Another "My Kid is Playing Dark Souls" post

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 08:14 AM PST

My son is 7. He's had an interest in Dark Souls for a while, but I've always put him off - not because he can't handle the mechanics, but because I know stuff like inventory management, weapon upgrades and scaling will go completely over his head. But this weekend, he asked to play, and I thought, "Why not? He'll probably die 100 times to the Asylum Demon and lose interest."

He killed the Asylum Demon at the second attempt. In contrast (and bear in mind I'm terrible at video games) it took me about a dozen tries when I first started playing.

I wasn't even coaching him; I was in the other room. I asked him how he managed it, and he said, "I kept going around behind him and drinking my potions when I got hit."

He's in Firelink currently, trying to get up to the Burg and repeatedly falling off ledges. Fun to watch, but also kind of painful...

    This is my first playthrough.

I did not know she would limp and stumble on attacks.

    I am defeated.

Just SLAUGHTERED Manus after a long hiatus.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 07:52 PM PST

The first time I fought Manus, it took me a couple dozen tries and a lot of effort. That was the first time I ever beat Dark Souls, and I never got quite there again (always crapped out around the Catacombs because I fucking hate that place).

I got DS Remastered and did a quality build first, my favorite kind. Got through Anor Londo, beat Seath/4K/BoC and went to the DLC, like I like to do. Got through Artorias/Kalameet and just...petered out. Fighting Manus had been a grueling experience last time, and I hate the Catacombs/TotG, so I made new builds.

I spent a lot of hours on other builds. Got a sorceress to the same point as my quality, several others to the DLC, and a several more through Anor Londo, as the first half of the game is by far my favorite. But I never touched my quality build except to PvP in Oolacile Township for fun.

Tonight, I decided "fuck it, let's try Manus, it's been a while."

Behind my GS of Artorias, with my trusty Claymore in hand, I absolutely shredded Manus. It was still tough, and I was low on Estus by the end, but with a careful approach and a carefree attitude I dominated a boss that used to dominate me over and over. And after a long break from the character, too!

Just wanted to share a hardcore feel-good moment with this community. Trust in yourself, and don't go hollow!

Felt the need to apologise to all the veterans in this sub.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 09:05 AM PST

Picked all three Dark Souls games in the Halloween sale two weeks ago. I've been slowly making my way through the game, although I have no clue what I'm doing, using a dex build and the Uchigatana. I saw a post about how the Balder Side Sword was better than the Uchigatana, so I decided to go and grind for it. I play a lot of mmos and survival games, so grinding for an item with a 1% drop chance isn't that bad. I'd just finished putting in my Spotify playlist and settling in for the long haul when, much to my shock, the Balder Side Sword dropped from the first enemy I killed. This was with 0 humanity and without the ring to increase drop chance. After reading how much people suffered trying to get the weapon, I am filled with both pride and guilt.

    Third time's the charm

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 06:23 PM PST

So I've tried to play this game a couple times now. I was totally wrecked repeatedly the first time (as a hunter) and just switched to another game out of frustration for being so bad. Tried playing a second time a fee months later, this time as a thief. Always preferred speed builds in every other game, figured this would suit me pretty well. That was a hard no. Got through the first couple bosses before I hit a wall and continued to get wrecked again. Stopped playing once more and switched to Witcher. Trying again today, this time as a wanderer. Seems to be a solid dexterity build but a little sturdier than the thief. So far, so good. Hopefully this will be the round that will help me enjoy the game for once.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Demon's Greataxe... what WL does it have?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 02:07 AM PST

I think I fucked up... I wanted to stay at a normal weapon level and avoid picking up rare/high weapon level weapons. I got the Demon's Greataxe at SL 8... and now I'm seeing Gravelord summon signs pretty often. Despite that, I don't see the Demon's Greataxe listed as a unique/special weapon... does anyone know what WL it brings you to upon looting it?

Help me come up with some drinking game rules

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 12:57 PM PST

    Hi guys,

I've beaten the game 10 times over, was looking at having a bunch of mates over who know nothing about the game and making a drinking game out of it.

Some sort of rules I had so far: Pass the controller on death (I won't play) Drink if you die You can ask for a hint, but your next drink is doubled if you die If you kill a boss or make it to a bonfire, you earn one free controller pass Lose the teams souls, finish your drink

Anything else you guys can come up with to make it run smoothly?

Why doesn't the Dark Soul weaken with the flame?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 01:30 AM PST

So, when you see the origin of the Lord Souls you see them being pinched by the four important people. But more importantly you see that originally at least the Dark Soul looked exactly the same as the other Lord Souls, and seemed to share their properties of being glowing energy sources.

Fast forward a vague amount of time and the First Flame is running low on Gwyn juice and the Lord Souls seem to be following suite, all except the Dark souls which has been reportedly scattered among humanity as humanity and is now a viscous lump for some reason. Now that's all fine and dandy, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be weakening as the other Lord Souls are.

I understand that it probably changed a bit since the opening, what with it being sanity sludge as opposed to a magic spark of fire. In addition to probably being the source of power in the prospective Age of Dark; but it began as a Lord Soul

If it is supposed to ultimately draw its' power from the First Flame then why is it seemingly only getting stronger? Did something happen to it to make its' power source different from the other Lord Souls?

Any advice for a DEX/FAITH build? Ds1 PvE intended.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 01:06 AM PST

I started playing ds1 about 1 month ago and I am currently on my 3rd run. I already linked the fire with a STR/pyro pg and a pure sorcerer, now i want to cast some badass miracles and use (and buff) some dex weapons, do you have any suggestion? I want to do a divine, an occult and a "to buff" weapons. Any suggestion also for the miracles?

I missed an opportunity to save a dear friend...

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 09:20 AM PST

It happened so fast, his life slid through my fingers...

    My friend is no more...

Solaire is dead and gone and I feel as empty as one can possibly feel.

I was short of one Humanity for unlocking the shortcut and thought I could grab it from the Centepede Demon, but I forgot to turn it in after defeating it.

Solaire... If only I would have shined brigher, you wouldn't have needed this false sun!

I hate the Lord Soul areas so much that they are the reason I am not doing another run-through

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 10:43 PM PST

Seriously. The Lord Soul areas can fuck off. Everything else before was okay, to some extent. Sen's was frustrating, but fun in hindsight. Blighttown was...Blighttown. Depths was okay as I avoided getting cursed, Upper Burg and Parish are probably my favorite area in the early game. Anor Londo was beautiful and my favorite overall area. Painted World was...okay I guess, well designed but I skipped most of the puzzle stuff by hitting a jumping attack on the Wyvern, and then I just left Priscilla. But good fucking Lord (pun intended) I hate everything about the Lord Soul areas. Lost Izalith is a clusterfuck of bad ideas and the worst boss in the game, ToTG is just dark and confusing plus the Pinwheel clones can really fuck with you, New Londo is frustrating as all fuck because you keep having to apply Transistent Curses, or just waste your Soul of Sif and a +10 Greatsword on the Cursed Greatsword of Artorias. Ghost Blades suck dick. And the Duke's Archives, while cool-looking, have enemies with ridiculous poise. The little blighters need to be put down via Nuclear Bomb. Plus Seath's forced killing leads to a 40k+ bloodstain being lost for me. And invisible bridges? Fucking really? Who's idea was that? The Kiln of the First Flame is alright, I guess, Gwyn's a parry bitch and the game is over. But I will never forget the pain and suffering I have endured in those places. I really started to love this game around Anor Londo and definitely wanted to do an NG+ or Deprived run, but this shit broke me, man.

Did I accidentally cheapen the Manus fight?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 12:03 PM PST

I don't like using summons in fights since I'd prefer to play them solo, but I thought you had to use Sif in the fight with Manus in order to get her alternate cutscene. I didn't realize all you had to do was release her.

I summoned Sif and then beat Manus in my first attempt, though I'm not sure how much of that was because of Sif. Did I cheapen the experience/miss out on a hard but fun fight?

    Sif

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 09:44 PM PST

So I felt Sif was one of if not the easiest bosses in the game but I keep seeing him (her?) mentioned as a super frustrating near unbeatable boss. The first thing I tried was getting under its guard and it cant hit you there. I dunno, what made this boss hard for you if it was and why is it feared?

After Ornstein and smough, I feel a little lost.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 05:25 PM PST

After ornstein and smough I killed the puppy and now i am in the catacombs, near that coffin transport to the tomb of giants. Am I wasting my time there? I'm just unsure of what to do so i'm just going to new areas deeper in the catacombs.

So i guess im asking what have been your favorite ways to enjoy the game after beating it, or are there some fun builds i should try?

    Alternative for bloodborne/darksouls3?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 12:48 PM PST

Been playing bloodborne and dark souls 3, trying to find an alternative.. i feel like maybe dark souls 1 and 2 will feel old gameplay wise and have less players? Might not be so fun?
