    (When) Are Greatbows Beneficial?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 08:30 AM PST

I have been running a STR/VIT build and made it a decent way into the main story. At this point I am collecting Giant Souls to kill Vendrick. I always kept a regular bow in my back pocket and recently picked up enough DEX for a Greatbow.

I was excited to try carrying a Greatclub, Greatshield, and Greatbow all at once, but the Greatbow has been a huge disappointment so far. All it does is take longer to fire, cost more to reload, and not offer the cheese utility of poison.

When is it more beneficial to use a Greatbow instead of a normal bow? So far, it feels like a downgrade. Sure, the arrows do more damage and have more knockback. But that doesn't seem to make up for the expensive ammo, slow shots, and more susceptibility to getting stuck on invisible walls.

It doesn't help that Seabow scales with STR, and all the STR Greatbows are endgame superboss trophies.

Why is this game so hard?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 12:06 PM PST

At risk of being told to "git gud" I want to earnestly ask for advice. My roommate has the steel-book Dark Souls trilogy. 2 nights ago, I finished Dark Souls Remastered. Beat all the bosses, etc. That game was certainly not easy, died a hell of a lot, especially to bosses. Now I picked up Dark Souls 2, and I am finding it to be infinitely more frustrating and difficult. Not like the "ooo i almost had him" difficult, but the "what the fuck fuck you i hate this difficult". I was able to beat the Last Giant with the AI summon, but now from that bonfire I can barely make it to the Pursuer without dying. and if I do make it, the fight isn't any better. I only feel inclined to post because this isn't really how I felt playing dark souls remastered? do i need to adapt my gameplay? or is it overall just a harder experience?

I hate the path to smelter demon, I can’t bear it anymore. Sorry for these complaints, it’s just so annoying.

The hole in Majula, what is the best way to enter it?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 02:02 AM PST

First off: Assuming I just walk over the ledge and drop on the first planks.

The regular drop requires me to get around 1400 hp to survive.

Are there other ways to get to 1400 hp (other than leveling it) or to survive a regular drop off?

I am thinking about rings or other equipment, the cheaper the better.

Recently bought the game, excited to start.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 01:28 PM PST

This isn't my first souls game. I started with Bloodborne back when it released and loved the shit out of it. And several months ago I played through Dark Souls 1, and loved it as well. I understand some people aren't huge on Dark Souls 2 but from what I've seen I still think I'll enjoy it, and I'm very excited to get my butt kicked a lot.

I expect to be back here fairly soon begging for advice lmao.

I've beaten the game like 5 years ago and remember that happening but this time I've only seen him one time in the bonfire after the spitting statues

Dark Souls 2 wont let me summon

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 01:28 AM PST

So, I have seen this problem in quite a few Steam discussions but no one has found a way to fix it. It basically just started half a year ago, I was trying to summon a friend but he didn't see my summon sign and could not see mine either. Before we started These new Chars (Because I lost my old one that I used, fuck you Steamcloud, you didn't save anything!),everything was fine (That was a year ago). I haven't been banned and I tried everything to make it work. I dont know if there is something about regions (he is from scottland and I am from Germany) but it clearly worked before.

    Soul range

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 07:17 AM PST

So I seem to be seeing no summon signs what so ever on ps4 I only have a limited number of effigys but does soul range really screw you up that bad? I'm only lv 34 but I've had next to no contact with people which sucks because I love the online aspects of this series

PC version: Does parry timing vary with FPS differences across machines?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 06:35 PM PST

Played DS 1, then DS 3, now trying DS2 -- which, by the way, I bought just this past week for $9.99 old Steam sale from months ago that I found through a web search (through steam website, not the app) and the link was supposed to be expired but still active LOL.

On to topic. I get to the Pursuer, load up the Buckler as others advise (as it supposedly has most parry frames), but couldn't parry him to save my life, tried 100 times, only tried the rush attack that everyone says is so easy to parry, tried all kinds of timings. Researched DS 2 Pursuer parry timing advice, others said:

    - parry when he's at the end of his rush (before the swipe), or

    - parry as he begins to swipe, or

    - parry at the end of the swipe just before you get hit.

Then I saw others saying they were in my boat, e.g. "parry was always late no matter what timing". I realized my parries were all late. Even the ones I was trying mid-rush.

Some tries later my first success at parrying him was starting it at the VERY BEGINNING of his rush toward me. This is very much earlier than others said to parry.

Then I took stock: my PC is slow enough that I can't run DS games in online mode, "framerate too low for online play" would come up and it knocks me off to offline mode. (Fine, fuck invasions anyway.) Indeed on DS3 I would get really low FPS, with badly choppy play, including FPS of zero (frozen screen) for many seconds at a time, if I had a browser open at the same time as the game running. Yes, I lower all graphics settings to compensate as much as I can stand.

I'm now guessing that parry timing varies with framerate. Well, there already seems like wonky input timing in DS 2 compared to DS 3, much less smooth combat action in DS 2, and indeed it seems some imputs don't even register -- that alone has killed me alot in DS 2.

But, with a low FPS is it possible that the delay between hitting the action key and the action engaging is even slower? E.g., on a fast PC might parry timing be as others said -- near the end of his rush or even after his rush while swinging -- whereas parry on a slow PC has to be engaged earlier?

If you hit Maldron with a Loyd talisman just as he starts to run away would it ruin his healing or does he just keep using the flask till he is full?
