Dark Souls Dark Souls’ Strength is Gaming’s Weakness

Dark Souls’ Strength is Gaming’s Weakness

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 03:18 PM PDT

Dark Souls is a franchise that is near impossible not to respect regardless of your standing. Be it among the brigade of players on their 15th playthrough, or those of us who still struggle to get past the Asylum Demon. How does the title command such respect? By merely putting its gameplay experience first.

Dark Souls is, arguably, the quintessential example of a title centered around creating a gameplay experience with a defined, palatable vision. It's not trying to be the prettiest. It's not packed with the most features, and damn, It's certainly not trying to hand-hold its players through the first hour of the game.

While putting gameplay first sounds like the most straightforward and most logical thing to do when it comes to creating a fantastic gaming experience, time and time again, we see new titles that stun us visually, only to underwhelm us when we get down to the gameplay experience.

    Back to Basics

If someone mentions Dark Souls, that unforgiving, challenging gameplay is right at the forefront of what comes to mind. A system where the fun is in depth and the details. So many titles in more recent memory struggle to bring anything new within their niche.

Dark Souls holds up eight years later by delivering an experience that's increasingly hard to find. An experience where the progression is genuinely personal. Where the player needs to learn mechanics, not just how to grind out levels. Where death, more often than not, means YOU made a mistake, not that your level wasn't up to snuff. To many, it's a rather brutal concept. But the reality is it's a breath of fresh air in today's market.

If you've ever picked up a guitar, you'll know why this can be so satisfying. Hear me out here. If you've ever sat down to learn a song and instantly hit a wall, only to push against it again and again until you get it right, you know Dark Souls. That happiness of hard work paying off is really what makes the title, especially on a player's first playthrough, so incredibly rewarding.

Later, playthroughs are akin to making a classic song your own, to keep with the same analogy. You know what's coming, the foundations are the same, but it's what you do with it that makes it unique. Like adding your fills into riffs, new builds and ways to play are ten a penny in the best approach here.

    The Perfect Interpretation

Of course, there are a plethora of games that have been released in recent years that look to encapsulate that Dark Souls magic, as the term 'Souls-like' has begun to be coined. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and more recently Code Vein, have brought that magic and given it a new setting, with the latter diving into the realm of anime with its art style and themes.

While these titles hold their own very well, their most significant changes are also something that makes Dark Souls stand out. It's setting. Western fantasy is by no means anything new, but the take is refreshing. Gone are the cliches of Elves and Dwarfs. In their place are characters who let their personality define them and monsters straight from the gates of hell itself. Interactions are memorable and feel far more meaningful when compared to fantasy titles that throw characters in and out, as so many do.

    Trimming the fat

What Dark Souls does very well, remove the unnecessary. You're not going to find cookie-cutter items, generic spawns for the sake of spawns. There are a story and a purpose behind everything you see. NPC's aren't loaded with a heap of generic information that serves little in the way of intrigue. Instead, each character brings their own to the story.

The same goes for features within the game itself. There is nothing that's overly tacked on, that feels like a spare part. Even multiplayer and PvP feels integrated into what is overwise a very solo experience. The seamless nature of this integration helps to further that replayability I sung the praises of earlier.

In a time where loot boxes and cosmetics are an all too real plague upon almost every AAA title, going back to a title like Dark Souls with such a refined, limited palette is a genuine breath of fresh air. Less really is more, in this case.

    Gimmicks, Graphics, and the Grotesque

If more developers led by From Software's example, we'd be looking at a vastly different landscape in gaming. It's hard to escape the corner we are in, where AAA titles are locked in a rather unsustainable quest for visual perfection and the procurement of big-name cameos. We all loved E3 2019's lineup of celebrity appearances, but while the joy and the memes might last a week, Dark Souls is proof alone that a focus on gameplay lasts a lifetime.

You see, Dark Souls is to gameplay what the original Crysis was to graphics. The Benchmark. Crysis spent a good couple of years as the gold standard in video game graphics, and now today, you'll be hard-pressed to find a AAA title that isn't following in its footsteps when it comes to graphical fidelity. Sadly, we are yet to see a surge of titles all aiming to emulate the formulaic gameplay structure that has captivated fans of the Souls franchise.

I'm not going to sit and claim Dark Souls is the perfect game. It's far from it. Glitches and bugs do still occur, although not nearly to the extent that the title faced at launch. Even then, that's nothing out of the ordinary in today's market. Titles released without promised content — titles release with game-breaking bugs on day one. Dark Souls might share some of the problems with today's games, but it certainly does correctly enough to be forgiven.

    A Rest at the Bonfire

Dark Souls is, to many, that title that makes people throw controllers. To many more, it's a thrilling challenge that delivers frustration and happiness in a manner usually weighted towards the former. Dark Souls is, however, an old friend to a specific group of gamers. Those who've put themselves through the punishment and returned as the 'Souls universe's equivalent to Bane.

To everyone, Dark Souls should be seen as a benchmark for what to expect. A focus on player experience. A game that puts the knowledge of the player first, even when it means sacrificing additionals.

Dark Souls: The Gathering (part 2)

So a week ago or so I posted part 1 of an ongoing project of mine to make an MTG set based around Dark Souls.

Here is some more of it. The set is nowhere near complete, but this should give a better idea of what the set is like.

Thanks to Taograd359 for mentioning that chester could be considered a planeswalker, because it allowed me to branch out a little more.

Comments & Criticisms are more than welcome. Hope you like what you see.

I just beat Ornstein and Smough-But Kingseeker Frampt is gone

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 03:11 PM PDT

When I beat Quelaag, and rung the 2nd bell of awakening, I went straight to Sen's fortress and Anor Londo. Not knowing of Frampt's existence I beat everything up until u meet Gwynevere. I warped back to Firelink Shrine. I saw Frampt and went to talk to him, but I fell in, put the lord vessel in the firelink Alter(I knew what to do with the lord vessel but had no idea about snake Boi, not sure how that happened). I went back to talk to him, and he said "You poor fool. You cannot be the chosen undead" and just dipped. Like bro I literally did everything that makes me the chosen undead. Now I'm not sure what to do. Is there any way to get him back? Help!

What happens when we rest at bonfires?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 03:01 AM PDT

In a game so full of tightly knit lore for its mechanics, I can't help but wonder, why do enemies respawn when we rest at a bonfire? What's the lore reason for why the same exact enemies appear in the same exact locations? Is it something to do with what Solaire says about time and space being a mess? Any input would be appreciated

    Weapon upgrade chart questions

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 07:13 AM PDT

Please help me understand the details of the weapon stats screens and charts. I am near the end of NG+ and while I've been managing with experimentation and looking up individual things, I'm still confused about a couple details. I do understand the basics about how scaling works, the rating system A-E, etc.

Question 1: The damage stats represented by a weapon, does that account for the effects of character scale? That is to say, when I'm looking at my list of weapons, all of the damage numbers are true because it's taking into account my character?

Question 2: Sometimes I will look at a weapon upgrade/scale chart and one of the scale value will be red. I am not talking about required stat level, I understand that means that my stat is too low to weild it (like if my Str is 20 and it has a Str minimum at 24, it will be red, I get that). I mean the scale grade is red- like it will show Str scale C, Dex scale D, and D is red for some reason. Come to think of it also sometimes they are blue, but usually white. What is the significance of these colors.

Question 3: For those that played DS2, is it this complicated? I plan on playing it eventually but I will need a break in between Dark Souls to avoid frying my brain.

Dark souls remastered bow/crossbow ranking (my opinion)

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 05:38 PM PDT

    Rules:

1-this is my personal opinion. If you're upset with the bow that are down or high on the list, I'll explain why it's on this spot.

2-it includes every single bow and crossbow in the game. Also greatbows are included to the list.

3-what's your worst and best bow. Let me know in the comments.

for all the rules I mention let's get to the list

    10-sniper crossbow

IMO the sniper crossbow is how I best describe "underwhelming". I just don't like the fact you can only shoot slower than all the other crossbows in the game. This also don't help with it's poor performance in pvp. The players can simply walk to the side. And there for, the main reason why it's at number 10

    9-light crossbow

I'm not a big fan of most crossbows in the game. For most of the part, they cannot aim just like normal bows. So you have to lock on to use it effectively. Unfortunately the light crossbow was inferior compare to the heavy crossbow and even the avelyn. But at least it's not on last place mainly because you can use a fast draw animation as a advantage.

    8-short bow

It felt like the short bow is kinda underwhelming compare to other bows in the game. Since it's good for early on to the game,if you get the long bow, this means it was a quick replacement. And that's why it's on 8 on the list.

    7-heavy crossbow

Just like the light crossbow but slightly better. But still it requires more souls on bolts than arrows. Fortunately it deals a decent amount of damage, has a ok draw timing and it's easy to obtain. However it feels like it lacking something compare to the crossbow that is higher on the list.

    6-dragonslayer grt.bow

Comparing to the Gough bow and this, this great bow is okay. However it doesn't have a good strength as the Gough bow does. And it requires a good amount of souls to get great arrows. That's why it's number 6 on this list.

    5-long bow

This is your personal average bow to get in the game. This is a great replacement of the short bow, deals a good amount of damage, and it's easy to get in the game in dark root garden. I will prefer other bows over the long bow, but at least it's a decent bow to use.

    4-avelyn

Some of you guys will disagree my order on this one but this is the best crossbow in the game for me. Even tho it deals the lowest of all the crossbows,it makes up for the three round burst, high amount of damage in total, and decent in pvp. But they're two problems with the avelyn. The first one is the way you get it. I found out getting this crossbow is a pain mainly because you have to get the perfect timing to jump on top to the book shelf. That and it waste most bolts due to its three round burst.

    3-gough's grt.bow

This greatbow is a upgrade of the Dragonslayer great bow. It has higher strength value, deals overall more damage, and has more range compare to an average bow. This is a great bow to use no pun attended. However if you want to get this bow,you have to kill black dragon kalameet or kill hawk eye Gough to get it. Wich is a hard boss kill or a hard decision of killing a blacksmith that is giving you his arrows. That's the only knock down to this bow.

    2-black bow of pharis

This bow is amazing for poison arrows, feather arrows, and even large arrows. It also makes for it's highest Dex in the game averaging about S scaling. It also easy to get by simply kill pharis the Archer of the dark root forest clan. This is the best bow for Dex builders and I have fond memories using this to kill enemies that stay out of my reach like the hellkite dragon. But there's the bow that is better than the black bow of pharis.

    1-composite bow

This is basically what you take a great bow and put it in a bows body, and what does this blend to? A bow that have over 500+ damage with a red tearstone ring, mix it up with the power within and dragon torso stone, and you get a power House of bows for endgame. The composite bow short shot reach can be fix with the hawk ring and feather arrows. Finally, this bow gives me fun times of using this against blue Drake's in dragon valley. This makes me farm dragon scales much easier than melee. And that's why it's at the number one spot.

I hope you enjoy my bow ranking. Let me know what are the other dark souls remastered weapon I can rank. See you next time!

Is the oolacile dlc worth 15 dollars?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 07:30 PM PDT

    It has been CONQUERED!!!

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 07:56 AM PDT

I just got the Platinum for Dark Souls Remastered on PS4, and I wanted to share it with people who's response won't be ' So does that mean you're done yelling at the TV'. I would've posted a picture of the trophy but the Dark Souls Reddit doesn't like image posts. I had a soul level of 150 something (I think, once VIT, END, and DEX hit 60, 40, and 40 respectively I stopped paying attention), and it took a total of 111 hours of playtime. Thanks for the help some of you have given in the past, and for being such an incredibly, welcoming community, especially compared to other difficult games.

Some bosses are hard, and then there's Quelaag.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:24 AM PDT

I have a long history of finding the easier bosses difficult (the last giant in DS2, the Taurus Demon, the GAPING DRAGON*), but other bosses I have no trouble with. In my very first Dark Souls playthrough (which was 2 and Deprived lol) I took down the Pursuer on the first try. Seathe was such a quick fight for me it was disappointing. I don't know if he's supposed to be a difficult fight or if he's more like Nito.

    And then there's Quelaag.

In my first dark souls playthrough of 2, I got stuck on and quit on the Rotten. Then years later I bought DS1 for 360 without online play, and smashed myself against Quelaag at least thirty times before rage quitting the game until remastered came out. When it was new on the switch, there was no end to available summons to fight her. It was easy, and I was somewhere between angry and relieved. Angry that I had hit my head against a wall for so long just for it to end like that and relieved that I didn't have to fight her again.

It has been a year, and the available summons on DS:R Switch have slowed down dramatically.

For reference, I have no yet actually beaten any souls game. I'm still unfamiliar with most of the nuance to the game and builds. The character I have furthest along is a mix of faith, pyromancy, endurance, dex and strength. He's a bit hodge podge. I had been planning for my second character to be a dex build and learn how to parry. But... I'm having fun stabbing people with the tin catalyst... I don't play this game to be good at it.

So when I died fighting Quelaag because I couldn't get enough damage out on her, I had emotional rage flash backs to 2015 when I first played. I decided I would farm rats until I had way too much humanity, and then I would hope for the best. Of course, I had skipped the depths, had to run up, run down, beat the rats, beat the dragon thinking (hey I might as well go forward), decide Blighttown is WORSE than Quelaag, run BACK to Firelink shrine--

And realize I have a short bow. I have high dexterity. Several gaping dragons worth of souls, I summoned Mildred and slowly whittled her down with a short bow.

Years later I can still feel 2015 me raging against Quelaag and my own lack of damage output.

But now I have over a thousand heavy arrows and one soul of Quelaag that's absolutely going into a sword I will never use.

*Seriously. I have been ruthlessly picked on for the gaping dragon. "He follows a pattern" maYBE SO, but that first play through he seemed really rather random. As for the Taurus Demon, lol, it's easier for me to fight him like a normal mob rather than the plunge attack. He always gets me on the ladder.

[Spoiler] There is one odd thing about Big Hat Logan.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 04:00 PM PDT

When we find him hollowed, he is naked with the exception of his head. He still wears his hat.

Either he was very dedicated to his name even while going hollow, or someone pulled a prank on him and glued his hat to his head.
