Interview with Edge Magazine Issue 249. When Miyazaki announced to the world he wouldn't be director for DS2

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 04:10 AM PST

I was doing some research on DS2 for a discussion and for the life of me could not find this game interview anywhere. I decided to drop a few bucks and buy the scans. This interview is 8 years old but I figured some people in here might appreciate it

The Belfry gargoyles are the worst boss

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 09:08 AM PST

Seriously. i understand 2 gargoyles in ds1, or 3 at the same time, but when 5 of them gank you and your npc phantom dies before even the 3rd one shows up its impossible.

The fuckers cant even be staggered, they ignore everything. They hit like a truck. And when 5 of them stack on you, you just wont have enough stamina to dodge everything

They deadass wasted all of my 20 human effigies, i went broke, i used every weapon i could, tried poisoning them

I beat them once magically then used a ascetic to get a +2 golden serpent ring from them

My character is deadass lvl 135 and im still losing to them.

They actually made me quit the game.

    The CRAZIEST thing just happened

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 06:18 AM PST

I've started NG+3 recently and made my way towards the iron keep (a place that I hate). My ass was getting kicked and I was about to die, but I left an invasion sign on the bridge for some casual PvP. Just before I died, I was summoned to another world, and used Great Heal to fully restore my life before we fought (the other player was kind enough to let me do so - thank you!). Managed to beat him, and due to the way invasions work, I returned to my world with full health and estus to clutch the situation. Holy shit.

Frigid Outskirts makes me never want to play this game again

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 10:44 AM PST

Iron passage, memory of the old iron king, cave of the dead, all these areas were kind of annoying but this is just something fucking else. I have never experienced something this poorly put together in a souls game. Why do I have to go through 3-4 obnoxiously hard reindeer and a 5 minute trek to get back to a boss that's difficult enough on it's own? Just why does this area need to be in the game? It's so tedious.

I'm fine with difficulty in souls but this is just obnoxious. GG whoever designed this clusterfuck of an area because you've successfully made me want to drop this game and never come back to it.

    Burnt Ivory King... my thoughts.

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 01:30 PM PST

I just defeated this boss and as a result, am done my all bosses run in SOTFS.

I'm feeling really mixed on this encounter in particular. In my opinion, DS2 as a whole has a big problem with runbacks to bosses (wouldn't you know I made a post earlier when I was getting annoyed with the Frigid Outskirts, so maybe I just like to bitch and complain). I honestly think this one is up there as one of the worst "runbacks" in the game.

On one hand, the visuals and atmosphere are incredible in this fight and it's honestly one of my favourite moments (on the first go anyway) in any souls game I've played. On top of that, the boss himself is really fun to fight too, he has a cool and fair moveset minus a hitbox issue or two, and overall he's just a cool boss.

On the other hand is the single most bewildering flaw I've ever seen in these games. I genuinely don't understand how FROM decided that this execution of the boss was a good idea. That flaw being of course, the gauntlet of dudes before the boss. This damages what is otherwise a fantastic fight so much that I debated not even finishing it.

I have two main problems with this gauntlet:

One: the AI for both the enemies and your allies. I'm almost willing to forgive this one because I'm sure a set piece like this would have been a pain in the ass to get working in a convincing way on the souls engine. Anyway, the AI just does not function well. Your allies usually stand back looking like they have absolutely no clue what's going on, and the enemies usually target you pretending that your allies aren't there. Overall, the AI is pretty laughable.

Two: the fact that you have to do the gauntlet every single time you fight the boss. This right here makes literally no sense to me and I genuinely have no idea why FROM thought this was alright. It's fine the first, maybe even second go at the boss - after that, all I wanted was to be able to fight and learn the boss, and the massive wave of enemies just completely sucked the fun out of it for me. IMO the solution here was simple and utterly obvious: make the boss himself more difficult (a simple HP boost could've done to be honest, he was pretty weak) and make the gauntlet a one time fight. This would have elevated the king from a boss I am not really interested in fighting again to one of my favourites in the game.

Overall, the burnt ivory king is a really cool and fun boss that's totally annihilated by the stupid, tedious, bullshit that you have to do before every attempt against him. Please let me know your thoughts, do you agree? Or do you think the gauntlet adds to the fight? I'd like to see your opinions, and maybe the next time I fight him my opinion will change.

    Sunlight medal farming

    Old Knight mob cosplay

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 02:48 PM PST

I'm building an Old Knight character to do coop/pvp in Heide (mostly), and I have reached a bit of a dilemma.

I want to keep the SM as low as possible, so I have to choose between a few optimisation paths to make it a competitive build. Should I: 1. Level up VIT enough to reach a midroll (I'll have to go get the Royal soldier ring +1 and the Third dragon ring for that, but that's not a problem) 2. Level up Dex to be able to effectively wield all of the Old Knight weapons (the highest dex requirement is the Pike, with 20). This option is kinda not necessary because I'm thinking I'll leave Dex at 15 and use the Dexterity ring to use Pike and Halberd. 3. Upgrade all of the weapons to +10, so that all of them become viable. At the moment I only have upgraded the greatsword, and the cost for each weapon seems to be 13/15k souls 4. Upgrade the armor set to be very very resistant to any attack. Particularly useful especially if I'm stuck with the fat roll.

I am loving this project, especially after being able to drop all of the weapons of the set and armor pieces without farming much, so any opinion or suggestion is very welcome

    Thanks!

    Need a explanation (PvP)

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 02:26 AM PST

There's this one guy in the BoB arena, something is wrong about him, I can feel it.
The thing with him, other that his ridiculous adaptabilty, is how fast he pokes with the Chaos Blade RT.
Here's the thing, I have hundreds of hours of experience in PvP, I'm not good but I have a very powerful memory.
I know he's using the Chaos Blade and the ice rapier (also I can see the 50 HP loss) and I know he shouldn't be poking that fast.
And the fact that every duel he ends he does the edgy gesture is even more proof.
So what is going on here? I suppose he's doing some kind of glitch with the rapier moveset or some kind of animation cancelling, but I don't know for a fact. Any clue?

If you want footage, here it is. Take special note that when he uses the spear, he looses horribly. Also check out 0:17, 0:26, and 0:31. Pretty interesting huh?

How many torches in the gutter?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 08:09 PM PST

Keeping a mental head count so I'll know how many I have left as I light them, but somehow the basic question of how many there are total is eluding me. No googling finds this basic answer. I'd like to know when I've found the last one, you know?

Edit, it's 50, by my count.

Hi, I'm new to the sub. I need some weapon recommendations!

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 01:50 PM PST

I need a low-requirement high-damage and favourably early-game weapon. Gonna try out some invasions. High-lvl Invasions are super rare, maybe on lower lvls I'll have more of those.

Also, does your character level and weapon level influence your connection to anyone? Or is it soul memory only?

    Problem with control?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 01:14 PM PST

Hey guys so I recently started playing DS 2 scholar of the first on Xbox and I've had a really weird experience with controls.

Maybe I just really suck at the game but sometimes I have to press twice on the command for the game to actually do it which is so weird.

Happens mainly with healing, I increased ADP to level 17 but it still happens. It's not that it takes too much time to drink the estus it's that sometimes I will press B and nothing will happen. I thought for a while that I even needed stamina to heal.

So do I just really suck or is there anything I can do? Could it just be ADP or is it my controller.

Also for the record I finished DS1 and I never had this issue that's why I was wondering. Worst thing worst I'll just get use to it but it still sucks

    Thank you

Doing the math - Blue vs Black Knight Halberd Quality/Faith

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 01:02 PM PST

Heyo. I am currently in the halberd moveset groove. So fun to optimize and helps with ng+ gang fights.

Now, the halberds. Ring values are included

    Lightning Blue Knight Halberd +5

    • 343 + 92 physical
    • 146 + 36 lightning
    • Str:C, Dex:C, Fth:B scaling

    Flame Black Knight Halberd +5

    • 307 + 91 physical
    • 208 + 86 flame
    • Str:E, Dex:C, Fire:C

Running with RoB+2 and Lightning Clutch Ring (for Miracles).

Technically, Black KH outperforms Blue KH, because of its higher fire damage. The issue that I see is that more enemies are weak to lightning and resistant to fire than the other way around. Right now I am at 30Str, 40Dex, 3Int and 50Fth at level 210. Aiming for 40Str and 8Int (BKGS). So the higher I get, the better should Blue KH become in terms of it's physical portion. However, Black KH will always be ahead in terms of elemental damage.

So, opinions? Or you think other halberd are better for Quality/Faith? I am indifferent in terms of fashion souls when it comes to those two halberds.

    First Play through memory

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 04:39 AM PST

So DS2 was my first Souls game which I got into thanks to the TwoBestFriends play through. One of my favorite memories of the game came from my fight with the Skeleton Lords. I had been running through the zone, getting my naive butt kicked when I saw the fog door. Thinking I'd found the zone transition I ran into it, no estus or life gems. So of course I freak out seeing the boss. Lucky me my mace was pretty durable, and more so I had the restoration ring on. This proceeded about 30 mins of smacking a Skeleton with my mace, getting hit, running around to restore my health, and repeating. It wasn't the most glorious fight, but had me on my feet. When I finally won I had to go brag to my friends who didn't care XD.

Who else has dumb memories like this?

    Vanilla vs Scholar by area

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 05:53 AM PST

I've been watching LobosJr's original Dark Souls 2 run (I'm always curious about peoples' real first reactions to the games before they get colored by narratives and the broader opinions) and started up a new vanilla run myself for the first time since probably early 2015. It got me thinking about the differences between Scholar and vanilla area by area and I was curious as to what the sub thinks. Which areas do you think are greatly improved by Scholar? Which ones do you think didn't actually see much improvement or were actually better in vanilla? Similarly, any item or weapon changes in Scholar that you don't care for?

I haven't gotten too far back into vanilla but I think I actually prefer Forest of the Fallen Giants in vanilla. I love that first Heide Knight encounter a lot.
