Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread!

Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play!

For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls

Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games.

Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned:

    Dark Souls: Remastered

    Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

    Dark Souls III

    Our recommendations for safe modding

*This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account.

    Basic Steps:

    Make a separate Steam account

Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library.

Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory.

Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation.

Set Steam to "off line" mode.

Install the mods and perform any necessary setup.

Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods!

Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online!

Why Dark Souls has the best LOCK ON of any Souls title...

Listen to this live orchestra which is playing "the Kindled of Lodran". To be honest that's amazing.

Current list of all Souls-like Games

    Posted: 14 Oct 2019 03:26 AM PDT

    Hi All

If you are like me, there came a point where Dark Souls entered your life and ever since then there is no game that really scratches the itch. It's resulted in a lot of failed purchases and wasted money! Over the years I have played and found many souls-like games but I am hoping there are still some out there that remain relatively underground

There is another post on this from about 2 years ago in DS3 group but seems quite old: https://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls3/comments/5svelf/list_of_all_soulslike_games/

EDIT: Ashen moved up as worthwhile if on Xbox or PC

The games I am aware of in total, separated by my uneducated opinion groupings:

Good ones that I have beaten and scratched the itch to a point:

    Nioh

    Surge and Surge 2

    Code Vein

    Salt and Sanctuary

    Remnant: From the Ashes

    Death's Gambit

    Blasphemous

    Lords of the Fallen

    Hyper Light Drifter

    Ashen

Darksiders 3 - debateable souls-like, not the best game (depends on difficulty setting 100%)

    GoW (2018) - debateable souls-like, amazing game

    Some game about a MAUS

    Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption

Bad clones or games that don't quite cut it - I think important to note to not waste time if you looking for Souls

    Immortal: Unchained

    Let it Die

    Bound by Flames

    Technomancer

    Games perceived as Souls-like IMO:

Hollow Knight and Dead Cells - not quite, good games though

Greedfall and Witcher looks similar at first but really is so different

Is there anything else? Anything coming out soon? Everytime I beat one of these I get sad that i've finished the list

    Did anyone else notice this?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2019 05:53 PM PDT

I didn't realize until ng+3 that while Sif acquires some of Artorias's fighting style, in the cutscene Sif flips the sword from his right side to his left side to match the style of Artorias... Could this mean he is left handed?

So I've been playing for a good long time now but I have a terrible secret, I can't beat ng+.

    Posted: 14 Oct 2019 05:46 AM PDT

Tried so many times, so many builds, light roll fat roll, demons greataxe and Havel's with sunlight blade, a zwei build, mage, uchi, claymore, black knight weapons, even the all mighty palidin leeroy can't get me there

It seems I am just barely the chosen undead, any recommendations to a long time player who did git gud but not gud enough

Could you skip Gargoyles with Sen's skip?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2019 04:51 AM PDT

If Sens skip unloads stuff like fog walls, could the Belfry Gargoyles be skipped, similar to Quelagg? It might be possible to do a 2 boss run in Ds1.

Is it worth it to upgrade my weapon to 11 or higher before Anor Londo?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2019 12:31 AM PDT

I know there is a way to drain the water in New Londo to grab the ember to upgrade a normal weapon past 10.

But to do this, you have to kill that one guy on the roof of the building with the many ghosts.

How important is he? Do I lose out on much if I kill him?

Best Build/Character to Help Out Every Boss

    Posted: 13 Oct 2019 07:23 PM PDT

    Greetings all.

I did couple of playthroughs, I did a SL1 playthrough, I have low-level PVP build, etc. I like this game and I'm having lots of fun.

That being said, the thing I enjoy the most is to help out people against boss fights. So I thought about doing one character for each boss fight geared towards helping people beat them.

For each of the bosses, what do you think would be both the best build and the best level range ? I don't want super complicated build where I have to run everywhere and die 1000 times to get what I need, I already did SL1 I don't want to do it again.

    Bosses I'm looking at:

    • Gargoyle
    • Capra Demon
    • Gaping Dragon
    • Quelaag
    • Iron Golem
    • O&S
    • Sanctuary Guardian
    • Artorias
    • Manus
    • Sif
    • Four Kings
    • Neet
    • Centipede/Firesage (they are so close I don't need two different characters for it)
    • Seath
    • Gwyn

My goal would be to name each character with something like "Helper for X" where X = boss name. I wouldn't do any help for Gwyndolin, Priscila, Bed of Chaos, Moonlight Butterfly, Pinwheel and Ceaseless for reasons.

    Thanks !

    Best rapier+spear for faith?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2019 02:53 AM PDT

I'm thinking of making a Carolean themed build with a rapier, a spear and a bunch of miracles. What weapons would be the best (ricard's lightning?). Or should i ignore infusions/base scaling and just do a quality/Dex build with high faith and lightning blade?

Notice the disparity of the Flame in the opening cinematic

    Posted: 13 Oct 2019 10:06 AM PDT

When watching the intro for god knows how many times I noticed something I never noticed before.

The size of the Flame each Lord receives. From the cinematic from largest to smallest:

Lord Gywn: His Flame is BLAZING under his hands, its absolutely freaking huge compared to the rest

Nito: Larger than the Witch of Izalith's, not comparable to Gwyns

Witch of Izalith: Smaller than Nito

Furtive Pygmy: Teeny tiny flame barely enough to sustain itself

Anyways this may have been posted before prolly, but its the first time I actually paid attention to the Flames each were holding.

The reciting of "Do not got gentle into tha good night" by Dylan Thomas in most recent Vaati video is incredibly fitting for the Dark Souls lore, to the point it's hard to believe this poem was not written for the game itself.

    Posted: 13 Oct 2019 08:53 PM PDT

I'm aware this poem was not used with DS for the first time but in Vaati's editing, you can really assume it's almost part of the game dialogue. Seems to me like nobody is talking about it, yet I think this is worth mentioning.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

So, where did this "Dexterity is Forbidden" thing come from?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2019 03:00 PM PDT

I'm using the Giantdad build as a basis for a custom build I'm doing. I leveled up my Dex to 14 before I was aware that 10 should be the maximum. I can't help feeling like I've committed a terrible sin here. I just want to know where this "Rule" came from. I'm guessing it's from the early days of Dark Souls where everyone had the ninja flip ring and full Havels. But I'm not sure.

How do i reach bell gargoyles?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2019 09:47 PM PDT

Where does Vaatividya get all the lore from?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2019 12:29 AM PDT

Like he can make whole videos about the lore while I can't even see any details in the game. Is it true that the lore comes mostly from item descriptions and character dialouges?

What Exactly IS Gwyn? + Theory About His Tolerance of Gwyndolin's Existence

    Posted: 13 Oct 2019 12:29 PM PDT

So, I've made quite a realisation about Gwyndolin and how Gwyn must have truly viewed him this morning and have spent all day slapping together a doc with all the info and item descriptions to support it, but as I type about the Warriors of Sunlight and Gwyn's firstborn who is supposedly represented by the sun I think...what IS Gwyn?

His soul names him as the 'Lord of Sunlight', Gwyndolin's illusion of Gwynevere is referred to as the 'Queen of Sunlight' as though she has taken her father's mantle, but what of Solaire's dialogue about how incandescent the sun is, and how it is like a 'wondrous father'? All this time I thought Gwyn to basically be the god of the sun but going through all this evidence I am not entirely sure.

The only reason I ask is because part of my theory rests on who exactly is being referred to in the line 'the image of the sun manifests Gwyndolin's deep adoration of the sun.' You'd probably immediately think this would be Gwyn. But I have a feeling it is actually referring to his elder brother, mainly because of how the Sunlight Medal states that the symbol of the sun represents Gwyn's first born. Not that I'm saying he didn't love Gwyn (at least for a while), but I feel like if he was entirely loyal to his father he would have either hidden the Sunlight Blade miracle better or destroyed/erased it all together.

Why is this you may ask? I believe the only reason Gwyn tolerated Gwyndolin's existence and recognition of him as his child despite Seath clearly having a hand in his creation (snakes are viewed as lesser dragons, all the links with the Moonlight Butterfly and the Holy Moonlight Greatsword) whereas Priscilla was dubbed an 'abomination' and Yorshka nearly sharing the same fate, not being mentioned previously AT ALL is because he was afraid Gwyndolin would follow in his elder brother's footsteps if he learned of his draconic heritage. Think about it, the only time we EVER hear about moonlight magic being viewed as 'feminine' it is in relation to how Gwyn raised Gwyndolin, essentially creating this whole BS story to make him feel terrible about himself and keep him weak and obedient so that he wouldn't be able to possibly attempt to rise an army of dragons against him.

Once I've finished putting this doc together I can link it here for people to see if you'd like to see the evidence laid out, but it's still very messy at the moment and I'm a little bit stuck on how exactly to describe Gwyn. Is he a god of the sun, a god of sunlight, or just a god who has a strong affinity for the sun who birthed the gods of the sun and moon?

PSA FOR CAPRA DEMON, TIPS AND SPOILERS

    Posted: 13 Oct 2019 02:46 PM PDT

I always see people say the fight is terrible (I agree) and many say the worst part is the approach with the bandit knife guys (they're the worst) but after your first run through the hollows don't go into the boss room, go down the stairs and up the tower back to firelink.

There are only 2 bandits this way, one of whom you can back stab, you get 10 estus instead of 5 or using 2 humanity, you only need to kill 2 dogs instead of 5 and the hollows on your way up to the aquaducts are the easiest on the game post asylum demon, it's way less hassle that way

I hate snake men (and Sens Fortress)

    Posted: 13 Oct 2019 03:29 PM PDT

Snake men across all of Dark Souls suck. Both the ones in Sens Fortress and the ones in Archdragon peak. They feel too powerful in DS1, and in DS3 they are just huge annoyances I want out of my way. Sens Fortress is already a bitch to get through but the Snake men make it worse. It's even worse that there is only one bonfire at the end of the area and that Sen's Fortress basically comes right after Blighttown. Its even worse if your controller or keyboard is fucked. My controller has drift on it so I've experienced falling off and moving into the giant swinging axes more times than I should have. Snake men I believe also do more damage than they should be doing by this point in the game, and if you are using a simple, normal weapon like the longsword at this point, it'll be worse because they have more health than they should have. Fuck this area. Thank you for wasting your time reading my whining.
