Who would be interested in an academic research paper on the music of the Dark Souls series? Posted: 04 Jan 2021 04:07 PM PST Hey all, These past few months, I have been researching and writing a thesis on the music of Dark Souls. My research has been specifically on the musical motifs of Firelink Shrine, Gwyn, the Lords of Cinder, and of Slave Knight Gael. Much of my work I've noticed hasn't been talked a lot about on the internet, so I figured I might share with the community to bring about (hopefully) new discussion. My premise of the paper was to draw attention to specific musical techniques in Dark Souls and to identify their origins in film music, and to draw attention to the usage of shared musical themes/motifs throughout the series. I stop short of attempting to draw any narrative conclusions implied by the music that isn't already made apparent through the games themselves. Essentially, none of my own opinions in order to be as objective as possible. But what's actually in the paper? Some brief history regarding the games' stories and film music. I include musical transcriptions, all transcribed by me, along with links to the specific audio. I will preface the paper by saying that a cursory understanding of how to read music will be required to have a full appreciation, but it is mostly prose. I didn't just want to drop the paper without finding out if people were even interested, but if y'all are for it, I can do it soon. If you have any questions about the content or the music, don't hesitate to ask them below! Edit: Okay, sounds like there's interest! I trimmed some parts for the sake of turning in a more concise paper, but I'm going to add those parts back in before posting it. [link] [comments] |
UPDATE: The Beautiful Atmosphere and Story Telling of Dark Souls 2: Part 2. Posted: 05 Jan 2021 01:14 PM PST In this post, I will go over the areas of the game, the dialogue from characters, and the soundtrack. When you first start you are in a dark and gloomy place. Not all that interesting or visually pleasing. Then, as you pass through the narrow pathway of tree and cave, you come upon a light (and many praise the sun messages) as you walk into Majula, the safe haven for the rest of your playthrough. The chiming of the music comes in as you descend the hill. The orange rays of the sun reflect on the water that surrounds this place, high up from the shore giving a vibrant and warm feeling to the player. The views in the distance give a sense of wonder, and awe, as you realize you are a very small thing in a very big place. Than you see her, a woman standing near a tree (I also like how she is only there for the first encounter, she never returns to that spot) peering into the distance, as if she can see something beyond that you cannot. My favorite dialogue has to be from her. Shanalotte is the anchor that keeps you coming back to this game. Shanalotte is our guiding light. While your filled with a sense of wonder, she tells you to seek the king. Asks you if are the next monarch. Than tells you that the king is over the hill, through the woods. Being told to seek the king within the first 20 mins of the game is just so cool to me. It gives you a sense of purpose when you are lost. While "over the hill and through the woods" is really reallllly simplified, and unhelpful, it remains one of my favorite pieces of dialogue. She tells you that the Estsus Flask, the only thing that enables us to go on this journey is our hope. She says when you give her a shard " Is that a shard you've found? Here, let me see it. So that I may help you. To see light, to see hope… However faint it might be…" No matter how stuck or lost you may be, she will always be there to give you assurance in the dark. The game knows how punishing it is, so to balance it out with an NPC that gives advice and comfort, is genius design. All of this while the sounds of wind, and the chiming of the music come in just complete what Dark Souls 2 was - a journey. A hard and unforgiving journey. With a small sense of hope that is the driving force behind your actions. Heide's Tower of Flame is a ruined kingdom, lost to a rising water long ago, with knights so ancient no one remembers their name. While it may be one of the smallest areas in the game, it is one of the first, and vibrantly stunning ones. The towers of buildings tips poking above the water line, leaving you to wonder what once was, how big this place must have been, in a time long forgotten. The Dragon Aerie, filled with flying wyverns all throughout the sky, high up on mountain peeks with bridges connecting them all. Such a beautiful place, the wind howls as you first enter and all you see from the horizon are dragons flying from as far as the eye can see. The dusk sky shines throughout, revealing the entire area as you see it, letting you see it all in its shiny, dragon filled, terrifying glory. One of the most rememberable areas and shocking ones had to be - The Shrine of Amana. After you defeat the looking glass knight, the kings stand in, you descend deep beneath the castle. You enter and hear a beautiful voice, as her singing echoes throughout the deep cavern. Filled with glowing vines and plants (and mages that have infinite range) you get closer and closer to the voice as it gets more loud and clear. You wonder who it could be, what they must be doing down here. Only to find out its some super ugly horrifying skull face frog thing, and its a boss. Wow, what a troll. The areas: are unparalleled. The dialogue: unique and fantastic. And the sounds and music, wrap it all together nicely. I realize I could of gone over more characters, and areas, and other points of music, but I figured I would start of by talking about the ones that stuck out the most, and stayed with me. My favorite piece from this game, has to be the end credits song - Longing. After beating the game, you hear this beautiful calming song as the voice has no real words to say. She Just sings. After a heated battle I would sit back and listen to it every time. If I got the craving to listen to it again, I know this sounds silly, but I would literally go through the entire game again just to hear it. Listening to it on its own is great, but the sense of accomplishment and pride it gives you when you hear it after beating the game are... well... I don't have words. It is just so beautiful, I had to chase that high over and over again. I knew all the pain and suffering would be worth it, because I would get to hear that voice at the end of it all again, and that's is why Dark Souls 2, while it may be flawed gameplay wise, has the best story telling, and atmospheric design than well, any other game I have ever played. Call it the black sheep, the ones that are different are always the ones that are remembered the most. I plan to do another one of these, so stay tuned for that, and thanks so much for reading through. Sincerely - A Dark Souls 2 Enthusiast. [link] [comments] |
Which boss weapon should I get? Posted: 05 Jan 2021 10:02 AM PST I just remembered ornifex gives you one for free, so my sm-locked character can get one! But only one... I'm currently debating between the dragon swords, for the ability to send people flying, the butcher knife, or the spitfire spear (just because I can use it with my stats lol) Advice and opinions welcome! UPDATE: Thanks for all your input! A couple of things to factor in (which have me leaning maybe toward dragon weapons?):
NOTE: I have yet to beat the throne of want or DLC bosses, and I don't think I'll do so before picking my one boss weapon, so those options are more or less out.
So, as a follow-up, which would you say is more useful? (Pvp and/or pve) The butcher knife's hp gain (although I make frequent use of warmth) Or The dragon swords' knockback? (I do have a zweihander that I kind of use for this...) Thank you again for your input :) [link] [comments] |
Help me getting into the Game please! Posted: 05 Jan 2021 11:47 AM PST I played DSR a few times and DS3 one time. I finally got to play DS2 but I have a few issues. Most of them I think I can handle myself, but I'm playing on a Keyboard and it keeps showing the Controller Keys ingame. If it we're the same Keys as in the other games and just the visuals were different it would be pretty easy but things like "interact" are not on E, but on Shift + Left Mousebutton (which is usually the heavy Attack in the other games) are there any Tricks that let me get the keybinds from the other Games and/or Show the Keyboard Keys ingame? I Hope my questions are understandable, because I'm Not that good at english. [link] [comments] |
Speedrunning: I just started yesterday Posted: 05 Jan 2021 02:32 PM PST I always loved DS2, even more than other souls games - So I decided to start streaming my speedrun attempts. Yesterday I was building muscle memory and learning the route. You should come by and check my progress, let me know where I am going wrong! [link] [comments] |
Playing DS2 on the PS5 feels stiff? Posted: 05 Jan 2021 05:54 AM PST Hi, has anyone tried to play DS2 on the PS5? The movement from the analog stick to the player feels stiff. It isn't as responsive and sensitive as when I played Demon's Souls remake or DS3. It honestly kills it for me. [link] [comments] |
any tips on how to get past frigid outskirts? Posted: 05 Jan 2021 12:11 PM PST i killed every boss on ds1 and am close to starting the ringed city dlc after previously killing every boss in ds3 so far aswell. i want gael to be the last boss of the souls series, which means ill have to go back and kill lud and zallen before doing so. problem is: frigid outskirts was so fucking hard and unfair that i quit last time i went there. since its the last boss of that game i can relocate any stats for almost any weapon in the game. is there any way to make the trip to the boss easier? Posted: 04 Jan 2021 10:59 PM PST Ok so I'm very new to Dark Souls and my first jab at the series was DS2 and I'm not gonna lie I got my ass handed to me out the gate and after 40 mins of trying I was just overwhelmed by the difficulty curve. Before DS2 I had never played a game that shits on new players this hard. I'm playing through DS3 and I find it so much more bearable but I've got an itch to go back to DS2 I'm not gonna take that beating laying down. Any helpful tips? [link] [comments] |

Stupid questions from a new fan. Posted: 05 Jan 2021 11:10 AM PST Hey guys, new fan here (read title), and I was curious on a few things. Who are the strongest characters in the series? Which weapons are the best weapons? What are the hardest maps/areas to play in? Who is the hardest boss? What are some interesting secrets that the players have never solved? Sorry for the long post. Are pure physical builds worth it? Posted: 04 Jan 2021 11:52 PM PST Looking for a sage to impart his wisdom upon me. Picked the game back up recently with a friend and was gonna try a dex/quality build but remembered how dominant elemental builds were and wanted to know if it was even worth it or should i just pop out a stat investment for elemental damage reguardless? TL;DR is the damage gap between full-scaled physical and elemental builds as massive as it use to be? [link] [comments] |

Dark Souls 2 New Player Questions Posted: 04 Jan 2021 09:49 PM PST Hello, relatively new player here, and I've got a few questions. Platform is PC.
I ask these questions because when I googled them, most of the answers dated a few years back, and because from what I've seen the PvP in DS2 is alot more interesting than Dark Souls 1, and in my opinion Dark Souls 3. Cheers everyone! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:04 AM PST So after going back and getting a third branch for striad, I looked upon his boss weapons and I'm eyeballing the warped sword, and arced sword. Both scale with Dex, one A rank the other B, both require a 25 stat, the A to Dex the B to Str. Considering I'm using a longbow, and the Hiede sword (which isn't going away because not many things have lightning res + I like the moveset) which might be better to get? My brain automatically thinks to get the Warped cuz scales with Dex and requires Dex, but idk. Help plz [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 Jan 2021 09:31 PM PST Tyrel, the Royal Vanguard Once a wandering mercenary, Tyrel crossed paths with many notable warriors, including his own sister and Velstadt, who later became both his greatest ally and greatest rival. Words say after the giants' lord was defeated by an unknown warrior, the Royal Vanguard set out to hunt down the remaining giants in Drangleic — the few who managed to escape now have to hide in the deepest, darkest catacombs of the kingdom. Since King Vendrick has gone hollow, the Royal Vanguard watches over the king's castle from the highest peak of Drangleic Tela of the Forgotten Land A sorceress and formidable duelist hailing from an unknown land. The younger sister of Tyrel, the Royal Vanguard and former advisory of Queen Mytha, Tela was a loyal servant of the Iron King alongside Sir Alonne. When the Iron King's kingdom was engulfed by the flames of chaos and the king lost his mind, he turned on the sorceress who decided to spare his life in honor of Sir Alonne but left the Iron Keep. Words say since that Tela wanders in the Dragon Aerie, taming wyverns for King Vendrick's most trusted warriors, the Dragonriders I personally rate it LameFanfiction/10, but feel free to post your opinions [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jan 2021 06:01 PM PST Does she do nothing but spin and spin and spin when she's around 5% health? It seriously took me 15 minutes to get the last hit in because she wouldn't stop spinning in circles. I was laughing so hard...even though I HAAAATE spiders. Those stupid golden skulltulas freaked me out for hours, leading up to her. I'm playing blind, so I KNEW it had to be a damned spider at the end. But the little ones in the run up to her--plastered all over ceilings and walls....God almighty. #scaredfordays [link] [comments] |
What happened to the Bearer of the Curse? Posted: 04 Jan 2021 07:26 PM PST Hey everyone so basically after I defeated Nashandra and Aldia I decided to go for the ending where you sit on the throne of want but I'm very curious as to what actually happens to the Bearer of the Curse. Is it similar to Dark Souls 1 where he sacrificed himself to prolong the age of fire or does he get to live?Sorry if this has already been asked I'm just very curious. Ds2 animations are so awesome and I realized something very interesting today. Posted: 04 Jan 2021 04:50 PM PST Normally, the protagonist breathes slowly but if you deplete your stamina for a short while the breathing speeds up as if the protagonist exercised (which in this case yes they kinda did lol) [link] [comments] |
