This is my least favourite part of interacting with the rest of the souls community. Every time a popular streamer starts streaming a Fromsoft game the 'DS2 bad' comments start coming even if the game has nothing to do with DS2 (It was the demon's souls remake in this case). I genuinely love the remake personally but is it impossible for the community to praise another game in the series, without shitting on DS2 first?

    Pro tip about dropped items

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 03:59 AM PST

A singular drop (that is, a drop that only has to be done once) will never take more than 200 trys with full item discovery gear (Symbol of avarice, Watchdragon parma, Prisoners tattters, covetous gold serpent +2). If it does it means:

    a) You're farming the wrong guy

    b) The drop already happened but you were killed before you could grab it, so it won't repeat, unless you burn a ascetic or do a new cycle.

I know it sounds dumb I wish I knew this sooner, would have saved me a lot of time.

    Lockdown + DS2 = love?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 09:28 AM PST

So I'm on lockdown for the next month and I've never been the best at this specific souls. The changes to adaptability and vitality or vigour or whichever one it was didn't compute very well to me but here we are.

I've 100%ed it twice on different versions so I've beaten everyone before BUT I've been try to refine a faster route through the game and today I managed to beat it in 3h28 which isn't mad but for me it's a bit of an achievement, I didn't die until iron keep and that was a back step off of a ledge which tilted me a little.

But honestly after the last few days and hopefully the next few weeks of shaving off the odd minute here and there. I've found a new appreciation of this game it's widely laughed at for being the worst souls but I think I'm falling in love with it. Even the clunky bits.

I beat all the bosses and I'm super proud! This game is amazing.

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 06:21 AM PST

Just had to tell the community. I haven't really enjoyed any video games for the past few months and have had this sitting in my library for over a year. Picked it up about a month ago and loved every second of it. Admittedly I summoned for a few bosses like Blue Smelter Demon and the three douchebags in Shulva but I'm still super happy.

Y'all are rad. Love this game. Love this community.

So there are still invaders with infinite spells roaming about.

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 10:11 AM PST

Hello everyone. Earlier today I got invaded in No Man's Wharf by someone. I had a lot of souls on me so I ran to the bonfire. Then they show up and start spamming either Forbiden Sun or Great Chaos Fireball. On NG. On a SM of about 60k, maybe less. So, people are doing this.

I really dont understand why someone would feel the need to cheat on such a game. And even if this wasn't cheating, what joy could you get by hunting down a naked player wielding a hand axe trying to survive No Man's Wharf. I would understand it if I was at 1m SM in the arena, but not here.

Just in case the invader reads this. I barely get any time for gaming during the day, and I cannot even enjoy that because of people like you.

Also some advice in the form of a question. I heard it's possible to get banned by picking up items with broken stats. Is this happening?

Have you ever have any similar experiences? I would like to hear your stories.

    That is all.

The rapier (ice rapier in my instance) really is the boss killer

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 08:32 AM PST

Like it's not even close. It hits so hard for so little stamina. Jesus. The fume knight went down almost easily. Still sort of impressed with how easy it makes bosses

I passed NG+ with no bonfires, nor dying. Here are some tips. (LONG)

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 03:02 AM PST

First obvious step: You need to know how to pass the normal game without dying and bonfire. Duh. Don't even attempt it if you haven't done this before.

Second and very important: If you think you're ready, you're probably not. Let me list my equipment

    ARMOR

    - Smelter demon helmet +5 / Black witch veil +5 (BWV for curse/nashandra)

    - Havel armor +5

    - Havel bracers +5

    - Havel leggins +5 / Cat leggins (For descending into the gutter)

    WEAPONS

    - Santier + 5 (For npc invaders like forlorn)

    - Ropera +10 (For "normal" bosses)

    - Sanctum crossbow (dark) +10 (Mirror knight and throne watcher)

    - Mace +10 (For "strike" bosses or armored foes)

    - Chime disk +10 ( 1000 AR, buffs)

    - Black witch staff +10 ( 600 AR, Black mist)

    - Black hunter bow + 10 (Shrine of amana, iron keep)

    SPELLS

    - Sacred Oath

    - 4 Black mist

    CONSUMABLES

    - 99 Old radiant lifegems (26 left)

    - 99 lifegems (54 left)

    - 12 estus +5 (8 left)

    - 68 Wilted dusk herb ( 57 left)

    - 999 poison arrows (840 left)

    - 999 electric arrows (822 left)

    - 50 fire arrows (20 left)

    - 29 repair powder (19 left)

    - 99 of each resine (90 left of most)

    RINGS

    - All clutch rings

    - Third dragon ring

    - Resistance ring +1 (gutter + black gulch)

    - Poisonbite ring +1(gutter + black gulch)

    - Braceknuckle ring + 2 (sanctum crossbow chews durabilty)

    - Royal soldier ring +1

    - Chloranthy ring +1

    - Old leo ring (for ropera)

    - Ring of blades +1

    - Silvercat ring (Gutter)

    - Ring of whispers ( Manscorpion tark, not mandatory)

WITH ALL OF THIS EQUIPMENT, I BARELY MADE IT. If this was an exam I would have 6/10, keep that in mind. So, you're probably not ready.

Third: Keep very keen eyes and very sharp ears at all time, because the game puts a lot of new enemies, specially red spirits.

The two that are the most trouble are:

    a) Two artificial undead on the way to skeleton lords that will try to sandwich you.

    b) Two alonne captains inside the vat of the smelter shortcut.

Fourth: DO NOT FIGHT red spirits that aren't common enemies (Faram knight, elite knight, Executioner knight). Sure, you can do it, but it is a waste of time, resources, and a very good chance of dying. Be specially aware of the executioner knight in heide's tower of flame and the drakekeeper knight in front of drangleic. Do not engage them in melee.

Fifth: I heavily recommend putting some time on investigating the bosses weaknesses and if they are accompanied by some minor enemies (Lost sinner, flexile sentry)

Six: Do not fight the throne watcher and defender + nashandra at the same time. Do it on separated fights and with Benhart + Vengarl. Use the sanctum bow, brace knuckle ring +2 and repair powder for the throne couple.

My stats were 32 all over the board, no specific build. I can't do a full guide on text, that would be too long, but these tips could save your run.

Thanks for reading and good luck skeleton.

    Oh how I've missed 60fps

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 10:54 PM PST

I loved Dark Souls 1. Loved it enough that I bought Dark Souls 2. I loved DS2 so much more than DS1, even. Nowadays, I mostly play Sekiro, and can't even play DS3 because fps never breaks 30.

I recently revisited Dark Souls 2 for some good ol' PVP, and MY GOD is 60fps such a beautiful, beautiful, blessing. If Sekiro was 60fps I might actually have never stopped playing it.

I can only hope Elden Ring attempts 60fps on consoles, but I know From Soft doesn't give a damn about that, so who knows.

Does powerstance give you straight up 2x more damage?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 12:06 PM PST

I began playing with my friends and decided to run a faith build. We finally beat the game, my build was maxed out, and from then I decided to get the platinum trophy for the game.

To get to the point, I finished the game with a lightning dragonslayer's crescent axe, but I have a maxed out lightning heide knight sword too. Since I plan to beat the game almost 2 more times and don't care for pvp, I figured while I level up more, I should try to power stance those two weapons since I remember having a hard time deciding which one to use since they are very similar.

My question is, is something like that viable? Those two weapons are very close in damage, so when I power stance them, am I essentially getting 2x damage per swing, or is there some sort of damage calculation that lowers the damage of each individual weapon by 0.75x or something?

I also have a maxed out defenders greatsword that I used. Will my DSCA and HKS powerstance be stronger than my defenders greatsword? Should I aim even bigger and incorporate the defenders greatsword in my powerstance?

I appreciate any answers and advice.

    Giving DS2 another chance

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 10:52 AM PST

What would you all recommend? I consider myself a veteran to all other Soulsborne games, I have a lot of fun with about any build but in a very cliche fashion I always end up with a character able to do anything that wields a heavy 2 handed weapon.

The first -and only- time I played 2 I made a horrible mess of a character, using that famous cover art armor and some weird weapon that is similar to what Thanos uses in Avengers.

If I'm to give this game a second chance I need an excuse, so again I ask, what is fun?

    Universal Souls Abbreviations

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 09:35 AM PST

This is mainly for me. I just wanted this so I could keep track of Abbreviations for Souls games. If it helps others, then great! I hope this is helpful.

DeS: Demon Souls. I prefer to abbreviate it as Demon Souls, rather than as Dark Souls.

DeSR: Demon's Souls. The remake of the original Demon Souls.

DS: Dark Souls 1. The original Dark Souls.

DS:PTDE: Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition. Main Game + DLC. Artorias.

DSR: Dark Souls 1 Remastered. 'updated' Dark Souls 1 + DLC.

DS2: Dark Souls 2. The sequel, main game.

DS2:COTSK: Shulva, The Sanctum City DLC. Sinh, The Slumbering Dragon. The Gank Squad.

DS2:COTIRK: Brume Tower, the second DLC. Fume Knight, Sir Alonne.

DS2:COTIVK: Eleum Loyce, the third and final DLC. Ava, The Kings Pet, Burnt Ivory King.

DS2:SOFTS: Dark Souls 2 with remastered enemy locations, new final boss, and all DLC.

DS3: Dark Souls 3. The Final game in the trilogy. Main Game.

DS3:AoA: Ashes Of Ariandel. The first DLC. Sister Friede.

DS3:RC: The Ringed City. The end of Dark Souls. Darkeater Midir, Slave Knight Gael.

    BB: Bloodborne. The main game.

BB:TOH: The Old Hunters. Combined the original planned DLC. Ludwig, The Holy Blade, Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower.

SK: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. I haven't played it yet, so I'm not entirely familiar with the DLC.

If I missed anything, please let me know. I'll add it. I hope this is helpful for people picking up a From game.

This game taught me an important lesson

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 09:23 AM PST

At the end of the day, as much as this series is revered, and as much as my first play through of each (finished Bloodborne, DS1, and now Scholar of the First Sin) was something I saw as a personal challenge, these games are great because they are not only challenging, but FUN, and if I am not enjoying a piece of optional content, or are simply ready for the game to end, I can skip it, and that's okay.

I was ready to move on from the game after reaching Castle Drangleic for the first time, and with my insistence on completing the DLC as well, I wound up with an additional 25 or so hours to go when I was more than ready to wrap up.

Because of this, much of the DLC felt like a slog, and when I discovered I had missed a boss in the main game (the covenant one) I groaned at the thought of extending the game even FURTHER.

To be clear, that's not a comment on quality, but my own mindset by this point in the game. I truly did not enjoy the first or third DLCs (besides the final boss of each) but I think that would change if I played them again when I actually WANTED to play them, rather than feeling obligated to do so.

It was while throwing myself against a wall to get to the 3 man boss in Crown of the Sunken King (the bonfire run was essentially everything I didn't enjoy about the game so far condensed into one tiny section) that I realized: this is a GAME, a very fun game, and I am NOT having fun... so I stopped. I moved on. I wound up finishing all of Old Iron King, but skipped the optional boss/area of Ivory king as well as the covenant boss.

I allowed myself to use NPC summons, or even players (big shout out to the guy who not only helped me with Sit Alonne, but guided me to items I missed along the way!) things I never did in previous games besides 2 early bloodborne bosses where my friend was introducing me to the series... and I was having fun again.

A day will probably come when I replay each of these games, and that will be a day when I am ready to sink my teeth into the challenge for as long as it will have me, but this time around, the most important thing I learned is that it's okay to simply move on, if you're not having fun...

    That said...

OH MY GOD, THANK GOD THIS GAME DOESN'T JUMP RIGHT TO NG+ AT THE END! I'LL GET THOSE BOSSES ONE DAY, NOW I'M SURE OF IT!

    The Torch

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 08:49 PM PST

Alright, beating Freja has me getting reminded on how good of a concept the torch was, and how underutilized it was. While I understand they changed things from the original gameplay trailer (if things were too dark, it would take away from the gameplay to have your one hand a torch 24/7). Its a really neat concept: use the torch to brighten dark areas, making it easier to navigate and combat in. Some enemies react differently towards light than others, like the darklurkers and the spiders. The big problem is that you barely use it. By the time you fight freja you have over two hours of torch time left. You can equip the torch, casually stroll around through the spider-infested no-no land, and still be set for the boss fight. Not to mention the obvious fact that some places, like No-Man's Wharf, seem like they should be a lot darker and atmospheric than they should be, but are easily traversable even without a torch. It reminds me of DSR where things are a lot brighter and less spooky than they should be.

I think there should be some sort of tradeoff. Using the sinner boss fight as an example here, if you don't use the torch to light the arena (or use those things outside the arena with the torch), you can't lock-on. Now, we the player can still see the sinner even without this light, for gameplay reasons, but no lock-on makes the fight harder for players who normally lock on to every enemy. Originally, in the darker version of the game, this probably made a very interesting fight, fighting a boss in a super dark arena with no lock on, or using the torch's valuable time limit to gain a lock-on feature. What the final game should have done, is give constant tradeoffs like that. Not being able to lock-on would definitely have made the wharf more interesting, and would give even more incentive towards using said torch.

TLDR; The Torch is cool and good. They should have found a way to use it more.
