I don't know who you are and you may never see this but thank for today. You were a dark spirit and instead of killing me, you chose kindness and helped me out by showing me loot. I was going through a rough day and you made it better. Thank you

    I finally beat this game!

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 10:11 PM PST

And oh my God, is it one hell of an experience. I wish I could replay this game again, I really do. The end felt so abrupt, it felt like I just killed Gwyn, linked the fire, and went immediately into NG+, and the game feels so different to me now, but that abruptness makes me feel the need to keep playing this game, which now happens to be one of my favorite of all time. It feels so surreal to be at the end of this journey, but I am. I might start a new character with a different build and loadout, I'm not really sure I wanna do NG+. I also do want to get both endings. Regardless, I wish I could play Demon's Souls, DS2, DS3, BB, and Sekiro but I can't since I'm on switch. But in the end, I just came here to say that I'm so glad I finally beat this great game.

    Painted World

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 05:12 PM PST

I mentioned I was going into painted world and no one thought to mention fire breathing meatballs with legs or the pterodactyl? I was doing fine but then I got invaded by chubby Marge Simpson flinging massive fire spells at me. Fun area so far but the phalanx spear throwers were tedious to get through.

Finally Beat it on Switch after 39 hours

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 02:47 PM PST

Gotta say, as much as I love the combat and customisation of 3, the level design and areas and bosses really stand out in DS1 and it was an absolute blast from start to -minus invisible crystal cave bridges- finish love the series and can't wait to get my hands on DS2!

To those who beat the game, what soul level did you end on?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 10:01 PM PST

I ended at 92, only because I spent over an hour farming the Phalanx. I think it made the game a little too easy for me which I regret.

Playing Dark Souls 10 Years Late or: How a Scrub Got Good and Learned to Stop Worrying About the Dark

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 04:52 PM PST

So I tried playing Dark Souls in 2011/2012 with little to no outside help or guides. I gave up in Anor Londo. I finally gave it another shot in 2020 with the help of some guides and wikis, after having beaten (and absolutely loved) Bloodborne 5 years prior.

The one thing I really learned finishing the game is that a big part of "getting good" is not so much about playing better or faster, it's about knowing more. My first playthrough, I was advised not to look anything up and just explore on my own. I had a bad time and missed a lot of stuff. This time, I looked up anything I wanted to and read all about bosses and areas, because this game is all about finding and sharing secrets. Understanding that you'll need curse-resist for Seath, the Rusted Iron Ring for Blighttown, etc made the game infinitely more manageable.

While I still can't say I love Dark Souls, I do now admire it, and think I really actually understand it. It resonates so much more for me now than it did almost a decade ago. I have so many thoughts on finally finishing the game that I put them all together here if anyone is interested (it's a long read, too long for a reddit post): https://ratgrimes.medium.com/playing-dark-souls-10-years-late-or-how-a-scrub-got-good-and-learned-to-stop-worrying-about-the-50ee9b8ea61

Suffice it to say: I loved Sen's Fortress and Undead Burg, Blighttown was pretty all right in Remastered (especially compared to the original), Bed of Chaos was bad but not the worst, the second half of the game is decidedly quite poor compared to the first, the DLC is excellent, and I won't soon forget this playthrough.

My newbie rankings of bosses based on design, difficulty, and fun:

    Asylum Demon — B

    Bell Gargoyles — C

    Capra Demon — F

    Pinwheel — D

    Seath the Scaleless — C

    Stray Demon — C

    Taurus Demon — C

The Bed of Chaos — D

    Sanctuary Guardian — B

    Knight Artorias — S

    Black Dragon Kalameet — A

    Areas:

Dark Souls and Generosity of Design

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 05:09 PM PST

Dark Souls is so abundant with the type of content other games have to compromise on. As the cost of game development continues to balloon, enemy variety and boss fights often get compromised in modern games.

Programming a new enemy must be expensive, requiring lots of planning and creative design work, experimentation, testing and iteration. It seems that in modern big-budget action games it is now common to only have a small handful of boss fights and a smattering of different enemy types. Compare the most recent God of War game to it's predecessors in this regard. Similarly, I recently played Resident Evil 7 and it has like...2 enemy types. These are both excellent games, but you can see where concessions gets made.

So it always impresses me just how abundant Dark Souls is with unique enemies and bosses. Each area of the game has it's own ecosystem of creatures, and some areas like Blighttown for example, have quite a lot. They are all carefully placed and play-tested, sometimes appearing in interesting combinations that compliment each other.

In addition to that, Fromsoft developed a staggering 19 bosses for this game, many of which are enormous and intricate, with large movesets that sometimes transition during multi-phase encounters. I know not every boss is an award-winning design, but they're mostly great.

Sorry for this really late and obvious insight, but I'm fairly new to the series.

I just cut Seath's tail for the first time!

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 06:42 AM PST

After several attempts to cut Seath's tail while he was scooting around like a giant Roomba, I finally did it on my sorcerer run! It was very satisfying to kick his tail around after the fight.

How's it feeeel Seath? To be a bitch?

DOES ANYONE UNDERSTAND HOW SKIN COLOUR WORKS IN CHARACTER CREATION??

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 10:00 PM PST

Basically title. Yesterday I tried helping someone who was trying to get a neon pink character and things got REAL weird. It seems like you can get different results with the same settings depending on which order you adjust the sliders in?? And also you can change the results by readjusting the sliders over and over again even if you always put them back in the same position?? Does anyone understand why it does this or how it works? I'm on remastered on PC btw.

    Taking courage and starting DSR

Hi everyone. This is my first post and I'm telling you that I want to start, and so overcome my fear for horror, Dark Souls Remastered. I decided this because I want to be a part in this community and feel the astonishing power of praising the sun.

PS: I'm sorry for my english.

    I did it :)

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 07:00 PM PST

Wow I'm so happy. This game was awesome. I did a post a week ago struggle in Blighttown and now today I just finished it.

Manus was a pain o god. This was the hardest boss in the game. Gwyn was ok when I did see I can parry him I feel like I was cheating. This last level was all about parrying all the way up to the boss. Love the fact the game give you all the tool you need before you get to a boss.

This game I will remember it. This is my second soul game after Bloodborne but this was the best one. After playing only game like God of War and Last of Us I have some new emotions now. The chalenge was just perfect. Always fair.

Ps sorry for my english :)

    Thank you to "Robin"

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 04:45 PM PST

I've picked up the remastered for switch, and have not had a good time of it. After dying for the 100th time in the undead berg, I googled and learned about summoning. So I used 2 of my 4 humanity (1 to get human 1 to kindle cause I suck and more estus never hurts) and found the sign who got me all the way to Havel...before Havel 1 shot me.

But seriously thank you Robin, that was the most headway I've made in the game to date!

    Encounter with full-debuff & insta-kill cheater

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 01:26 PM PST

I am amazed that this still is an issue on the Remastered version of Dark Souls these days. Anyway, I am currently at the bonfire in the Depths (SL 34) and decided to reverse my hollowing there. I was then invaded by a phantom with the name [REDACTED] immediately after.

I only got far enough to hear the phantom spawn sound and I was immediately greeted with the shower of status-effects and debuffs one would know from infamous cheaters like Malcolm Reynolds, colorful explosions at my character, all my equipped gear breaking instantly and a cursed status on top of it, accompanied by a solid 3 minutes of "Humanity Restored" appearing on my screen.

imgur album with pictures for the curious, as I am apparently not allowed to make image posts here.

    EDIT: Corrected spelling for Reynolds
EDIT 2: This is the Steam profile of the player, I suggest that you block them in hopes of never encountering them in-game
EDIT 3: Removed link to Steam profile and ign-mention again because I just found out that's against the sub rules. If you still want the info, dm me.

So I just fought and killed Havel at a low level, and the weirdest thing happened.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 08:49 PM PST

I was only doing like 34 damage a hit, and all of a sudden it did around 350! Normal R1 hit, no parry, nothing.

I refuse to kill him, I know that I've got to go the that bell tower to get him back to friendly. But how do I escape the guy, do I have to keep running to smough and ornstein over and over until I beat them or is there a quick way to get back to the bell tower without going through sens fortress

Thoughts on a Bluepoint DS1 Remake?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 02:52 AM PST

They took a few artistic liberties with the Demon's Souls remake which a lot of people have disagreed with. A lot of people don't really like the new character designs and environments.

Seeing that reaction, in your opinion do you think Bluepoint will do a good job with DS1?

What do you think each Souls game did the best/worst?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 01:33 PM PST

I will start. Dark Souls had the best world design and lore, Dark Souls 2 had a great story and some of the coolest weapons and armor, which really helped build variety, and Dark Souls 3 had the best level design and bosses.

Edit: I also think Ds3 was redeemed somewhat by its dlc
