The appreciation for different play styles

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 10:59 PM PDT

Was reading an earlier post about using the Zweihander and it just made me appreciate dark souls even more. Honestly one of the best things about the souls series is that everyone can find a unique weapon or fighting style that suits how they like to play the game. There are no necessarily wrong answers or 'right' way to play the game, and I think that's a crucial part of what makes the games great, and brings us all back :D

How I defeated moonlight on my first playthrough just now.

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 10:50 PM PDT

Beatrice. I was exploring the garden, seemed like the next place to go after beating gargoyles. I went to basin, but got scared by drakes, so I turned back to garden. I was already human from kindling one bonfire, so after kindling another, I kept exploring, until I found a ruined tower. I saw a glowing thing under a bush, and I think there was a message about a secret, so I attacked the bush, and saw a summon, me thinking why not, forgetting you can't quit after summoning, I summoned and when I saw the fog and realized I couldn't quit, (and forgetting about separation crystal), I decided why not and went in.

Now this may seem like a normal beatrice summon story, but it's not. The witch did attack the butterfly, but the boss attacked me before it died. I tried rolling, but I got caught and died. Yet, right as I died, I saw the boss was almost dead, and the witch ended up killing the boss. So in spite of me dying, I still got the victory and boss soul. Very well made game, legit am loving it.

Lore wise, how do npcs get into Sen's fortress and Anor Londo before you?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 09:45 PM PDT

I noticed there are a good number of npcs, such as prince Ricard and Iron tarkus who make it past sen's gate before you ring the bell of awakening. Does this mean they all rang the bells too? If so, did they kill quelaag and the gargoyles also? Or perhaps because time is convoluted, they passed through sen's fortress after you opened the gates but before you go through. I couldn't find any explanations on this myself. Any thoughts?

    First Playthrough Complete...

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 01:22 AM PDT

After much stalling and prepping for NG+, I could finally see no more reason to put off Gwyn's inevitable demise.

Really enjoyed the overall experience, and can't wait to dive back in immediately.

Behold your new Lord Of Darkness.

I just noticed this now after over 300 hours on this game.

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 09:29 AM PDT

Bonfires don't create smoke while regular fire in the game does (torches or whatever). Not a huge discovery. I'm sure this has been noticed before but I just felt like sharing. Have a good day.

    Kalameet or Midir

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 08:53 PM PDT

I'm not sure if I'm violating the rules here since it regards ds1 and ds3. I'm posting this because I just recently beat kalameet on my first playthrough so I can finally form an opinion on whose the best dragon fight. Personally I lean far more towards Midir, but I wanted to know other people's opinions on the matter too.

Dark Souls - Skyrim Sword beauties

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 12:51 AM PDT

I know Dark Souls and Skyrim fans have their differences, but did anyone think the Zweihander from DS and the steel great sword from Skyrim, look almost identical? The pommel and leather wrapping around the middle spikes in Skyrim are the only noticable differences they have. Now, I'm not bashing either game, I played Skyrim first but prefer DS, I just never heard anyone say anything about the swords yet, and thought it could be a fun little topic to discuss. :)

    I did it.

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 05:32 PM PDT

I first picked up Dark Souls in March of 2016 when a friend of mine gave me his old PS3 and a bunch of games. I didn't do great, set it down, then came back to it a couple months afterwards.

It felt awesome the first time I defeated Gwyn. NG+ had its way with me- especially Four Kings- and that's where I put it down to come back to later because that platinum was really, really close.

My girlfriend got me a PS4 for my birthday in 2018. I blasted through Bloodborne and loved it, earning the platinum pretty quickly, and had an eye on the Dark Souls Remaster to buy eventually.

Then I saw Dark Souls II on sale around Christmas this past year. Bought it, greatly enjoyed it. Dark Souls III was next. Also had a fucking blast with that.

Finally, I saw Remastered on sale and grabbed it. Picked it up. Played it. Loved it.

I suffer from depression, and the past few years have been, by far, some of the most difficult times of my life. I came real close to going hollow more than a few times.

Dark Souls has not just given me a fantastic series of games to play through- hundreds of hours invested over time- it also has given me a new tool in the ongoing battle against my mental illness by shifting my perspective and through the "keep going, try it again, you're learning how to be better" mechanics of the gameplay.

Because of this, it's one of two video games that I'm planning on having tattoed on my body- so that I might have a physical, visual manifestation of these things. (The other is Legend of Zelda, for similar reasons.)

Anyways, this is all important because aftermore than four and a half years, I just tonight earned the platinum trophy in Dark Souls Remastered. I wasn't prepared for the emotional outpouring I experienced. It's triumph mixed with sadness. I've accomplished something great, something I've been striving for, but now I feel like I've gotten to the top of a mountain and the other ones to climb seem diminished.

So thank you, Dark Souls- and From Software. You've done more good for me than you could possibly realize, and if this chapter of my gaming life is closed then it's been one of the most beneficial. I'm certain to come back to it now and then like I do with every Zelda game, but this nevertheless feels like an end.

(A very special thanks to Writing On Games' video on how Dark Souls helped with his depression, and Indie Bytes' similar video from an outside perspective for helping me realize why and how the game impacted me so much.)

    Quelana question

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 09:53 PM PDT

I went down to BTown as soon as Lorentious upgraded my pyro flame to +15. I see nothing in the her drop down to Ascend it further. I know it can go to +5 ascension (as I've done it before five years ago roughly)... is there an event I need to do first? She sells spells but no upgrade.

    Sl1 tips needed

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 04:10 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I finished my fifth SL1 run and I wanted to know what weapons do you use in sl1 that or not the lightning hammer of the blacksmith or pyromancy. I did one sl1 run without pyro and it was with a lightning reinforced club. If some of you have cool weapons to use in sl1, could you share with me? Thank you all.

I just beat my first Challenge Playthrough

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 01:11 AM PDT

If anyone is interested in doing a Pyromancy only Run here's my guide 1 pick pyromancer with master key...duh 2 grab twin humanity's and run to blight town bonfire 3 become human and kill Man Eater Mildred your eight fireballs won't be enough so I recommend baiting her to fall to her death on the wheel 4 run to quelag and summon her try to bait quelags attacks and let Mildred Handel it Mildred can easily take down quelag since she is immune to pyromncy 6 ring the bell and get turned into egg head 7 go cheese Discharge for easy souls 8 go to daughters of chaos bonfire and talk to egg man engi he will give you an egg vermifuge and the ability to purchase toxic mist buy it we need it later 9 spend all your souls on leveling up the glove 10 join quelanas cov to get great chaos fire ball. That should get you a good start if you are interested in doing a pyro only run tell me and I will post all 100 steps to do this run.

TIL the Prepare to die edition on PC comes with an online user manual on steam.

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 01:26 PM PDT

I've never noticed that in the thousands hours I have in that game. It's clearly dated and even has some wrong information, but hey still it's a piece of Dark Souls' history!

    https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/211420/manuals/DarkSouls_PC_Manual_Online_GB.pdf?t=1580310551

It even talks about very obscure mechanics like Vagrants, and Miracle Synergy Rings!

    Artorias is cruel but fair

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 05:08 PM PDT

I really appreciate the bosses in this game that are demanding fighters but also there is nothing really cheap about them. I just beat Knight Artorias - it took me I think six tries. I don't think I took out any less than 40% of his health in any of them, and I always died because I either mistimed a dodge/roll or I got greedy and took a swipe at him when I didn't have adequate time or positioning.

Also the first time I bothered to use the Great Magic Weapon buff - I'm not sure TBH how much it did for me but my sword is cool looking I guess.

I take it Kalameet and Manus are way worse, though.

How is there water in the New Londo Ruins?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 11:29 AM PDT

If the abyss is below the water in New Londo Ruins how is the water there, why dose the water not drain into the abyss. I am ok with the answer "its a game", but I really carouse if there is a answer thats more lore appropriate.
