Return to Drangleic 2021 is officially on! Posted: 27 Feb 2021 10:36 AM PST Attention all Bearers of the Curse, the annual exodus 'Return to Drangleic' is officially starting! As shown in the previous post, the suggested guidelines for this RtD are the same as previous years!
In addition to the above, we would also like to strongly advise against using the Name-Engraved Ring during the event, unless specifically to play with a friend. And here are a few helpful resources to help you out along the way!
Edit: After PSN Service being down for a few days, the majority of PS4 and PS5 players on SOTFS are successfully connecting to the servers. If you are still experiencing issues, please refer to this discussion post. [link] [comments]

Dark Souls 2 brings out some of the best lore concepts in the entire series (Spoilers) Posted: 06 Mar 2021 12:23 PM PST Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 DLC spoilers ahead Also this post got long and convoluted very quick. So I apologize but I couldn't stop thinking of all this stuff and had to write it down somewhere. Aldia in particular, how he discovers the lie, the truth behind humanity and the undead curse. We don't even fully understand it until the Dark Soul 3 DLC, which I wonder if it was intentional considering how drastically the game tries to distance itself from Dark Souls 2. The story of Dark Soul 2 is one of you bearing the undead curse, a fate that has left you slowly losing your sense of self, desperate to stop the decay and become human or die as a human. Ironically, this is no curse at all, this is humanity in it's natural state. The humans of the world who have a sense of self, who are mortal, who have no dark soul, it is they who were really cursed as they are a product of the age of fire. They are essentially synthetically modified versions of humanity that have been created and continuously kept alive by the linking of the fire, out of desperation to return back to their natural state. Now this is arguably a good thing, just because I'm saying it's a curse doesn't mean this is bad, it is just that being undead isn't really an illness or oddity because they are returning back to the normal state of things, and the lives of the humans are a better description of a curse. But it's a lie all told by them, and as Aldia says "A lie remains a lie!" Our character wants to rid themselves of this curse, but now they are realizing that they are simply returning to the natural state of humanity, it may be hard to go back to "yourself" as you realize that was all a lie, and this entire time of hollowing hasn't been losing your sense of self, but gaining your true identity and losing the fake one. To go back is to live the lie, knowing the truth makes that a hard life to live. I think this is what drew Aldia to become what he is and do what he did. What I also find interesting in all this that is unique to dark souls 2, is that there is also a rejection to the dark side as well: Aldia says do you wish to seek light, darkness, or something else entirely? I think this is what dark souls 2 is all about, and in this regard it relates to dark souls 1 and 3 extremely, and I view it as the most important game in the series lore wise. Dark Souls 1 seems to generally point towards the light ending, and it's essentially canon that the undead links the fire as the dark souls 3 world can't exist otherwise. We're not told everything about the true state of things, and although there is definitely some doubt to this cycle I think the game overall portrays it as a good ending. In contrast, Dark Souls 3 is the foil of this, it shows a much darker side of the world and how the downfalls of the cycle. We learn so much about the game that lets us understand the dark so much better, to realize the fire fading might not be the worst thing in the world, and we may even seek it out. In response to both of these Dark Souls 2 feels like a deep interaction between these two themes. We know that seeking out to link the flame and continue the cycle is a lie, that the darkness is not as bad as it makes itself out to be. However, to seek out darkness in response is no better. Many of the characters in Dark Souls 3 like the twin princes wish to see the fire fade, but they do so out of spite for the fire, they wish to see an age of dark because of their hatred for the the fire. The problem with this is that it is similar to the issues of light, that they are seeking to control the cycle for personal reasons. I may even think the dark ending of dark souls 3 represents this, your character does it out of personal spite. After hearing the stories of so many others and realizing the reality of the situation, he hates the light and how his fate was forced into it, he wishes to end it all because he wants to see a world of darkness and end the awful acts that were done to keep the fire alive. This still isn't letting go and accepting, it would be a personal choice to end the fire and a desire to see darkness. Darkness is what naturally awaits humanity, it should be accepted but not sought, there should never be an attempt to directly control the cycle the world operates under. The bearer of the curse leaves because he accepts this, he knows that to seek this out or control the destiny of the world never works out. Virtually every story in these games, as well as bloodborne, points this out. The best future for humanity is accepting what is coming. Darkness on it's own isn't very great, but it allows for something new to be born, to evolve mankind. BoTC decides to not involve himself in the cycle, not to link the fire, not to usher in a world of darkness, but to leave it behind. To accept the world in it's natural order, to not live the lie that has been told, as that is the true shackles he carried, it was never the curse. The Chosen Undead sought light, the Ashen One sought darkness, and the Bearer of the Curse originally sought a cure and played with the idea of light and darkness, but ultimately left them behind and sought something else entirely. Once again I quote Aldia "Or do you seek something else entirely?" Finally relating this to the real world isn't done much but I think doing so makes things much more clearer. We often look at item descriptions to piece together cohesive bits of information, but I am going to make some larger general assumptions to highlight this all. The way we seek control over our own life is the way the characters in these games often seek control over the world. This general assumption and themes of light and darkness can apply to so many different aspects of the real world. Depression is something that I think of, it is a darkness we all wish to avoid, but sometimes we must accept our sadness and let it flow over us to process it and truly move on. Bottling your emotions and trying to force away your sadness is never the answer but it's something we often do because we don't have the strength to accept the reality of the situation. Similar to how humanity tells itself a lie and bathes itself in light thinking it to be answer but in reality the light is blinding them. Our natural state of things is to never be "happy" but neither is to to be sad. Those who seek darkness and become cynical are also foolish, to believe you can never be happy, to hate yourself so much and believe you deserve to feel this way forever, is cynical. Regardless what is most important is that you have the strength to carry on and not give up, to accept these emotions and have faith in your future, to not let the despair consume you and become hollow. Accepting your darkness, but having the strength to withstand it and accept a new age of light, is how we achieve victory in our own lives. By the way I'm not saying this what the game is about because it isn't. I don't think they decided to make a game about depression (well maybe they did when they thought about how hard to make it). I think they made a game about the light and darkness of humanity, which is such a broad subject that covers so many aspects of life it can be used to identify so many different things and I just picked depression as an example to illustrate this. Super long convoluted post that eventually lost it's focus and devolved into something else entirely, this is why I love dark souls lol. My point still stands that dark souls 2 really illustrates this idea as a whole and I think it offers such a good balance to the lore and themes of the universe. [link] [comments]
Make sure to enable "cross-region play"!! Posted: 06 Mar 2021 07:23 AM PST Now that the Return to Drangleic is happening and if you are maybe having trouble finding other players, make sure your cross-region play is enabled to maximize your probability of being summoned or finding someone to summon [link] [comments]

Best Bosses Overall in the Souls Series? Posted: 06 Mar 2021 09:28 AM PST I'm not a fan of the normal enemies and locations in this game. My least favorite of the souls games. BUT by far the best total collection of bosses. Both smelters, fume knight, sinner, Ava, Sir Alonne, The Rotten. It matters what kind of bosses you like though. I like the more humanoid bosses that require precision dodging. Plenty of those in ds2. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Mar 2021 11:34 AM PST At first I kinda disliked this boss, with all the poison and skin that destroys your durability. After trying it many times, using the Bracing Knuckle Ring, and learning the flying patterns, I really enjoyed it. Not sure if I like it as much as Kalameet or Midir, but it's still an epic fight. I made a video and it's long, so I don't expect anyone to watch the whole thing, but the last minute is quite epic, the last hit is the preview 😊 [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Mar 2021 04:27 AM PST Has anybody ever had Elana summon the pigs on them during her boss fight? Just curious as to how common it is. [link] [comments]

How much fun/practical is a melee/sorcerer build in DS2? Posted: 06 Mar 2021 01:57 PM PST How much fun and practical would a melee/faith-intelligence build be? Like, in almost all of these games I focus on melee (usually quality) with some pyro. Doing it now for my first DS2 play through. Love whacking things more (phrasing) while being able to shoot magic at things when I want [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Mar 2021 07:46 AM PST I liked this game.I've been having so much fun with this game after getting used to rolling until I reached brightcove. I hate this game so much now but I just finally passed that area. So I was doing a STR build but when I saw those spiders I instantaneously bought the lowest req bow, infused it with fire, upgraded it until I could oneshot those them. I've beat this area without a single one of the motherfuckers getting 50meter near me. The boss was surprisingly fine because the NPC I summoned did a phenomenal job at killing the torch-light-scared small spiders while I beat it as fast as I could. Please FromSoftware do not put any spiders in Elden Ring just like you didn't in dark souls 3. Just beat fume knight solo after 3 days of trying Posted: 06 Mar 2021 04:20 AM PST FINALLY! I jumped out of joy when I beat this fucker. Phew. He's currently the best boss I've faced in DS2 so far, and my struggle with him was similar with struggle with Manus. He hits hard, and dodging is a must, but he's fair. I'm SL 150 and the only way I was able to beat him was learning how to dodge all of his attacks and take a hit to avoid a deadlier UGS swing and to counter attack. Used a +5 Lightning Zweihander and sunlight blade made this fight a lot easier. [link] [comments]
Shrine of winter will not open. Posted: 06 Mar 2021 12:58 PM PST I've beaten lost sinner, freja, old iron king, and the rotten. Lit all of the primal bonfires, and activated the red orb after freja. I have over 1 million soul memory, not in NG+, why won't it open? [link] [comments]
What to get, moonlight greatsword or crystal soul spear? Posted: 06 Mar 2021 12:46 PM PST 30 int and fth 50 str and dex, u want crystal soul spear, it's more powerful but the sword seems cool too [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Mar 2021 12:34 PM PST I have a build idea for a gimmick character who would only ever deal fire damage, taking advantage of a handful of exploits to get the dark pyromancy flame super early. With the low cast counts of pyromancies I would need to make every cast count, though, which means becoming a wretch to get as much hollowing as possible and I have won a grand total of three 1v1s across all three games (not including the times I was using the giant doors in ds3 and the opponent clearly didn't know how they worked) so invading randos an extremely poor option for me. Does anyone know of ways to gain sin without needing to spend an unreasonable number of red eye orbs? [link] [comments]
Help Fragrant Branches of Yore are nonexistent Posted: 06 Mar 2021 12:24 PM PST I play ds2 sotf on pc, I downloaded the game through steam if that makes a difference. I've been to the body by the cardinal tower, the chest in no-mans wharf with the sleeping enemies, and neither have had branches. The only branch that I've gotten has been after I beat the Lost Sinner, which I used on Straid of Olaphis for boss weapons. Is this a glitch or something? Most importantly, will I have to restart lv. 79 Grunky. [link] [comments]
