    Who is the Furtive Pygmy ?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 07:22 PM PDT

    I'm relatively new to Dark Souls and the lore in particular although I find it really interesting. I've been looking back at bosses and encounters (DS1) and can't remember anything about the Pygmy outside of the opening cutscene. Is there anything known about this guy, so easily forgotten ?

    I took screenshots to compare Dark Souls Remastered for Ps4 and Switch... the results are surprising

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 08:49 PM PDT

    The Ps4 (and presumably Xbox one) version looks completely hideous and unfinished. The Switch version restores the original shaders and textures + touch-ups.

    Just wish the audio wasn't as crunched as a Nintendo DS game for Switch. They were SOOO close to creating a definitive console version of the game, if only they mixed the good of both.

    Here's the images.

    Fuck the Capra demon

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 05:44 AM PDT

    I've tried 5 times now and I'm using a Zweihandler, so I literally can't even hit the dogs and when I die I have to run all the way from firelink, just so I can fight a boss with no chance to heal, no space, full on gangbang, etc. Dark souls 1 seems to have the lowest lows, when something sucks, IT REALLY SUCKS! (Capra, sen's, lost izalith, bed of chaos, the catacombs AND tomb of the giants)

    I was having a lot of fun untill I had to fight this fucker…

    [Minor Spoilers] Question about lore influences of the player character

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 12:48 AM PDT

    I played through DS3 and am now tackling DS1 (and loving it). I just finished off Ornstein and Smaugh and read up on some lore tidbits about them, some of those describing their fates in the later games. Which made me wonder: as you supposedly kill them here in DS1, do the other games then "ignore" the actions of the player character? Or are they undead themselves and simply come back, to follow their paths of the next games? Or am I just putting too much thought into this?

    Anything to know jumping into this game after Bloodborne?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 01:43 AM PDT

    The only soulsborne game I have ever played is Bloodborne and I loved every second of it. I wanted to also try out dark souls, and many have said that this game is a lot more slow and focuses more on defense compared to Bloodborne. So is there anything I need to "un-learn" about Bloodborne when I play this game? Is the play style drastically different? Can I play just as offensively as I did in Bloodborne or is that not viable?

    Help with Gravelord Nito?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 04:41 PM PDT

    First time playing DS, I've progressed fairly easily and have been enjoying it up to this point, but I'm so stumped I've almost put the game away.

    Ive gotten to the dark no-light area, and it's taken a solid day just to go from pinwheel to the bonfire because I couldn't see so I'd fall off or die or whatever. Now I'm just completely stuck at the boss. Ive looked it up where a holy weapon is recommended here, except I have no idea how to do that, I've been using the Zweihander (+8) most of the game and now just entering the boss area, a quarter of my health is depleted and I get MOWED down pretty quickly. Can't deal with the adds, plus the ground attack and the boss.

    Is there any way to get help here?

    Edit: mission accomplished. Thank you all!

    Gwyn's relationship with Humanity is more nuanced than people imagine

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 03:31 PM PDT

    I'd like to talk about Gwyn, and what I think has become a misinterpretation of his character by the fandom. Now don't get me wrong, I don't mean to say that Gwyn is some redemptive character or even good at all. However, I feel like he has become somewhat flanderized as of late.

    This discussion will mostly focus on the lore as it stands for Dark Souls 1, but I will touch on Dark Souls 3 towards the end.

    Firstly, the general fandom interpretation of Gwyn. Gwyn is a being who hates humans, and has done nothing but oppress them at every given opportunity. Gwyn's entire scheme as the Age of Fire ended was to cripple and prevent humans from usurping the Gods.

    This interpretation I feel is simplistic and funnily seems to mostly come from dialogue with Kaathe - a serpent known to stretch the truth for their own ends. I'd like to cover evidence that Gwyn's relationship was humanity was not as one-sided and antagonistic as we tend to think.

    Havel the Rock

    Havel of course, is the most well known example of a positive relationship between a human and Gwyn. From Havel's Ring;

    This ring was named after Havel the Rock, the battlefield compatriot of Gwyn, the First Lord.

    From the White Seance Ring;

    A divine ring entrusted to the head bishop of the Way of White and apostle to Allfather Lloyd, uncle to Lord Gwyn. ... The head bishop of the Way of White is the guardian of law and caste, and one of the great royals of Thorolund.

    From Great Magic Barrier;

    Miracle of Bishop Havel the Rock. Cover body in powerful def. magic coating. Havel the Rock, an old battlefield compatriot of Lord Gwyn, was the sworn enemy of Seath the Scaleless. He despised magic, and made certain to devise means of counteraction.

    Havels' set is also found deep in Anor Londo, the very city of the Gods.

    From all this, we can gleam a few important facts;

    1. Havel, a known human, was consistently known to be a good friend of Gwyn

    2. The exploits of humans during the War of The Ancient Dragons was in fact celebrated

    3. Havel was a Bishop of the Way of White, a prestigious position of power and authority. Despite being a human, Gwyn and the establishment of Gods granted Havel this title.

    Obviously, Gwyn did not despise humans enough to deny them all of these things - as long as they proved their merit and loyalty.

    Oolacile

    Oolacile is quite a bizarre place when you think about it. It is a unique and developed culture of humans that dwells right outside the land of the Gods. However, it seems clear that Gwyn made no attempts to quell or temper their culture. In fact, they seemed to interact with one another frequently.

    From the Purple Coward's Crystal, used in the Battle of Stoicism in Oolacile;

    Victory in the battle once led to ancient Anor Londo, but even in the absence of its overseer, capitulation is a disgrace. In the name of a warrior's honor, do not quickly resort to use of this crystal.

    Clearly the people of Oolacile were subservient to the Gods, as all cultures during the Age of Fire were. However I think it's fair to say that they never suffered beneath the Gods. In fact, they thrived quite strongly up until they were consumed by the Abyss by their own hands. The fact that a human culture so close to Gwyn's home town tells me that his supposed hatred of man was not as extreme as most imagine it to be.

    The Four Kings and New Londo

    But maybe that is too weak for most. Edge cases, that don't show the whole story. Fair enough, but there's another culture that I think we need to talk about - New Londo. And we first really need to be clear just what exactly New Londo was. From the Crestfallen Warrior;

    It was once an Undead city. You may find a clue or two.

    This a bombshell of information. Most people who first play the game probably assume he simply means that the city is now home to ghosts, a type of undead. But the past tense here is critical - before it was destroyed, the inhabitants of New Londo were mostly undead.

    So Gwyn not only tolerated a perfectly 'normal' human culture outside his walls, he even fostered a whole city of undead humans within his own kingdom. Undeath that only began to occur as the fire started to fade, mind you. The relationship here was clearly amiable, considering the city borrows its namesake from Anor Londo. Clearly New Londo was a culture striving for greatness and was allowed to do so. Per the Key to the Seal;

    The Sealers flooded New Londo to banish the Darkwraiths and the Four Kings. The agonizing decision was made with the realization that countless lives, and the robust culture of the city, would be lost. The victims now roam the ruins as ghosts.

    New Londo was not some secretive cult town like the Sable Church. It thrived under the direct eye of Gwyn. And let us not forget the most important detail. From the Soul of the Four Kings;

    Soul of one of the Four Kings, who fell to Dark. A fragment of a Lord Souls discovered at the dawn of the Age of Fire. Lord Gwyn recognized the foresight of these four great leaders of New Londo, and granted them their ranks and the fragments of a great soul. Although this is not a full Lord Soul, it can still satiate the Lord Vessel

    Gwyn not only allowed New Londo to thrive, he gave a very portion of his soul to their leaders. The Kings, who again, were undead men. I always found it humorous that Kaathe speaks of how oppressive and evil Gwyn was to mankind, as you stand on the very evidence that humanity was indeed allowed to thrive under his direct approval.

    Now of course New Londo fell to the Dark in time, but flooding that followed was not under Gwyn. From the description of his armor;

    Lord Gwyn, bearer of the ultimate soul, divided that power among his clan before linking the flame. When he departed, he left only with his greatsword, his garb, and the crown, now bereft of power. He kept his crown perhaps to preserve a symbol of the monarch, for its actual power had fully subsided.

    Gwyn's divvying of his soul occurred shortly after he left to link the fire. The fact the Four Kings retained this soul can only mean that their fall to the Dark occurred afterwards, and the decision to flood the city was after his departure as well. In fact, much of the overt cruelty towards humanity and the undead seems to have occurred only after Gwyn left to link the fire. Allfather Lloyd undead hunts being a good example. Per the Lloyd's Talisman;

    Talisman utilized by Allfather Lloyd's cleric knights to hunt down the Undead. Blocks Estus recovery within a limited area. In the outside world, the Undead are accursed creatures, and Lloyd's cleric knights are widely praised for their Undead hunts. This blessed talisman blocks Undead recovery, allowing the knights to fight with impunity.

    Now what sort of character than was Gwyn really? Was he really a total human hater? I think we've proved now that false enough.Gwyn hated one thing, and really one thing only - those that challenged his rule.

    Gwyn had no qualms warring against the Witch of Izalith, his fellow god of creation, when she brought the chaos flame and its demons into the world. Conversely, Gwyn had equally no qualms giving Seath - a dragon - full honors and titles for his secrets shared to wipe out his kin. Even when this incurred the ire of his allies and friends. Gwyn truly was the ultimate pragmatist. He was incredibly generous with his allies, and ruthless with his foes - regardless of their kind.

    Humanity was no exception. Those humans that were subservient to him were honored and treated greatly. It was only when man began to temper with their Dark soul, and unleash its wild potential that Gwyn began to act with a firmer hand. As long as man controlled their Dark soul by burning its excess in service of the First Flame, Gwyn had no qualms. Here we can see where New Londo's bonfire was prior to the flooding.

    The dark sign itself too seems to have only emerged on the undead after Gwyn linked the fire. It seems to be a manifestation of the First Flame's artificial extension, desperately trying to curb the coming Dark in real time. Really though - the dark sign does not cause the undead curse. Undeath after all is just a symptom of the Age of Fire ending, as the power of Death (Nito and his soul) wanes. It's a curse, only because the outside called it that.

    Now of course there's the elephant in the room (it's always the same elephant) - Dark Souls 3, and the Ringed City. Here we some seemingly contradictory evidence to what I am proposing - ancient man locked away, their warriors dishonored, left to be forgotten. But again I would argue that the Ringed City has more nuance going on than we at first imagine.

    Yes, the particular human warriors who forged arms in the Abyss were forgotten. But as we've seen, humans themselves were not wiped from the annuals. Simply this aspect of them, this potentially dangerous sect of men who manipulated in forces that could harm the Gods. Scummy and villainous sure, but again it was not out of a hatred of man, but rather a hatred of threats to his rule. Humanity was not singled out more than any other actor on the cosmic stage. And let us not forget the Gwyn gave the Pygmy Lords his own daughter, for her to serve as a living bulwark against the march of time. That seems like quite a boon for anyone, especially as the world is nearing its natural close. The Ringed City might have been a gilded cage, but it certainly was far better than what could have been offered instead.

    Again I wish the emphasize that Gwyn is not by any means absolved his crimes. In the end, the suffering of the world comes from his stubborn refusal to let his power fade and share his authority. His manipulation of mankind as whole was traitorous, but understandable given his position and having seen the rampant power of the abyss. But Gwyn as a character - while villainous - was not as cartoonish or stupid evil as most imagine him to be. Gwyn did fear the potential rampant dark in man, but man or even the undead were not something he despised with any unique malice.

    tl;dr: Gwyn did not hate humanity, and gave many gifts and honors to those humans beneath his rule. Gwyn despised the dark and its potential that was within man.

    [SPOILER] I killed Siegmeyer

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 11:40 AM PDT

    1st time playing the game and 1st soul game.

    Siegmeyer and Solaire are the NPCs I like the most, and I read somewhere that they can die if you do or don't do something during their quests.

    I read some spoilers for their quests (thankfully it wasn't too late) so I could save them. I delayed my run through Lost Izalith just so I could prepare everything.

    But when I found Siegmeyer, only knowing that I had to kill those ugly eaters before they kill him, I talked to him "hey dude! How you doing?"

    I kept talking to him since I didn't know how the talk would go... and suddenly he was like "I have an idea to repay your help, I will distract those things and you can escape during that chaos" and I was like "wait, no! Wait wait!!!"

    He threw himself into the pit, of course I followed him and started throwing my pyromancies like there was no tomorrow... I didn't think about it properly... just spammed R1... and of course he died...

    Pain.

    After killing the last eater, I felt so bad, not only I didn't realize that talking to him would trigger him jumping there, but also I just spammed chaos fireballs, those hit like a truck... so most probably Siegmeyer didn't die because of the eaters, but because of me...

    I killed him and I feel really bad about it.

    I also got the sunlight maggot before Solaire, so he is there depressed because he couldn't find his sun...

    Not only I made one of my favorites NPC lose his dream, but also killed my other favorite NPC...

    Pain.

    If I ever play NG+, for sure I will save Siegmeyer and probably will let Solaire succeed his dream, even if I have to take his life later...

    thoughts about humanity, hollowing, and the dark sigil

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 01:41 AM PDT

    this was originally a reply to u/Schwermbo saying

    "The furtive Pygmy acquired the Dark Soul which Gwyn feared. The furtive Pygmy was named such because he spread the seeds of the darksoul amongst man. Gwyn didn't want an age of dark so he made a deal with the Pygmy Lords and put a curse on them sealing away the dark and giving man a fleeting false form. Mans true form is that of the hollows. The entire series is us struggling against this curse in an attempt to break it."

    under this post https://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls/comments/p23vrz/who_is_the_furtive_pygmy/

    TL;DR : i see humanity and hollowing as fundamentally opposed due to the fact that they cancel each other out, but am willing to change my mind

    my only issue with the idea of humans being hollow as a natural state is the fact that "The darkness of humanity seeps from this bottomless pitch-back hole, the gap filled by the accumulation of the curse." in reference to the Dark Sigil, which are what causes hollowing, at least in DS3

    humanity is what keeps you in a non dried bacon state, and hollowing removes that humanity through the dark sigil or simply it leaving the body as time/death happens;

    therefore, i believe what gwyn did was create the curse and the sigil, accidentally or not, through extending the age of fire, and that sealing away/removing the Dark (humanity) is what causes hollowing. humans are now destined to sacrifice humanity to the flame to stay human, they are Linked to the Fire, if you catch my drift.

    it could also explain hollowing as "losing hope that the age of dark will come" on a primal level, like this is what Humanity is looking forward to, and the fact that it was denied makes them lose hope, their reason, which is also what causes an individual to hollow, on a smaller scale. does that make sense ?

    basically, i believe gwyn has something to do with causing the undead curse and hollowing, and that it is contrary to humanity's nature entirely. it also makes Gwyn an incredibly impactful villain in the story, which i like.

    Now, i agree that the opening cutscene from DS1 does present other possibilities more similar to what is usually accepted :

    - everyone started out as a hollow , lords, gods or humans the same, but the presence of a fragment of the dark soul might be what defines Humanity.

    -Hollowing might be a natural thing that happens at the end of an Age of Fire (as seen in both Lordran and Drangleic) when the dark settles again, and the reason why only humanity is affected by it afawk is because the gods kept their souls through the linking of the fire (except Gwyn, but he returned his soul to the flame, thus his hollowing), and because everyone keeps wanting to link the fire (for understandable reasons). but then that would imply humanity's true form is indeed hollows.

    then again it could also mean that humans now subsist on ages of Fire, since they're (wait for it) linked to fire and have lost their connection to the dark (ergo the abyss being a corrupted force that twists humans into what we see in oolacile). maybe the Dark, which would be somewhat sentient, has to reclaim humanity through hollowing the people who inherited it before so it can grow stronger again ?

    one of the explanations could just be that the age of dark would be more like the age of ancients, and that it has nothing to do with humanity, and that kaathe lied to us, which makes a lot of sense too

    TL;DR 2 : i'm sorry for the erratic ramblings
