I wish this game didn't have a reputation of being extremely hard.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 08:17 AM PDT

I first tried Dark Souls about two years ago and returned it after playing for two days. Over the past two months, I have beat every Soulsborne game and some other soulslike games.

It's reputation scares so many people away from the series and I really don't like that. I didn't expect a series like this to have SO much in common with Zelda and Metroidvanias, my two favorite things to play.

From Software has a serious talent when it comes to enemy design, world design, and just game design in general. And people are missing out on the experience because "Dark Soul hard".

I guarentee that any Zelda fans that are afraid of this series would absolutely fall in love with it, and I think a lot of people in general would if they gave it a chance.

Now I definitely understand that it isn't for some people, but there is probably a good chunk of players out there who are seriously missing out on something they would probably enjoy.

Edit: I didn't expect so many comments on this post! It seems everyone is fairly split on it. Some saying the reputation is what pulled them in, and others saying it's what prevented them from playing it in the first place. I think we can all agree that this series is something special that a lot of people should at least give a try!

An essay I made for a friend who may try Dark Souls

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 11:20 PM PDT

I wanted to share something I wrote for my friend. He hasn't ever played a Souls game, but it's unlikely he won't ever try them. I wanted to try and write something to convince him to give it a chance, so I left out some spoilers that most of us would know already. Let me know what you think!

There are many who still fondly remember Dark Souls, and they would be able to tell you about how it was a fun game that it was. But I appeal to you to visit Reddit and look at the subreddit for Dark Souls. You can visit it as r/DarkSouls. It has 275 thousand members. Compare this to other subreddits for popular current games. Call of Duty has 175 thousand. Battlefield has 200 thousand. Borderlands has 267 thousand. Mortal Kombat has 150 thousand. I don't know if you can pick up on it yet, but let me explain why I listed those numbers out for you. Dark Souls, which is eight years old, has a more loyal subreddit than the most famous game franchises, all of which have put out installments this year. And this is evidence for my first claim, which is that Dark Souls has the most loyal player base of any other video game.

The Dark Souls player base is an enigma wrapped up in an oxymoron. If you look at the "Hot" page, which is the most upvoted posts recently, it will be filled with people giving endless congratulations for new players finally beating difficult bosses or areas. But at the same time, if you look for people asking for help or tips the only response they will get is, "GIT GUD!" In fact, this answer is so common that I have a sticker of it on my water bottle. The reason is that the players want to build you up and congratulate players as much as possible, while at the same time tearing them down and making them feel like crap. The reason being, these are the exact tactics used by the game.

Dark Souls game design is created to bring two categories of feelings, and these are pleasure and pain. Moments of pleasure are achieved after defeating bosses, areas or just lighting a bonfire. There are few sounds more comforting than that of the iconic bonfire being lit. But far more often, the feelings of pain are used by the game. These are when a group of enemies circle around and kill you, you fall off an edge, or you lose all of your souls you worked so hard to get. This is all the more reinforced by the sound and message given after every single death, with the iconic, "YOU DIED"appearing. And you may wonder why a game would possibly want to tear down the player, but the answer is simple. The night is darkest just before the dawn. Only after being torn down can you be built up. The greatest trials make the greatest victories. The game ingeniously destroys the player in every area and boss, only to build them up and produce the greatest sense of achievement that any video game can offer. And it is this that pushes the player base to become more than fellow gamers, but to be comrades.

Consider that suffering builds comradery. If you have to go through one of the most difficult trials imaginable, but you find others who have been through the same trials, you will have a special bond with them. There are feelings of pain that are difficult to understand, but others who had to slog through them can sympathise. Consider the trek from Sen's Fortress to the Lord Vessel. There are few death marches more severe in gaming than that, and yet almost everybody who has beat the game thinks back on it fondly. This is a sentiment that only fellow Dark Souls players understand, which makes the bond between them so strong.

For my second point about why Dark Souls is a game that should still be experienced, I want to discuss how well it has aged in comparison to other classic games. Consider Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64. The controller doesn't lend itself well for a FPS and the low quality graphics make shooting enemies far away impossible. To quote YouTuber Videogamedunkey, "This game has been objectively obliterated by the passage of time." Games like Modern Warfare 2 have improved on controls, graphics, options for weapons to use, level design, music, story, and everything else. The quintessential shooter is no longer Goldeneye, because it has been outdone so many times over at this point. Half Life 2, DOOM, MW2, Bioshock, Borderlands 2, and the Halo series have all made it a dinosaur in comparison. But there are many things about Dark Souls that have stood the test of time and haven't been close to being topped. The only games that could rival Dark Souls are those made by FromSoft, which is a testament to how amazing their games are, each in their own right. But there are aspects of Dark Souls that have not been outdone by even FromSoft.

The first of these is how deep the lore of the game is, and how it is affected by the most miniscule things. Take one miniscule symbol for example, the Chloranthy Ring. YouTuber Hawkshaw spends thirty minutes talking about the importance of the flower image on the ring, and how it proves the existence of a character that is never named or mentioned in the entire game, and which weapons, rings and armor sets are of his design. The painstaking attention to detail for every area, boss and item is incredible and unmatched. But of course, this is only something that makes a good game even better, so let's talk about the combat.

Fighting and combat in an action RPG is what will draw a person to any game, but it's the additional things that will keep them playing. Take the difference between DOOM and Wolfenstein The New Colossus. Wolfenstein has great shooting mechanics, really good graphics and nice level design, but it feels flat and same-y in comparison to all of the other FPS games on the market. DOOM on the other hand is a breath of fresh air, with great and unique enemy design, a thunderous soundtrack and amazing gameplay. Dark Souls is more like DOOM than Wolfenstein.

When playing Dark Souls, there is an undeniable weight to the player and enemies attacks. Take the Black Knight, whose greatsword takes an eternity to lift, but comes crashing down with great force. Few other games provide similar feelings of legitimacy to combat. It surely feels good, but it is also very difficult to master. At starting level, there are enemies that will prove a threat to you, undoubtedly. There are some enemies that you stand no chance of defeating at the beginning of the game. This is because they are designed for when you master combat, and being able to defeat enemies that slaughtered you before is incredibly rewarding. On top of that, flying through areas that first were death marches is incredibly satisfying, and something that no other game can better provide.

There is so much to this game. So much to love, so much to hate. Even it's biggest fans admit that certain bosses, enemies and areas are far inferior to others, but even Dark Souls' biggest detractors admit that it is unlike any other game they've played, for better or for worse. Words can only try to describe what feelings this game has brought me, and I hope that mine were adequate. Good luck, and don't you dare go hollow.

    HELP PLEASE

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 04:17 AM PDT

SO I purchased dark souls remastered, I am new to the genre, I have never played a souls game ever. So after taking advice from my pals and looking at some guides I started the game everything was going well.

Picked warrior, chose a dex playstyle. Died like 3000 times ( actually threw my controller away when I lost 13 humanity and 20,000 soul, it was soul of a hero i found)

    So everything was FINE!

I killed quelaag demon and then headed to sens fortresss. Now here my dog decided to chew on my controller when I was at the bridge bonfire. And I accidently hit Andre of astoria by a fireball and he immediately got hostile.

Please help he's dead I don't wanna mess up my game is there a way to do something? Can I go back in my save file? I immediately quit the game and logged back in with my account and still he was hostile.

    HELP.

    Stuck forever in the Catacombs?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:17 AM PDT

So, I just went into NG+2 to get my final weapons for the Knight's Honor achievement, and my first stop was Paladin Leeroy. Now, I rested at the Patches bonfire. Before I found out that there's a yellow mist blocking my path to Leeroy. Alas, I thought, let's go back up. After a few dozen attempts to go by the wheel skeletons I'm finally past them, and now I've come to a major issue: I never took down the spikes to this one bridge, because I took the shortcut down to Pinwheel. This blocks my path, and I can't find any other ways to get out. Am I stuck forever? Is my 200+ hour character now rendered completely unplayable?..

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 11:08 PM PDT

I lost two humaninty in New Londo getting the fire keeper's soul, so I decided to hit the Undead Burg to nab at least one back. But then ended up taking on Havel and no-deathing him, and on my way back decided to knock out the black knight because he was still there. Ended up knocking him out also no deaths. But funny enough, didn't get a single humanity, but to be honest, I'm content with the haul.

Hey all! I just finished my first ever play through of a FromSoftware game!

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 04:05 PM PDT

I bought a PS4 last week and with it, I purchased the Dark Souls Trilogy and Bloodborne! I have never played a FromSoftware game before, let alone a console. I decided to get a PS4 so I could mainly play Bloodborne since it is exclusive, but I decided to get the Dark Souls games with it because of how well received they are. So after 3 days, I finally finished Dark Souls Remastered, the first of the 4, so now I am moving onto Dark Souls II! And yes, I finished the Artorias DLC, and yes it was a completely blind play through, it was great! Any tips for Dark Souls II?

I have just completed my first ever play through of Dark souls (1) remastered! 22 hours (I think that's good?) I have completed all souls games except demon souls now.

    Bring on the remaster!

Side note: I was reading online (this was not a FULLY blind playthrough) that Anor Londo was considered half way through to game. But after that all the areas seemed tiny and easy to complete (fully upgraded manserpent greatsword ftw) maybe 4-5 hours tops. Something must have clicked.

Vicariously relive your first Dark Souls experience

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 11:30 AM PDT

I really hope this doesn't violate any rules, as that is not my intent.

Anyway, after hearing that experienced players like to watch first-timers, I decided to stream my adventure (Remastered version on the Switch) and make videos featuring select moments from each stream. I'm what you would call a "filthy casual". I don't play games for any sense of accomplishment. For me it's all about relaxing, and you'll probably pick that up by the way I speak. I don't ever get loud that much, but trust me: I'm enjoying myself. Especially with this game.

That said, I didn't know a damn thing about this game except that it's regarded for how difficult and unforgiving it is, and it shows. This is what happens when someone plays Dark Souls for the first time ever (real gameplay starts at 1:45):

    https://youtu.be/hWraW79IvsI

Early on I talked about how I probably wouldn't play this or any other Souls game (not sure if that's in any of the videos), but I have since changed my mind. This is rapidly becoming one of my favorite games ever, and I'm seriously considering playing 2 and 3 as well. I can't believe what I've been missing out on all these years. Maybe I'll even play Bloodborne at some point.

Part 2 of my series has been published as well if you enjoyed this one, and there will be new parts every six days until I finish (two Lord Souls to go) but I'm not going to plug the whole series because this first episode gives the best taste of a completely blind playthrough.

Advantages to DS1 or DS:R on PC vs x360/xone?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 08:09 PM PDT

    Hi there,

I have played the original dark souls on Xbox 360 a TONNN and DS:R on Xbox one a lot too.

I now have a gaming computer. I went back and played DS3 and loved getting 60fps instead of the 30fps cap on Xbox one.

My question is, if I've played DS:R on Xbox one, is there any performance advantage to playing on pc? I know the souls games are supposedly capped at 60fps so I know my 144hz monitor won't do any good.

    Thanks in advance.

If somebody can please donate it to me, I will be extremely grateful and I will give that person 50 Titanite Slabs plus 10 Ornstein Souls (I am not lying I actually have that many). My username is MolotovCTR and I will be waiting in Darkroot Forest. If you will give it to me, type down your username in the comments so will know that it is you, Thank you.

Should I try Dark Souls I (remastered) or III?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 01:05 PM PDT

I have a loooong history of intensely disliking the soulsborne games. Playing Bloodborne 4 years ago was maybe one of my least pleasant gaming experiences ever, 8 hours of total frustration and anger. Saying i hated it would be an understatement. However, I recently played Astral Chain, and it became one of my favorite games ever. I loved how difficult it got, how punishing it was, and how i felt after beating these crazy bosses. I loved utilizing new weapons (legions) and customizing them to fit my playstyle. Many people have suggested that I may enjoy DS if I give it a shot, and it's cheap enough that I'm willing to. My tastes may have changed, who knows. Anyway, would DS1 (I'd get the remastered one) or DS III be a better choice to start with? I know people didn't love 2.

I've got a switch, ps4, and PC. Looks like i can get a used PS4 version of DSIII for $15, and a used ps4 version of DSR for $17. Not a huge difference so I'm open to either. Thanks!

Edit: ended up getting III, got the GOTY edition. Thanks!

Dark Souls Remastered 1st Playthrough - part. 3

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 10:44 AM PDT

DISCLAIMER: I DONT KNOW HOW TO BLOG. So the other perviouse posts dont have the same title. I keep reposting my original post and categorizing by dates in the body. Please let me know if I should be doing it differently. Enjoy!

This is the 1st time that I am playing any of the DSs.

Ive had a PS4 Pro for couple of years now. I never used it until recently. I decided to start DS. I would like to finish all 3 games solo. I currently play offline as I dont use PS+.

I started as a Warrior for the 1st 15 minutes than I started reading online and decided to go with a Pyromancer so I restarted the game.

I have read alot of wiki so some of my decisions were predetermined based on my readings.

I will be on here posting as I progress through DS1 Remastered.

    Afew points

    1. Most likely will have one walkthrough as I power my way to DS3.
    2. I have read alot of wiki but not any walkthroughs or guides.
    3. I am not a gamer. I played League of Legends for years, but only that. This is the first time I have ever gotten so into a game. I started with an Atari in the late 80's but I have never played RPGs mostly sports, racing, and maybe shooters. I feel like a nerd but kinda enjoying this

    My plan is to

    1. Beat the game offline.
    2. Put all my souls in Dexterity, Attunement, Vitality, and endurance in that order.
    3. Wield Chaos Blade
    4. Join Chaos Covenant

    Progress:

    24/09/2019

    1. I did get black bombs and killed the Asylum Boss at 1st encounter. I did get his weapon not knowing that I wont be able to use it for a while.

    2. I fought the Crestfallen Warrior because I didnt like the cut of his jib and how he talked to me. He kicked my ass and kept respawning at the bonfire with him there attacking me. This happened about 5 times and as I was figuring how to fight him, he dissapeared! He is not there anymore.

    3. I found Petrus of Thorolund. He offered me to join the Covenant Way of White. I said no because I didnt know anything about Covenant.

    4. I did buy a key, bottomless box, and repairbox from Undead merchant.

    5. I killed the Black Night and got the Blue Tearstone Ring.

    6. I killed the Taurus Demon. He didn't drop anything good! :(

    7. I found the Solaire of Astora and had such sense that I felt compelled to make make this post.

    8. Im at the red dragon now.

    25/09/2019

    1. I got the Drake. Im taking strength to 16 and thats it. Im fighting with alot more confident. It took 23 standar arrow hits. I took about 50 shots.

    2. I went under the Red Dragon last night and cleared the area behind him the Bore than I realized I need that bon fire and the only way to defeat him is with arrows. so went and bought bunch more arrows and my goal is to slay the bitch tonight.

    3. I lost to the Black Knight on top of the tower couple of times already. I will go for him after getting to that bonfire.

    26/09/2019

    1. Ive lost about 10k, spent another 10k on arrows, and spent atleast 3 hours but have not defeated the Bridge Wyvern. I shot him with long arrow about 130 time from where the rats are he started regenerating and I ran out of arrows. Later I found out he cant regen without his tail so if I try that again I will cut his tail from the other side but that would be another 10k!. I think I forgot to drop the ladder to my previous bon fire so its a long walk every time. I did find it but I dont remember an option for lowering the ladder. I think I will try doing that before fighting him again. I am not leaving this area until I kill the dragon.

    27/09/2019

    1. I killed the red Dragon afted watching a YouTube video. I shot his tail off 1st than ran up and hid behind the wall by yhe stairs to avoid his fire. Than I ran up and slashed his foot. He does another fire and I just stayed tight to the wall and didnt get hurt. I ran back down the stairs when he does his back and fort walk. Kept repeating that and he died. It wasnt that hard to be honest. Ps cutting hos tail does not stap him from regenerating.

    2. Im at the Bell Gargoyles now.

    01/10/2019

    1. I reinforced a Claymore to +5. Im stuck at the Bell Gargoyles. I feel Claymore is too slow for me. I need something with lower weight and better movement. Am I wasting my Titinit shards on upgrading random weapons? Should i save them?

    2. I freed Lautrec. I ran back to Firelink and have his summon now.

    3. I absolutely dont like the Claymore. Its way to slow. I tried the Long Sword and I love the move set and its much more my speed but it doesnt break the blocks so it makes it hard for me to fight.

    4. I found Hydra and Capra Demon. They both killed me and I lost 10k+ souls. I started with 0 souls and I finished with 0 souls. I did kill the Black Knight in Darkroot Basin. My claymore is +5 now. Although Im one hitting most enemies and breaking all blocks, I feels slugish in boss fight. Am I suppose to keep runing around between locations and farm?

    5. At about 10% completion and realy enjoying the new areas I am finding. Its so eerie and my heart pounding the whole time. I am avoiding some areas because Im legit scared...lol

    6. Excuse me Bell Gargoyles was too easy with summons! I summoned Solair and Lautrec and they wrapped it up. I barely did anything.

    7. I RANG THE UPPER BELL. Oswald of Crim is there. All the Covenant stuff happens with him at the top of the Parish.

    8. I killed the Undead Merchant and took his Uchigatana. I had no need for him. Dont forget to buy the bottomless box from him. Dont kill him early either because you need to buy arrows from him.

    9. I have Claymore +5, Long Sword +5, Uchigatana +5

    10. I killed the Titnit Demon Easily with Short Bow +1 and standard arrows.

    11. I found the Moonlight Butterfly. Im sure that I have to kills her with a bow. Will go back there soon. I lost 7k on my last run because I got cocky so I gave up.

    12. Online friend:"There is a shield and a summon sign for moonlight butterfly. Go back to the Undead Asylum (tutorial zone) by jumping off the lift at firelink before it gets all the way down, and roll across to the support beam on the right. Then work your way back to the guy that gave you your first estus. Be careful not to walk through the center of the boss room as the floor will fall. The guy will be hollow, and when you kill him he drops the Crest Shield, which has 80% magic reduction. The summon sign is behind some bushes at the base of the moonlight butterfly tower." Will try.

    13. I like the Uchigatana +5 but am having easier time with the Claymore +5. I got a good shield the regens my stamina but rather use both hands. Im not using much Pyromancer at all!

    14. Im split between going for Capra Demon, who has killed me a dozen times already, or for Moonlight Butterfly.

    Questions

    1. Am I suppose to tele back to the bonfire everytime I have lots of souls? Ive lost alot of souls by dying far from bonfire! (Answered)

    2. I read that you can shoot the red dragon's tale for a weapon. Do I need to buy bow and arrows?(Answered)

    3. Should I bother joining a Covenant befor finding Chaos Servant?(Answered)

    4. Do I need humanity? (Answered)

    Notes:

    1. Bosses are not that hard.
    2. Firebombs help alot...early
    3. 23 standard arrow hits to take Drake from Red Dragon tail.
    4. Its ok to get hints online and read wiki if you need. I am fully enjoying the game and the time spent researching.
    5. Summons (NPCs that tele to your location) make bosses easy. YOU MUST BE HUMAN TO SUMMON.
    6. Seaech areas throughly for loot on corpses.
