Does anyone else find this series oddly cozy and dreamlike?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 11:50 PM PST

Since much of the story is left very vague it makes me feel like I am playing through some kind of obscure forgotten mythology from a lost civilization, with much of what we know left up to scholarly interpretation. It has a very almost dreamy quality to it, a lot of the areas follow a kind of nonsensical dream logic layout and NPCs alway remind me of someone talking to me within a dream. Something about the cadence they use and how gentle the voices can be. It's just very out of this world and ethereal at times. Plus the bonfires are cozy as fuck. I especially love the one in the Depths and how safe and comfortable I feel in that little torchlit sewer room. Anyone else feel this way? For a game series that's known for its difficulty it's surprisingly chill and relaxing, and never even really forces you to do anything you don't feel comfortable doing. I'm currently playing through DSR for the first time (I've beaten DS3 previously) and just love it so much.

I found Nito by accident. Tomb of the Giants is worse than Blighttown.

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 07:48 AM PST

Pretty straightforward post of me bitching:

The Catacombs were easy peasy, Pinwheel had me lolling, dead in 3 hits....

As for the Tomb of the Giants? Cancer. Holy HELL these quadro-ped skeletons are annoying as hell and wtf its WAY too dark down here! They pull aggro on you before you can even see them, and god forbid you target lock them to see a health bar running at you, you fall off the cliffs into oblivion.

I do have the lantern, but unless you hold 'offhand attack' it doesnt stay lit! You have to fight in damn near pitch blackness!

This zone sucks so much ass. Can't wait to just kill Nito and never come back.

Also, fuck Patches. I should've killed him immediately, but I didn't because I'm afraid to engage with NPC's after an accident at firelink shrine in my first 10 mins of gameplay.

    AGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

EDIT: NITO IS DEAD AND I KILLED PATCHES SO ITS TOO LATE STOP MAKING ME FEEL BAD :( HE DREW FIRST BLOOD!!!

    Stuck in the painted world?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 11:22 PM PST

This is my first time playing Dark Souls and I was just in Anor Londo when this painting sucked me in. I decided to complete this area first so instead of using a homeward bone I sat at the bonfire.

Where I am at right now: I cleared the annoying skeleton wheelers underground. Got annex key. Defeated the monster on the long bridge, but its lower half is still blocking the bridge. Went to the annex and found black ember, velka's rapier and cleric armour set and a miracle. I also went to the highest point of the stairs, didn't finding anything special but at the bottom, the main door was shut closed by some contraption. I have collected all the shiny souls/drops I think. Where should I go to progress? The toxic enemies and crowmen are really annoying

    few extra souls

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 09:14 PM PST

Right after defeating a boss, if you are fast enough you can switch one of your rings to covetous silver serpent ring before you get the souls for killing the boss for a few extra (20%) souls. Don't know how it is on a controller but I could do it on pc pretty easily. Also the Symbol of Avarice stacks with the silver serpent ring (44% total) so you can switch your helm too if you are fast enough.

    Can invaders kill bosses?

Can you go in and kill a boss that the player is about to fight then fight the player in dark souls 1?

Iron Tarkus isn’t a catacombs invader right?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 09:36 PM PST

I had decided to take a trip down to the bone zone to visit Vamos, and as I was approaching the hidden bonfire I was invaded by someone named Iron Tarkus. It was an intense battle, each of us down to our last estus, when I landed a lucky backstab with my zweihander and ended our battle. To my friend, if you are on this server, thank you for a good fight, and if it helps, I died to skeletons moments after I beat you.

First time player. Just beat O & S!!!

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 04:07 PM PST

Holy hell, that was a hard but FUN fight! Took me 20 tries, but I loved it. This one was fun for me because it only took two or three tries to figure out what to do, after that it was just execution. It felt like each time I got a little bit closer.

Unlike most bosses so far, this one never got frustrating for me, despite the difficulty. I really loved the strategy and mechanics of fighting them both at the same time. Once I got the hang of their rhythms, it turned into a kind of dance. I couldn't wait to get back in there to fight them again.

Once I got to the point where I could put Ornstein down consistently, the fight started getting really fun. It was hair-raising in the best possible way. I wish I could fight them again right now!

So awesome. Looking forward to playing this game a second time, just to get back to this fight.

How far have you gone "blind" in the first time you played Dark Souls?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 03:44 AM PST

I was watching a stream where the streamer (https://www.twitch.tv/beastyqt) has never played Dark Souls. It was funny to see, he didn't know much about the mechanics of humanity, was afraid of Solaire, didn't know about the shortcut below Hellkite Dragon, didn't lock on enemies or use plunge attacks, and so on...

So I was wondering how much can you go blind in this game? There are some things that I cannot imagine someone discovering on their own. How far have you gone "blind" on you first playthrough and which places or mechanics were you amazed to discover?

Good first time playthroughs to watch?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 03:21 AM PST

I love watching people get introduce to Dark souls and seeing their reaction for their first playthrough, especially if they are invested and genuinely curious about the game, anyone know any lesser known or underrated examples of this?

Can you be invaded while your Summon Sign is down?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 02:52 AM PST

I have been sitting outside Quelagg's for a while trying to farm Sunlight Medals through co-op (if you can trade me any I would be grateful), and in that time I was only invaded once, when I removed my Summon Sign for about 10 seconds to see if there were other people trying to get summoned.

    Black eye orb

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 10:21 PM PST

Sorry for all the questions this is my first play through. So I'm far past ringing both bells, and having been playing the game with only a +2 estus flask so I thought it would be time for an upgrade. The black eye orb is supposed to appear at fire link shrine after you ring both bells, right? Well I don't see it where it's supposed to be. Am I missing something? Thanks

Lore question - Is everyone in Anor London Hollow?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 03:34 AM PST

Apart from the Fire keeper, the Giant Smith and Gwyn that is. I was just wondering why the White Knights, the Giants, the White Ninjas and Ornstein and Smough are actually trying to kill the player. As a true test? I don't know if that makes much sense. I got the feeling that everyone had stayed behind in Anor Londo to protect it but they've all gone Hollow and Gwyn is somewhat "trapped" in a sense. Is there any in game lore that explains it? Or is it simply just "it's a videogame so here are some enemies to fight".

    solo'd o&s in ng+2 first try

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 09:31 PM PST

I'm just bragging really. I have a lot of experience fighting them, granted. yet, I have never solo'd them before.

I was kinda just running through ng+2, killin bosses and moving on, when I realized I forgot to set solaire on his course to anor londo. it's not the first time I've forgotten to do that.

anyways, he wasn't there and I didnt even get the shortcut in sens so i didnt wanna go back for him.

I said screw it and went in to the fog, and I actually got them on my first solo try. ng+2 nevertheless

    that was a good feeling

Does leaving a covenant in remaster without going to Oswald do anything to your former covenant?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 05:40 PM PST

Does your rank with the covenant decrease if you join another covenant? Ex: being a sunbro then joining Dragon Covenant

    co-op boss areas

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 01:04 AM PST

    Hey,

My friend summoned me to help with the taurus demon, now he cant summon me as I understand it we've completed the boss for that area on his game.

Would he need to unlock the next bonfire before he can summon me for the bell gargoyles? Where is the next area?

Games like Dark Souls, but with more Survival Elements?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 09:14 PM PST

Just like the title said. I'm looking for games with some of Dark Souls' key characteristics: similar 3rd person combat, vague, but compelling environmental storytelling, that sense of obtuse mystery with the lore, etc. but with survival elements. As far as survival elements, I'm thinking like building campfires, needing to make shelters or eat/sleep, gather resources, etc.

Anyone know any games like this?
