My weird strategy for killing O&S Posted: 18 Jan 2021 01:40 PM PST I'm pretty happy to have beaten O&S solo. For context, this is my first playthrough (though not my first Souls game - I've beaten Bloodborne before) and my character is a strength build deprived wielding a Great Bonk +10. I usually keep him at under 50% weight. I struggled a lot in the beginning and decided to experiment with different equipment configurations. O&S would always stagger me and corner me in my usual setup, so first I tried a very light setup to improve mobility. It helped, I could move around the arena very quickly and roll to my heart's content, but I'd take too much damage when they hit me and couldn't get to phase 2 consistently. Then I tried a fat-rolling heavy setup with Havel's set and it helped A LOT. I could tank most attacks and just keep hitting Ornstein until he died. The problem was the second phase. I was too slow to dodge and run from Super Smough. So I had an idea: I'd kill Ornstein with Havel's set, then immediately strip to caveman set to fight Smough. It worked! Immediately after killing Ornstein, I put as much distance as I could between me and SS, quickly removed all armor, and had a relatively easy time avoiding the big guy and striking back. I killed SS naked with the big bonk. Anyway, just felt like sharing this small victory and the strategy that I think is a bit unusual. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Jan 2021 04:41 PM PST I love that there are still people that play and talk about this game. Makes me happy I didn't start the trilogy so late. [link] [comments] |
Got emoted on after being killed while afk. Posted: 18 Jan 2021 05:58 PM PST I was just afk near a bonfire, didn't notice I was invaded, got backstabbed. With a sliver of health left I managed to pick up the controller and avoid a meteor shower looking spell, died to one quick jab and then got emoted on with the, "well what is it" emote I think it's called. That was my first pvp experience in this game lol and it didn't feel too great. Why act tough unless it's a fair fight with someone experienced. Unless it's a meme emote I missed. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:39 AM PST Ive noticed that I do well on the bosses when Im just chilling listening to music. I tried a million times trying to beat O&S. Then I got frustrated and was like "Imma listen to music and just try to analyze their fight patterns, no need to win." And then I won on the first try. -_- I couldnt believe it. It applied to several other bosses too. Has this happened to any of you? [link] [comments] |
I ran the niche Faith/Intelligence Build twice in this game. Here's what I learned: Posted: 18 Jan 2021 08:13 PM PST 1) This can be done two ways: 30 Faith/50 Intelligence using Velka's Talisman for miracles or 50 Faith/30 Intelligence using the Tin Darkmoon Catalyst for sorceries. Why not go 50/50 in both? It's simply not economical. If you're going to be able to cast almost any spell in the game, you need to have heavy investment in Attunement, otherwise you're handicapping yourself. Especially since higher level pyromancies and miracles can take up 2 slots. 2) 30 Faith/50 Intelligence is the better build. Why? The offensive miracles just don't justify the investment and the loss of the ability to use CSS and HCSM. Offensive sorceries are cheaper, faster, and much stronger. CSS, SS, HCSM, Pursuers, and Dark Bead are actually useful in both PvP and PvE. You can cast Wrath of the Gods at 30 Faith, but you will never be able to hit an invader with a single Sunlight Spear no matter how fast your casting speed. The best use of miracles at the highest levels is for support and healing. 3) Best upgrade path: Enchanted. Because enchanted makes a weapon scale almost entirely with Intelligence, if you simply give yourself the minimum stats to use a weapon and put the rest of your levels in intelligence, that weapon will do mostly magic damage, mitigating the severe split damage penalty. I ran a +5 Enchanted Claymore for most of the game and it performed really well. With minimum physical stats, it reached almost 600AR (I can't remember exactly) and I didn't really feel the split damage penalty. 4) Worst Upgrade Path: Divine. For some reason it felt like this upgrade path got hit the hardest by the split damage penalty, even at 50 faith. Its use is so niche (you only benefit from its use in a single area of the game, and can get along fine without it) that it can be entirely avoided and you'd never miss anything. It doesn't even do more damage against undead than the Regular upgrade path, like it's supposed to. It does put them down for good, but just kill the necromancers, it's not that hard. Some of you might ask why I didn't put Occult in here, since it's even more niche. The reason I didn't is because it actually does what it says it's going to do. It's very effective against Black Knights, Silver Knights, and Gods. It did more damage against the enemies it was supposed to do damage against, something the Divine path couldn't even bother doing. 5) Most Overrated Upgrade Path: Chaos. I understand the appeal of this path for Giant Dads/Twinks who want to put all their points into Vitality and Endurance, and it does what it's supposed to do -- give good damage for minimal investment -- but if you put any points into any of the damage stats, this upgrade path is immediately outshone. Enchanted, Magic, Regular, and Occult are all better at higher levels. All except Divine. Fuck Divine. 6) Casting Speed isn't that serious of an issue. I've always read without at least 40 Dex, you'll have a really hard time because of slow casting speeds. That's wrong. It's fine. Especially since the higher level spells you'll use in PvP -- Dark Bead, Black Flame, WotG, HCSM -- all have naturally high casting speeds, so you're not missing much. You're never going to hit a Lightning Spear or Great Heavy Soul Arrow in PvP, no matter how high your casting speed, so calm down. [link] [comments] |
Knight Artorias and Great Grey Wolf Sif Posted: 18 Jan 2021 04:22 PM PST Very recently got into drawing and this is my first Dark Souls piece! [link] [comments] |
I just killed 6 black knights and none of them gave me a weapon or a shield. Posted: 18 Jan 2021 07:43 PM PST I Killed the ones at Undead Burg, Undead Parish, Northern Asylum, The Catacombs, Tomb of Giants, and Darkroot Basin. I even had 3 humanity on at the time which shouldve boosted Item Discover right? Are there any more black knights in the game before the Kiln of the First Flame? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Jan 2021 11:23 PM PST Hello, I am on my first playthrough of Ds1 and am enjoying it greatly so far. I just beat the bell gargoyles but I am worried about something later on. I'm using a halberd plus 5 with my starting pyromancy in my other slot. Is this okay should I try to upgrade another weapon and not use the halberd. I initially used the halberd because of a horribly timed right-click that killed the merchant that sold the bow so I can not get the drake sword. So is the halberd fine to use one-handed or should I use a different weapon? Also, should I have a better pyromancy by now as I still have the starter one and it still takes a long while to wind up. I've upgraded strength to 16 and dexterity to 16. [link] [comments] |

I don't have anyone to talk about how much I enjoyed and suffered through this game Posted: 18 Jan 2021 03:53 AM PST I recently finished the DS trilogy for the first time an I have this urge to talk about it somehow. It sounds weird but this game touched my heart in a way that I will never forget. I first bought DS back when it came out around 2011 and stopped playing it after getting my ass whopped from the capra demon. This game left a Void in me for several years. A few weeks before christmas I started a whole new game and I was so curious, excited, frightened and entertained that I binge played it. I spent around 60 hours exploring the game and failing miserably. Especially the 4 Kings and Ornstein and Smough. The world, the music and the way the story is told touched my heart so much that I'm so sad that I finished this game series. I wanted to share my favourite moments: - reaching firelink shrine and listening to the soothing relaxing music and looking at that big ass raven
The feeling that I will never ever get the unique feeling again that I had when I first started this game makes me feel sad and empty. There is nothing to fill that void for me. I'm not even into fantasy at all. tl;dr: I love this game and I have a special place for it in my heart. Just wanted to share a few great moments i experienced [link] [comments] |
Do I really need a plus 10 before Quelaag ? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 03:27 AM PST I saw someone on YouTube , and they said you should get a +10 before Quelaag , this seems very high , but I am in blight town so should I farm for one ? [link] [comments] |
Is Humanity Misnamed Because Propaganda?? Posted: 18 Jan 2021 02:08 PM PST It appears to me that there are separate races in the dark souls universe based on which Lord Soul the founding person grabbed. Izalith to the demons/ Gwyn to the gods/ Nito to the skeletons/ and The Furtive Pygmy to humans. Multiple times in DS1 there is dialog about Gwyn and his peeps "shepherding the humans" which makes me believe that they know humans are a different race. In fact it also seems to me that those of the God race (lineage of Gwyn) cannot get the undead curse because they aren't human. But in-fact, if you play farther you start to learn that the undead curse isn't a curse at all and its actually just the darkness coming after fire. It's the natural course of things and the way the human race is supposed to be. We got the Dark Soul so we look nasty and crap but we're strong. So, seeing as how the item "HUMANITY" actually takes away the undead curse and brings the character to a more 'Godlike' state rather than your natural 'Human' state, it appears that the item 'HUMANITY' is misnamed as propaganda to keep humans from wanting to take on their legitimate nature. (Which obviously falls in line with the entire idea of calling it 'the undead curse' and sending the undead on 'missions' to Lordran. [link] [comments] |
What is the very last/most recent “hidden” area you discovered in this game? Posted: 18 Jan 2021 10:24 AM PST I don't necessarily mean an entire area, could just be a section of one. For me that section was the hidden area past the big tree in Darkroot Garden. When I first realized that tree was moving, it freaked me the fuck out! Then I was even more intrigued killing it and finding a whole other area with that lizard enemy I'd never seen before. Well I had seen it in some gameplay ages ago, but I barely remembered so I thought it was from DS2! Which I hadn't played yet. What a surprise... [link] [comments] |
Just finished the game and wow Posted: 18 Jan 2021 10:57 PM PST Just finished the game and wow it is truly a masterpiece this was my first souls game and it has sucessfully hooked Me into the genre and I now have an extreme amount of exictement to play ds3 Blood borne Demons souls and Elden ring from the story to the combat it isThe game has so many inner workings and is unlike anything I've ever played and blew me away on so many occasions from fire link all the way to the kiln and wanted to make this post as some appreciation and recollection of events as I went through them The first time I played through I got stuck in blightown after taking the shortcut from valley of the drakes and had to restart the game But on that second play through the game just took off and soared Coming back the second time I had some slight trouble in the parish but after getting both solaire and lautrec I let them do the work and ring the bell of awakening Going into the depths the bassilisks scared the living crap out of me and through its maze like structure really mar me appreciate the level design People often talk about their experience that finally hooked them in and mine was fairly later than most with it being the gaping dragon just from the scale and the world started to feel large and shoutouts to Walter for his help online Going into blightown was like a fever dream with the disease and crag spiders at every turn but the climb to the swamp is rewarded with a massive spider hole and another boss that tested my commitment and with the help of Suyvhan online we took care of quaelagg and he problems One of the first things that caught my eye was sens fortress and getting to come back and conquer it was a very satisfying experience to go in and beat up the snake men and conquer the traps and the iron golems at the top was like th icing on the cake for one of my favorite areas and could have been done without the help of Iron tarkus and Ricart ashcrow Ash lake in all of its beauty was stunning and will stay with me as one of the most beautiful areas in any game over ever played and the heavy emphasis in the dragon gives the area an incredible theme and unity with the hydra abundance of dragon scales and last everlasting dragon Up to O&S I was very under leveled and had been using co-op as a means to cheese the boss and O&S made me feel really hollow and unaccomplished after using online to fight them so from then on I vowed to fight every boss solo and took that through the entire game until gwyn not even using solaire despite going out of my way to save him but shoutout to solaire and ferna216 for the help with super smough The original lautrec fight frustrated me extremely the first Tim bye coming back later with chaos pyromancy and wrecking them was one of the most satisfying moments in the game for me The bed of chaos and lost izalith are areas that are problematic but I enjoyed the uniqueness of the bed ox chaos I understand the frustration with it and it's area with the dragon buts and my trip there and back was made significantly easier with the use of the chaos servant covenant The dukes archives was a place of great intrigue and mystery since you can see it from so many locations looming in the sky and i will always remember the Pisacas for instilling horror in me for what Seath had done to innocent people and made me extremely motivated to kill him and the crystal cave is a very interesting area to have this massive crystal zone at the top of the world Going into the catacombs I was probbably the most over level for any area destroying skeletons and necromancers in one hit and ultimately taking down pinwheel in 3 swings which is a shame because IMO pinwheel has one of the best themes and most interesting stories with it being a family trying to split itself apart agin hence mask of the father mother and child Tomb of the giants is not as bad as it was hyped up to be especially with the sunlight maggot that trivializes most of the encounters but the bone beasts remain my least favorite enemy in the game but the demon ruins and ash lake skyboxes more than make up for that and nito is one of my favorite characters design wise ever Going into darkroot is one of the strangest locations when you first go there with the abundance of wildlife and nature but after AotA you find out this is because of the abyss and also why it is so dark the crest of Artorias opens up to the one of most emotional moments with Sif and with the extreme reliance on animations of a dog to sell but it works they sell the gutluch hard and make it work and you as the player feel terrible for killing sif not just because it's a dog but also because of who it is but you needed that crest of Artorias I guess New Londo is fairly boring until the water is drained and you see all the corrupted darkwraiths humanity blobs and piles upon piles of corpses and the games grim tone about death is really at its peak with the four king being both the most stressful and enjoyable fights in the game After new londo I went to oolacie and have to say the way it fits with the base game is almost seem less if they had found a way for it or take place without the time skip it could have been perfect for my tastes but I understand why it was done Artorias was my favorite fight in the game hands down due to his insane move speed and feeling like a player with his rolls and whatnot and his fight really feels like a dance in a way this isn't ever captured elsewhere in the game and you really get a feel for the corruption of him and how much it hurts Gough and Cirian Kalameet was the most epic boss in the game from realizing its in darkroot to fighting a real dragon and even the incredible scene with Gough shooting him down its just amazing 3 kisses from me for superbness Manus was the hardest fight by a long shot with no one else even approaching his level due to his insane combos speed and huge hp pool but he was my most satisfying victory and I liked how the game leaves it up to your interpretation to whether or not manus is the furitive Pygmy mentioned earlier and killing him solo was incredibly satisfying but I am grateful he is the only boss that is so unrelenting Lastly the kiln the kiln is fantastic as a location and the small white hallway with the black knight ghosts really exemplifies the importance in a stunning way and inside the kiln the farmable black knights is nice for NG+ sing their weapons are so good and the gwyn fight is perfect from the music to the location and the bonfire won't he center and gwyn basically being hollow at that point where you find him I understand that this is very rambling and unfocused and largely about the world but that's what left the greatest impact on me and this is a game I will cherish and set on the shelf with the true masterpieces [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Jan 2021 07:19 PM PST Hello everyone! I have played Dark Souls since 2011 when it was released. It has remained my favourite game of all time since then, and I don't believe it's gling to change any time soon. The singleplayer in Dark Souls is top tier, but today I'm not here to write about that. I'm here to write about the other side of Dark Souls, the PvP and especially the old traditions it has. There is no denying that Dark Souls PvP is a cult of it's own. You either know every way to abuse the game, or you get wrecked. Reverse rolls, backstab chains, how to avoid cheeky starts (invisible crystal missiles) and many more. But another part of that cult are the things that happen when two people challenge each other. I am here to list some of them.
These are all of course just traditions. They are not rules of the game, it is more like a fun way to interact against an opponent. It also makes the match more enjoyable for both in my opinion. It does not feel nearly as annoying to lose against players like these. I made this post to both, tell new players about these silly "honor codes" that have existed within the community for years now, and to resonate with the people who have internalised these traditions just like I have. I just find it wonderful that in a game so brutal (and some times a bit unfair) things like these exist. [link] [comments] |

How to meet Kaathe and do the addon Posted: 19 Jan 2021 01:58 AM PST Hey, (warning: massive spoilers ahead) I'm currently on my second playthrough of the game (remastered on PC) and found out that there is a lot of content I missed, namely a whole addon! Additionally I want to meet and side with Kaathe. From what I gathered I need to do the four kings before placing the lordvessel. I am currently about to enter blighttown to travel down and ring the second bell.
Any help appeciated - in what order do I need to proceed? [link] [comments] |
