so i closed ds2 and opened call of duty mobile (emulator) to chill , got into a match and started sniping people.after a while i ran out of ammo and in my head i automatically said "my ammo is low, i need to find a bonfire now, wait.... what".

it kinda made me laugh a little.

Having "got gud" I still feel the placement of enemies in the Iron Keep was a bit poor/lazy

I think the archers are fine, they keep you moving, I think the sparkswords are fine, they guard. I just felt that they just gratuitously added things for no real reason. Any thoughts on this?

    DS2 Achievement-related questions

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 01:11 PM PST

I'm attempting to finish unlocking all of DS2's achievements, and have some questions that the wiki doesn't go into a lot of detail on...

    • Gathering of Exiles - can this still be achieved if Licia is dead? Does reviving her unlock the achievement? I don't mind doing this in NG++, but figured I'd try before starting fresh.

    • Smith for Life - is there a consensus on what you have to purchase/infuse for McDuff to award the Titanite Slab? I've seen 14,000 souls as a common threshold for unlocking the achievement.

    • Lucatiel and Benhart - I haven't talked to either of them so far in NG+ and Nashandra is the only boss left to kill. Can I talk with them at their locations and use ascetics to farm boss fights to unlock them? Or have I progressed too far in this NG cycle?

    • Tips for farming Sunlight Medals? My character is level 225 and SM tier 38 (between 7 and 9 million) so I don't expect a lot of co-op help.

    • Tips for completing the Bellkeeper covenant for Hidden Weapon? Mad Warrior doesn't seem super reliable in terms of invasions, which is frustrating.

    Thanks!

So I have recently gotten back to dark souls 2 to finish up and get all the trophies, so I am starting a new character to go and do everything. I was wondering what SM should i be to do sunbro medals and bell keep? Also I was wondering if the dragonrider twinblade is worth build a spellsword build around? I was thinking of doing a crypt blacksword build but the twinblade caught my eye and was wondering if its good?

    Thank You Dark Souls 2

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 12:43 PM PST

Some of you may know that I generally was shitting about DS2 in this sub. General stuff you all heard about already; shitty world design, shitty combat etc. But one thing this game taught me is so precious that I think anyone who likes Souls games and Souls PVP should play this game right now! The thing that game taught me is: not leveling endurance and vitality ever.

I was enjoying DS3 alot this summer and decided to make a entire series run and I decided to play DS1 again which I never finished, always dropped the game after Bell Gargoyles because I didn't knew that I had to look into Blighttown in order to progress but I was looking into New Londo all these time(English isn't my native tongue and it was worse back then which was about 3 or 4 years ago)... Then I finally figured out the game and finished it which was a very good game imo.

And I jumped into playing DS2 which was very enjoyable until I noticed the cracks in the pot. At first I didn't get why I wasn't enjoying as much as 3 years ago when I finished it first time and it was my first Souls game(at least the first one I finished) so it had a special place in my heart. Then I get why I didn't liked it now as much as before. Because most of the systems in DS3 and DS1 that I accustomed to were changed. Controls were weird, lock on wasn't working, hitboxes were inconsistent and enemy placements gave me straight up cancer. But it was mostly great until I reached the Drangleic Castle which is end of enjoyment imo. After Drangleic Castle everything went down parabolically imo.

But I noticed something very important. You see, I am always playing as a quality build in all these games in my first run, I never use a shield and use dual wielding if possible (Not possible for DS1 tough). So powerstancing weapons required so much investments into strength and stamina especially in early game that I was already investing into ADP for my rolling iframes. As game progressed I got better weapons with more requirements than before so I was constantly upgrading my vigor , str, dex and adp. And I was finally comforted with my build in very late game, it was an okay melee build. Then I looked into stamina and vitality and it was same way as I started the game and didn't even bothered to level it up after that because it gave me 2 more stamina points and 1 more equipment load for level which seemed like a joke when I could get more meaningful upgrades in other stats.

And after that I didn't made my any other build in any Souls game with more than 20 stamina and 10 vitality. Sure stamina is a nice thing for new players but it becomes meaningless after each playtrough. Same applies to Vitality when I can dual wield 2 UGS at the same time I dont even need a heavy armor or just an armor for that matter. And this is the best thing Dark Souls 2 taught me that I think I will keep this habit in Elden Ring or next Souls games FromSoft makes if Elden Ring is going to abandon stamina bar and equipment load system(Ehem... Sekiro).

    Bonfire ascetic in Black Gulch

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 08:38 AM PST

I need more titanite and I've exhausted all the mob spawns in Black Gulch. I've looked into bonfire ascetics and I know that the difficulty will carry over to ng+, but I've never actually used them to know what the difference is like.

Black Gulch is pretty horrible, but it's also short and not that hard if you go about it with patience. I thought this would be an okay area for farming and the difficulty spike wouldn't matter that much.

Figured I'd use it on the first bonfire, get the disgusting hand monsters back and giants on top.

This is my first playthrough. Would I be making a mistake?

    PVE weapons, advice and feelings?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 03:47 AM PST

    Hey boys!

To give you idea where I am at, I have very recently killed Rotten and Sinner, Just entered Hunstman copse and not gone past the teal sword boi that is blocked by stone girl.

At start I have been using a mace, as it deals insane damage to armored bosses, then I have wanted to ho for halberd, but that felt so clunky, I was unable to pull the weapon of at all. It felt too clunky, slow and the poke attack with shield up was always kinda tricky, so I have abandoned that as it did not suit me.
Now I have for clearing the world +8 bandit axe and +6 mace for armored bosses, sitting ready, but I feel like the axe also has it's limitation.

I would like to explore weapons a bit further, what are your favourite weapons? What weapon types do you use in what situations?

Remark: Yes I know, I can just google it and make my own judgement, but I like to read people's recommendations, maybe get some ideas. Sometimes wisdom of other people can influence you in a positive way.

Is my game bugged or am I missing something? Something weird with Doors of Pharros area.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 09:49 PM PST

Past the bonfire, all enemies I found were non-hostile, could not be locked-on to, attacking them didn't do any damage or aggro them either. If I remember correctly, there was supposed to be a scripted red phantom invasion too but no NPC invaded me. I haven't entered the boss room for the Royal Rat Vanguard so I don't know if the same thing is happening to it too.

I played DS2 years ago when it first came out on the PS3 and nothing like this ever happened. Is it something to do with SotFs or am I just completely overlooking something? I'm playing on PC btw.

    Killed Nashandra before Vendrick

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 06:21 PM PST

I was just wondering if I used a bonfire ascetic to respawn Throne Defender and Watcher would I be able to fight Aldia now? I killed Vendrick after beating both Throne Watcher and Defender as well as Nashandra but if i resummon them would it allow me to fight Aldia as well?

A few questions for making a "magic monk" build.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 11:29 PM PST

I want to make a playthrough where I build a character that fights primarily with fist weapons but also wields some manner of magic. But I'm unsure which options are better to pick between caestus or vanquisher's seal (prior to getting bone fist, of course), and which kind of magic to invest in and by how much?

    Paths to the boss

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 07:25 PM PST

Why are the paths to bosses in Dark Souls 2 so annoying?

I will give some examples: Lud and Zallen, Smelter Demon blue and red, The Rotten, Dark Lurker, Sir Alonne

You can rush in these paths (except Lud/Dark), but it's still hard, there's a chance you will die, especially SL1, getting discouraged.

I really wanna understand, what's the point?

I'd like ideas for some fun builds

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 03:14 PM PST

I played DS2 for the first time about a year ago and I absolutely hated it. I've figured that at least part of the reason was the build I used, and decided to give it a second chance. The first time I used the giant club until I got a drakekeeper's ultra great sword. Smashing people into the ground is fun, but it quickly lost its charm for me. I much prefer lighter, faster weapons to slow, smashy weapons. So with that in mind, can anyone suggest some fun builds for weapons that are at least faster than the Drakekeeper UGS (basically a regular great sword or faster). Also, I'm playing on the original version of the game and don't have the DLCs.

I wanted to love Dark Souls 2 SotfS the best out of the entire series, but a few things make it nigh impossible.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 08:36 PM PST

First of all, this game looks spectacular. Easily the best presentation in the souls series. Vibrant colors, fantastic texture-work on weapons and armor, the animations are very realistic (Ds1/Ds3 can look a bit floppy and rubbery to me at times). The attention to detail, like your character hunching and breathing heavily when low on health/stamina is also a very immersive detail. I have zero issue with the environments being themed like Super Mario, as it makes everything distinct (ds3 was a bit grey for my liking). I even love how all the interfaces look within the game, and how everything is 60fps.

The soundtrack is also the best of the series in my opinion. So dreamlike and eerie, especially Majula's theme and the title theme. It's wholly memorable. Same with boss themes. I've replayed Ds2 twice and the music has stuck with me way more than the themes of ds1 and 3, and I've played both of those each for like a thousand hours more than ds2.

My problem lies with the gameplay itself sadly. It feels good for the most part, but the game just hits you with infuriating gank squads a lot of the time. It's funny because I can play through the base game just fine, and I want to enjoy the DLC areas (as they are beautiful) but they're the worst offenders for onslaughts of enemies. I've seen people say the DLCs are the best areas of the game. Shulva and Brume Tower are just zero fun to wade through.

The other games of the series also have gank squads, but they're manageable. That's because... STAMINA. In ds2 the game gives you so little stamina (or rather, every little action expends too much) so a lot of the time, even with small weapons, any amount of enemies over 2 can stunlock your ass. It doesn't help that enemies are a lot more determined than in the other games, and will follow you TO THE FUCKING ENDS OF THE EARTH if you ever try to run past an area, until you get spitroasted by everyone.

As I said, this game does so many things so fucking great... better than the other games, but then the artificial difficulty is a smack in the face. It's the Silent Hill 4 of the Dark Souls series. Yknow it's got a perfect soundtrack, perfect atmosphere, a good story, and decent enemy design, but extremely clunky combat that brings everything down. In ds2, it feels like no weapons are really effective aside from the mace.

I'm going to be playing through it for a 3rd time, maybe getting better at it will make me enjoy it more. I love the mood and tone and music of this game, almost more than any other.

(ALSO im asking for gameplay recommendations that may make the ride smoother)

So I’m stuck toward the end of NG+

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 06:49 PM PST

In the location menu I have everything up though Black Gulch beaten and unlocked. I have the following souls: Covetous Demon, Mytha, Smelter Demon, Duke's Dear Freja, The Rotten, Old Dead One, Old Paledrake, Soul of a Giant. When I get to Drangleic Castle the lady tells me my "soul is still frail and pallid". I assume I need something else to proceed. Was there something in the area with the small enemies with the Gargoyles? I forgot what that place was or how to get there.

Edit: I just got the castle doors to open. Am I all set?
