People hate this game because they haven't played it or finished it

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 08:06 AM PDT

I recently beat DS2 and its dlc content for the first time and found out that so many people think its awful. Whenever you ask someone about why, they respond with "its graphics, the rolling sucks, and Iron Keep is right after earthen peak." This opinion on DS2 is kinda echo chambered everywhere, and when I ask them what do they think of amazing areas like the dlc areas, they have no idea what im talking about.

So, I feel like people judge ds2 way too harshly for opinionated reasons that aren't their own.

Does anybody else find that the majority of DS2 haters are people who won't even bother to play it?

(I know it's not perfect and not liking it is fine, not my business, just curious.)

    Just beat dark souls 2!

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 06:26 AM PDT

Just beat the game and I wonder why other dark souls fans don't like it, I really enjoyed playing it and don't see the reason of why others don't like it. It was the first souls game I ever beat without using a YouTube guide so it took me around 50 hours to complete on my own.

Compared to dark souls 1 this game was easier in my opinion and I'm a underwhelmed at how easy the final boss was, I was soul level 128. Though the most difficult boss in this game for me was the Smelter demon by far.

I didn't do the DLC even though I bought the scholar of first sin copy, I just couldn't figure out where to go to access it, so In my next DS2 play through I'll search it up so I can get my money's worth.

Well now it's time for dark souls 3!

Finished Dark Souls II for the first time. It's probably the best souls game (is that a hot take in this sub?)

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 08:28 AM PDT

I think the most interesting thing about Dark Souls II is that it feels so unique and tries to be different than its predecessor. Maybe it's just me, but Dark Souls III just feels like Bloodborne but with shields instead of guns. It might be the most polished and refined Souls experience, but it lacks originality to me.

(Despite the title, on most occasions I probably tell people I like all FromSoft Souls games equally as they all do different things better and worse than each other, but DS2 holds a special place in my heart.)

One of the things DS2 gets a bad rep for is its map design. Yes, none of FromSoft's other games reach the heights of DS1's map layout, but DS2 individual levels themselves blow DS1's out of the water imo. Each area feels distinct both thematically and gameplay-wise, with some levels legitimately feeling like a puzzle game; environmental interactions like the snowball shortcut in Eleum Loyce or connecting paths via trees, Shulva is straight up a Zelda level, balancing the gameplay between combat prowess and managing your visibility with torches (which as a mechanic I loved besides the consumable resource aspect). Honestly, the lighting mechanic made DS2's version of FromSoft's infamous swamp levels actually fun. The atmosphere created by the stunning imagery in DS2's levels is also unparalleled. One of the things I love about FromSoft's level design is the use of distinct, memorable iconography to help the player coordinate and orient themselves within a level (the crucified werewolf from Bloodborne's first level is a prime example of this). I bring this up because DS2 does it so well in some levels like No Man's Wharf's goddamn pirate ship (did I mention how creative this game is yet) and the cathedral in Eleum Loyce's huge level. On top of that, there are QoL improvements like most levels having a bonfire either super close or right next to the boss door (which DS3 seemed to reverse) and new, interesting ideas like Pharros lockstones and the genius idea that is bonfire ascetics. All in all, with the sheer variety of content DS2 had to offer I was always giddy with anticipation when I was about to enter a new level.

Side note, Majula is the best hub area in the franchise. That has to be a unanimous opinion, right??

Another thing DS2 gets a bad rep for is the bosses. This is seriously blown out of proportion. With the amount of hate given to the game because of the bosses I was going in expecting every fight to be like the trio fight in the Sunken King dlc. But as it turns out there are a lot of great boss and enemy designs. I think the issue is that having that having a larger number of generally smaller areas resulted in there being too many boss fights, some of which aren't as memorable as others. Sure, there are some lackluster fights, but that's exactly how I felt about DS1 as well. They're obviously (mostly) not the same quality as Bloodborne's and the games that came after, but I just wanted to point out that they're really not as bad as people say.

The one thing people say about DS2 that I can, to a certain extent, agree on is that its self-contained story and lore is probably the least interesting in the series. There are definitely some highlights, like the conflict between Vendrick and Nashandra and generally the dlc lore being super interesting. Although a lot of the game boils down to: this thing has been lost or forgotten, if you (or Vaati) really think about it, the themes of cycle and inevitability the game discusses really feel like it's meant to be a continuation of the ideas DS1 introduces, which is super cool to me. In fact, I think all three games should be played in order and not the common suggestion of playing DS1 --> DS3 and DS2 whenever.

    In conclusion, fuck huntsman copse.

    Playing with no Hud

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 09:31 AM PDT

Now this isn't for everyone but I can't recommend this enough to veteran players looking for an immersive challenge.

The way I do it is find either the blue, or red tearstone ring. One in belfry luna, one in secret wall in forest of fallen giants in balista room. Set up your spell and item order, remember the order. Enjoy! It is really much more doable than it seems, just takes a little getting used to and there is no set rule like you can't turn it back on when you need it. I've done it for the majority of a champions run in the past and I turn it back on for bosses usually or to occasionally check my hp. If you have enough max hp and armor you can 90% of the time get the tearstone ring to light up before you die.

So I started this a couple years ago screwing around because I hated the huge hud, mainly the target icon, and enemy health bars. There were a lot more customization mods on base ds2 with gedasato to adjust this.

Last night I decided to try it on my new run so far deathless. and did No Man's Wharf... It was so immersive it was intense trying not to die, but cleared it in one run up to the boss. Things like this and no bonfire runs make finding lifegems a god send as well. Adding a little weed makes it even more fun.

    Iron passage

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 05:53 AM PDT

Fuck the iron passage! Seriously who the fuck designed that ridiculously hard area?! I have defeated all bosses in dark souls 2 except for the blue smelter demon because the run up to is so absolutely brutal that I could never even begin the fight. It's mainly the miracle casters that inhibit your movement for what seems like an eternity and then proceed to blast you with lightning attacks until you die. Anybody have a good strategy on how to make this run a lot easier?

Also I have done the gate shortcuts before but guess what? The casters are right there always and do the same spell on me to limit movement and then take me down.

    Fun weapons/spells for a INT/FTH build?

Going for my second playthrough, and decided to try a caster with both int and faith to use all spells. What are some fun (not necessarily top tier) weapons and spells to try? Also which catalysts are the best?

What do you think of the Blue Smelter Demon fight?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 05:09 AM PDT

First time playing SOTFS, just defeated Blue Smelter Demon. Gave me some trouble, died 11 times (this is my fourth soulsborne game, so 11 times is quite a bit). That is equal to all my boss deaths from the Sunken King dlc (Sinh 5, Elana 4, Gank Squad 2), and it's also one death below my currently most struggled boss (Executioner's Chariot 12).

Usually I'm not a big fan of reskin fights. I think DS1's Asylum demon reskins are atrocious, and I like Laurence less than the other Bloodborne dlc bosses. I did still enjoy this boss though. The fight reminds me a bit of Ludwig the Holy blade. Both fights give you small windows to attack and heal, and require you to know the boss' moveset well to dodge their onslaught of attacks. Of course Ludwig is the far superior encounter, but I still thought this boss was quite good.

That being said, the run up to the arena is completely disgusting. So far I've been lukewarm on the Old Iron King dlc, especially after the Sunken King dlc, which I thought was fantastic. I haven't fought Sir Alonne or Fume Knight yet, but two bosses aren't going to change how meh I am about the level. It doesn't seem as visually impressive as Sunken King, and ganks are quite annoying (this is coming from someone that usually likes ganks). I still look forward to the Ivory King dlc.

If anyone can give me some tips on how to proceed with the Old Iron King dlc that'd be great. I just killed Blue Smelter Demon but he didn't drop anything useful.
