Not the game for me, but it was for him.

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 12:04 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'd like to start by saying that I appreciate you taking the time to read my oddly titled post.

March 25th of this year, I lost one of my best friends to suicide. Dark Souls was his favorite game series, and the one and only tattoo that he had was supposed to be the coiled sword. While the artist he had do it didn't do a very good job of representing this, he still adored the tattoo because he said that it was "one of a kind", even if it didn't look like the right sword.

A little background on myself, I've attempted to play several games in the series, but constantly find myself frustrated with the difficulty. (No h8 for being a casual, pls.) While video games were the glue that bonded my friend and I together in the first place, we had vastly different taste in games, with a shared love of fighting games. When he died, he actually left me his PS4 as well has his games, but despite my best efforts I've made little to no progress at grinding away at any of the Dark Souls games.

That being said, I've been saying for some time now that in his memory, I want to get a tattoo of the coiled sword. However, because of my limited knowledge of the games, I've come to you, my fellow redditors, for some advice.

I've thought a lot about getting a tattoo of the coiled sword, but if I were to do so, it would of course have to be the actual sword itself, as his tattoo was "one of a kind", Haha. So in regard to that, I have some questions as to what the sword itself is, in the series, I understand how the bonfires work, and the idea of getting a save point of sorts tattooed onto me sounds tempting, considering how badly I wish I could go back. But as far as the sword itself goes, outside of the bonfire, how does that fit into the game series? Could someone help explain the symbolism to me?

In addition to this, I've seen a number of tattoos of the "darksign" as well as the phrase "Don't you dare go hollow". This phrase, to someone who hasn't played much of the game series, had obvious implications. But what does it really mean, and how does it hold relation to the symbol?

Be easy on me guys, I recognize getting a tattoo for a game series I've never been very interested in might seem odd, but I want to get a tattoo in his memory, and I can think of no better way to honor our friendship than to get something from his favorite games. Thank you for your help.

Edit: I appreciate everyone's kind words and patience in explaining to me some of the lore behind the things I mentioned above. I will be going to get a consult for the tattoo tomorrow and will definitely post an update when I get the piece done. I haven't had time to really respond to any of these comments since I'm at work still, but plan on doing so later tonight. This really means a lot to me and I appreciate you guys helping me through this in a way. I believe I've settled on the sword in the bonfire, but having a better understanding of the game itself has definitely helped my confidence in this decision.

    Dark Souls Shower Thought

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 08:49 PM PDT

By killing / stealing from mimics, you can get:

    • A lightning spear
    • A crystal halberd
    • An occult club
    • An enchanted falchion

Why isn't there a mimic with a chaos weapon?

Thank you Reddit, for making the Belfry Gargoyles a cakewalk.

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 07:37 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

So I'm on my first playthrough of Dark Souls, and it's been a bitch so far. I couldn't beat the Taurus Demon, so when it threw me off a cliff it followed, and that's how I beat it. I missed out on the Drake Sword (got the Uchingatana though) and made it to the Undead Parish. Now I've heard how hard this fight is, what with it being two guys at the same time. So after killing the Titanite Demon, killing two black knights, a whole host of Hollows, and Lautrec(don't judge me, I don't want to wear shitty Undead armor just to Medroll), I put my Uchingatana at +5, went human, and summoned Solaire, as part of all the advice I had seen from other Redditors who were having trouble. Now I'm no expert at navigating the menus, and I didn't think to assign my Gold Pine Resin to the quick select menu. So while Solaire got the first gargoyle to about 3/4 health, I was figuring out how to equip the damn thing. I finally got it working and killed both the gargoyles in 3-4 hits. Then rang the bell, missed the ladder down, lost 11k souls, fought through the knight and hallows, and recovered them. Then I spoke to Oswald, walked back to Andre's bonfire, and now I'm on the quest to retrieve the Elite Knight armor. Thanks guys!

    Jolly cooperation?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 07:44 PM PDT

Hi all! I'm a brand new sunbro on PS4 looking for some adventurers who need a little jolly cooperation. The game population is a little low and my summon sign outside the Parish church (near the bridge to Andre) has been quiet for about three hours now. I'm on a quest to get ten sun medals so if you're heading to the gargoyles on PS4 and see a sign down for "Fatal Potatoes" please consider signing up for some jolly cooperation!

    Just beat 4 Kings SL5 / WL5

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 03:20 PM PDT

I wanted to try something different, and decided to make a low level invader build. But what started as a trolling build only further deepened my enjoyment of this game.

Going though Dark Souls as a low level, low damage build has been one of the most challenging gaming experiences I have ever experienced.

Each and every boss is suddenly more dangerous and threatening. Boss fights last so long that they use moves I have never seen before. Quelaag with a +5 claymore was challenge of endurance, rolling, and patience. Ornstein and Smough forced me to think outside the box, and I finally overcame them with Black Firebombs.

But for the past three days, I have been completely stuck on 4 Kings. My starting class was SL4 Bandit, but I put one point in DEX like a casual.

At these stats and WL, options are very limited. An SL5 Bandit does not even have attunement slots. And because I wanted to join the Darkwraiths, I couldn't grab Dusk's set because I hadn't placed the Lordvessel to go to the Duke's Archives. I was already wearing the ring of Favor of Protection and I ended up removing it just to try to adapt to this very difficult fight.

The leading approaches were * Dragon Form - I get no luck with the dragon eye * Giant Blacksmiths hammer - I almost grabbed it * Red Tearstone ring + Fast roll - At this SL one hit is fatal!

I tried many different strategies, and even got close a few times, but kept losing to the kings once all 4 would start swarming me. I must have died more than 100+ times, trying every variation of naked rolls, ring swapping, weapons I could use. At one point, I almost beat them with a +5 Longsword and Gold Pine Resin, but I was stabbed at the last minute by one of the swarming kings while healing, losing my chance as I ran out of resin.

I even went to fight the Stray Demon, and visit the Painted World just to change things up a bit.

But today, I finally defeated them.

My final winning strategy was 1) At the bonfire, equip Darkmoon Seance ring and Attune Power Within 2) Drop into the abyss, cast power within and ring swap Spell Stoneplate ring

My final setup was an then an over encumbered 59.0/54.0 (could not roll or run!) face tank. * Full Havel's Set * Spell Stoneplate Ring * Drake Sword (200 AR) * Crest Shield

Overcoming this fight was so difficult that I'm considering beating the game at this SL/WL, as I cannot think of anything more challenging than fighting the 4 kings at 67 damage a hit.

    Most enjoyable mod?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2019 01:48 AM PDT

Hey reddit, so I just got into the pc verse recently with my laptop (Samsung Odessey for those wondering) and was curious what some of y'all's favorite mods were for the game. Right now I'm using DSfix (of course imo) and an item randomizer, which has made this playthrough both insanely funny at times, and also extremely upsetting at others lol

So, made it to Ornstien and Smaugh....

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 06:59 PM PDT

And boy, was a make or break for Tim, and by that I mean break (rest in peace you magnificent Pyromancer you), but I'm not here to cry in frustration, I've moved past that and am now looking at a new character to work with.

What I want to mention is that I managed to defeat each of them ( but not both of them) and saw the different phases and I must say, Smaugh is a real piece of !%@#.

Like, Smaugh Dies and Ornstien be like "Rest in peace, I will finish this." Before getting super sized

But Smaugh, that load of jank just *&!#in smash him and be like "Thanks for the Lightning loser, now let me show you how to fucking eat scrubs for breakfast!"

    Like, dude...

anyways, off to my next character, hopefully I manage to nail it this time.

I've got the platinum trophy ma dudes

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 02:19 PM PDT

I just got the platinum trophy, and oh my god, what a game!

At the beginning I didnt like it compared to Bloodborne, but in the end, its definitely 10/10 for me. Absolutely phenomenal game.

I've completed the DLC too, and Artorias is my favourite boss, and the hardest one - but also in the top 5 - is Manus. I died to him more than anything in the game.

I'm playing DS2: Scholar of the First Sin some time in the future, but I'll play something else as a break from Bloodborne and Dark Souls.

    Praise the Sun!

Can anyone replicate this Kalameet one shot kill?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 11:48 AM PDT

    Hey sup

I've been trying to replicate this Kalameet one shot strat without any success. I'm wondering if I'm missing anything obvious? According to the author of the video, this is what he used:

99 strg 99 Intel, crystal demon greataxe +5, power within, Red tearstone ring (low HP), magic crystal weapon, tin crystal catalyst, dragon roar and fall attack :)

I've been using a similar build but I can only get ~2800 damage in one hit, nowhere near close the 8305 he gets in that video. I tried both walking off and jumping off the ledge, thinking I might get different results but I've never got any variation in my damage. Also tried to hit his head specifically, no difference.

    My build in detail:

    • 99 in all stats
    • Crystal Demon Greataxe +5
    • Tumble buffed with sunlight blade, using the darkmoon talisman
    • Power within
    • RTSR
    • Dragon Torso Buff with maxed covenant (80 dragon scales offered for covenant level at +3)

Is anyone capable of replicating this?

    My journey so far.

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 01:06 PM PDT

I had posted a couple of times a while back about my first ever Dark Souls journey. I try and play it with my 2 boys watching as often as I can, it's also the first thing they ask for when we get to my house. No films, no cartoons, just Dark Souls!

Anyways, i won't bore you with all the details, but i beat the Bell Gargoyles (found them very tricky), then onto Darkroot Garden and beat the Titanite Demon (fairly easy) and Moonlight Butterfly (impossible without Witch summon) then the Capra Demon (1st try, but only just) and Gaping Dragon in the depths. What a terrifyingly beautiful creature that is!

I'm following a guide and it mentioned going back to the Undead Asylum before Blighttown, so i went, and this is where i hit my first proper brickwall. That Stray Demon... Aaaargh i tried so many times but just couldn't beat him, so i decided to leave him for now and head to the Darkroot Basin.

The Knight was a little tougher than previous Knights but we beat him, then headed onto the Hydra. Jeez it was frustrating! The 4 Golems were straightforward, but gettin to the lake took me far too many times, those damn water jets!

We found a strategy that worked and the three of us eventually made it to the Hydra. Easy. Well, not really. We kept falling off the ledge to our death. We must have killed about 40-50 of those bloody Golems tonight, my eldest started to get a bit fed up with them!

Anyway, we got to the Hydra, stayed on the shore line and started lobbing off heads which was great fun. Once we whittled it down to 1 head we were hesitant about moving to hit it incase we fell again, so instead we started lobbing arrows at it until it died! Result.

Then round to fight the Golden Golem, save the spirit Lady from Oolacile(?) and decided to go and praise the sun with our good pal Solaire. (my youngest loves him and wants to be him!)

So that's where we are at. We're still having a blast but that might change if the Blighttown rumours are true!

I'm interested in buying DSR, but...

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 03:05 PM PDT

I was wondering if there are any areas with a lot of spiders in them. I know about quelaag, but she doesn't scare me much. It's more the smaller more realistic ones. I played through ds3 a lot, and I'm trying to beat ds2. But as I got to brightstone cove I realized I couldn't do it without a lot of mental work. I don't want to buy the game just to get stuck again. Thanks in advance!
