A hardcore ruleset for Dark Souls games

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:27 AM PDT

So I was thinking about a potential self imposed ruleset that would make Dark Souls games even more challenging, a "hardcore mode" if you will, so I came up with the following rules:

    1. Healing:

. No estus flask usage is allowed, usage of other consumable healing items such as lifegems in DS2 is also forbidden.

. Healing from other sources such as spells and equipable items are allowed. (Ashen estus in DS3 is allowed)

    1. Humanities = Lives.

. The player is required to use a humanity/effigy/ember immediately after dying.

. Humanities may not be used for healing in combat (I wouldn't advise doing this anyway).

. If you run out of Humanities/Effigies/Embers and then you die, your character is considered dead, the game is over and you must start again from the beginning of the game (or give up).

    1. In regards to farmable humanities:

. In DS1 any humanities obtained from infinitely farmable mobs must be consumed immediately and do not count as an extra life. this allows you to farm for humanity but not for infinite lives.

. In DS2 and DS3 any effigies/embers obtained from infinitely farmable enemies must be discarded or sold immediately.

    1. You may only level up 5 times for each boss you have defeated.

    2. You may only upgrade your weapons/armour one stage for each boss you have defeated.

    3. The game must ALWAYS be played in offline mode for obvious reasons.

    4. Summoning NPC's is not allowed.

If you have any thoughts or questions about this, or ideas for other rules then let me know.

Do the horses in Frigid Outskirts respawn?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 10:57 AM PDT

So I know that if you kill an enemy about 12 or somewhere around that, they stop respawning. Does this apply to those horses? Cause I'm sick and tired of being harassed by those horses while trying to get to the boss fight.

Made a character just to help other players. What area players tends to need aid the most and where can I be useful?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:21 AM PDT

I have the Agape Ring and I'm pretty much settled at aroun 120k SM. Have as well joined the Blue Covenenant to assist further. But not quite sure where people could use a hand the most and where the optimal SM would be to do that.

So far I can see players in Forest of Fallen Giants, Heide's Tower of Flame, Lost Bastille and No Man's Wharf. (as well these are the only places I've been.

Is there something I'm missing or should be doing? This run is solely to co-op randoms and kill time, so anything that ends up in that goes.

    Why won't Vendrick fight me?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:15 PM PDT

I killed the guy before him, and I need to kill Vendrick for an achievement but he won't aggro or die no matter how much I hit him.

Dark Souls 2 easier than I remembered?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:46 AM PDT

To start off I respect and love the souls franchise as a whole. The community is by far the greatest, like no other. The PVP is godly compared to any other game and Dark Souls touches a part of my soul no other game has come close to achieving.

So I recently bought SoTFS after taking a 4 year break. Ds2 was my first option to get back into the souls series mainly because my old account had 1,000+ hours on one save file. I missed the PVP, the hello and thank you, the cheese builds, the mage builds. Slashing health bars with the cursed great sword and parrying people into oblivion with my Eleum Loyce.

The game used to be incredibly fun so much so I'd spend all waking moments invading and helping people and just having an all around incredible experience.

My recent play through felt stale compared to what I remember. For starters the enemy's felt so slow and dumb I was pretty much able to steam roll everything until I reached the DLC and even that was easy. For NG I thought it would be harder but after beating all bosses, beating the game and getting all crowns and the blessing only 50 hrs in I just put the game down I don't feel that same ember inside like I did before. Maybe I'm burnt out on 2 but it's still a colossal game in the franchise. Just felt like a wholesome cake walk this time around.

A good question for everyone would be; what makes YOUR play though fun and enjoyable?

How, in your experience, do YOU mix it up and make it fun?

    "Jolly Sun-gal" - Low Soul-Memory Journey + Build

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 07:56 AM PDT

I might be late to the party, but I've been having a lot of fun lately doing a twink build for the purposes of low-level Heirs of Sunlight co-op. I thought it'd be helpful to document all of my steps, as a guide for anyone who might want to twink a low soul-memory character and want to know the details from a live playthrough.

If you see my summon sign in game, feel free to summon! ("Jolly Sungirl" is the IGN, and I am usually around Lost Bastille / Heide / Forest of Fallen Giants areas.)

Desired end-state of build is here: https://soulsplanner.com/darksouls2/14987

I will keep updating this build and post as I go along. This is only my 2nd challenge, right after my no-shields run, so please don't expect anything crazy; I am at the "got okay" step of "git gud." If you have any tips or suggestions, let me know!

    LIVE BUILD

Objective: Efficient Heirs of Sunlight support twinking - to have fun crushing early-game bosses for people

End State of Build: Soul Memory Tier 6 - between 50,000 and 69,999 souls

    • 14,800 souls for Raw +5 Santier's Spear
    • 38,400 souls for leveling
    • 2,000 souls to open gate to Huntsman's Copse (optional if killing Licia)
    • 5,000 souls for Agape Ring
    • Total: 60,200 souls to complete build; leaving 9,700 to make mistakes with, upgrade Pyromancy Flame, buy items/rings (ex. Name-Engraved Ring), or play around with

    Currently playing status:

    • Raw +2 Santier's Spear (broken) (3 Twinkling Titanite from 2 slain Pursuers in Lost Bastille + 1 Twinkling Titanite from McDuff's chest)
    • Watchdragon Parma (from Heide drake)
    • Desert Sorceress Set (farmed from Harvest Valley)
    • ~42,000 soul memory, at SL 31

    Up next

+ Retrieve Fragrant Branch from Harvest Valley

+ Farm Lion Warrior Set from Shaded Woods, and attempt fall into Majula Pit with full Lion Warrior, to avoid buying Jester Tights + Silvercat Ring

+ Defeat Gutter Denizen in the Gutter to get Black Witch set

+ Use Small White Soapstone to farm Smooth Silky Stones to trade to D&T for Twinkling Titanite?

Completed Progress (from latest to earliest)

    1. Started as Explorer for some early Adaptability and a spare Pharros Lockstone; gift was the Petrified Something on my account for a lucky trade with Dyna and Tillo, but a Bonfire Ascetic would have been 100x better. I regret.
    2. Avoided all enemies to Dragonrider
    3. Killed Dragonrider with puddle of water (+12,000 souls); used souls from the boss kill to level up, popped some souls from inventory to leave little behind
    4. Avoided all enemies to Flexile Sentry
    5. Killed Flexile Sentry with Morningstar +0 (+14,000 souls); used souls from the boss kill to level up
    6. Retrieved Fragrant Branch from No Man's Wharf house (for Straid)
    7. Reached Straid with 28k soul memory; farmed 5,000 souls for Agape Ring from mummies; picked up Parrying Dagger along the way
    8. Equipped Agape Ring (~33,000 soul memory) - removed ring only to level up for needed stats or weapon enhancements / infusions. Unless otherwise stated, all boss kill souls are forfeited from this point onward. Souls are farmed in a controlled manner from mummies near Straid in Lost Bastille.
    9. Retrieved Fragrant Branch from Lost Bastille (for Rosabeth of Melfia)
    10. Picked up Craftsman's Hammer and other items in Lost Bastille
    11. Picked up a Raw Stone from the Basilisk at the entrance of Shaded Woods; less lucky players will have to wait until Harvest Valley
    12. Retrieved Chloranthy Ring +1 from Shaded Woods
    13. Killed Najka with Craftsman's Hammer +0
    14. Picked up Santier's Spear in Doors of Pharros; broke the spear at Dyna and Tillo
    15. Retrieved Stone Ring from the Ogre in Things Betwixt
    16. Failed the Pursuer kill on top of the ruined fort in FoFG
    17. Picked up White Soapstone from Pate by attacking ambush from behind (made a left from the ladder near the courtyard where the hollows are attacking the dead Giant tree)
    18. Killed Last Giant with Santier's Spear (broken) +0
    19. Killed Pursuer with Parrying Dagger + ballistae; retrieved Ring of Blades
    20. Killed Pursuer 2x in Lost Bastille for Twinkling Titanite; upgraded Santier's Spear to +2 and infused Raw (39,000 soul memory)
    21. Killed the Heide Drake for the Watchdragon Parma to boost item discovery
    22. Farmed 30 Alluring Skulls from mummies
    23. Gave 2,000 souls to Licia to open the path; more skilled players can kill her at Heide's (41,000 soul memory)
    24. Killed Skeleton Lords with Raw Santier's +2 and Alluring Skulls x10
    25. Farmed for a few pieces of the Desert Sorceress set
    26. Joined the Heirs of Sunlight covenant in Harvest Valley

Farming Loyce souls, my summon is by the door

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 05:43 AM PDT

I killed the Ivory King before finding out that I needed him alive to get 50 Loyce souls to access Alsanna. I have since despawned all of the charred knights in the area, so being summoned is my only way to collect the souls. I tried the covenant but it makes them too hard to kill and the drop rate is non existent so not worth it.

I have 40 souls just need 10 more. Look for my sign, I'm the guy with curved nil greatsword and faraam armor by the big door to where Alsanna is. Cant miss it. I'll be camping here however long it takes to get the 10 Loyce souls

Open chest, don't pick up item, does item disappear?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:21 AM PDT

I opened the estus shard chest in no man's warf and apparently didn't pick up the item. Went back, item was gone, still don't have estus shard. Did I screw myself? Should I just restart?

I think Fume Knight is the hardest (fair) enemy I ever faced in a video game

    Posted: 31 May 2021 05:40 PM PDT

(Before I start, I ask you guys to resist the urge of giving me tips. I just wanna praise this masterpiece of a boss)

I'm coming from Bloodborne and DS1. I was breezing through the main game and, after easily dispatching the throne couple, I decided to give the Crown of the Old Iron King a try ("let's see if it's as hard as people say"). I was annoyed with how long it took to find the first boss, but it was worth it. Fume Knight has been kicking my ass for more than 2 hours now.

It's amazing how pratically everything that made DS2 bosses easy was fixed here. Against the other bosses, I could tranquilly use lifegems and stamina management was never a problem. Fume showed me how shitty LGs are mid fight and I regret not leveling endurance more. I was about to describe his absurd moveset, but who already fought him knows what I'm talking about, and for those who didn't, it's best to see in first hand. The only thing that ever come close to FK was Orphan of Kos, from Bloodborne.

And what's the best part? HE IS FAIR. There's nothing broken about him (maybe the damage?). I know I will beat him eventually. The only thing I don't know is if I'll be relieved or sad because it's over.

Appreciation post for the prowling magus and congregation

    Posted: 31 May 2021 09:34 PM PDT

This boss fight gets a lot of hate, and is considered to be one of the easiest bosses (died multiple times to it on my first playthrough) . For me , its of my fav bosses in ds2 main game for the thematic behind it , it shows how people can manipulate religion for their own purposes , the undead are worshipping the magius (He looks like a demon) and the priests are helping him , and notice that they are the most dangerous ennemies with their lightning spears and healing , a parrallel to the might and position priests had in the dark ages of europe. Even in the lore the magus used the fear and the messed up situation the villagers of tseldora were in after the parasityc spiders outbreak , to start his own religion . In conclusion this might be unintentional by fromsoft but i love this boss .
