Dark Souls Still hearing the bells ring

    Still hearing the bells ring

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 12:27 AM PDT

Played DS1 Remaster on PC tonight and was going through Undead Parish. Heard the bells ring 5+ times in my 1 hour session. I'm so glad people are still going through this game, 1st time or 10th time.

    Don't give up, skeletons.

Some thoughts on Dark Souls 1 and how it became my favorite souls game

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 05:58 AM PDT

As a preface, I've got into the Soulslike genre with Bloodborne and it quickly became one of the most memorable experiences of this generation, next came Dark Souls 3, which honestly was good, but not as great and rewarding as Bloodborne. So after finishing DS3 I was hesitant about picking other DS games. However I ended up buying and playing through DSR anyway and before even getting to Anor Londo this game topped Bloodborne and won other my heart! And here is why:

First, I find the evolution of From Soft games to be quite unusual, it seems that every later games removes more parts than it adds, and spends more time refining the parts that work. In that regard playing DSR felt more like playing a more rough experimental sequel to DS3, than vice versa. There were a lot of new elements like Humanity, Armor upgrade, Bonfire kindling as well as upgrading your weapon at any bonfire, and the game itselft felt more RPG-like.

Second, the game of the world just feel much bigger! I've heard a lot about the interconnected world, and while that was pleasant, getting beyond the edge of the world in Ash Lake, or visiting the Abyss twice has made the world much more believable and grandiose at the same time. Dark Souls 3 in comparison even with DLCs makes you think that you've barely scratched the surface. You fight the Abyss watchers, but there's like no explanation of what Abyss corruption should look like, and we don't even go through Abyss to demonstrate its danger. In DS1 in comparison we deal with all the elemental forces that form the world of Dark Souls, which makes a journey much more relevant. Which leads to:

Third, the feeling of being on a quest and/or journey is perfectly executed here, as well as the sense of progression. Most of this comes from the fact that the locations are much more diverse by themselves. While in DS3 you spend most the game fighting different hollows in different looking castles, in DS1 I can't even define the most common enemy, as every location has its own unique bestiary. Not only that, but almost every location contains a challenge of its own, with either traps, or places where you can fall of, or just being set in pitch black darkness. I know a lot of people hate places like New Londo, Tomb of the Giants or The Blighttown, but just having these kinds of locations in a single game enriches it immensely. I even liked Lost izalith because of that, yeah it looked rough and unfinished, but it did something really different from other locations: it led the player through vast brightly lit open areas, that thing alone added to diversity of gameplay and helped from making it feel like a chore. Also I was kinda lucky and have beaten The Bed of Chaos on my second try, so no suffering from unexpected falls.

Fourth, it made you feel things. Yeah, I sympathized with Anri and Siegmeyer especially, but all the bosses of DS3 were pretty neutral to me, they were pretty much just guys that have to be put down. In comparison in DS1 the tragic irony gets you early on: after just beating Quelaag and ringing the second bell, you feel like an accomplished hero and the next moment you meet The Fair Lady and immediately think "what have I done". I can't give much more examples now, but the game really made you understand that you're not the hero in this world, and not all of your actions are for the better good, even if you try to play your best role possible.

Fifth, the gameplay just felt more fair. Yes, the gameplay was refined in later games and some mobs behave to primitively, but damn DS3 felt at time that the player character was just too slow for the enemies he faces. In DS, as well as in Bloodborne, the enemies felt to be more in sync with the character speed, so although the game felt slower, the player didn't.

Favorite locations: Ashen Lake - just by the way it looks, how unobvious it was to get there, and the music. New Londo - for its dense atmosphere of horror, tragedy and dismay. Anor Londo - because it's goddamn Anor Londo, city of the Gods!

Favorite bosses: O&S - probably the biggest wall, that was in game in terms of progress. Also the first fight in game that taught me to abandon shield and accept the power of dual wielding. Manus - while Artorias the stamina slayer felt too much DS3 to my taste, Manus was a perfect combo of menacing, hard, unpredictable and fun.

Now to NG+ and setting up the Age of Dark!

Have You Ever Done Anything in Dark Souls That You Felt Really Guilty About?

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 06:59 AM PDT

Two things I did yesterday got me thinking about this:
    1) I invaded and killed someone right before Ornstein & Smough, and they were alone; no Solaire, no gank buddies, just one person trying their best to get to Smough & Ornstein, and I separated them from the sentinels and silver knight for a 1 v 1 duel. But still, I felt dirty winning that one. They were just one dude trying to get to O & S. I felt so bad that I put down my summon sign near where we dueled, and in a bizarre twist of karmic fate that same person I'd killed summoned me a minute or so later, and together we took down O & S. It was such a sweet relief to get rid of that guilt I was feeling!

    2) I killed Solaire yesterday. I wanted his armor set and shield; there is no forgiveness for killing the most optimistic/cheerful (at least before he...you know) character in the game, folks.

Obviously some of my guilt here is tongue in cheek, but I was wondering, is there anything in the Dark Souls games that you don't do because it makes you feel icky? I've never enjoyed invading, and there are definite characters I feel awful killing (Greirat, Yorshka, and Karla in DS3, Benhart in DS2, Solaire in DS) . Is there anything you avoid doing each run? Or characters you feel obligated to save every time?

    This game is a masterpiece

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 07:01 PM PDT

I know most people see that title and probably think something like "oh this again! Another dumb not-even-critic giving his two cents on Dark Souls." To which I say, you are completely correct in every sense of the word.

The game is amazing from a mechanics standpoint, all of the areas have a "vibe" to them, but that's not really the focus here, I'm trying to focus on the dlc.

All of the fights in this dlc feel like they in some way contribute to the setting and general plot. From the sanctuary guardian representing an epic fantasy monster, to Manus being the "Father of the Abyss". The dlc manages to feel like an entire short game on it's own with it's own characters and plot.

Finally finishing it a few weeks ago, I have to say this game has further proven itself in my eyes

Has anyone here gotten to soul level 709-713 without cheating?

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 08:22 AM PDT

Getting max level is a ridiculous undertaking, requiring over 1.7 billion souls, and the reward for doing so is minimal, almost nonexistent really, thanks to the decreasing returns each stat gives as they continue to increase. Still, I can't help but wonder: Has anyone done it legit? You know, just to say that they did it?

    I loved Manus' fight

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 10:31 PM PDT

It's beautiful, the attacks are evitabile (I beated him for the first time yesterday in NG+),I even avoided Dark Bead just with one roll! He has a very complete and cool moveset. The only thing I don't like about him is the soundtrack, I just think it's anonymous to the rest of the game. I couldn't avoid his vertical long hand attack 'cause I thought I was out of range. Anyway congrats to FromSoftware for this great boss fight! Praise the sun!

    Lightning Gargoyle Halberd?

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 07:07 AM PDT

So, my main weapon is my now +5 Black Knight Halberd, which I freaking love, but I also have a +10 Gargoyle Halberd that I also freaking love, and can now infuse with lightning, which has been recommended to me before. Just thought I'd get a second opinion... or two, before taking on Orstein and Smough.

To the invader who invaded us in the undead Parish

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 06:38 AM PDT

Me and my friend (J) were just waiting for a 3rd friend (S) to summon us. Our friend was playing for the first time ever and wanted our help playing through as hes only played 3.

Me and J decided to make new charcters for the fun of it. Wed been having a fun run through as well. J got the black knight Sword off the first Black knight in undead Barg and S had gotten both a Black knight Ultra Greatsword off the one in the tower before the pig and The greatsword off the steel knight in the Gargoyles cathedral both of which he offered to give me since him and J are both non strength builds but I'm a flippy big swing boi so they fit my build. We were having fun and such just 2 experienced bros teaching their friend the game (should go into detail of our first night and that choas in another post too)

Then J was invaded. I had my summon sign down for S and J was like I'm summoning you to help. That's when I saw you. You in just a havel chest wielding a stick. I came into this fight thinking oh he shouldn't be terrible even with us low level. Boy was I wrong. It wasn't fun at all. I got summoned and right as I'm able to move I see J get destroyed by your hails of black death and you didn't stop there. Right after you destroyed j you turned your attentions to me despite the fact the owner of the world was dead you decided to kill me anyways. You turned to me and my soft supple new charcter body couldn't stand more then 2 pumps from you stick of doom and I fell over defeated.

Once we were back in our worlds we were laughing about it saying stuff like "now we know theres a guy with end level gear invading in this area" and "I cant believe he killed us that quickly"

You sir defeated us fair and square and I tip my hat to you

How big of a deal is Artorias?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 10:00 AM PDT

I think Artorias is an awesome character. He's literally a legend (although you find out the truth about him in the DLC)

But how significant is he actually? I feel like Dark souls 1 mentions him a lot and even has a covenant based off of his deeds (the Abyss Walkers) but is he even remembered in the timeline of DS3? What other incredible feats did he complete before being corrupted by the Abyss?

Sorry this post is all over the place

Just started a playthrough, having an absolute blast. I have some noob questions for you souls veterans

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 07:09 PM PDT

I have a ton hours in dark souls 3, and I figured it was time for me to play the original. So I'm familiar with the souls series, but I have a lot of questions about DS1.

The upgrade system seems way more complicated than in DS3. I've checked the wiki for a few things, but even then it's still a bit of a mystery. I'm rocking a mage build as of right now. I picked up the claymore, as I figured it probably gets decent INT scaling once I figure out how to infuse it. So, I need to get it to +5 before I can get it to enchanted+1? Do I then need to upgrade it another 5 times before enchanted+2? What titanite do I need once I enchant it?

What are some cool mage weapons I can try out? Maybe weapons that have good INT scaling?

How do I use boss souls to create weapons? Again, I looked at the wiki for this one, but it seems heckin complicated. Like...I upgrade a normal weapon to +10, and then enchant it? And then use a boss soul to transform it into the boss soul weapon? And then sometimes you need 2 boss souls? It's a bit convoluted, and I'd appreciate a little clarification on this one.

Spells. I've watched playthroughs and gameplay of DS1, and I've seen people have a greater number of spell casts than I do. Like 35 or 40 soul arrows instead of 30. Is there a way to upgrade spells? Do I just buy multiple copies of spells for more usage?

Speaking of spells, what are some of the best staffs (staves?) Is there a "best" catalyst? I assume there are nuances with each staff, like staff X is best between 15-30 INT, staff Y is best between 40-60 INT, etc. What's the best "end game" 60int staff? Also, I was thinking it would be fun to try out some dark sorceries. Is there a staff that gets you bonus damage on dark sorceries? (like DS3's murky longstaff or izalith staff)

Quelaags sister. From the few playthrough I watches, it sounds like she opens some sort sort of shortcut for you if you give her enough humanities? Should I attempt to do this, or is it skipping a chunk of the game?

Thanks for the help! :) I appreciate any responses, don't feel obligated to answer every single question

    Drangleic Old Name

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 12:20 AM PDT

I bring a doubt that appears in the DS2, more specifically one of the phrases that says the character of Stone Trader Chloanne, which speaks of the old name that Drangleic territory had in its day, the phrase in question is:

" You know how they call this place Drangleic, right?
Well, in the old lore, in stories and the like, they said it had another name…
    What was it? Well… I don't know, it's just something I heard.
Since long, long ago, many kingdoms have risen and fallen on this very spot.
Each like a great flame, that turns to soot.
Maybe that's why people don't remember much about the past… ".

So I was wondering if anyone knows that old name that was lost in time.
