    [Self] Elite knight Cosplay

Hey! Some of you might know me as Sunlight cosplay or SunlightofAstora, I just wanted to share my favorite photo of my hand made elite knight set! Firstly, I did make all of this (excluding pants?) the tunic is hand embroidered and took an entire month to do and my first attempt at embroidery. All the chain mail is hand made to! All the all armor is custom and painstakingly templates and crafted with Eva foam. The Astora sword and crest shield are made with XPS foam and scaled 1;1 to me so that every proportion is as close to accurate as possible!

I've never felt more accomplished in my life. I completely understand why everyone loves it. This has been one of the best gaming experiences in my life, and now that I've beat this, I feel like I can accomplish anything. Thank you, Dark Souls.

[Lore] How is the undead curse transmitted?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 02:38 PM PST

So I understand that the curse is an innate part of being human, but how exactly do you "become" cursed, as in turn from human to undead. What exactly causes the darksign to appear on your body?

    Dark Souls question

    Posted: 19 Nov 2019 02:56 AM PST

    Hey everybody 🖐🏻.

I am thinking about to buy the Dark Souls trilogy because I have recently finished Blodborne. One key factor I most liked in the game is the fast combat. However, in videos I have seen and stories I have heard, that Dark Souls has a pretty slow combat (DS1 and 2). Is there a way to play DS1 and 2 like Bloodborne or should I just try the new combat? And why do you all love Darks Souls?

    Dark Souls remastered or not

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 11:29 PM PST

I was wondering whether I should get Dark souls Remastered on Steam or just the normal version (I have a PS3). I've heard terrible things about the remaster so I really don't know what choice is best.

I'm gonna be honest I did not expect it to take so much time and energy, and it will probably be a while before I try something like this again.

    Thank you Dark Souls

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 05:59 PM PST

TL;DR- dark souls helped me realize how to enjoy other genres of games.

I'll never forget in ds3, while playing with a friend because I was too much of a scrub to play by myself, when I realized why dark souls is an amazing series. I don't remember where we were in the game but I remember leveling up at firelink and realizing that no matter how many levels I got, or how many times I equipped a new 'better' item, it didn't matter. I realized all at once that unlike other RPGs I have played, dark souls wasn't about numbers or stats. The better I performed in-game came solely from me as a player living out the tired old git gud phrase that wasn't tied to how high my stamina or vitality bars were. Because of that lesson I've since branched out and began to enjoy games I always told myself I just wasn't good at. I now thoroughly enjoy fighting games and can even sit and play a racing game for a few hours. Dark souls had the rpg elements to pull me in and the really vague story and moral choices that kept me interested or I loved from the games I used to play, but also had that special something of enjoying learning mechanics and rising to the challenge. Fucking thank you dark souls for reinvigorating my love for video games as a medium and not just burning myself out looking at the same thing with a different paint job.

And of course thank you to the DS community for making me feel welcome enough to even express my gratitude in the first place. Don't go hollow because you're all beautiful people.

Tips and Tricks for the Orenstein and Smough fight?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 11:05 PM PST

I got to Anor Londo today and made my way to the infamous Orenstein and Smough boss fight that i was warned about so much. Im on probably my 20th try but I'm always dying either right before I kill one of them, or during the second phase.
What makes the fight easier? Is it better to kill Orenstein first, or Smough? Is there some kind of special item that would help? Anything would help. Thanks!

Looking for Dark Souls quotes to help with my depression

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 08:47 PM PST

I've been dealing with depression for a long time now, usually in spurts. I've been really sad lately, and to help I am making a notebook with quotes from video games, movies and just life to fill it with. Any time I'm down, i want to be able to read it and have a word of encouragement, remind me of something I love, or just laugh. This whole series has been instrumental in helping me get through these lash few years, so I can't think of another game I would want quotes from. If you can think of any from any game of the series, please let me know! And thank you!

    Favorite Dark Souls and Why?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 03:54 PM PST

Let reminisce!! Mine is DS1. Why, because I could sit and grind the same game for 100s of hours and still get to try out different roles and immerse myself in the lore and feel a real connection to the game!

Also I posted a birthday post because my birthday was lonely being in a new state stressed, and that post got taken down :/. But I'm sending out good vibes out to those who commented and made everything feel a little better. I really do appreciate it. It really helped ✌️. Cheers!

Also also shoutout to the homies with the same birthday! (Nov 16th Gang)

    JUST DEFEATED O&S

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 08:58 AM PST

Over a year ago I played DS1 for the first time, amd I could not get past O&S (used a Claymore). I died so many times I just decided to close the game and forget about it. Well I bought the remastered shortly after it came out and finally decided to play it. My build is the same as back then, pyromancer with a big ass sword, but this time I entered the fog with a +10 Zweihander and on my 6. try I FINALLY GOT THEM. I killed Smough first (always wanted Ornstein's armor) and he went down after ONLY 6 HITS. This fight is actually pretty easy if you know the game and os prepared, but damn if didn't scream in joy after killing skinny pikatchu. Now it's on to the skinless crystal lizard.

    Tips are appreciated

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 05:30 PM PST

This is my 3rd souls-like game that I've played. First I played Dark Souls 3 and I loved that game very much. After, I played Bloodborne. Coming to this game is completely different and far more different than I expected. The game is very noticeably slower-paced and more methodical. I have just beaten the bell gargoyles (which took me around a half-hour). I am trying to use strategies that I used in DS3 or BB and I just end up dying. I have found that just standing still with your shield up is the best option but it is the least fun. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Revisiting the Painted World of Ariamis (LORE)

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 08:40 PM PST

DISCLAIMER: in this following analysis I won't take into account any of the new lore added by Dark Souls 3, in particular Ashes of Ariandel, as I consider the world of Dark Souls 1 to be self-contained enough to not need his sequels to explain it further or even retcon certain elements.

    • The origin of the Painting

Before presenting my theory regarding the creation of this outerworld, I need to first talk about the relationship between Gwyndolin and Priscilla: if the crossbreed is killed, the chosen undead will be marked as a "sinner". This is a peculiar kind of "sin", called "PvE Sin" on the wiki, and there are only three instances other than by turning other characters hostile that can trigger it: breaking the pact with Alvina's covenant, dissipating the illusion of Gwynevere or angering Gwyndolin himself. While the connection between the latter two is obvious, it's important to remember that Alvina's clan is defending the tomb of Artorias from graverobbers, which is a valid reason for grant the divine protection of Gwyndolin upon them. Now, I'm suggesting that Gwyn's last born is also watching over Priscilla and I'll explain these are the reasons I came up with to justify this theory:

They're either sisters or Seath's creations: Priscilla isn't the only one to display abnormal dragon-like features, Gwyndolin too has snakes coming out of her lower half. The rings states that snakes are nothing more than imperfect dragons and we also meet snake/human hybrid in Sen's Fortress and the Duke's Archives: Gwyndolin might be another of Seath's experiments on scales and a failment at that, while Priscilla is a more homogeneous mix, so much that it can be called an actual "crossbreed".

The connections with Seath don't stop there: Gwyndolin doesn't use any form of lighting attack, he uses a catalyst, not a talisman, and only fight casting magics and using arrows imbued with magic. This is explained by her affinity with the Moonlight, which is also related to Seath via the Moonlight Greatsword born from its tail and the Moonlight Horn created from the souls of the Moonlight Butterfly, another of its creatures.

Priscilla, on the other hand, can turn invisible exactly like the crystal path inside the cave that leads to Seath's most precious treasure, the primordial crystal.

That said, it's hard to say if they were both born this way or where later mutated or one was born like that and the other transformed, yet the relation between the two and Seath seems clear enough to me.

So now I can go back and talk about why I believe Gwyndolin commissioned Ariamis to paint this world so that her lonely sister could find a home where she didn't feel ostracized: both were hidden from the world for their repulsive appearance, but while Gwyndolin took upon himself to rule Anor Londo and punish those who dare offend the Gods after Gwyn sacrified himself to the flame and Gwynevere fled, Priscilla had no place in Lordran and so the painting was born to house all the forlons (and the enemies of the deities). Her being said to be "trapped" in the painting, might imply that she's simply has nowhere else to go.

I want to go a little further to with this and say that Priscilla gave the Plain Doll as a farewell giift and a thanks to Ariamis himself, who ended up rotting in the Undead Asylum once cursed: this would help explain why the body is guarded by none other than a Black Knight of Gwyn. If one wants to oppose to the idea of the Gods working with human, I'll mention Ciaran, who may have only be indocrinated to hate humans by the Gods (after all Kaathe speaks clearly of Gwyn's fear for humanity and the dark within them), and the enigmatic Crystal Knight in the Archives, who's strongly hinted to be the lost craftsman Eidas by the floreal pattern on his set that not coincidentally only appears on the Chloranty Ring (a ring of "unknow origins" that increases stamina regeneration, exactly like the Grass Crest shield, another item of "unknown origins" that is guarded by one of Gwyn's faithful knight"), Gwyn's garb, Smough's Armor and Hammer and Solaire' Shield.

This last section was more of an off-topic "tightening all loose ends" deal, but now I'll discuss the Painted World itself.

    • The inhabitants of the Painted World

Engorged Undeads: Pyromancers who, considering the toxin filled infection that has swollen up their head, might have originated in Blighttown. The two pyromancies found in the area specify how they weren't created in the Great Swamp. They don't appear to bear the same parasitic larvae of Izalith, that's why I'd opt for Blighttown as their homeland.

Phalanx: Other than a mere reference to Demon's Souls, I'm not sure what these undeads are supposed to be: they don't have any peculiar ability, they simply have a deformed body. They might be another weird experiment by Seath, but its finalities are dubious.

Heavy Knight: Despite the Crestfallen Merchant talking about how none managed to visit Anor Londo, we can find three warrior inside the city: a balder knight and a berenike knight who appear only after the illusion of the sun vanishes, suggesting to me they're members of the Darkmoon Covenant, and the corpse of Black Iron Tarkus. Taken these into account, I can easily believe another brave knight, who was capable of surviving the proving ground of the Gods, was either offered or imposed the role of a guardian inside the Painting. I don't think this character in particular is anyone specific, like say Knight King Rendall, though (on a side note, I'm more inclined to believe that the Soul of a Hero found in the cage near the one where Logan is trapped in Sen's Fortress is all that remains of Rendall). This is exactly the reason why I don't believe the Painting is supposed to be a prison for Priscilla: we have numerous Painting Guardians, whose set is found in a chest (not a corpse, this is important to notice) inside the Painting, guarding the very entrance to the area and a massive knight blocking the path to Priscilla, but she herself has the exit to world just behind her and she's feared even by the Gods, so these men wouldn't stand a chance at stopping her.

Undead Dragon: A survivor of the great war with the Lords is a perfect subject to study for Seath, especially since this speciment still has some of its scales.

Crow Demon: This name comes from the wiki and although unfortunately there's no description mentioning what these mobs are called, in official concept arts they're referred to as "crow-men of Velka" and this is more likely to be their proper name, since the demons of the world of Dark Souls are particular creature born in a certain manner. Still I can't quite say what caused this chimeric appearance: I can't even accuse Seath this time, since I see no reason it should have any interest toward crows; in an interview Miyazaki said that originally it was their devotion to Velka that deformed them, but I have no idea how much weight this statement should have on the final product. Interestingly enough their only drop are Souvenirs of Reprisal, rewards that Darkmoon Knights offer to Gwyndolin as proofs of the fulfillment of their duty: since Velka oversees the Book of the Guilty and her bishops handles the Indictments that turn invaders into targets of Gwyndolin's assassins, a pact between the two gods was clearly established some time ago and possibly the line between the worshippers of these deities thinned. Yet, as Vow of Silence and Oswald suggests, all sins are the domain of Velka and the misdeed of the Gods, especially one who altered the course of nature, are to be punished as well: the rapier wielded by her inhuman swordsmen deals occult damage, which is particularly effective against the gods and their kins, and her miracle can shutdown any spellcaster, that's why her worshipper are better imprisoned in this world cut-off from Lordran to prevent the plot against the Gods mentioned in the Effigy Shield to suceed. It is no coincidence that another occult weapon is found guarded inside a Mimic behind an illusory wall in Anor Londo and the Dark Ember itself is hidden in a decrepit cathedral of the Painted World.

    Wheel Skeletons:

Nito himself was a target of the aforementioned plotters and his skeletons serve another line of defense together with the Berenike Knight and the Painting Guardians that prevent anyone from reaching Priscilla. If someone would talk Priscilla into joining this plot against the God, she could easily overthrow the now decayed deities.

    Xanthous King Jeremiah:

A chaos pyromancer, whose other title, stated in the description of his set, is the "exile". Considering how only a deep knowledge founded in Izalith can teach someone to cast the spells he uses, I firmly believe he's native to the land: maybe he was banished or chose to leave when the Witch of Izalith decided to turn herself into a seedbed for the flame of chaos and turned the inhabitants of the place into demonic abherrations. Once defeated as a black spirit, his phantom is found sit behind Priscilla, the pose not suggesting he was planning to escape, which makes me think he purposely decided to trap himself into the Painting to escape the Witch and the imminent degeneration of Lost Izalith. This has been mentioned multiple times, but I want to say it myself anyway: the crown resembles the parasitic wall hugger of Blighttown and, furthermore, in the artwork blood and a weird tissue can be see peaking out of his headgear and shoulders. This "corruption" may have lead him to the Painting, exactly like Priscilla, since, as we know from Eingy, the diseased are even threated worse than undeads and this says it all, really.

It took me a lot to write all of this, it's late and I'm tired, so there are probably going to be some typo, inconsistency or meaningless ramblings here and there, but I hope you'll would find it worth going through it and that maybe it'll offer a new point of view on some aspect of the lore that it was previously foggy.
