexterity and adaptability, so any advice?

    Help an Undead brother out

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 10:51 AM PST

So I played ds2 sotfs with literally no knowledge on how to play soulsborne games. So I ended up putting this aside after reaching the gold sentinel things. I finished Bloodborne now and decided to jump back into this game with a little more experience.

I need help in deciding what build I'm gonna go for, my play style is mostly physical so I was thinking a str/dex build and also I suck at dodging and parrying

Any recommendations on builds? If you suggest a sorcery/faith/magic build thing, please provide information as I don't know anything of how they work.

    Thank you fellow Undead

Perhaps you've seen it, maybe in a dream

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 06:24 PM PST

A murky, forgotten land. A place where souls may mend your ailing mind. You will lose everything, once branded. The symbol of the curse. An augur of darkness. Your past, your future, your very light. None will have meaning and you won't even care. By then you'll be something other than human. A thing that feeds on souls. A hollow.

Long ago, in a walled off land, far to the north, a great king built a great kingdom. I believe they called it Drangleic. Perhaps you're familiar. No, how could you be. But one day, you will stand before its decrepit gate. Without really knowing why...

Like a moth drawn to a flame, your wings will burn in anguish. Time after time. For that is your fate. The fate of the cursed.

    Early Lightning Weapon?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 08:37 AM PST

So I heard lightning is a good element in this game and I want to do a faith-based lightning character (melee only, no ranged miracles). So what are some good options for early game lightning infusions? Also, what are some good mid/ late game options? Those dragons aren't going to slay themselves.

You think it's fine the invaded heals himself over and over?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 08:36 AM PST

Ofc when he doesn't got invaded through sign. It makes me salty af when i get him to 10% and he heals full while i also think it's fine at the same time. They may just want to do their business and then some red hollow butt comes and wants to fight. Opinions?

No shield play through on ng?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 08:09 AM PST

Hey guys, so for a little context I've only played through ds1, I'm on o&s on ng+ in that game atm. Anyhow, for the most part, after I got to o&s in ng, I decided to completely stop using my shield and opted to 2 hand for the rest of the game, I got through it with not that much trouble as I thought I would. Anyhow, I was thinking of just starting ds2 like that, but after playing a little this game is kicking my ass. Do you guys suggest I stick with it or opt out and start using my shield only when I feel it's necessary. I don't know much about ds2 :p

EDIT: Thanks to everyone who responded I'm sticking with the two handing! I just gotta be more confident in my abilities ig ahah.

Best Mods that change up the gameplay?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 06:54 AM PST

I know about a few of them but I want to know what you guys consider the best mods that change up the game in a big way either gameplay or story.

Similar to Augur of darkness etc.

    Thanks!

In SoTFS, which boss did you believe was the hardest?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 03:05 PM PST

IMO, I would have to choose the Burnt Ivory King. Both the buildup to it by having to explore the entire area, and the fact that I just can't deal with a boss that's left handed. Also, rip Otzdarva as it ruined his no hit run after 11 hours.

So yeah I really love the fist build

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 06:34 PM PST

Yeah I never bought the fist weapons cuz of how small of damage they seemed to do. So I never gave them a second thought. Then I was watching a lore video wile washing dishes and learned that they are mostly a scaling weapon and that it depends on my stats. So I decided to give it a go and I'm not disappointed at all. Sadly it takes a lot of material to level up both but that is my plan

    Need help improving/optimising a build.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2020 10:18 PM PST

So, I've plotted out a build that is mostly a melee build but also mixes in weapon buffs. I'm not sure how I can optimise or improve upon it. I'd post on the dark souls 2 build subreddit but it's kinda dead there.

I have the Lion Mage set listed but I really don't care for casting speed. It's just sort of default.
