    I just realized something

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 12:18 AM PDT

of all the great bosses, cool and funny weapons, and adventures full of danger and treasure, the thing I most enjoyed in DS2 was always Majura.

It's just so calm and relaxing, man. I've never seen this perfect little town to get mentally (and physically) ready before starting another rough journey in any other video game. I will always remember DS2 as giving you the most relaxing times of all the action adventure genre.

The Pilgrims and The Sacred Dark (DS3 spoilers)

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 06:48 PM PDT

The Dark, perhaps one of the most discussed things in the Dark Souls series both by the game's fandom, and it's own universe. And Dark Souls 2 I feel, really shed some light on the Dark so to speak. To be clear, this isn't a post on the Dark as a whole per say, but of the Pilgrims of the Dark quest, which has a lot to do with the Dark. Before I begin, I'll cover some personal aspects of the Dark that are relevant to this topic, these are my own personal interpretations on what the Dark is relative to discussion.

    • The Dark is not The Abyss of The Deep, both of which are corruptions, much like the Chaos Flame is to the First Flame
    • Due to the lack of knowledge of the Dark the above fact is not known by many in-universe with the exception of hexers.
    • Despite that, hexers might use the term The Dark and The Abyss interchangeably, most likely out of ignorance for what The Abyss really identifies. What makes it known that they are referring to The Dark, is that they describe it in positive manners like warm and tranquil, while also being respectful towards it. They might not known The Abyss by its name, but they know it's dangerous and comes from a mishandling of Dark.
    • The Dark is peaceful, still, tranquil state of the world, as opposed to Fire, which gives rise to the vibrancy of life, but one can't truly exist without the other.

Now that we have all that out of the way, the basis of the post (and the very title), arouse from a curious line from Darkdiver Grandahl. After clearing the first Dark Chasm of Old, and speaking with him, he mentions how

"You have seen Dark that existed from times long past. What was once a great void of darkness became but fragments. But slowly, the scattered fragments grew, absorbing all things. It is we who will be pilgrims to these sacred sites."

Before we dive into that though, let's back up just a moment and give some context. Darkdiver Grandahl leads a covenant known as the Pilgrims of Dark. As a pilgrim, you offer a Human Effigy to explore the Dark Chasms of Old with the objective of killing black phantoms and, perhaps more oddly, lighting large torches. And only after doing these things do you succeed and rise up a rank in the covenant.

Now back to the quote at hand. Perhaps the first thing that came to your mind concerning it was its similarities to King Vendrick's description of the Children of Dark

The Abyss once had form, but dissipated. And yet, traces of its existence endured. Each fragment, thirsting for power, spread Dark, with no relent.

Seems like an open and shut case. The Dark Chasm of Old is just a remnant of The Abyss, and as a Pilgrim of the Dark, you are encouraging the Abyss to spread. But wait, what was it that you do as a Pilgrim of Dark exactly? Kill Black Phantoms and light massive fires. How do either of these things encourage the spread of The Abyss? Simple, they don't.

What exactly are these Black Phantoms, and what is the purpose behind the fires? Let's start with the black phantoms, because the answer here is easily found in the musings of a hexer, not Grandahl, but Felkin the Outcast. Odds are if you're doing the Pilgrims of the Dark, you've got an interest in hexes or have even made a hex build (or are just trophy hunting), regardless, you'll come to know Felkin another hexer. As a hexer, much like Grandahl, he speaks of the tranquility and warmth of the Dark, but with his adoration, he also gives a stern warning

Those who discover Dark...realize this [referring to the tranquility and warmth of The Dark]...And...they never come back.

The Dark is intoxicating to humanity, not only is it in some extent natural to us, but it's also comforting in a world devoid of that when the curse arrives. But what'd so bad about that? Well if you aggro Felkin he says

    you've let Dark... take control.

Like anything, The Dark can become dangerous if not done in moderation, warping people and itself into some chaotic, in other words, something like The Abyss or The Deep. Do you see now? Black Phantoms are those who've become overwhelmed by The Dark, twisting something that should be sacred into something not. And as Pilgrim, you are to cleanse these sites, to make The Dark pure once more.

But what about the fires? What purpose do they serve? It's certainly something important, as you can't leave the Chasm until you've killed the corrupt phantoms and light them. And when you've done this for each site, you fight a being known as The Darklurker.

The Darklurker is perhaps one of the most, if not the mysterious being in the Souls universe (though that's partially thanks to it never being brought up in DS3). An being that would be considered angelic in appearance, with even a soul of Light to boot, this is the boss of this covenant, and you're last trial as a Pilgrim of Dark. Let's take a look back at that soul again, it is Light, yet surrounded by the Dark and The Abyss. For comparison, Velstadt could not keep his soul Light in the Undead Crypt, a place of perhaps minuscule Dark by comparison. What this means is that Darklurker has to be more than human, and tied to the Light, for it is in fact, a being of Light.

What can be said of beings of Light is unfortunately all speculative, as nothing is really known about them beyond theory, but if there's Light and Dark in the Souls universe, and Pygmies are beings of Dark, then beings of Light must exist as well. How it got down in the Dark Chasm of Old is irrelevant to this discussion, what's important though, is that it's presence disrupts the Dark, and you drawn it out by lighting fires before putting it to rest. Again, unfortunately this is all highly speculative, but that's also what makes it fun in a way.

So why do all this as a Pilgrim? Why purify The Dark? Grandahl himself tells you

Young undead, you've discovered the truest Dark within you. A deep, deep Dark it is. The Dark that we must all face. We need the Abyss, more now than ever.

Grandahl himself knows a constant Age of Fire, born from centuries or perhaps eons of paranoia against The Dark from Gwyn and his followers, can't be sustained. And as DS3 shows, he's right. Even if you light the flame, it's a weak flame. In fact, the best ending is perhaps when you finally usher in an Age of Dark, letting the world sleep and the Flame finally rest for a moment.

As a Pilgrim, it becomes clear that your purpose is to cleanse The Dark of those who twist it and of beings that don't belong in it, all the while showing The Dark, much like The Flame, is sacred and should not be feared, but respected and accepted by humanity.

If you actually read this far, thank you, and to reward you, I'll finally scratch that itch I might've dropped a while back ago. It was concerning Vendrick's quote, and more importantly, my implications that he's wrong in his association with The Abyss spreading The Dark. To put it simply, Vendrick is a man who wants a way out of the cycle. He sees the flame as facade humans are a part of and The Dark as the chains that bind us to that facade. While he might see the difference between The Abyss and The Dark, even as a man who studied it so deeply with his brother Aldia, that difference is irrelevant to him. Whether it's The Dark or The Abyss, it's still something that binds humanity in one way or another to him.

But what about the Pygmy comment? Well to leave no stone un-turned and to try and wrap things up nicely (or at least as nicely as I can because again, Pymgy lore is very speculative), Pygmies have the true Dark within them, and while humans posses the Dark Soul, the fact that there's a distinction between humans and pygmies shows the human dark might not be as strong as the Pygmies so to speak. Strong enough to create hexes and wield The Dark sure, but not strong enough to seemingly resist Gwyn linking them to The Fire. But I've all ready said enough for now. This was meant to just cover the Pilgrims of Dark and yet much like the world of Dark Souls itself, everything is connected and collapses into itself, so I'll stop here.

Is there a Bonfire near Elena?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 09:51 AM PDT

So I'm just wondering if there is a Bonfire near her, because the way from the first bonfire (in the sunken King DLC) is rather long and exhausting.

    Fume knight

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 05:30 AM PDT

I'm on this guy now died about 15 times last night and gonna try again after work. He's pretty fun but honestly his hit boxes are kind of bullshit. I've died to things I shouldn't have over half the time fighting him. Either he for some reason ignores iframes or he had hit boxes that don't make sense. For instance he does a jab and I'm on the side of him completely away from his Arm and sword but I still get hit by "something". Idk he's fun I like the fight but it doesn't feel fair lol

    I'm not crazy right?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 10:26 AM PDT

I spent years hearing people complain about DS2, but never played it for myself. I picked up SOTFS for the Xbone and I am flabbergasted at this mess. The first few areas were challenging, but fun. As I'm progressing through the game though the fun is long past dead.

I'm in the Iron Keep now, and what the fuck? Archers, lava pits, katana wielding knights that can see you from miles away and sprint like Usain Bolt?

I'm trying to reignite the fun here, but this enemy placement is insane. I'm reminded of Bloodborne, and the large number of enemies roaming around the first area. Sure, large groups can be tricky, but you can easily isolate them, take them on at reasonable odds.

With the aggro range of these enemies it's borderline impossible to isolate them. If you know of Eli behind the PlagueOfGripes youtube channel, he did a playthough of DS1 with a mod that extended the aggro range of every enemy. DS2 feels like that mod is in the base game.

But, I know there were changes made with SOTFS, was base game DS2 this bad? Am I crazy?

Thank you for letting me rant, praise the fucking sun brothers

    Cheating on ps4?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 06:31 AM PDT

So I just summoned this guy in Forest of fallen giants at 30k sm. He dropped me the ring you get for a no death run, fully upgraded ivory king armor and some weapons. He even dropped the longsword and murakumo reskins that were only available in vanilla. So how the hell could he do that? Is it cheating or some agape ring bullshit?

    Dark Weapon Enchant build?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 07:46 AM PDT

I've seen people nuke bosses with a dark enchanting rapier and the dark enchanted red iron twin blade( both spell and infusions) and would like to know where I should put my points in order to be on easy mode too. Is 30 faith/int enough for a dex build and if so should I use both spell and infusion or just the spell?

    Burnt Ivory King glitch

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 03:49 PM PDT

So I was farming souls as a sunbro in Loyce Cathedral. Me and the host fight our way through the initial wave of knights then Ivory King appears.

And this is where the glitch happens. He attacks a few times then charges at me to the first frozen gate on the right side of the arena. I roll to avoid his attack and he just stops and stands still. I attack him and he continues to just stand still. Me and the host beat his ass while he just stands there, not moving, not attacking. No animations either.

Easy kill but a bit unsatisfying considering me and this guy had been trying several times to kill the boss with only 1 Loyce knight.

Has anyone else encountered this before? Any thoughts on why it happened?

    Help pls

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 10:11 PM PDT

I still consider myself a noob to DS2, have a character thats lvl 86 but I feel as if I mindlessly fucked it up and am now restarting again. I got thru the Sinner and the Rotten, but I am not content with the character at all for whatever reason. I just need help getting started and what I should do/get as I progress back to the Great Souls. Any advice/tips will very likely help. Thanks!
