    Dark Souls' Undead Asylum tutorial is brilliant.

    You start in a small cell. You are required to interact with the environment to escape the cell by picking up a key from a nearby corpse. A button prompt appears at the bottom of the screen that says pressing "A" will pillage the corpse. You now know how to interact with the environment.

    With that newfound knowledge at hand, escaping the cell proves to be no challenge. In the hallway, there are a bunch of glowing messages on the ground to interact with that tells you the inputs for basic actions like light attacks, strong attacks, dashing, and target locking. There are 2 enemies by both attack messages, a flight of stairs after the dashing message, and a single enemy in the corner of the large room further on that allows you to get a good feel for the lock-on mechanic. It's worth noting that all 3 enemies throughout this section never attack the player, so you're given much leniency while you practice fighting.

    Some players might not notice this right away, but after performing these basic actions, a green bar on the top left part of the screen goes down. If there is no more greenness left, you become unable to attack or run. The game doesn't tell you this because it's unnecessary, as it can simply show you instead. Same can be said of the HP bar and the ability to respawn at bonfires.

    Speaking of which, you soon reach the very first bonfire. A message on the ground tells you that bonfires restore HP when you rest at them. Investigation of your surroundings will lead you to a small steel door you can't open from this side, but a large door that you can open is in plain sight. Going through it leads to the largest room yet, with a message that says "Get away!" in the middle. Shortly after approaching this message, a gigantic enemy crashes into the room from above.

    Technically the Asylum Demon isn't the first thing that can kill you, but it's the first real threat you'll encounter. Instead of a tiny health bar above it, it has it's own large health bar always present at the bottom of the screen. Using your few combat skills to fight it will make you realize that your weapon is very weak and does virtually nothing to the demon, so you're left with two choices: heed the message on the ground or die trying to kill the demon. It's actually possible to kill the Asylum at this point, and as a matter of fact, clever players who've already figured out how to equip items on their own might equip firebombs that can very easily kill the demon, but with a broken sword alone, victory is highly improbable.

    Whether or not you succeed, you enter an opening that immediately shuts behind you and find another bonfire. Afterwards, you find a long corridor with an archer at the very end launching arrows at any who try to proceed. Nearby is a shield on a corpse, and the adjacent room has messages that tell you how to open the menu to equip your shield and use it.

    One of the two messages tells you the shield need to be on your left hand to block with it, with the left hand icon in the equipment menu being a shield and dagger rather than a sword and axe, further guiding you to equip the shield properly and also hinting at the fact that certain daggers you'll find are better on the left hand. You'll know to use the d-pad to navigate the menus, because before you even begun the game, you had to use it to navigate the menus to start a new game and create your character.

    Knowing how to open and navigate the menu, you can follow the various button prompts to explore the menu and read descriptions of items and stats, but whether or not you do so at this point, you'll be prepared to continue forward with a board to block the arrows and sword. The archer will soon run away like a dumb idiot baby, allowing you to pick up and equip a better weapon to get revenge on the archer and kill things better.

    Soon you'll reach a fork. Between the fork is a message that tells you how to backstep and roll, the latter of which will potentially help you avoid a certain trap up ahead. Going to the left will lead to a dead end with an item on the upper part of some broken stairs that you can't reach from there. Going to the right will lead to a pair of stairs going up and down. The right stairs lead to a familiar one-sided door that leads to the very first bonfire, illustrating one of the many rewards of exploration: shortcuts. Heading up the left stairs will be met with a gigantic ball to the face if you don't react fast enough, establishing the need to pay close attention to the environment to avoid traps.

    After going up the stairs and slaying the boulder-pushing jerk, you'll find that you can't proceed through the next door without the proper key. Travelling back down the stairs will show you that the ball broke the wall below, allowing you to enter a room with the knight that allowed you to escape laying on some rubble.

    If you choose to listen to him, he will tell you of his quest and asks you to continue it in his place, as he is too weak to do so. He then gives you an Estus Flask and the key to the door upstairs, then dies shortly after leaving the room.

    If you choose to not listen to him, he will tell you to leave him alone and will die after leaving the room. As your soul counter goes up as if you killed an enemy, returning to the room will lead to the discovery of the key and Estus Flask from where he died. This establishes two things: choices in conversations matter and NPCs can drop items upon death.

    If you choose to attack him, he will die in a single blow and will drop his items, establishing that violence is a means of interacting with NPCs to get things from them, but the obvious consequences of such brutality will be discovered upon further experimentation on other NPCs. Whatever you choose to do, a pair of messages will appear that tell you how to use items and that Estus usage is restored by bonfires.

    Continuing past the locked door, you'll find a series of messages that tell you how to perform actions like two-handing a weapon, kicks, and jump attacks. The last of the 3 tells you enemies reappear after resting at a bonfire. Actually, while I'm on the subject, despite all these messages telling you the inputs of various actions, they don't tell you exactly how these actions are used, so you have to discover their uses yourself.

    That aside, immediately afterwards you'll encounter a learning opportunity; a pair of enemies in a tight area with an archer in the back. Taking them on there is impractical because of the archer, but if you lure the enemies out into the open, you can take them on more easily and won't have to worry about the archer.

    Though you can then go into the fog gate to the left, following and reading the visible messages will tell you how to backstab and parry/riposte. A nearby enemy with a shield will not only let to test these actions, but potentially allows you to discover that kicking is effective at breaking the guard of certain enemies.

    Finally, the fog gate. Right before it is a message that tells you how to perform a plunging attack while falling. Entering the fog gate will lead to a ledge. The big health bar from earlier appears. The Asylum Demon is below. Time for a plunging attack.

    Performing a plunging attack on the Asylum Demon will take out a huge chunk of health, which is extremely rewarding and also shows just how powerful plunging attacks can be, something which the Dark Souls sequels' tutorials fail to establish (I won't get into how bad the sequels' tutorials are, at least in this post). By using all the skills you've been taught, the defeat of the Asylum Demon is an inevitability, and you earn the key to your freedom.

    While there's probably some smaller things I missed, I think I went into enough detail. Dark Souls is an exceedingly influential game, but of all the things other games copy from it, the tutorial design isn't one of them, which is a shame. It's a tutorial that effectively teaches the player how to play the game without treating them like a fool, and that makes learning the gameplay mechanics incredibly rewarding. And the game doesn't stop intelligently teaching you things after the Undead Asylum, as this post from an epic dude shows. However, this post is already super long so I won't dig further into it.

    Lore theory regarding the abyss and dark

    We all know humanity came from the dark soul, and from many item descriptions we know darkness is directly related to humanity, so it's safe to say that darkness is the essence of humanity.

    Now, if that's the case, why did the deacons, aldrich, and oolacile all fall to the abyss, and how is it different from dark. We know that abyss is closely related to dark, and we know that abyss is also very close to humanity. But not in a good way. When someone is taken by the abyss, they become agressive and possibly turn into monsters. Why? What makes it different from the dark?

    Well, this is where my theory comes in. In the beginning, there was the dark soul and the darkness, that was patiently waiting for age of fire to subside, so that humans can single-handedly rule over the world as nature intended. But then gwyn linked the first flame, artificially prolonging the age of fire. This, according to my theory, gave birth to the abyss. A more radical form of darkness. If darkness is a human, then the abyss is the agressive, angry, depressed side of the human. It's a sort of revolt, a want for revolution, just like how the french peasants could only overthrow their monarchy through radical means, the abyss will do the same to the gods and anything that stands against it. Normal humans just aren't enough for that. Until true humans can thrive, there have to be radical humans (they look more like frenzied beasts though) until the gods are gone. Only then can true, normal humanity thrive.

    Letting the flame fade is a good way to subside the abyss for a while, but it will always be there since the flame will never truly fade. So similar to the undead curse related to linking the first flame, there will be the abyss that will take people whenever the first flame reignites. Darkness and light both have their negative consequences.

    The only way to stop it is to break the cycle.

    What was your most unexpectedly hard/easy boss

    I see so many posts about the capra demon being super hard but had killed him the 2nd time on my very first playthrough of DS1, which was my first of any souls type game. O&S is also easy for me. It took a few trys my first time but havent died to them yet on ng3 and 2 other builds ive so far played.

    In saying that i also continue to get smacked by the moonlight butterfly even today and always get gang banged by the first phantoms in the darkroot garden lol

    What are your unconventionally easy or hard bosses?

    Anyone remember the Project Dark trailer?

    The working title of Dark Souls was "Project Dark" and this original trailer for it shows some interesting things. There used to be Capra Demons in the Undead Church, the Hellkite Drake used to be closer to Firelink Shrine, and it looks like Crestfallen used to be a female. This trailer was shown about a year before the game was released.

    THE TRUE PURPOSE OF SOUL OF CINDER

    From a lore perspective i never really understood the purpose of soul of cinder. Why would it stop the player from linking the fame, what more do i need to prove to be the chosen one. Its not just this i had many other questions too. Now, after thinking about it a lot i finally have somewhat of a satisfiable answer.

    The true purpose of the soul of cincer is to protect the flame but not from people who try to steal it or distroy it. It protects itself from people who try to link it.

    See the end of the life cycle of a flame is to fade. It is a natural process. So when the first flame was reaching its end lord Gwyn sacrificed himself to extend the age of fire thereby disrupting the natural cycle. So the next time when the flame fades in order to prevent anyone from further linking it, the flame created the soul of cinder as a defence mechanism.

    But fortunately for Gwyn this whole scenario worked in his favour because the only true way to break the cycle of fire that he created, the dark lord must consume the flame and assur in the age of darkness. But since the soul of cinder protects the flame anyone who aproaches will be defended(Gwyn gets free security).

    Also subsequent linking of the flame will make the soul of cinder more strong. So even if someone realizes how to break it cycle it will be very difficult to defeat a buffed soul of cinder on steroids. I dont know if Gwyn did it intentionally or not but i think this concept is cool.

    Just to clear up confusion around the Solaire quest (spoilers)

    So I killed the maggot thing in the hallway in Demon Ruins, but I did the bosses out of order, (Firesage, BoC, Centipede). I wasn't able to summon him for the centipede boss fight, but he was sitting there at the bonfire in the next room, and now he is sitting in the shortcut hallway.

    What I'm trying to say is, will I still be able to summon him for Gwyn or did I screw it up?

    Why they decided to make this so confusing is beyond me.

    Rank all the dragon boss fights from your most favourite to least favourite. I am not going to be excluding Wyverns from this ranking. For anyone who has forgotten the bosses here is a list

    1- Gaping Dragon

    2- Seath the Scaleless

    3- Black Dragon Kalameet

    DS2

    1- Guardian Dragon

    2- Ancient Dragon

    3- Sinh the Slumbering Dragon

    1- Ancient Wyvern

    2- King of Storms (I know its just one phase but he has a health bar so)

    Give your reasoning for ranking a boss highest or lowest. Here is my personal list (ranked in descending order)

    1- Dark Eater Midir (Because each attack is just awesome and even from a lore perspective Midir is the only true dragon you fight at full power)

    7- Ancient Wyvern

    Anor Londo is heaven

    After the swamp area and then the fortress omg.

    Flying to Anor Londo and walking on this beautiful concrete was crazy good.

    Big enemies, a lot of space, my tanky tank was feeling at ease.

    Appart from the entrance of the main cathedral, where I just rushed past the gargoyles and archers after being sent to death multiple times by those arrows. But inside, wow. Fighting those silver knights is so good. And finally found a blacksmith. Oh yeah Havel's Armor too. I can't improve it?

    Also Bonfire, bonfire everywhere. What the point of the one at the bottom of the moving stairs? It's like one in front of entrance, one at the bottom of the stairs and an another one just inside the cathedral. I'm sure I've missed something about the one at the bottom.

    Anyway still progressing, I really really love this place. I've played DS3 before, and it was really bringing nostalgia. And sun!

    Is there a reason why everybody is calling the "slugs" in Blighttown slugs?

    I'm not sure if anyone pointed this out yet but they are obviously leeches.

    If you search imageges for "leech" on Google (WARNING: gross), You can clearly see that they modelled them after them. They even have that patern on their back. They even move like leeches, lunging forward ataching their head and draging their body.

    I played this game in 2013 the first time and I watched a ton of playthroughs online and it always bothered me.

    I guess my question is is this just not known or it is known but it is just what everibody alwais called tem?

    Spent 3 days trying to finish off kalameet, and felt no relief after that shit ass fight. All I had left was Gwyn. Just finished parrying his ass to death! That felt so good. First time out of DSR or DS3 I successfully parried any boss.

    Most bosses weren't too bad (a couple titanite demons were worse). The only other fight that gave me much grief and relief was O&S.

    I'm on my first run, and I absolutely love this game. The aesthetic (and also graphics, in the case of the remaster) is beautiful, the combat is very fun, and the Lore is cool (and obscure) as fuck.

    I just killed the iron golem and got to Anor Londo, and HOLY SHIT the VIEW. It's also a really sweet detail the fact that the first Anor Londo bonfire, the one with the firekeeper, is already lit and kindled.

    That's it, I just wanted to fangirl about the game.

    I did it in 25 hours and 45 minutes. I realized right away that I had to "GIT GUD". Thank you dark souls for giving me a challenge. I bought this game with one intention and that was to not give up and continue to play. I give up on a lot of things when it gets to hard. I can gladly say I'm done and this makes me feel so damn good. "PRAISE THE SUN LORE". #Solaire

    Orange Disc in Undead Asylum Basement (Return)

    There's an odd orange disc on a column in the Undead Asylum basement where the Stray Demon is hanging out. It's very odd and seems rather out of place. Here's a (bad) screenshot from my PS3 version.

    It seems to get brighter when I shoot it with an arrow.

    So I took Care of Iron Golem, what to do next?

    It was piss easy. I think I'm kinda overlevelled for the zone (level 50 to be exact). I haven't finished Sen's fortress or stepped in the Catacombs yet. Got the Cage Key so I will probably explore the fortress a little more. Before setting off for Anor Londo, Is it a good time to explore the Catacombs, and what gear should I wear for it? Currently rocking the Eastern set, pretty good physical resistance, combined with the physical resistance ring.

    About to take my first run at DS1

    Hey all!

    So I finally bit the bullet and ordered DS1 remastered. I should be getting it tomorrow with time to actually sink my teeth in over the weekend.

    I bought Sekiro a week ago and have fallen in love with the style of game that it is. I know they're totally different games but still, there's something exciting about starting the game that really kicked off the genre.

    I'm super excited to dive in as this will NOT be my first run at it. I still have my original 360 copy that I bounced off of hard. At the time, I don't think I had the right mindset for this game but I'm going to dive in again and really stick to it.

    I'm curious if anyone has any starter tips and if there are any interesting facts that I should know. Can't wait to get started!

    Gargoyle Skip

    I'm trying to do a run where I kill the least amount of bosses possible. I've gotten the amount of bosses to 3, being Asylum Demon, O&S, and Gwyn. I think it might be possible to skip the Gargoyle's, but I'm not 100% sure. I think it's possible to use the same method as Quelaag and Sen's Skip to do it. Clear out the path to the boss except for one of the enemies at the entrance to Andre's, do what you would to do Sen's Skip, but instead of going to Sen's, go up to the Gargoyle's, go through the fog gates, and exit.

    Does anyone know if this is possible?
