Who would be interested in an academic research paper about the music of the Dark Souls series? Posted: 04 Jan 2021 04:06 PM PST Hey all, These past few months, I have been researching and writing a thesis on the music of Dark Souls. My research has been specifically on the musical motifs of Firelink Shrine, Gwyn, the Lords of Cinder, and of Slave Knight Gael. Much of my work I've noticed hasn't been talked a lot about on the internet, so I figured I might share with the community to bring about (hopefully) new discussion. My premise of the paper was to draw attention to specific musical techniques in Dark Souls and to identify their origins in film music, and to draw attention to the usage of shared musical themes/motifs throughout the series. I stop short of attempting to draw any narrative conclusions implied by the music that isn't already made apparent through the games themselves. Essentially, none of my own opinions in order to be as objective as possible. But what's actually in the paper? Some brief history regarding the games' stories and film music. I include musical transcriptions, all transcribed by me, along with links to the specific audio. I will preface the paper by saying that a cursory understanding of how to read music will be required to have a full appreciation, but it is mostly prose. I didn't just want to drop the paper without finding out if people were even interested, but if y'all are for it, I can do it soon. If you have any questions about the content or the music, don't hesitate to ask them below! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 Jan 2021 10:09 PM PST I finished the game on Boxing day. It was not a 100% blind playthrough more like 80%. Also this is my first ever post on Reddit so I hope it doesn't get deleted. After this, there are spoilers about things that happend so if you are a new player and don't want to spoil your quest stop now. I started the game 7 years ago and pick it up 3 or 4 times and always stopped at the gargolytes as I could not ever passed them due to stress, rage quit or frustation. I always wanted to finish it. After all this years and just watching some streamers, mainly new players or speedruners I finally took courage and started it again and when through it. I did not finish the remastered as I already have the original and I do regret it as I felt empty when I defeted lord Gwyn. It is an emotional journey this game and I explored pretty much everything I could find. My proudest moment after finally killing Gargolytes was killing Seath in the first try. After I almost used my 10 estus with the stupid clams I entered the arena with only 3 and they were enough to withstand my ground. I did spoil the skull lantern so I knew I have to get it first before to go to the catacombs but I enjoyed exploring them and I found a 2nd bonefire which I didn't know was there. Those dog skeletons were annoying. The funniest parts were two moments. First one was after defeating ceassless discharge when you keep going down and find like 10 demons in one area. I tried to lure them one by one but they ended chasing me all together. Funny thing was one of them hit me so hard it knocked me out into an abyss and all of them follow me. When I revived at the bone fire and when down again they didn't respawn. This happened again with the gold ice giants/golems in the path to Seath. When I went back to the serpent to talk about the lord vessel I felt in the hole then proceed to install it, warp to firelink and this serpent guys was piss off with me I wanted to ask here about it but decided to keep going and don't spoil me anything else. I think I killed almost all bosses except the one in the painting world and the other one you muat fight if you kill the princess after O&S. BTW this one was the hardest fight and after seen soo many times streamers struggling and rage quitting I was scared but after 10 times, 2 of them with sunbro, I found out that I somewhere found a crystal haldberg and this became O&S and Gwyn bane. Capra demon I found him when I was already overpowered so it was easy same with the dragon in the depths which I had had help from sunbro too and let him do the job. I didn't save him at the end as I didn't do the fair lady covenant. Neither I found onion warrior after Sen's fortress. Gwym took me 10+ tries as I stopped counting after many rage moments then before I lite the bone fire I wanted to go back and kill the knights and found out that was it. I have become the Dark Lord. I will get the remastered version when is on sale again. I already bought DS3 and I will play DS2 also when I see it on sale as I'm that kind of person who want to follow the order even I know many people don't recommend it. It was an amazing journey and I have read a lot of post here from veterans and new players and I just want to say keep it up. You are a great. [link] [comments] |
Officially completed Dark Souls...... Posted: 05 Jan 2021 02:53 AM PST I have gotten both endings, beaten all the bosses and much more, but no 100% just yet... Should I go for 100% or should I continue to Dark Souls 2? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jan 2021 11:05 PM PST Something fairly traditional. Where we all follow a specific archetype and have a specific role to follow in the party. Sorta like... One person is the warrior of the group. One of the archer. One is the healer. One is the mage. We've played all the games many times, and are coming right off of finishing Bloodborne to do the whole DaS trilogy. So we are looking for unique ways to make it more difficult, and this is what we came up with. How should we add onto this, to encourage the role play a bit more? Maybe no Estus use during coop, only humanity, and the healer can heal via miracles? Only allowing certain upgrade limits before certain milestones are met? Etc etc. Anything that could add a bit of challenge, while encouraging a role play aspect. [link] [comments] |

I'm a new player, any advice before I start? Posted: 04 Jan 2021 04:12 PM PST Dear lost souls of r/darksouls. I am relatively new to the Souls franchise. I've only played an hour or so of ds3. Due to the new year, I wanted a challenge and a new hobby. I currently bought all 3 dark souls and am curious, should I know anything before diving into this magnificent series? [link] [comments] |

Playing this game is giving me nightmares Posted: 05 Jan 2021 01:16 AM PST Just done blight town and and now farming the leeches. I've been having weird ass dreams about running away from monsters the past few days... [link] [comments] |
Guys i went the wrong way to blighttown but it works better Posted: 04 Jan 2021 11:56 AM PST I know everyone knows all about this, but I went through the valley of drakes. It's my first playthrough and I'm running a caster/strength hybrid with a titanite catch pole, crimson set and lightning spear. I can't seem to find the right way to go because blighttown is a fucking labyrinth of a toxic death trap, but I'm having fun. I killed the capra demon with a +5 mace after 4 tries, and went to the depths and got cursed. Fuck those froggy bastards. Oswald was nice and sold some rock to me. So unfortunately I'm dumb as the dung pies I pick up and can't use remedy because the required int stat is 16 which is double mine. Sorry for the rant but I hate the depths more than anything in the game (in a good way) to the point where I picked up astoras sword and got spanked by grandpa drake. That was a mistake. Finally got Dark Souls Remastered, now I’d like some build advice Posted: 05 Jan 2021 12:07 AM PST In games like Dark Souls (that have various styles of combat) I have always been terrible with ranged fighting. Never could quite master it in anything I've played except Assassins Creed. I've played a bit with different starting classes to try out each method, and I can safely say that this game will be the same for me. So what I'd like to ask is this. What are some good build options for an up close and personal type player? What class, starting gift, early weapons and what not should I go for to give myself a good start in this game? Please i need help with direction. Posted: 05 Jan 2021 03:27 AM PST I am completely new player in the dark souls series and i am just loving this game!!!. So i am in the depths and i killed the gaping dragon. From there, how do i get to the second bell? I would be pleased if someone could answer me!! Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Stuck at orange fog in "Tomb of Giants" Posted: 05 Jan 2021 03:03 AM PST Hello everyoone, I am currently doing my first playtrough of the souls series and started with DS1. Now I am 7 hours into the run where I am currently stuck at an orange fog in the so called "Tomb of Giants". It said something about a "Gwyn" and that I couldnt pass yet so now I dont know what you are supposed to do next. I looked around everywhere for nearly an hour now and I didnt find anything else then dead ends. I wanted to experience the game completly "Blind", but this one is really starting to frustrate me so now I ask one of you guys to give me some kind of hint on what I am supposed to do next, ty :D [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jan 2021 10:35 PM PST I havent played on the ps3 in a while and im getting tired of the switch. I just want a real controller in my hands i guess. Is the ps3 version still played? [link] [comments] |
Cursed by invader in Undead Burg?! Posted: 04 Jan 2021 07:54 PM PST So here I am just starting a new game, co-op play with my GF - dream come true right? Well she summons me into Undead Burg, clear out up the the residence, then get invaded. Cunnysaurus or something Ike that. Keep in mind I'm SL14 and she's SL4 The red phantom invader one hits me with a pyromancy, both of us die and wake up cursed! Happened pretty quickly I'm not even sure I was in range. Since we're so early it pretty much broke both our games - I was able to unlock the elevators and get to snuggly to trade cracked red eye orbs. But she's screwed. Is there any way that could have happened naturally? Or was that my first encounter with a hacker? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jan 2021 05:01 PM PST I love the atmosphere of these games as well as the series' crazy combat. However, I would like something more linear (along the lines of "Demon's Souls") that might also be a little more fast-paced and without the critical thinking with each attack. I would buy the new "Demon's Souls" remake, but I don't have a PS5, and will likely not get one for a good bit. Love this style of gameplay, and I'd love to see more along these lines, thanks. Also my dumbass broke my FaP ring now i have to get the xan crown. P.S Sry if I dont respond right away cuz its late for me and ima go to sleep sleep soon. Bye happy new year and praise the sun! Posted: 04 Jan 2021 08:02 AM PST So, last night I got to kill Lord Gwyn and the game, after the credits, automatically started me on a new game plus. The problem is, I never went through the DLC because I thought that it was something I could go back to after I finish the main storyline (I played DS3 first and it worked that way with both DLCs) but after a quick Google search, I ended up losing the Broken Pendant from my inventory and I don't even have the Lordvessel anymore. Is there any way I can get to the DLC without having to play like 60% of the game all over again? Thanks to anyone in advance. Praise the sun! \[T]/ [link] [comments] |
What’s the most fearsome boss? Posted: 04 Jan 2021 09:29 AM PST |
Posted: 04 Jan 2021 05:42 AM PST I spoke to Solaire the first time you meet him on the bridge and haven't been able to find him since. He's not at the altar and never showed up in Anor Londo. I beat the Four Kings and I'm trying to find him to do his quest but he's nowhere to be found. Did I already fail his quest somehow? Edit: Well, I found him still on the Hellkite Bridge. He won't leave his spot. What gives? SOLVED! Praise the sun! He was stuck both on the bridge and also appeared finally in Anor Londo, then Sunlight Altar and then the summon sign appeared. For some reason he got stuck and I had to talk to both of him. [link] [comments] |
