Elemental Resistance of Every Enemy in the Game

    Posted: 27 May 2021 07:27 AM PDT

I've found the existing resources for enemy resistances to be imprecise, incomplete and often of dubious accuracy. And being mildly obsessive I took it upon myself to test every single enemy in the game to the best of my ability.

Due to a variety of factors, enemies can have different resistances to melee and ranged elemental damage. In those cases they'll be represented as [melee/ranged]. Percentages listed are the reduction value so 0% is full damage and 100% is full immunity. Methodology, links and more information under the table.

Enemies marked with a "*" are those only encountered in water, which lowers lightning resist and raises fire resist.

Values are rounded to the nearest whole percent.

    Raw Data

When testing I used a character with 99 in both Int and Fth. For melee damage I used different resins on a +10 Old Knight Hammer 2HR1. For spells I used Great Heavy Soul Arrow, Great Lightning Spear and Dark Orb from a +0 Black Witch Staff and Fireball from a +10 Pyromancy Flame. Varangian Sailors in No Man's Wharf are used as a baseline because they have 0 resistance to every type of elemental damage.

Red phantom versions of enemies have the same resistances as their normal versions.

In the base game there are really only 8 resistance tiers before other modifiers are applied:

    • 0% - Varangian weak. No other enemies have 0 resistance without outside help.
    • 10% - Super Weak.
    • 15% - Weak.
    • 30% - Average.
    • 50% - Strong.
    • 70% - Super Strong.
    • 85% - Don't even bother.
    • 100% - Immune. Only Salamanders are in this tier without outside help.

Once you get into DLCs and enemies added with Scholar, things get a lot messier.

With a few exceptions (which are listed) enemies of the same type will always have the same elemental resistances no matter where they are encountered in the game. There are also a number of environmental factors and situational modifiers that can affect resistances.

The simplest and most common is water. Even if you so much as step in a puddle it adds 30% fire resistance and removes 15% lightning resist. This directly modifies normal resistance, so for instance Bowman Guthry has 30% resist across the board, but in Doors of Pharros since she invades in water her lightning resist drops to 15% and fire resist raises to 60%. Another example are the Enhanced Undead in Sinner's Rise. They normally have 70% resistance across the board, but in water they have 'only' 55% lightning resistance and are completely immune to fire.

The second most common type of specialized resistance is DLC resistance. Every enemy in the DLCs including bosses but excluding Drakeblood Knights for some reason takes greatly reduced elemental damage from spells and arrows. There are also a fair number of enemies in the base game that have it too. Crystal Lizards, Forest Guardians, Razorback Nightcrawlers, Corrosive Egg Crawlers, the pyromancers by the Altar of Amana, Insolent Phantoms, the glowing Dragon Knight, and every NPC invader added in the Scholar of the First Sin edition like Forlorn and Armorer Dennis. The damage reduction isn't uniform across the board for some reason. I assume there was a lot of analysis and testing that went into the decision, but from my end it just looks like random numbers. The short version is that compared to their melee elemental resist, enemies with DLC resistance will take half or less damage from spells. Lightning is hit the hardest because of course it is.

Base game bosses (excluding the Prowling Magus and Royal Rat Vanguard) also take reduced damage from ranged elemental attacks. In this case it's a much more uniform 15% reduction, applied after normal resistance. This means that a boss with 0% melee resistance would have 15% spell resistance and one with 50% melee resist would have 57.5% spell resist. I assume this was added as part of the Great Spell Nerf back in the day.

In the Iron Keep invaders all gain a huge amount of fire resistance compared to normal. This also applies to the turtle bro phantom by Eygil's Idol, but not to red phantom versions of normal enemies. It doesn't affect the Bellkeeper invader or Mad Warrior so the effect seems to be restricted to the Iron Keep proper.

Wall Ghosts, Leydia Pyromancers, Witchtrees, and Darklurker have something I call Ghost Resistance. They take half damage from melee attacks, including elemental damage on weapons, but normal damage from spells. Except that Darklurker and the Witchtrees in Eleum Loyce have Boss Resistance and DLC Resistance on top of that, meaning they resist spells as well.

Witchtrees with chime arms are capable of casting Great Magic Barrier, adding 25% to their normal resistances. Luckily there's only 2 of them in the game.

Velstadt's phase 2 buff reduces all damage by 40%.

Ashen idols can give Ashen Warriors a buff that reduces all damage by 50%.

TIL Acid Surge has a use in PVE

    Posted: 26 May 2021 05:37 PM PDT

On a whim, I decided to try throwing corrosive urns at the knights in the Frigid Outskirts to see if their ability to reflect spells was based on Yorgh's RIng. After a few hits there were no ring breaking noises, but I heard a sound like stone breaking. I kept going until I ran out of urns, the stone break sound repeating a few times, and then tried casting some spells again. He was just as capable of reflecting spells as before, but he took more damage from the ones that connected.

Confused and intrigued I loaded up on Acid Surge and tried again. Once again after a couple casts there was a stone breaking sound. After a few rounds of that I tried spells and sword attacks and he took much more damage than usual from both, though the damage reduced over time.

Wondering if it only worked on human NPCs I went and tried it on a Sanctum Soldier with similar results. Going back to Things Betwixt for some more detailed testing revealed the pattern. Every break applies a debuff to the mob that makes it take ~5% more damage presumably from all sources. The debuff can stack with itself multiple times, but has about a 1 minute timer.

Doing a little Googling dug up this post from 5 years ago, so it's not just my game being weird. That post mentioned that bosses were immune, so I tested it a little. Ancient Dragon and Rat Authority are definitely immune, and I wouldn't be surprised if almost all of them are too. Combine that with Acid Surge's slow cast speed and low number of casts and that pretty much removes any practical applications it might have had. Oh well, at least it was sort of interesting for an hour.

TLDR: Acid Surge can debuff NPCs, but you'll pretty much never run into a situation where you'll want to.

The Guardian Dragon is probably one of the easiest bosses in the game that is still fun to fight.

I killed Duke's Dear Freja without dying for the first time

    Posted: 27 May 2021 11:11 AM PDT

No, i wasn't the first time i KILLED him/her, but it was the first i decapitaded and killed without dying.

Maybe this don't mean nothing for y'all, but it really is surreal for me (even more because in my previous runs i died many times to kill it), it really is an achievement for me

This was the most fun fight I‘ve ever had in this game and I love that for the first time, I can say that this Dark Souls 2 boss was really good. My hope has kinda been restored, I think I will check out the other DLCs as well :)

    Posted: 27 May 2021 01:04 PM PDT

I just died in my no-death run. Luckily I was only 1hr 40 in, but still hurt. I was too used to 100 agl, but the cleric I started with had low adp. Got too aggro with those old knights..... Feel like giving up already.... Any tips?

    Can somebody help me out?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 10:43 AM PDT

OK so I accidentally downloaded a save file rather than upload. Now I can't play with my best dark souls friend as we are 300k souls apart and can't summon :(

Can anyone please help me out and drop some souls for me?

Me and my friend were duping so we can give you souls back, just need them presently so we can co-op again!

Can I decide to give Rosabeth clothes later, or is it a then and now deal?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 06:06 AM PDT

Wanna give her some cool armor, but I also want to just save her for the pyromancies. Can I decline giving her clothes at the start and do it later?

    Rampart Spear rage thread

    Posted: 27 May 2021 03:36 AM PDT

The one with the crystals all over the back. You can't backstab. Spear has huge reach. Stabs you when in front. Swings hit you even when rolling to the side. Is fast and chases you down during heal. Huge health pool. Has ranged attacks. Shield blocks magic.

These are like mini boss fights. I hate their guts

why do people dislike this game so much?

    Posted: 26 May 2021 06:24 PM PDT

I've always heard this game was the worst one, which i guess i don't really understand, i mean i only started today but so far this game is great, it has some cool details like having a different idle/walking animation when you're low on health or when you're out of stamina, the backstab and reposite animations are also really cool and the fact that i can summon people even after defeating the boss is great, don't forget estus being your max amount you can have if you've been summoned after sitting on a bonfire, the lifegems are also really cool and useful. i don't really know the big differences between the regular DS2 and DS2SOTFS but so far i love it. so far i think its atleast a bit better than 1, 3 is still my favorite though i think but i'm definitely gonna miss the fancy animations and details when i'm going back to those games.

    Increase damage

    Increase damage

Hi guys I almost finished ng+ and I'm planning to start a new ng cycle with my current character but I feel like I should increase my damage a little bit more before doing it. Right now I'm at sl 220 and using non-infused +10 espada with rob+2, flyn, tdr and chloranthy ring and sacred oath as a spell buff. My question is how can I increase my damage more. Thanks for all of your responses.

When do ascetic resurrected bosses become too hard ?

    Posted: 27 May 2021 06:12 AM PDT

I want to use bonfire ascetics to replay my favorite fights like Sir Alonne, Raime and Ivory King but I'm afraid if I do this too much and get them to +5 and up they'll become too hard in ng+ and ng++ since they'll reach +7 (max) and have an enormous healthbar. Is there a recommended bottom line for ascetics on these 3 bosses ? I'm level 172 wielding the Greatsword with a mainly str build with a bit of dex btw but idk if that's enough to keep fighting those guys
