Posted: 28 Nov 2020 07:20 PM PST I've recently competed dark souls and picked up a cheeky Black Friday deal on dark souls 2. After giving it a run I was already on google looking at best weapons for noobs and starting to watch a guide mainly cause I was really struggling with the first area etc. But, it does feel wrong and I said "maybe I should just play the game." Should I just keep on going without worrying about stats/best gear whatever?? [link] [comments] |
I've finally managed to beat my first dark souls game on NG+ top 3 on my list of games Posted: 28 Nov 2020 10:08 PM PST It's been a great experience, but anything that gives us joy in life has to give us trouble sometimes on that note "Shrine of Amana" is the literal hell and going through it should be the final boss IMO Also, I've beaten the game a second time with: Falchion +10 - for clearing enemies that are low on hp, great clearing tool Warped sword +5 - My main weapon, it's just exceptionally good for a dex build. 4 giant souls - couldn't be asked to fight the dragon at 6 am so I just charged to the final boss Here are some screenshots of my stats etc. It took me a total of 45h:16m:40s To beat it on NG+ For a final word I would like to say to everyone who's thinking of playing this game but unsure if it's too hard for them or smth, The game is hard, but once you learn fighting mechanics, etc it's a pure pleasure, every location is a piece of art and it's given me lot's of joy, for the people who stopped playing or are struggling with certain areas or bosses, Keep trying, Level up your character and read up on weaknesses of certain bosses if you run out of all other options. Feel free to ask anything you would like to know. Have a great day Yours truly Rejmont aka.Nofac3guy [link] [comments] |
The Pursuer [LEGO BIONICLE build] Posted: 29 Nov 2020 11:25 AM PST https://www.flickr.com/photos/hardingco/50630529672 Hey r/DarkSouls2! I recently finished my latest BIONICLE project, everyone's favourite recurring boss, The Pursuer. This build took place over a few weekends, and uses a few painted parts in the sword and shield. Now of course it's not 100% screen-accurate, but at this scale it's quite hard to achieve that. I'm pleased with how he came out anyway, and I hope you like him too! Feel free to check out the rest of my Flickr page too, there's more angles of this guy, and loads of other stuff to look at while you're there. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin (and why it’s worth playing) Posted: 29 Nov 2020 11:55 AM PST Lately, I came across multiple posts of newcomers to Souls asking what games should they start with, what to play after finishing either the first or the third, or if Dark Souls II is a worthy game. To no one's surprise, Dark Souls II was presented as an unworthy game by quite a lot of people without any in-depth reasons. With this post I aim to convince newcomers and veterans alike why the game is worth playing. I have no desire to convince people how good it is, what does better or worse than its peers, why it should be your favorite or anything of the like. No. This will solely focus on why Dark Souls II it's worth your time and forming an opinion for yourself. Since this will likely end up being lengthy, I will highlight aspects that may interest you. This post will be free of any spoilers for the saga. With this being said, these are my arguments. Why the whole stigma? The stigma behind Dark Souls II lies in its poorly received launch. The launch saw the game with game breaking bugs, a new mechanic called agility, which FromSoftware never bothered to properly explain, the online was awful and the game's design was questionable. Enemies placement generated a cheap sense of difficulty, hitboxes seemed all over the place and the graphics were not what was promised. The game was still played by many, but was considered an unworthy sequel to Dark Souls. Agility, iFrames and how rolling works In every Souls game you have something called iFrames (or invincibility frames). This mechanic allows the player to avoid taking damage for a small window while you're rolling, and allows the character to dodge attacks. Dark Souls and Dark Souls III have their iFrames tied to equipment load alone. With Dark Souls II you also have a stat called agility that governs how many iFrames you get. Agility can be increased by spending points in adaptability and attunement. For non-spellcasters, adaptability is the only attribute you need to invest in, while for spellcasters it's more convenient to invest in both. After all, attunement is what gives you spell slots. Reaching 105 agility is your goal in the early game. With 105 agility you have the same amount of iFrames as fast rolling in Dark Souls. An easier way for understanding this mechanic is by watching this video. And here you have it. Dark Souls II reputation for bad hitboxes is actually an unexplained mechanic. Why is Dark Souls II any better now? One year after its launch, the game received its definitive edition with Scholar of the First Sin. With this release, FromSoftware patched almost every bug and improved the game in every area. The graphics were enhanced, the performance was improved, the enemy and item placement were adjusted, exploration was made more intriguing, new things were added, the story was expanded. Dark Souls II: SotFS was the master work Dark Souls II should have been at launch. Despite the game finally being a worthy Souls game, it was not meant to last. Why is the game still looked down upon? A few days after SotFS was launched, Bloodborne was released. The game was regarded as Miyazaki's magnum opus. One year later, Dark Souls III arrived with its perfect ending to the saga, acclaimed by critics and players alike. Despite its effort to become the fascinating game that is now Dark Souls II: SotFS, the community was drawn to FromSoftware's latest titles, while Dark Souls II was forgotten. The memories and thoughts people carried with them weren't about how good Scholar was, but rather how bad the launch product was. That's where the stigma around this game came from. But still, why should you play it? After all, no matter how much Scholar was polished, the game is still Dark Souls II at its core. What about its level design, story, music, bosses and other aspects? Well, let's delve into them. Story & lore For reassurance, this will not feature any spoilers. Drangleic is a kingdom brimming with stories of betrayal, corruption, misguided deeds, loyalty, suffering and many other motifs. You have loyal knights and friends fighting each other, monarchs getting corrupted, while their close friends are watching helplessly, intriguing game of thrones, people dealing with the threat of hollowing, people doing their best, only to result in the worst, personal quests driven by anguish. The game offers a variety of stories worth listening to. The protagonist, also known as the Bearer of the Curse, has an intriguing and personal journey ahead of him. While the other protagonists follow their prophecy, the Bearer of the Curse follows its own quest. This is highlighted as soon as the cinematic. This is a small detail, but makes the entire journey feel more personal and intimate. Characters One thing that stays with you after beating these games are the characters. Just how many people fondly remember of Solaire or Siegmeyer. With Dark Souls II you have a variety of characters. Some boring, some interesting and some of the best in the entirety of Souls. There is especially one character that truly resonates with the player on a personal level, offering a dark, mournful, sad, yet beautiful questline. Another fascinating character is a defeated man, who one, just like the protagonist, sought to discover a cure for hollowing. Its personality, dialogue, lore, design and voice acting are some of the best in the saga. The ratio between boring and interesting characters leans more towards the boring ones. Even so, the main cast is composed of intriguing characters. Boring characters usually fall into traders or side NPCs without quests. Combat Dark Souls II's combat is a bit faster than Dark Souls and slower than Dark Souls III. In essence, it's using almost the same combat system as its peers, which makes sense since they're part of a series. It's a fluid and entertaining combat system. Exactly what you'd expect from a Dark Souls game. What received an improvement that truly stands out from Dark Souls, or even Dark Souls III in some regards, was its magic system. Dark Souls II introduced new spells and even an entire magic branch, called Hexes, which are an improvement over the spells from Dark Souls' DLC. It's a whole new world of magic to explore with its unique quirks and spells. Builds One of the joys of playing a Dark Souls game is coming with a unique character, centered around your preferences. Dark Souls II offers that. It offers a high range of weapons from all classes, the magic system adds even more variety with lots of spells to chose from, weapons can be powerstanced, spellcasting only is entirely possible and entertaining thanks to herbs that allow you to recover MP, there are lots of infusions to choose from and you get to reach level 170 on an average playthrough, which gives you enough points to create your character they way you see fit. Also, amours and attires are present in a large number, with some beautiful designs. There are enough of them for the player to customize his character's appearance to his liking. Sound Design & music The sound design was a letdown from Dark Souls. In the first game, the sound produced when you're attacking an enemy is amazing. It gave you a sense that you're actually hitting metal on metal or metal on flesh. In Dark Souls II the sound design is decent, it's not going to distract you or ruin the experience. Most games have much worse sound design and get a free pass (looking at you modern Assassin's Creed). In Dark Souls II is decent, even good, but it's a letdown from Dark Souls' amazing sound design. As for the original score, the game sees Motoi Sakuraba reprising his role as composer, alongside Yuka Kitamura. The OST is simply brilliant. On one hand, you have the soft, refined, epic and elegant music of Motoi Sakuraba. On the other, you have the grandiose, exquisite, stunning and energizing music of Yuka Kitamura. The marriage of these two works resulted in a gorgeous OST. Level Design Dark Souls II offers a variety of boring, mediocre, remarkable and truly brilliant areas for exploration. After you complete the tutorial area, which is optional, you are put on the path of defeating the four Old Ones. The game gives you the freedom to go after them in whatever order you see fit. It is in this freedom that each playthrough is unique, because you'll always follow the path that offers you the best items for your build. And all of these areas are doable without completing them in a specific order. Of course, some of them are harder than others. The levels themselves present the player with plenty of exploration. For each area you can either continue your progress or explore every creak and corner for items, illusory walls and other secrets. A problem with Dark Souls II is that, compared to its peers, the main game's areas are often lackluster. There are some great levels featuring intricate progression, great enemies to fight, intriguing lore, interesting secrets, amazing structure and remarkable architecture. However, there are also lots of areas that are simply mediocre. In term of level design, the DLCs is where Dark Souls II shines. All of the aforementioned aspects that make for a beautiful level are present here. The areas in the DLCs are gorgeous and a pleasure to explore. Truly some of the best level design FromSoftware (or any game developer) has ever come with. Bosses Fighting bosses is the epic culmination of completing an area, it's the challenge before continuing your journey, it's the moment where you get revelations about the lore, it's the moment you get an adrenaline rush. With Dark Souls II you'll have that, but you have to make your way through mediocre bosses first. The number of bosses was clearly a priority, instead of focusing on fewer, more developed ones. There is a large number of bosses with mediocre design, limited moveset, dull arenas and uninteresting lore. Some of them merely pose a challenge, while others are tedious to defeat. There are good bosses scattered throughout the game, with interesting lore and beautiful fights, but you have to fight through a slug of uninspired ones to reach them. With this being taken out of the way, Dark Souls II offers some of the best boss fights in gaming. There are bosses in this game with such beautiful lore, stunning arenas, gorgeous music, amazing presentation and intricate design that basically redeem all the mediocre ones. In the DLCs especially, the boss fights are stellar. Nothing comes close to finishing the area, learning about who you're about to face, and then battling them. When Dark Souls II reaches its best bosses, those are phenomenal fights. So, is Dark Souls II a worthy game? You have to decide that by playing the game yourself. As for every other game on the market, it's your own opinion and preferences that decide which game should you play or avoid. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Nov 2020 10:29 PM PST It's extremely good! I very highly recommend this weapon to anyone going for sword and board or light weapon build... I've been seeing some people here talking about saving your twinkling titanite for bigger weapons, but I gotta say I strongly disagree. Here's why: This weapon has one of the longest ranges of any light weight weapon of its caliber while still being a "swing" weapon. Straight up, you can break poison jars with its attack while being out of range of the poison radius. This combined with the speed of the scimitar and the damage it provides makes for a deadly PvP weapon that few builds seem to be able to deal with very well. It is much much faster than any heavy weapon, and while it may not do as much damage, the 30 poise damage it provides is formidable, especially when paired with the "Stone Ring". Personally, I like to use it one-handed along side a shield, but that's not to say it isnt good at being double handed as well... If you like dual wielding, it goes very well with the "red rust sword" as it has a nice quad attack while power stanced. However, i do not recommend dual wielding much in this game unless you're using fists as power stance attacks are committed for a longer period of time than most normal attacks and are easier to parry. I've been doing as much PvP with this weapon as I can (im a sword and board int/str gish) and have been having massive amounts of success. I rushed for it as soon as i had the idea and did some comparing and testing on previous characters, but suffice to say, This is something that i've put a decent amount of testing to. Currently reking face still and im now halfway through NG+... If any of yall have ideas for comparable weapons or builds please let me know :) ... last thing i'll say as its a point of pride, I still have yet to lose to anyone wielding a red iron twiblade. I know that weapon is very highly regarded (at least for PvE) to be one of the better weapons in the game. [link] [comments] |
I was doing a no death/no bonfire run when this happened. Posted: 29 Nov 2020 08:17 AM PST Here's the link to the clip. https://m.twitch.tv/clip/TangentialPleasantToadKappaWealth I've seriously never seen this happen and I have quite a lot of time in this game. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:53 AM PST Disclaimer: I have only played Dark Souls Remastered before and I have around 300hours on it So this Steam autumn sale I decided to give Dark Souls 2 a try despite all the negative things I read everywhere on the internet. And surprisingly, I'm enjoying the fuck out of it so far. At first it took me some time to adjust myself to the game, since the controls and the gameplay just feels a lot more different than DS:R, and it was frustrating, but other than that I have like zero complaints so far. I've finished going through No Man's Wharf today, got to Lost Bastille and then Sinner's Rise and killed the boss there. And holy fuck was it FUN!! Ever since I finished Dark Souls I was in search of another game worth playing, finishing that game made me go hollow irl. And I can't believe I didn't buy Dark Souls 2 just because of the negative things I read online. Just thought I'd get this off my chest y'all [link] [comments] |

The game just absolutely did me Posted: 29 Nov 2020 10:32 AM PST Slight possible spoiler alert but nothing major. Was in Shulva Sanctum City and these platforms move up and down by hitting these pillars. One at the top and one at the bottom. Except I take one down and this platform goes no where. A square platform at the bottom of a cliff. No way back up. I'm sat at the bottom totally helpless. You can just run off the edge and appear at the next bonfire, fine but what about your souls? If you go to retrieve them it would just be an endless feedback loop of getting your souls back and dying. Not really a big deal as I just homeward boned (haha boned) it out of there so no harm done but I just love how the game just leaves you helpless. Well done developers. [link] [comments] |

Whoops! I killed the guy who summoned me. Posted: 29 Nov 2020 01:16 PM PST I'm new to DS2 and I was stuck at the bonfire in the Forest of Fallen Giants in the castle. I got sick of dying so decided to put my summon sign down to help out a fellow skeleton. I got summoned along with another bro and we made our way to the Pursuer (I had seen the Pursuer by myself like twice and died both times). We got there and I ran behind the furthest huge bow and arrow thing. I got the Pursuer with some shots from it and he was down to a miniscule amount of health. He remained in my cross hairs so I continued to fire. I killed him. Unfortunately I didn't realize that I could harm the dude who summoned me! I killed him too! I didn't know it was my fault until I too was hit by the bow and arrow thing by someone I summoned later on. I'm sorry skeleton! [link] [comments] |
I apparently still have much to learn Posted: 29 Nov 2020 09:24 AM PST As I have just learned you can parry scythes and the skeleton lords. The more you know. [link] [comments] |
New player looking for some specific tips Posted: 29 Nov 2020 07:08 AM PST I'm planning on going for a strength build and later branch out to faith, and relying on dodging rather than use shields. I know about levelling adaptability to increase the i-frames but I've read about the game having some bad hit zones. I also know that some attacks can't be dodged through but will it become frustratingly difficult if I don't use a shield? And are there any must have mods? (SotFS version) I'll be playing offline, so being banned isn't an issue. I found a mod called DSfix2, but the durability bug its aimed at seems to be patched now. [link] [comments] |
Just beat the belfry gargoyles first try!! Posted: 29 Nov 2020 01:04 PM PST I just beat the belfry gargoyles first try whom are considered one of the hardest bosses in the game. [link] [comments] |

Platinum Trophy! Praise the Sun! Posted: 29 Nov 2020 12:19 PM PST I've just platinumed DS2! If you check my post history, you'll see it was about two months after platinuming the original. My final character was level 250-ish. In NG, I almost obsessively "cleared" areas. After 13 deaths enemies disappear? Yes. Well, guess what I'm doing during conference calls? Killing. So my level got quite high. I started with the rapier, but found I missed the katana movesets from DS1, so I played most of the middle of the game with a bunch of different katanas. Yeah, I had like five or six katanas all the way up to +10. Getting weapons up to max is waaaay easier in this game than in DS1 - you have a good farming area right next to a bonfire, and a slab drops every five minutes or so. Contrast that with DS1, where the only slab farming area doesn't even have a bonfire and the drop is ultra-rare - like one for every hour of work in my experience. I ran basically the whole game with the Nahr Alma Set, Jester's Gloves, Tseldora Trousers, Watchdragon Parma, and the highest version of the covetous rings I had on me. After I got the Helm of Avarice, I was running that instead of the Nahr Alma hood - just to max the souls I got and the item drops. Boss I died to the most was the Fume Knight. I ended up beating him nude, with a uninfused rapier, and rings to boost damage and stamina - I just kept rolling, R1 unshielded stab once or for some of his recovery animations twice (but never three times), and then rolling again. Boss I fought the most was the ivory king - but that was because I just kept feathering away when he'd show up so as to keep farming loyce souls. Also, when I started fighting Ivory, I respec'd my character (again) to a quality build with faith (I had the levels to burn by that point), and from then on out I was running with a lightning grand lance. Honestly, I loved that build, because it stacked so damn well with the lightning miracles (I had gotten sunlight spear very early on through farming sunlight medals from falconers). I don't know why everyone loves on the rapier more than the grand lance, the grand lance is just phenomenal. That charging R2 attack is great for any tough enemies, and all the NPC invaders fall for it every time, so that they're not even the barest of challenges. I beat every boss but the King's Pets in the frigid outskirts. I got annoyed with the Frozen Reindeer, decided to deal with it later, and then forgot about it until after I'd already started NG+. If you are looking to platinum, I strongly advise getting all the trophies in your NG run that you can. That should be literally everything except for four: the collection trophies for the hexes, pyromancies, miracles, and sorceries. In fact, if you feel like using bonfire ascetics, you can do everything except the pyromancy and miracle trophies. I didn't do this, I only used ascetics once in NG: to do three boss fights against the Prowling Magus and Congregation in Brightstone Cave Tseldora with Benhart of Jugo (so as to get the number of wins necessary with him to get his trophy - Lucatiel's just came without effort). If I was doing it over, I would use ascetics to get the second soul (instead of waiting for NG+) from the bosses The Rotten, The Duke's Dear Freja, the Old Iron King, and the Lost Sinner (because those souls are required for spells that form part of the collection trophies). I didn't do this, and so had to run through all those areas again in NG+. In NG+2 (required to get to Chancellor Wellager), I used ascetics and farmed the rotten to get the required souls to unlock the shrine of winter. If I was doing it all over again, I'd get those four spells from the second soul dropped by those bosses in NG via ascetics, and farm the Rotten in both NG+ and NG+2 to move through as quickly as possible. I didn't think I could actually beat The Rotten at NG+7 difficulty, but guess what? It's totally doable. Hit it with the miracles while lucatiel acts like a tank, then use items to get more miracles, rinse and repeat. I was using everything I could to increase casting speed and lightning damage, and usually lucatiel would get through about 80% of the encounter, leaving me only a little bit of rolling and hitting to finish him off. If I'd done that I could have really flown through NG+ the same way I did NG+2. Anyway. I really loved this game. The locations were gorgeous - my favorites were Dragon Aerie and Heide's Tower of Flame. No area really annoyed me the same way as DS1, there wasn't anything like the Tomb of Giants or Blighttown in terms of annoyance. I'd say perhaps that the Gutter was annoying, only because of the number of times I had to go through the area to light all the scones for the optional invader to show up. I'd have to say my favorite boss was Vendrick. It wasn't even a challenge (yes, I killed the Ancient Dragon for the fifth giant soul). It felt more like putting an ancient and long-suffering being out of its misery than a battle. Most rewarding boss to kill was either the ancient dragon (it took a few tries) or the fume knight (more than a few). Finding Freja early on in NG+ was surprising, and I wish I'd been better prepared for it so I didn't have to go all the way through the level to kill her. Thanks for reading. On to DS3. (I've got to platinum DS3 and Bloodborne still before I'll let myself get a PS5.) [link] [comments] |
