Brume Tower is something else... Posted: 14 Oct 2019 01:53 PM PDT So after beating the base game, i spent some time farming giant lord 7 times, making myself seemingly overpowered, and testing my skills on asceticed rotten, and Heide's tower knights. I became pretty confident that nothing could stop me. Fast forward to DLCs. I walk into the tower sporting powerstanced great demon hammer +5 and Kings UGS. They my L2 can slam some enemies for 1.2k damage. I have nothing to fear! Muahahaha. Oh boy was I wrong. Sure I can pancake the hollowed Knights and axemen and such there, some bigger guys taking 2-3 slams to kill, but holy god damn this DLC is so much more brutal than anything I've done in the base game. I'm stuck on those ghost dudes than can respawn themselves while I'm simultaneously fighting an npc invader... Can't wait to get home from work and give it another shot. Either that, or make my way to frigid outskirts. Never been there, but I've heard that place is brutally evil. Please share y'alls failures of overconfidence in the comments if ya wanna. Praise the sun! [link] [comments] |
Just beat Dark Souls II for the first time! Posted: 14 Oct 2019 10:54 AM PDT This is the second Souls game I've played, after DS1 as I'm trying to play them all in chronological order (except Demons Souls, waiting on a remaster of that). I played on my old Xbox 360 in offline mode, so no SotFS or patches for me. I made a post in /r/DarkSouls when I beat that game, and shared a few thoughts, so you can find that post here. All that aside, what a game this is! I was initially a bit apprehensive about playing this game since I've heard this is the worst of the series, but while some of the criticism levelled at the game is arguably deserved I honestly think people are a little too harsh on the game. I'm going to briefly give a few thoughts and hopefully address some of those criticisms along the way, much in the same way I did for DS1. This time around, I used much less outside help than I did for DS1. This is due in part to me understanding the Souls mechanics a lot better, but also just because I felt I'd robbed myself of some of the quintessential DS1 experience by having some elements spoiled for me - my own fault, of course. It wasn't that in DS1 I was actively looking for spoilers, but I was enjoying the game so much that when I wasn't playing it I was watching people's videos on YouTube about it which, predictably, contained spoilers. So I knew a few areas and bosses beforehand etc. Well this time I tried going in totally blind, and what an experience that was! There have been so many memorable 'oh shit' moments I can't even count them all, and I'm glad I resisted the urge to visit this subreddit or watch videos during my playthrough. I think the only time I consistently looked something up was bonfire locations when the bonfire I was on was too far away from the boss of the area. Having said that, I thought the bonfire placement was much fairer in this game than in the first. I rarely had to run past a shitload of enemies to reach a boss, and when I did it was because the boss had pancaked me so many times I'd lost the will to fight the enemies on the way there. Going in blind was a double edged sword at times, though. For example - I never once say a Pyromancy Flame in the game! Presumably it's found pretty early on, but I missed it so, because I was committed to a blind run, no pyro no party for me. I finished the game in 37 hrs 19 min at SL125, nearly half the time it took me to finish DS1 and nearly double the soul level! I hadn't intended to level up quite so much, but I found upgrade materials (titanite chunks, mostly) to be quite hard to get a hold of so often there wasn't much else to spend my souls on. I went for Knight as my starting class, and followed the same policy as I did in the first game of going for a tankish kind of build - so lots of points into health, stamina and strength - with a few more in ADP and equip load, then after a while I just started pouring points into Faith ready for a Cleric-style NG+ build. Most of the game I played with a Fire Longsword with Heide Knight Sword as my backup, then after finding the Zwei I quietly levelled that up in the background until I was ready to unleash hell with it. My final loadout was:
Now I thought I'd just share a few thoughts on the ways the game improves upon the first, and a discussion of the common criticisms of the game. I'll start with the positives, in no particular order: I thought the Estus system was much better in this game. Rather than having to spend humanity to kindle bonfires in one specific area, Estus shards are spread throughout the world - this encourages exploration by rewarding the player with a slightly easier ride across the whole of the game. This means that the player has more ways to improve their character along with finding new gear and levelling it up, increasing their soul level etc., and thus there is a smoother progression curve than in the first game. I also enjoyed the Pharros' Lockstone mechanic (apart from Doors of Pharros, very shit area but at least one that looks good). In terms of difficulty, the game was roughly as difficult as the first, I'd say. The bosses were definitely much easier, but the ordinary enemies in each area were much harder. I thought that the mechanic of enemies slowly disappearing if you died many times to be a pretty fair mechanic, but IMO if the game didn't have the stupid Hollowing system then there would be no need for it. I loved the areas of this game. I thought the DS1 areas couldn't be improved upon but the sheer diversity and attention to detail in the design of these levels made them just outstanding. Except Shrine of Amana. Fuck Shrine of Amana. The areas themselves were generally better and more well designed than in the last game, but I do miss the interconnectedness of DS1 compared to DS2 - if DS1 was a mesh structure, where many areas lead to others which lead to others which double back on themselves, DS2 was more like a star structure where each area orbiting MeJulie had a bunch of other areas branching out from it in a more linear fashion. The areas themselves though were labyrinthine in their own right, sort of microcosms of DS1 as a whole, with lots of twisting paths which are nicely interconnected. The game is definitely much harder in the early sections than in the later sections - with the possible exception of bosses. In DS1 I only beat a boss on the first try once (Pinwheel lol) but in DS2 it had already happened several times in the first half of the game. One criticism I've seen of the game is that the bosses are mostly just crowds of enemies or big humanoids with swords, and while I'm not sure if this is necessarily a bad thing it definitely does mean that many of them have very similar patterns and so there is a 'one size fits all' solution of dodging to avoid a stab, getting a couple of hits in and then dodging outwards to avoid a sweep - rinse and repeat. Anyway, onto the negatives (by the way, I'm aware some of these may have been fixed with patches or in SotFS). The Hollowing mechanic, where you lose max health every time you die, sucks. I cannot fathom the inclusion of this. It punishes experimentation and innovative play since you're scared to try anything new after using an effigy, and until I got the Ring of Binding it pushed some of the sections of the game into chore territory. I'd have been much happier with the game if bosses had 2x health but there was no Hollowing. Anyway, I don't know what others think about it but that's my ten pence. Another mechanic which annoyed me is the fact that you can only level up at the Emerald Herald, instead of any bonfire as before. It means that if you want to bank your souls, you've got to fast-travel to Majula, level up there, then travel back to where you were - totally immersion and tension breaking. I'm sure they included it only to justify having the fast-travel system in the first place. Shrine of Amana and the Iron Keep were just not fun. Lost probably 150,000+ souls combined there. I am ASTOUNDED at the lack of basic fun present in vanilla Shrine of Amana. It's like they tried to make the level as unenjoyable as possible - the water slowing you down, the hidden enemies and ledges, the homing magic missile attacks, the axe guys who can wreck you in two hits, the random giant corrosive mushroom guy who will destroy all of your kit (even rings!) AND a dark spirit NPC right before the boss? Truly awful. And that is one of my only criticisms of the overall level design in this game - the developers too often seem to have gone: more enemies, traps, ledges, bonfires next to enemies, collapsing geometry = harder game = better game. The 'Dark Souls is difficult' hype seems to have gone to their heads in this one, and a lot of the time they've tried to make a 'hard' boss fight / area / enemy instead of a fun, challenging one. There were a few other QoL problems too - NPCs failing to arrive back in Majula, the falling attack mechanic barely working, and one super specific one was if I did two strong attacks in a row with my Zwei, the second would always make my character do a 180 and swipe the other way. Not sure if this was intentional or not, but it meant that the strong attack was only really viable in single swipes or against bosses where the second attack would get them anyway due to large hitboxes. Another annoying change from DS1 was that you can't see what attributes are in the menu - they're just tiny icons so you have to commit each one to memory or use the back button and scroll through to find out what each one is, every time you want to compare stats like Dark DEF, Bleed etc. Anyway, finally as I did before I'll just give my thoughts on some of the bosses. As I said before, I generally thought they were easier than in the first game, but that could just be because I've gitten gud compared to when I started DS1 for the first time... Hardest Bosses:

Areas I Somehow Managed To Miss Entirely:
Man, in vanilla the Lost Sinner really does just melt you. I think I may have stumbled across this fight a little early since apparently the official guide recommends that you're SL90 for it, and I was around SL35 at the time if I remember correctly. I got really close to killing him a couple of times, but in the end and after summoning Lucatiel twice and still not pulling it off, I resolved to come back when I was a bit stronger - this was after around 15 attempts. Returned right at the end of my run and melted her in one try. I hear that the nerf they gave her in SotFS is that instead of jumping away as she does in vanilla, making it really difficult to get a hit in without burning a tonne of stamina, she just stays still for a few seconds, letting you get a few hits in. Pretty good fight though, if a little frustrating. The Belfry Gargoyles, however, are the only Souls boss fight to date that I've walked away from. They play into the 'more = harder = better' design paradigm I was talking about earlier, where it's like 'ya remember the Anor Londo archers you hated so much? Well here's an area full of them!' or 'ya remember those gargoyles you spent hours trying to beat in Undead Parish? Remember there was two of them! Well now there's FIVE of them!'. It felt like a lazy rehash and after a few attempts I just gave up and sacked it off, deciding to have a few more cracks at The Lost Sinner instead. I'm sure if I had gone back later I would have destroyed them but I just could not muster the desire to go there and try it. On a more positive note, I really enjoyed the Ruin Sentinels boss battle. Introducing you to the first one right out the gate before bringing the difficulty up by making you fight the next two afterward, and forcing you into the main arena by hopping up onto that platform where you couldn't possibly hope to take the two of them on. The turning point for me was when I realised that instead of hopping straight down at first to avoid the immediate attack at the start, you need to do the above and take out the first guy before the second one jumps up - then when that happens get a couple of hits in before jumping down and fighting the two of them together. A really tough fight, but equally as rewarding once it was finished. This one probably took me 5-10 attempts. The Royal Rat bosses, Vanguard and Authority were at two ends of that same spectrum. Royal Rat Vanguard was an interesting fight in that it was something different, and I admit I did have to google what the deal was after a lot of confusion about why I was only sometimes bringing the health bar down. Took me about 5 attempts. Royal Rat Authority was just stinky Sif with added bullshit due to the little rat things. Not even a hard fight once you get rid of those, just annoying. That one probably took me 5 attempts to get rid of the rat things without getting pancaked and 2 more attempts after I figured out how I was going to do it. Very bad fight. Dragonrider was a boss fight that happened. Can't really remember it, though. Pretty forgettable and I got it on the first try. Jabba the Hutt was equally as easy, I sliced him up in a few seconds while he rolled around doing nothing in particular, and beat him on the first try. Incidentally, Myra in the same area - how the hell are we supposed to know to burn the windmill with the torch? I tried this fight so many times before resolving to look up what the 'trick' was, because I knew there must be one. There weren't even any clues that that was what you are supposed to do - no cryptic item messages, no cutscene, no nothing. Anyway once you figure that out it's a pretty cool fight. She has a really wide moveset which I think is cool in a boss fight, keeps you on your toes! The Last Giant was a nice introduction to bosses in the game, even though I summoned and let it squish Pate on the first go while I hung back watching it's moveset. I think I got him on the 3rd or 4th try. It introduces the concept of two-stage boss battles but there aren't actually a whole load of those in the game. I was expecting it to be the case in almost every fight after The Last Giant, but it never really materialised outside of one or two fights. Imagine if the Pursuer had a second stage where that eagle thing comes and picks him up to get you with fly-by swipes of his sword! Or if the Flexile Sentry had a second stage where it split apart and they came after you separately. That was also a cool fight in concept but I just found it a bit too easy - another one that I got on the 1st or 2nd try. Throne Watcher & Throne Defender was hands down my favourite boss by far. Probably in both games. It was the perfect balance of difficulty and fairness, a nice little second-stage addition and a nice touch where if you kill one the other one will bring it back to life if you fail to kill them both within a short-ish window. Therefore the strategy is a unique one where you have to whittle down both of their health until they're both low, swapping between them, baiting one into attacking and then getting a swipe in before dodging the next one and getting a hit in there, then retreating and getting your stamina back up - before killing them both in one fell swoop. There was an awesome moment I think on the penultimate or even last attempt where I happened to get them both to half health at the same time and then as I rolled away they both slowly charged up their lightning swords side-by-side in perfect unison before coming at me with full force. Just a great fight which took me probably 6-8 attempts to get done. Old Dragonslayer was a nice throwback to DS1, it's good to be able to have a crack at Ornstein without worrying about Smough thrusting a big hammer into your face, and the buttslam attack was a good little joke. I don't understand why people hate Prowling Magus so much, this was another one I got on the first try - it really isn't that much of a 'bullshit' fight. I don't think the congregation managed to get me once and I just ran circuits around, giving a few hits to the Magus each time until only the crawling guys were left - then just mopped them up and I was on my way. Looking Glass Knight was a pretty good fight too, a tough one. I think that probably took me 10 or so attempts until I finally summoned the wee Scottish guy and finished him off nice and quickly, before he could even summon more than one mirror knight guy. All in all, a really great game. I've ordered DS3 online - can't wait for it to arrive. I'll be playing this one online on my PS4 so will finally be getting the quintessential Dark Souls experience. Thanks for reading! [link] [comments] |
I finally beat every single boss in the trilogy on my own. Posted: 14 Oct 2019 12:01 PM PDT Just soloed Lud and Zallen, I saved those little shits for last. I almost beat them on my very first try, but my Greatsword broke just before I could get off two more hits and end it. No repair powder, I'm an idiot. I kept fighting anyway, and even did considerable damage. But it took too long and I eventually made mistakes and died. Then of course it took me 5+ tries to get through the Frigid Outskirts, even though it took me one try the first time. I can't begin to describe my frustration. Even 'til the very end, I had to fight the urge to say fuck this and give up. But I kept fighting. I'm finally finished, greeted by a deep sense of satisfaction. I fucking love this series. Posted: 14 Oct 2019 01:23 PM PDT Hello everyone (: I tried a no death run, and killed some bosses (list below) without dying, until I made a dumb mistake and ran into Smelter Demon without clean the path, and died to Alonne Knights. I ran a rapier build + drang shield, and died just because a dumb mistake. But I want to improve more. Do you guys have hints to a run without dying? Bosses: Last Giant, Pursuer, Chariot, Skeleton Lords, Sentry, Lost Sinner, Gargoyles, Ruin Sentinels, Mytha, Old Dragonslayer, Covetus, and Dragonrider. Edit: Died at SL 70 ~ 80, IIRC [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Oct 2019 06:31 AM PDT I was farming iron arrows on my low SM character in no man's wharf, and the undead archer that shoots fire arrows at you in the beginning dropped three fire arrows. i could not find any information online which referenced this. figured i would share and it makes me wonder what other drops are not documented on any of the dark souls 2 sites [link] [comments] |
I did it, I did it, I did it, I fuckin did it, Posted: 14 Oct 2019 01:18 PM PDT I started with Bloodborne in 2015 after DS1 failed to keep me invested and was to punishing. I bought the game not expecting to beat it a single time. I'm now on NG+37. I then gave Dark Souls another chance with Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne having given me the confidence to try again. I went on to beat DS3 and both it's DLC 9 times. Then came Sekiro. having Bloodborne and DS3 under my belt i went on to platinum Sekiro. However DS1 and DS2 were somewhat off limits. The clunkier gameplay, less bonfires, more fogwalls. Being punished harshly for deaths with hollowing and effigies being a lot more rare than Embers in DS3. I understood that I am more adept in the BB aggressive play-style. However my love for the previous games made me buy both DS2: SOTFS and DSR. I tried twice to get into DS2, making it all the way to Iron Keep just for the area to make me quit. While Smelter Demon himself isn't bad the run up to him is infuriating. So I dropped the game. I then picked up DSR and have currently just beat Bed of Chaos. though the difficulty is really deterring me from playing. I don't know why or how but out of boredom I decided to try and pick up DS2 again, I started over. This time, I beat the entire game by myself with the exception of Smelter Demon who I summoned 1 friend for, just to help me clear the enemies. Not 30 minutes ago I beat both Throne Watcher and Defender and Nashandra in one go. All while hallowed with 52 Human effigies stocked up. I honestly never thought I would beat this game. Now while I love 80% of this game, their is 20% that I hate. Before I go into my biggest negatives though I want to say that I think this game gets a lot more hate then it deserves and in some aspects I think it's even better than DS3. So to start off, no password system, I'm sure I don't have to explain why this is frustrating, just wanting to help people or play with friends is basically impossible because they started so much later than me. The next big negative I have are the areas "Iron Keep", "Black Gultch" and "Shrine of Amana". While both Iron Keep and Shrine both look really cool, they are WAY to many enemies and hazards that it really comes off as artificial bullshit difficulty. None of the enemies in Iron Keep are hard, but 5 Alonne Knights. 2 turtles, 3 archers and narrow platforms with lava hazards and all of them blocking the boss fog wall is absolute bullshit. It's so luck based or grind based instead of their being actually challenging enemies. Same with Black Gultch, just replace lava with poison. Shrine of Amana is very similar, instead of archers it's sorceresses and instead of lava or poison it's deep water. I really hate the overwhelming designs. However all of the worst area's are right before possibly my favorite area in all of Souls, Drangleic Castle. That being said I still love this game and it's up their in my top 15 games of all time. I'm so glad I finally got into DS2, while I watched lore video's on all the games, whenever someone would ask if I was a "Dark Souls fan" I would kinda feel bad only have beaten one Souls game. I haven't played all the DLC yet but I just defeated Giant Lord. I just can't express how happy I am to be able to say that I love this game. [link] [comments] |

Fuck shine of amana and the person who thought it was a good idea Posted: 14 Oct 2019 02:27 PM PDT Whoever designed this area should never design a level in a video game again I refuse to play this game after how horrible this level Is the enemies do absurd damage there's barely any cover you can't move and they snipe you from half way across the map and you can't see where your moving because the Dumas who made this level decided it wasn't unfair enough and decided to make pits in the level never buying anything the b team makes again [link] [comments] |

Lowest possible AR with bleed infusion Posted: 14 Oct 2019 11:04 AM PDT I'm trying to route a new challenge run using mostly only bleed procs to deal damage. For that, I need a weapon that deals very little damage that can still be infused with bleed. Sadly, the Ladle and Caestus are both out of the question since neither can be infused with bleed I have thought of a couple possible choices like the regular Dagger or the Parrying Dagger. The best one I found is the Work Hook. It already has innate bleed, I can start as a sorcerer to avoid the 6 STR requirement and break it to get the AR as low as possible, and since it doesn't scale with DEX or FTH, it's pretty perfect Wondering if there's any other weapon that might work so suggestions pls ty [link] [comments] |

Which area should get the title "Sens Fortress 2"? Posted: 14 Oct 2019 12:15 AM PDT Which area should get the title "Sens Fortress 2"? As in: Many traps and nailbiting difficulty. So far I can think about a few: Earthen Peak: Traps, ambushes and you even have to climb the building to progess! Perfect contender for "Sens Fortress 2" or at least "Sens Mill" Drangleic Castle: Stone soldiers comming back to life, doors you have to open with souls, rooms filled with poison/curse traps. A new take on Sens Fortress. Fresh air is always good, right? Brume Tower: This time you have to work your way down. Traps and ambushes are laid out for you, so if you are not very careful you end up dead sooner than you think. A little longer than the other areas, but you at least get more bonfires in between the segments. Shulva: More Sens City than Sens Fortress, however not less spectacular. Venture through not one but TWO whole temples! And not only one but TWO bosses await you at the end! Not only traps and ambushes, but also an invader will cross your way. These are all that I can think of, do you know more? Please, feel free to share! And which one of those do you think deserves the title of "Sens Fortess 2"? [link] [comments] |

Every time I go to the Belfry Gargoyles boss arena, I find that the boss health bar comes up, and the music starts playing. However most of the Gargoyles are missing from their pedestals, and the rest are on their pedestals, motionless, with their heads cut off.I tried saving, and reloading. I tried going back to the last bonfire, restarting the game, etc. but no dice.Does anyone know what caused this bug, and how to fix it? [link] [comments] |
