    Something that made my day

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:59 AM PST

So I went against the rotten in ng+ with my sorcerer. Spells were doing a shit ton of damage. 10 crystal soul spears and he was left with literally a sliver of hp. I switched to my normal soul spears when an idea came to mind. Took some distance from him, opened my inventory as fast as possible and threw a dung pie at him. It did 15 damage but apparently it was enough to kill him

Killed by literally shit. A bad way to go.. I had fun :)

That's it, keep scrolling down and have a nice day!

    Dark Souls 2 is Hilarious

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:09 AM PST

CW: Existential dread, death, despair, long pieces of writing.

    The setup:

I took a break after playing Dark Souls (DS) before playing Dark Souls 2 (DS2). After the brutal journey through Lordran, I wasn't ready to move on and immerse myself in Drangleic to the extent I wanted to and all the minor changes to gameplay and graphics were irritating after having enjoyed my time with DS so much. Several months later, I was more able to give DS2 the chance it deserved without as much minute comparison to its predecessor. That said, as I compared them I was surprised that I found DS2 darkly comic. It seemed to me that when compared to DS, DS2 was a cynical black comedy confronting absurdism.

DS2 never made me laugh (well, once or twice by accident). When I call it comedy, I mean that comparison to DS highlighted the absurd. In this sense, the absurd is the struggle to find meaning in a world where there is no inherent purpose in life and to carry on regardless. It might not be to everybody's taste, but I found very dry deadpan humour in the events of DS2 being presented as an earnest struggle to save humanity when at the same time the game acknowledged that in the long run there would be no point in trying and your actions would be erased by the passage of time. Your mileage here may vary. (For a good treatment of absurdism I recommend the end of "Jordan Peterson & The Meaning of Life" by youtuber PhilosophyTube, and for a treatment of dark comedy in this context I recommend "The Darkness" by youtuber ContraPoints, references at the end).

    Why DS2 is funny:

The relevant themes of DS to this interpretation are overcoming adversity through effort and the inevitability of destiny. The first, overcoming adversity, is taught to the player mechanistically. SoulsBorne games typically punish the player harshly for mistakes or poor play, leading to loss of progress via character death. The inverse of this is that the game teaches the player that they can succeed if they do not give up, no matter their methods or skill. Pyromancy and summoning phantoms is equally as valid an approach for taking on an area as going in solo with just your fists as long as you pick yourself up after every death and keep trying until you win.

The inevitability of destiny is a narrative element that comes across most clearly in the designation of the player character as the "Chosen Undead". While personally I always linked this to the previous theme and concluded that any undead could be the Chosen if they did not abandon their quest or go hollow, the player character could just as well be chosen by fate for the purposes of this piece. In any case, I found that the quest of the Chosen Undead to link the fire and save the world was represented as noble, worthwhile and predestined.

Both of these themes are broadly present in DS2. Although there are changes to the mechanics of DS2 such as the introduction of life gems and human effigies which subtly alter the players experience, the combat still reinforces the message that through not giving up the player will overcome the challenges facing them. For me, hostile-NPCs not respawning if killed enough times helped to reinforce that message, as it gave a tangible sense of achievement. While the player character is not referred to "Chosen" in DS2 (in fact, the Emerald Herald who sets the player on the path to King Vendrick refers to the player character only as "bearer of the curse", a designation that could apply to any inhabitant of Drangleic) they are once again called upon to save the land by seeking out a mad king and dethroning them.

These themes are put in a new context when it is revealed in DS2 that history is cyclical. Through NPC dialogue , it is shown that Drangleic is the latest kingdom existing in a cycle that began with Lordran in which kingdoms rise, fall and are forgotten to give way to a new kingdom in which the cycle is doomed to repeat. This knowledge subtly changes the previous theme of the inevitability of destiny into the inability to change destiny. Whereas in DS the player was fighting to save the world by linking the fire, DS2 acknowledges that even if the player succeeds and saves Drangleic, the kingdom will eventually be worn down by entropy. Drangleic and the player character will be forgotten whether the player character succeeds in their quest or gives up and goes hollow.

This topic is explained well by youtuber Hbomberguy in his video "In Defense of Dark Souls 2", which is a through feature length analysis of DS2. Briefly, the boss designs and environments of DS2 reinforce the theme of the cyclical nature of history in the Souls universe. Mentioned in his video there are striking visual similarities between Chaos Witch Quelaag and Scorpioness Najka, both being female sorceresses whose torso has been fused to the abdomen of a giant arachnid. This deepens the tragedy of the fate that befell Quelaag, being turned into a half-spider monster, as it implies that humanity cannot escape their past failings and that history is doomed to repeat. Another comparison can be drawn between Gwyn, Lord of Cinder and King Vendrick. Both occupy roughly the same position in their respective kingdoms. They are the supreme ruler, gone mad in their search to prolong their reign and defended by loyal knights. Where they differ is that Gwyn is the final boss of DS and I felt his fate was represented as a noble tragedy that consumed him and his subjects, all victim of the curse that afflicts mankind. Superficially Vendrick seems much the same, and to reach him the player must once again fight through a crumbling realm and defeat the kings most loyal bodyguards. Unlike Gwyn he is no threat to the player and can be ignored, it being later revealed in DLC that Vendrick succumbed to despair and gave up his goal of linking the fire. This serves to undercut the players expectations of Vendrick by denying the player a boss fight that would justify their struggle to find him. Vendrick is also a reminder that the player character is not the first to try and link the fire, and a reminder that giving up would have roughly the same impact as success. Eventually, someone will take the throne of Drangleic, and one day Drangleic will be forgotten as completely the kingdoms that preceded it.

The environments of DS2 also compound the absurd struggle to find meaning in a world whose ultimate fate is known. Instead of being a recurrence of DS environments, the environments of DS2 tend to depart from a grounded and practical world in favour of a more fantastical and dreamlike world. Specific differences in level design and art direction are well covered by Hbomberguy, but briefly feature less interconnectivity between areas and tend to be less grounded in reality, a good example being the Iron Keep that wallows in a lake of lava. The intentional change to a less physically coherent world reinforces the absurdity of the player characters actions. By setting the game in environments that don't seem like they could exist outside the game world, they player is reminded that they are playing a game. The ability of the player to affect the story via free will is an illusion created by the game developers which is usually ignored by suspension of disbelief. In this case, reminding the player they have no real control over the events that take place in Drangleic makes them realise that the same is true of the player character, and all of the people in the Souls universe.

So far I've been try to argue that DS2 and DS together effectively capture themes of existentialism and lack of inherent meaning in life. But what even is that and why am I calling it absurd? There are a group of related philosophies, existentialism and absurdism, that each recognise and seek to deal with the apparent contradiction between humanities search for meaning in life and the lack of inherent meaning in a random and chaotic universe – much like the attempts of the Chosen Undead and the Bearer of the Curse to link the fire when they know that the passage of time will undo their actions. This conflict is known as the absurd. The cyclical nature of history in the Souls universe feeds into these philosophies, as it makes certain that the player and player character know that there actions do not serve a higher purpose. Vendrick and all the kings that came before him might have thought the universe chose them to rule a mighty empire, but them and their works have been forgotten like Ozymandias. My understanding of existentialism is that the player character should attempt to create his own meaning for existence and live a fulfilling life according to this, whereas absurdism advocates that a person should be fully aware of the lack of inherent meaning in existence and carry on regardless without resorting to inventing meaning. For me the Souls games capture absurdism better than existentialism because the player is confronted with the absurd at every step in DS2, through boss fights and environment design and the actions of characters, and are encouraged through the theme of overcoming adversity through effort to accept the absurd and carry on regardless.

    To finish:

In summary, DS2 puts the themes of DS1 into a new context that highlights the absurdity of the player characters attempts to have an impact on the world of DS2 and undercuts the struggles of the player character in DS by making the player aware on a narrative level that the outcomes of their actions do not matter. When taken with DS, DS2 is a dark comedy challenging the player to consider why they continue despite lack of meaning for their actions. For myself, in the face of the absurd, one must laugh and continue in spite of it. And what could be more suitable in a game about the undead than gallows humour?

    The last word:

To put what I have written in context. I played Dark Souls for the first time in 2018, and recently finished Dark Souls 2 at the end of 2019, playing the original release of both rather than the HD re-releases. I haven't played any of the other SoulsBorne games (Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice) and I've mostly avoided the media response in the form of reviews and critiques of these games. I've a little under 80 hours of playtime in the Souls universe, and I'm something of a newcomer/outsider. The topics in this piece might get quite heavy at points, but I think as well as confronting the absurd that Dark Souls also teaches the player that even if they can't see a reason to carry on, they shouldn't give up.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 01:07 PM PST

Didn't think I'd kill him on first try, since I went in with a purpose to learn his moveset and get prepared for further attempts. Guess I was wrong and changed my mind after I survived with like 2 HP. I probably got really lucky during the fight, but I'm really happy that I don't have to run through all the knights over and over again.

Advice for Miracle run? (Have some questions)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 01:56 PM PST

    Hello,

I recently started a miracle run and cant really find any useful offensive miracles aside from lightning spear so far. I don't seem to be doing a lot of damage either. What is some general advice one could give, so that I can have some powerful offensive miracles that do good damage? (Locations, maybe rings, etc)

    Thanks!

    Need some weapon suggestions

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 01:46 PM PST

Just starting the game. As background I've played ds1, ds3, bloodborne, and sekiro so I'm familiar enough with the systems. In ds3 I always liked using dual swords like the warden twin blades. Is there anything comparable to that in this game? Are they viable or is strength the way to go? This is purely for PVE.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:55 AM PST

I just beat the old iron king dlc for the first time and boy was it good, great aesthetic, the fume knight was an amazing fight, and minus a few areas it was a great experience. One question I have though is the elevators, some of them look like the old knights in heides tower, any lore explanation?

    Advice on going for platinum

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:54 AM PST

    Okay, so I love DS2.
I've put 100s of hours into it, but now it's pretty dead from a multiplayer perspective on PS4.
I'm literally two trophies away from Platting the game, but those two trophies are a doozy.
I have to get all Miracles and all Pyromancies, I have most of them but the final few require things like ranking 3 in both Sunbros and Blue Sentinels. With no one playing the game anymore, that's actually pretty difficult. Luckily, these 3 spells can be got without needing online help.

Here's the question: is it worth trying to find people to help me farm ranks (considering I'd have to beat someone 500+ times to get the blue sentinals spells) or should I just go through NG++ to buy them from my ghosty boi?

Is the Elite Knight Set an armor for a Left Handed?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:47 AM PST

Isee in every game that you have a Gauntlet in your Left Hand and a Leather glove in your Right Hand, im not completely sure but if i were using an armor, i would use a Gauntlet in the hand i have my sword and a leather glove where i have a Shield coverung my hand, thus protecting it from damage, but im no Knight or Duelist to know about this anyway... Oscar has the set but he used the shield on the Gauntlet hand. So im confused.

Was Dark Souls 2 beeing the worst of the series just kind of a meme at this point ?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 08:34 PM PST

After playing every soulsborn title religiously (including sekiro and bloodborn) for over 1200 hours or probably more in summary i really go back and ask myself why DS2 is considered as the weakest of the series. I would argue without a doubt that the experience of playing DS2 is absolutely unique surreal and wierd and does not stand behind the other games. The levels are strange, the lore kinda insane and the mood...THE MOOOOD.

The whole game plays way more as an **experience** then all other titles of FROM. The only game which is similar in this regard may be Dark Souls I in my opinion.

I dont know if you realised this but DS I was quite the shitty Dark Souls game.

    Probably the worst.

Clunky combat which often lead to awkward moments or just unfluid gameplay, Really really really bad endlevel design and probably some of the absolute worst bosses ever created in the history of 3d games. And lets not speak of the PvP

Try to convince someone to play DS I after he played Bloodborn, Sekiro or DS III. There are of course people who will love it just as much but it works way better the other way around.

But even the *worst* parts like the copy paste dragon asses just sit right in this world, in this athmosphere and you just accept it and it becomes more of an emotional experience. You mastered the controls, you trained your patience and you pushed forward.

I think a lot of the genius of DS I was intentional... but a lot of it surely was not. The later games are all really streamlined in the sense of the experience. Leaving less room for error.

Bloodborn for example is like an refined masterpiece .But as dark as it tries to be it does not have the grittiness and the dirtiness of DS I. It is too perfect. Too controlled in its presentation. I was playing a tripple A movie with (granted), stunning visuals, bewitching athmosphere, intriguing lore and awsome combat/gameplay. But it never really felt personal.

You know what i mean if you remember the first time you played through DS I. It is the feeling we all hunted from these days on. This personal feeling of unholy discovery and strange places. Like the world you see is not created but born. Sometimes not even serving a purpose just to be dedicated to a lore you will never know about.

Blighttown does not even play like a level it is more of a bug .

*Am i really supposed to walk over this ? Well this is not really indicated clearly ! Why the fuck is this area poisonous there is nothing to do here anyways ! Why the hell is this room behind the bonfire so gigantic ? Ok alright this is straight up bullshit game design.*

    *This game is great 10/10*

Why ? Because all these weakpoints are strong points which shape it as an experience. What makes us ponder stimulates us and creates own undictated thoughts and emotions. It has character and flaws and its boldness is rewarded with one of the most dedicated fanbases in the gaming community.

But then DS II comes along and people shat on it for beeing... beeing what ? I can not even remember it correctly.

It was a more stomachable game which had a unique spark to it which it preserved even to this date.

Where the world of Dark Souls was sinister and dark DS II was moldy and ass

Where Bloodborn will be violent and creative DS II was moody and strange

Where Dark Sous 3 will be epic and solitary DS II was sad and forbidden

The whole experience was that strong feeling of this sluggish dreaming world where time does not move. The gameplay was tight and enjoyable and the locations where a good mixture of better level design and strange corners.

It was indeed really different to DS I but way more similar than every other title which would follow. They where similar in uniqueness and i think due to nostalgy and replaying more and more people come to the point where they realise that it might be as good as any other title FROM put out.

For me atleast there is no such feeling as seeing the golden eversinking sun glitter in the waves and hearing that strange melody fly over a long dead and forgotten land,

then getting fucking ASSBLASTED because i dont put enough points in Agility WTF IS THIS SHIT DS II WHAT KIND OF MECHANIC IS THIS ???!!

    This game is great 10/10
