Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread!

Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play!

For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls

Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games.

Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned:

    Dark Souls: Remastered

    Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

    Dark Souls III

    Our recommendations for safe modding

*This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account.

    Basic Steps:

    Make a separate Steam account

Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library.

Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory.

Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation.

Set Steam to "off line" mode.

Install the mods and perform any necessary setup.

Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods!

Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online!

To the invader who attacked me in Anor Londo, thank you.

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 09:02 PM PST

In your effort to invade my world and try to kill me, you proved to be a true gentleman. You watched me descend from the rafters barely making it past the silver knight archers. But instead of attacking you waited for me to reach the next bonfire. You followed me into the room, and instead of engaging, walked away. You knew that if we had fought in that room, I may have accidentally attacked our favorite sunbro. But instead, you backed away to a safe spot where we could engage in honorable combat.

Honorable it was. The fight was superb, and though I vanquished you, it was a pleasure spending this short time with you. Chosen undead, you are an honorable soul. Thank you and happy hunting.

The #1 strategy for farming maximum souls with minimal time and effort.

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 12:55 PM PST

    Hey all,

Relatively new to the game, and DS remastered is my first souls game. To say I'm hooked is an understatement, and I've already bought DS2 and DS3 and have Bloodborne ready to go.

So I have almost beat the game after about a week or two of obsessive, borderline unhealthy playing, and I have only the final boss to go so I am preparing for NG+. I didn't farm too much through the game, but now I want to load up on lots of mats, upgrade all my gear, the pyromancy glove etc. so I wanted maximum souls with minimal effort and don't care about the cheese factor lol. This is more of a late game strategy as well since you must have reached Anor Londo, and assuming you have some key gear (and the doll from your second visit to the Asylum so you can enter the Painted World in the Cathedral). After trying several recommended routes online, the absolute fastest/easiest way I've found is this:

Location: Phalanx in Painted World (I know this is well known as a top tier farming spot, but there's a few tweaks I found that maximize it. If this has already been said sorry for repeating.). Also it's crucial that you have gone through the level prior, so that you have unlocked the crucial shortcut right after the bonfire. You can run right by the phalanx to open the door to start since they can pack a punch and are quite a challenge at first (for me, anyway).

Gear: Equip symbol of avarice and covetous silver ring. This is pretty crucial as it nets you about 5500 more souls than without, which adds up in a purely farming scenario, so if you don't have them yet, make an effort to do so. They don't stack for object find but they do with souls, which I just realized lol. I use the Giant armor and Great Shield of Artorias but you don't need much, I mainly use it for the poise so I don't get interrupted while casting. Also the SoA will slightly degrade your health, but you will be back at the bonfire within a minute so its irrelevant.

Strategy: You'll need fire tempest and the pyromancy glove. Mine was +5 but more might be better, and it might actually work on the base. As long as you are one-shotting them, that's all that matters.

From the bonfire with the shortcut unlocked, run up and kill the 3 undead. This alone nets around 1600 souls and prevents them from coming up behind you. Then, run up to the phalanx, and start the Fire Tempest spell shortly after they notice you and start to move, and when you're about a rolls distance away. If you time it right, you should cast the spell just as you come in front of the first guy, aren't hit, and can kill them all in one shot. If not, wiggle a bit and cast again - they are quite slow but can pack a punch - or take out a nice sweeping sword and clean up the mess. Then run back to the bonfire. You can also kill the undead to the right by the cliffside for another quick 2000-3000 souls, but it adds another 30-45 seconds or so and I found this method maximized the time/soul ratio.

Results - If I get the Phalanx in one shot, I can be back at the bonfire in about 40-45 seconds (faster if I had lighter gear) and it nets approx. 13,600 souls (about 8400 without any souls increasing gear). In about a half hour I got nearly 400k souls. You can farm without the symbol and ring if you need to or just need a few runs for a particular thing, but you're missing out on quite a bit of souls.

Thats it! I am sure this strategy may have been mentioned before - perhaps exactly - but I just wanted to share just in case someone is scrolling by and needs some major souls fast. I was doing it before with just my +15 claymore, which was also easy, but took about 90 seconds. Also if I am missing out anything that would make it even better, let me know!

    Git gud isn't toxic.

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 02:07 AM PST

I never thought git gud was toxic, at least not in dark souls. It comes mostly from people asking how to beat bosses they're stuck on, and the secret is, there's no secret. If you see an overhead vertical swing, you'd better dodge sideways. If they have an aoe you'd better pay attention. Most bosses don't have a gimmick or an easy way to cheese. You see what he's doing and act accordingly. There's no advice that's going to let you smash the boss, you literally have to git gud.

    Knight’s Honor

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 08:09 PM PST

After 36 hours and many headaches, I finally got the knights honor achievement. Wow was it more work than it's worth but platinum is just around the corner, so hopefully I will achieve that in the near future.

    I’m fucking enraged I can’t believe it

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 10:31 PM PST

Alright let me set the stage for you, I'm in New Londo to go take a shit on all four of those kings crowns. The run to get there is fucking ridiculous, I hate those ghost things more than the drunk driver who paralyzed my brother. I was trying for like an hour and I just couldn't get to the fog door, fast forward to about 15 minutes ago. I make it to the door. Walk in, I know I have to fall into the abyss. I fucking jump, a running jump and I hit one of the tiles that poke out and fucking die. I'm done

Mom roasted the hell out of my character for moaning

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 04:13 PM PST

I was playing in the living room the other day; when I got hit, my character made this sound (see video). My mom asked what the hell that noise was, to which I replied that it's the character your sound makes when you get hit really hard. Her response? "I don't care how hard he got hit, nobody should be making that sound."

Just finished the DLC and it was the best Souls experience so far

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 01:39 AM PST

I have just finished the DLC and I have to say, that it was a blast! The opening fight to set the scene was already great but the fight vs. Artorias was my favorite fight so far (only missing Gwyndoline and Gywn now) and Manus was a real tough sob! Kalameet was also great but the main challenge for me was to cut off the tail (I was struggling with Kalameet in the beginning but once I said that I absolutely want to cut the tail off first, his whole moveset became so clear and easy, it was a game changer).

The lore is also first class and I am feeling a bit sad already that I only have 2 bosses left...

I completed Dark Souls for the second time

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 11:34 PM PST

I completed it before, I brute forced my way through the game with the harvel gear and Zewihander and I had to grind so much to use those. I got to the final boss and rage quit I came back then 3 days before the demon souls PS5 release and beat the game finally.

Got demon souls then and loved it so much I got the platinum. I used the Royalty magic/half melee build and loved the game I was Adamant then to try dark souls again with a similar build and give it another chance as I didn't like it too much the first time (because of the way I was playing it not the game itself). So I got dark souls remastered for ps5 (was previously playing on switch) and I just finished it.

Loved it, I used the same build as I did in demon souls. I had my enchanted falchion and catalyst in my right hand for soul arrows and it's variants and I had my shield and talisman in my left hand for block/heal and homeward. I beat the game all the optional bosses and all the dlc and I can say now I'm a huge fan I'm going to start bloodborne next and try the other dark souls games then after.

Hardest boss was probably the Dragon in the dlc and I beat the final boss with only taking one hit and on my first try by using parrys and he was probably the easiest boss! I never ever thought I'd say that! What a great game loved it and now I'm a huge fan of the souls series. thanks to everyone that helped me on here in the past.

YouTube videos to get into lore?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 12:33 PM PST

I have been playing dark souls recently and I feel the game would be a lot better if I understood the lore a bit more, so if you have any YouTube videos to help me understand the law a suggestion would be much appreciated. :)

Killed Asylum Demon the got gud way

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 01:42 PM PST

On my final run of the game for the Dark Soul achievement right now. Just started not long ago and decided to finally go toe to toe with the Asylum Demon using the broken sword hilt. Took a while and got hit a couple times, but Im proud to have finally done it after 4 years of playing the game.

I can finally say I got gud. (This statement may be retracted if I so desire to do a run with just the broken straight sword. Otherwise yay I did it!)

    My parrying skills have awakened

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 03:40 AM PST

I went into Gwyn's boss room expecting to dodge every single one of hos attacks. Turns out I suck at dodging and I parried every single one of his attacks

This may not sound like much, but its my first time beating the game. Definitely worth the 40 euros i spent.

Its a nice feeling, beating the game after I hit so many roadblocks.

Off to Dark Souls 2 I go.

    Finished Fatroll, Finally!

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 08:40 PM PST

I've only been in the DS community for about 8-9 months now, and I've been taking on challenge runs now that I've gotten the game down. My latest was always fat rolling, and it was easily the most frustrating run since my first.

Going into it, I remember thinking: "oh I'll be a walking tank, this'll be fun! Maybe I'll be a bit slow but I'll make up for it in damage!"

    Oh lord, I was wrong.

Dark Souls is about DODGING. You know, being agile? Turns out, when you go near max carry weight, you aren't anywhere close to agile. Bosses I had learned how to dodge got a lot harder. I lucked out and got a black knight greatsword, but that didn't make it that much easier. In particular, O&S, Gaping Dragon, Artorias, and Kalameet gave me trouble. On the opposite end, Manus, Capra, and Nito aren't that hard when you can tank their hits.

Overall experience 4/10, would maybe do again but probably not for a while. Mid/fast roll is the way to go.

As always. I'd love suggestions for future challenges to try!

Quelagg's lava attacks make the fight impossible

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 10:06 PM PST

Is there any way to stop her from doing these attacks? Within 10 seconds half the arena is basically unusable because it's filled with lava. I somehow manage to get surrounded every time and thus can't dodge her 360 sword swing attacks.

    Ornstein and Smough

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 04:16 AM PST

After beating every boss in dark souls 2 and 3 I finally decided to play the original for the first time I felt very confident and did most bosses in 2-3 attempts. Until I got to these two I had heard a lot about them and was very exited. I just died to them for the 50th time this is more attempts then it took me to beat Midir, Gael and Friede combined. So you guys got any tips I must be missing something.

Soliare's summon sign is not there for O&S boss fight

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 11:50 PM PST

Hi all, this is my first time through the game. O&S are wrecking me. Whenever I use humanity to attempt to summon, there are very rarely summoning signs. I've used about 10 humanities and only managed to summon 2 players (who both died).

More curious, Solaire's summon sign is never there. I've googled where it should be (stairs near the archer in the great hall), and I don't have anything there. For the record, I haven't killed Solaire.

    Anyone encountered this?

I just beat O&S for the first time (second try 😤) with a +9 Zweihander and I'm not sure which Lord soul to acquire first. Is there a particular boss or area that's easier/more difficult with this oversized toothpick? Lmk!

    And just like that...

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 09:06 PM PST

After 4 and a half years of playing dark souls, I finally have achieved the Dark Soul achievement. Can't really say I have the platinum since it was done on Xbox, but it feels like a platinum. I never thought I would actually follow through with my goal to 100% the game. There are so many achievements that can take hours to complete.

After every run, every journey to link the fire. I can finally rest. Its been a wild ride, and of course its not over. I'll always play the game from time to time. Just now seems like a good time to let it be for a while. Logged off my last character right next to Solaire, gazing off into the sun. If only I could be so grossly incandescent.

I regret fighting Orstein and Smough with Solaire.

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 04:01 PM PST

I was told online that I should fight the two with Solaire to make the fight fair. And now I regret it.

In the boss room, I immediately went to fight Smough since he's easy to dodge and let Solaire fight Orstein. I was expecting that I would kill Smough first and fight Super Orstein later, but Solaire killed Orstein before I could kill Smough.

After that, Super Orstein was rather easy to beat because of how slow he is (its too easy to dodge roll his attacks). I beat them on my first try.

As a newbie to the Souls series, I was super dissapointed by how that fight turned out. I never got to fight Orstein, and Solaire made the boss fight too simple. I wish there was a way to reset the fight.
