Dark Souls A tale about Ash Lake and abuse

Dark Souls A tale about Ash Lake and abuse

A tale about Ash Lake and abuse

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 10:10 PM PST

Look I'm not going to go too in-depth, but I recently moved out of my moms and into my dad's. My mom starved me often because she "was too tired to go grocery shopping" when I wasn't allowed to eat any of her food. I am 6ft and was 117 lbs. She often made fun of me for being so skinny, and a few times got mad at me for it. Saying "people think I'm rasing a meth addict, I don't understand why you won't eat." I never argued back. I didn't want to get in anymore screaming matches.

My mom also hated dark souls for being polytheistic and "a simulation of murder with dark magic"

I w orked a job washing dishes for a short order kitchen. It was absolute hell. I was the only one born in the 2000s and I was also the only person who spoke fluent English in the back (not that I have a problem with people who speak spanish, but you have to work fast in a kitchen so misunderstandings are pretty hard to deal with). I didn't have a car so I walked to work and walked to get my checks cashed. I cashed my first check and decided to splurge just a little bit. I got groceries and a copy of DSR. I played the first 2 but never the original. I carried my food to my house (half mile walk with a bunch of groceries was hell) and the second I got home I downloaded it and started playing.

For every second I wasn't working or sleeping. I was playing dark souls.

From Assylum demon to Bed of Chaos (fuck bed of Chaos) I beat the game once, then twice, three times. Each time trying a new build (highly recommend strength and faith/pyromancy.) I was over joyed. I got to discover my own world.

It was like I was playing super mario galaxy 1 & 2 when I was ten. Always looking for more stars, even tho I'd 100% the game.

Then I remembered something, Ash Lake.

I had, not once in anyway been to Ash Lake (I try to play souls as blind as possible) so I loaded up my favorite character (Xanth, the warrior hobo pyromancer of blight town (yes I wrote my own lore for my own characters)) and searched.

Part of me really thought it was somewhere in ariarmis, then I tried new londor, blue looking places, also with all the water I thought new london was possibly connected (I was going off memory from an old ds1 video)

Eventually I found the great hollow. And after the climb down. I found it.

The uproarious chant. The crystal blue sky and clear water. The hydra. It honestly made me cry. I searched every nook and cranny. Up and down. Ash lake was so beautiful to me.

Dark souls and my hunt for Ash lake gave me a much needed respite from my day to day. And I'll never forget it. I encourage all of you to take a vacation to Ash lake. Find a cozy place near the shore line. Take off your armor and rest.

TL;DR: Me searching for Ash lake made me extremely emotional after finding it while living with an abusive parent.

I'll be answering any questions if any are had :)

The estus system has spoiled me

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 08:40 PM PST

Now whenever I play some other RPG, and the healing system is basically pausing the game to go to your inventory and select one of 200 healing potions, that is just such a downer. It's not something I used to mind at all but after playing Souls, I keep getting bothered by shit like this.

    ARTORIAS TAUGHT ME A LESSON

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 09:01 AM PST

As the successful little shield-wielder that i am, i thought i would walk in, slap this loser's butt and walk out. But I've noticed (as an experienced DS3 player, but first time playing DS1) that FromSoftware likes to do unique things with their DLC bosses, and evidently what Artorias is meant to teach you is that only freaken losers use shields.

After equipping grass crest +12, mask of the child, blooming green blossom, and having max stamina (50 endurance + ring of favor) i realized im missing something. The game was sending me a message with this fight. STOP BLOCKING YOU IDIOT.

So i slung the shield on my back and proceeded to beat him without using a single potion.

I didn't even T-bag, because i have a serious respect for this boss and the people who designed him. Thanks for (re)teaching me this lesson Dark Souls. On to Manus.

    Taurus Demon suicide

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 08:20 PM PST

First time playing DS1, made it through Undead Burg and bumped into Taurus Demon on the bridge. Kinda caught me off guard and I was excited for a good fight, but after I dodged his first attack he jumped off the bridge and died immediately. I assume this isn't supposed to happen? I just finished doing an all bosses NG+ run in DS2, and after the myriad of lame bosses I was hoping for some quality boss fights in DS1. Is there any way I can go back and fight him without having to finish the entire game first?

[META] Dear Mods, why can’t we have pictures here?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 05:16 PM PST

/r/Bloodborne allows it and they are flourishing. So why not here? I feel like it would be nice to see some screenshots of people's characters and fan art amidst the discussion posts.

I BEAT ORNSTEIN AND SMOUGH! WHAT A RUSH!

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 02:27 AM PST

I've never played Dark Souls before. I finished the PS5 remake of Demon's Souls and I'm really getting into the whole series. None of my friends play Dark Souls, so I had to vent here. I must have been about 15 tries deep.

Took in Knight Solaire, but he had a sliver of health left after the daft bastard ended up fighting the two shield giants in the main hall. Focused on Ornstein, kept dragging him away and slashing until Smough ran across with his hammer. Managed to get him and it was just me and the fat bastard. Played it safe, but got careless to the point where I was out of Estus Flasks and both myself and Smough had the tiniest bit of health left. He jumped up for his giant electric-arse attack, I dodged at the very, VERY last second. Ran up, started slashing and it was done.

Almost certain I woke up the entire street when I shouted, "YASSSSSSS! YA FUCKIN DANCER!"

This is the only good moment in this shitheap of a year since COVID started. Thank you, FromSoftware.

In my opinion, Kalameet is by far the most difficult DS1 boss.

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 10:57 AM PST

It surprised me how many people said Manus is the hardest, Kalameet gave me way more trouble.

Dark souls saved gaming for me.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 03:37 AM PST

I was bored of gaming, I would open up games hoping to get hooked like I used to when I was younger, but would end up turning the game off in under an hour. I assumed I had just grown out of gaming, or being an adult and working had killed my motivation.

    Enter Dark souls.

About a year ago I discovered Dark souls, thinking I would give it a shot but my expectations weren't high. I was wrong.

The first day I think I played for 10 hours straight, completely sucked into the world, I felt like I was younger again. It hooked me like my first playthrough of Star wars Knights of the old republic, or oblivion.

Since that day I think I've played pretty much exclusively dark souls games for a year straight, not getting bored even once. 10 hour gaming sessions became a normal thing again, and I loved it.

I loved the first playthroughs, the mystery, the wonder, being scared shitless of Black Knights. And you know what the best thing is? The second playthrough is just as good, because the second time round is completely different.

Running through the game confidently backstabbing and parrying the black knights, Killing bosses without dying, or even getting hit. The satisfaction is something I can't compare to any other game, and it keeps me coming back time after time.

Thank you Dark Souls for saving gaming for me.

And thank you to the community for being so awesome.

    Try finger but hole.

    Co-Op at the Duke's Archives

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 01:59 AM PST

Hello fellow undeads, I'm playing the switch version of dark souls in co-op with a friend. We are stuck at the Duke's Archives because we can't summon each other. There is no difference in level between us and we have not beaten any bosses in this area yet. How can we solve this situation?

Ps: sorry for any grammatical or syntactical mistakes, English isn't my first language.

Anything I need to do before going to Anor Londo? Any tips?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 03:48 AM PST

Just need to prepare. I've got a 10+ Claymore The Elite Knight armor set +1 and a Knights Shield +0

    I'm Level 42 : Vitality 23 Endurance 21 Strength 23 Dexterity 14

What should I get done before hand so I can have an easier time? Ive heard Ornstien and Smough are really hard. So should I upgrade anything? Get any weapons? Or am I good to go?

Is it just me, or did anyone else have a harder time with O&S than with Kalameet and Manus?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 03:08 PM PST

I'm not saying kalameet and manus weren't difficult, but I felt I spent a lot more time dying to the duo than those dlc bosses.

    Did people get bigger?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 06:45 PM PST

Before I played Dark Souls 3, Dark Souls was the only Souls game I had. I played through that and beat it. Now recently replaying Dark Souls 3 some things look physically bigger than in Dark Souls. For instance the Capra Demon corpses around Smoldering Lake look to be as tall as the Ashen one and not two times the height as the choses undead in Dark Souls. Also in The Old Demon Kings boss room the Asylum Demons don't look as large and imposing as they used to be. But the statue looking things that spew lava from Izalith still seem the same height? Another instance I saw was the elevator after Smough and Ornstein/Aldrich boss fights. The elevator seemed smaller then it was in Dark Souls. I don't know if this is evidence of some mass shrinkage or people evolved and grew in height. Please let me know what you think.

O/S is the true determination if you can beat this game

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 04:14 PM PST

O/S is the only boss that took me more than 10 tries. In fact it took about 30. I have beaten every other boss in under 5 tries after O/S. There's just no button mashing with O/S and it's super hard but very fair. Brilliant boss design and definitely the most satisfying boss. (I'm about to start the dlc but have beaten every other boss besides Priscilla and gwyn).

    Sens Fortress tips?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 12:34 AM PST

I'm going through sens fortress with Elite Knight armor set +1 Drake Sword +1 and a Knights Shield.

Yet when I walk through the doors I'm hammered by two Anthropomorphic Snakes and my damage is SO WEAK against them, it takes like 13 hits to knock one out.

But my Drake Sword is the strongest weapon I have. Anything I need to have an easier time in Sens? Ive tried my luck getting a Black Knight weapon but the Sword, the Greatsword and the Halberd didn't drop.

    PS - I'm level 37 with 20 VIT and 21 END

    Thoughts on Mr Gravelord Nito

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 04:02 AM PST

for me Nito was by far the hardest boss on my first play through (completed only a week ago) I lost half my health on the fall and usually just got chipped at by skeletons and finished with the wave attack. Manus was the only one who gave me a comparable struggle but I see him consistently rated as the hardest boss while Nito is usually low down

Guys I have a confession to make

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 03:29 AM PST

I actually kind of like the Lost Izalith and Demon Ruin's. I think the stages have a great aesthetic, they throw a ton of obstacles at you and have great secrets to discover. Don't get it twisted, the Bed of Chaos is one of the worst fights (the Dragon God was worse) in the franchise but no area besides that in the Lost Izalith gave me anywhere near the same sense of frustration.

I despise the Dukes Archives for being a complete slog overloaded with enemies and the 2 worst platforming segments in the series (Avelynn and Blue Titanite Slab I am looking at you) , I dislike the Tomb of the Giants cheaply throwing bulky skeleton's who can send you to a quick death and New Londo Ruins is... alright I guess I like the aesthetic.

I don't even mind the Centipede Demon boss fight if solely for the fact once you know about the hidden islet around the corner it actually makes the fight a lot more managable and dare I say fun?

Is Kalameet not supposed to make any sound?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 05:43 PM PST

I just fought him today for the first time in a while, and realized that aside from the music he did not make a single sound. Is this a bug or intended? Made me feel like I was back in izalith 😂

Just a little something I appreciate about Crestfallen Merchant (and other sad boys)

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 10:11 AM PST

EDIT: I meant the Crestfallen Warrior in Firelink Shrine! sorry for the confusion.

Like many others, I have an extra layer of appreciation for these games as it relates in some way to my depression. So as I listened to people like CW or Hawkwood, I realized how important they are. Despite being someone who has just about given up hope on not just his own fate but the world's, he makes a huge difference. The Crestfallen Warrior has helped many undead, and without him I think a lot of players wouldn't have been able to make it to their destination. This may be me projecting my own struggles with self-worth, but I can see how even just giving advice makes him important. Which makes it even sadder, as he doesn't see your quest to the end. Instead, like a self-fulfilling prophecy he turns hollow. To me it doesn't make him any less important.
