My least favorite souls game is a 10/10

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 05:48 AM PDT

This is gonna be a long one, and I don't mean to spew hate. I really love this game. Just airing my thoughts

I freaking love the soulsborne series, all five of them are in my top ten, but DS2 is pretty firmly at the bottom of the five for me. Don't get me wrong, I love the game to high heaven, but its just so... lacking(?) As a souls installment in my opinion. It does some stuff great, like being the first (and best) at stat allocation, making every damn stupid build i can come up with perfectly viable, bonfire ascetics and the forgiving exponential soul cost for levelling.

However, there are so many things that are done far worse than the others in my opinion, and apart from build diversity there's no huge point it excels at to me. Apart from False King Allant, Artorias, O&S and Manus, there really aren't any good bosses in DeS, DS or DS2 (in my opinion) . That honor goes to DS3 and bloodborne.

The level design is basically all shit to me (still top tier game-wise but the worst in soulsborne). I really disliked the transition into being able to warp from the get go after dark souls nailed the level design and practically forced you to enjoy it. In DS2 there aren't all that many examples of truly great use of short cuts or "wow, I'm back here again?!" Moments. The only one that really comes to mind outside dlc is the collapsing wall in forest of fallen giants. Ds3 suffers from this as well but I just barely prefer it over DS2 of entirely subjective reasons. (I understand this is ALL subjective but you catch my drift)

For all the praise the dlc's get i think they're really overhyped. They are by FAR the best level design in this game and Eleum Loyce ramparts is legitimately fun to explore, but it being a huge step up from the base game doesn't really help it when the level design of BB, DeS and DS' base game blow them out of the water by default.

Furthermore its the "hurr durr broken hitbox" argument. They are legitimately bad. Worse than in any other of the games. (Not counting ds1 lag stabs because that's more the net coding's fault). And "level adp" isn't really a good argument either because that's just excusing a shitty mechanic with another shitty mechanic. I can elaborate if people ask but I already feel like I'm beating a dead horse at this point

There are several other, smaller things I love/hate about this game -best fashion souls by FAR -but I hate the art style (not really the game's fault it doesn't suit my subjective eyes though) -Again, the freaking BONFIRE ASCETICS -But farming enemies without one or the champions despawns enemies -great changes implemented into NG+, love it to death -great build diversity -but why would I ever choose any other tactic than "big sword swish swoosh" against the 14 enemies all bundled up on my screen? -no notable bosses whatsoever. Sure, Raime killed me a bunch of times but so did Gael, who I had a lot more feelings toward, as well as it being difficult AND cool, not just difficult. -earthen peak elevator, shaded woods, black gulch, etc being really lazily designed. -having my favorite god damn weapon in the entire series, the ds2 greatsword.

The list goes on, and of course the other games suffer in many notable areas as well, but all of them excel at SOME huge area, while DS2 is like a lump of great and horrible ideas mashed together and baked in the microwave for half its required time.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to hate on the game or anyone who loves it. Hell, I love it! I just can't help but feel I would love it a hell of a lot more if it weren't titled DS2.

I've platinum this bad boy thrice now over the course of 2500 hours, gotten the illusory rings and have a max level character. But it can't even compare to its brothers in my opinion

I hope all of you guys loved it as much as I did tho

    Tl;dr: DS2 sucks hurr durr

Bonfireside Chat Podcast series on Dark Souls II appreciation

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 11:05 AM PDT

Can't recommend enough. This is my first run through Dark Souls II, and the "book club" style area-by-area deconstruction every episode is exactly what I needed. These games are so dense it's worth reviewing in a discussion format. I usually play afterwards or listen in a more challenging area. None of my friends play these weird-ass video games. It's cool to hear other opinions on what works and what doesn't!

Anyway, check it out, starts at episode 34

    I HATE SHRINE OF AMANA

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 12:04 PM PDT

Why you may ask? Because when the devs were making that place their conversation was probably: hey how about we put 5 super fast, hard hitting enemies with 800 health each in a tiny space together. Talking about archdrake warriors right now. and not only are they there but 15 fcking spellcasters ganking you at the same time? WTF FROMSOFTWARE

First video game to make me rage quit and not finish, thanks DS2

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 12:52 PM PDT

I've beaten 90% of the game, working through DLC, reluctantly fought my way through Shulva City and Dragon Shrine, fought all bosses. Brume Tower, Fume Knight took me 100x to beat, I'm at 60+ tries at Sir Alonne, and I can't even get to the Blue Smelter Demon in Iron Passage.

I can't even beat this fucking invader Maldron the Assassin and get the last ashen idol.

Seriously, does anyone actually like this DLC? It's become more aggravating than fun at this point and I've rage quit more than a few times.

I may just give up and try to play DS3...

I just got into DS2 and I think I screwed myself. Advice?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 07:30 AM PDT

I decided to go for all the achievements. This means I have to buy a bunch of stuff. I also want the rings. So I've been buying them too.

I made it to Heide after the Giant Forest and I've killed all 4 bosses so far. But, with every new merchant, I decided to go back and get the money to pay them before progressing.

This means that I've cleared out both areas I mentioned of enemies and have purchased everything from the dark, pyro, miracle, and other merchants I've found so far.

As you can guess, this was before I knew and soul memory. I have a soul memory of almost half a million now, and I need to join a few covenants and gain a few levels in them to get certain miracles or gestures. I haven't been summoned in the orange highlighted Heide since before I cleared the areas.

Am I screwed now? Is there a source for likely soul memory levels in each area? Should I run ahead to No Man's Wharf avoiding enemies and see if that will not me a summon or two? Should I do the same to become a sunbro?

Just beat Sihn with only ceastus

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 07:28 AM PDT

And man was it fun. These types of runs make you appreciate learning patterns and mastering patience because fights like this dragon will take a while to beat. Utilizing your dodges perfectly instead of focusing on blocking, taking chances to attack, taking into account your small range, not getting greedy with how fast powerstancing hand weapons consume stamina, taking into account the durability(even with the rings),all of those made this fight actually enjoyable rather a chore for how long it lasted. To anyone who wants challenge runs and hasnt done a double ceastus,i highly recommend it!

    Sotfs Hex weapon choices

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 01:39 PM PDT

Anyone have good suggestions for weapons to infuse on a hex build. I know about fire longsword but I used it on my pyro character and really don't want to use it for the whole game.

Old school SOTFS player returning to the game...have some questions

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 09:18 AM PDT

So 5 years ago it seemed like the game is dead. fast forward to now? def seems even more so dead than it was before......

Do fight clubs still happen? if so is it still the iron bridge?

Do people generously still drop fully maxed items and bags of souls these days?

How can I find resources on the best builds for different weapons? Im interested in a PVM build with red iron twin blade and a PVP noob build with chaos blade or blacksteel katana.

Id praise the sun but you know....BoB for life

    Iron Keep Shenanigans

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 08:02 AM PDT

Hello guys! Last weekend I started to play DS2 Sotfs for the first time. I'm not new into the souls universe, I played hundred of hours in the vanilla version and also completed all dlcs (f*ck frigid outskirts).

I'm amazed by the changes in Vanilla ~ Sotfs, it's got some ganks and some recurring npc invaders to keep you alert all the time.

    Anyway

I was in Iron Keep, getting my ass wrecked by the Alonne knights and Sharon and Dennis, after some deaths and rage I could deafeat the pricks and also the Smelter Demon and then proceed to the most annoying part of the dungeon, with the fire traps, lava, switches and turtles.

I was hollow, carefully cleaning the place using a bow and some poison arrows. The very moment that I steped in that room some NPC invasor showed up, he spawned way up above and then proceed to snipe my ass with some gigant arrows, after some time I was able to kill him with some arrows and stuff, I got up there, near the chest another npc invades me, I was able to kill him too, then I walk back to the ladder to advance though the dungeon when something strange happened:

The giant bow npc invades again.

I was in shock, I just killed that guy minutes ago and this f*cking prick is invading me again, and he spawned in the same location, near the chest up above in the map. This time I was unlucky and got pushed into the lava.

I was wondering if that was a npc or a player, but I think it couldn't be a player because I was hollow. Could be a glitch? When I came back to that place the invader didn't showed up.

It wasn't a Forlon, it was something like "Lusarc", "Lusac" I don't remember the correct name. I wasn't able to find info about some invader with that name.

Am I seeing things? Am I going hollow in real life? I need to know the truth!!

(Sorry about my english anyway, it's not my first language.)

    First time caster.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 11:40 AM PDT

New to casting in DSII, not the series as a whole. I am just starting out, level one. Should I go first for the Sorcerers Staff and focus on INT, or the Clerics Sacred Chime and focus on FTH. Would like your opinion, thanks.

Hey ah, yesterday I was watching some guides and I saw a video that shows a magic build for start and I'm thinking about use it in my first playthrough, in the other souls I always start as a knight with a big sword or a strong weapon always and I have never used sorceries but try it sound interesting, What do you think?

Not an essay just an opinion (it was also an response for why ds2 is the best, that's why it sounds like I'm talking to you)

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 08:55 AM PDT

the other 2 had miyazaki in production, wich for me is a bad thing, due to most of his ideas making the game have less freedom and some are just nonsensical (making rolls cost 0 stamina in ds3, hosts having advantages people beeing able to heal in pvp needing to alt+f4 150 times to get less pvp interactions, and then just use a item to reverse it) wich in ds2 i have all the freedom that i could want, making fume knight my third boss, done, full drakeblood knight only 1 boss killed done, making +10 no boss done. This freedom that only ds2 provide in the souls series is what make ds2 the best souls

    Running out of stamina

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 11:15 AM PDT

So I discovered that when sprinting if you deplete your stamina completely, you have to wait for your stamina to refill completely before running again. Fine typical of the series. You also seem to be penalized an extra second in this game...aah Dark Souls II

I am new to dark souls 2, any help?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 02:24 AM PDT

So me and my buddy have been doing a co op playthrough, and it has been flawless. Soon as I got to the Bridge approach bonfire in Hangman's Corpse, it stopped working. My friend can summon me just fine. The problem is I can't summon him. Well, I can't summon anyone actually. We are in the same Soul Memory Range, (mine is 800,000, his is 890,000)both Way of Blue covenant, we were using the same god with the name engraved ring, and have been the whole co op really. I tried going to Shaded Woods to summon him there and nothing, but as usual soon as I put my summon sign down, he was able to summon me that quick. I have tried exiting to the title screen and back, loading in and out, restarting my PS4, resetting my modem, resting and unresting at bonfire, waiting 10 minutes, having him set a new sign every other minute. We are both cross-region as well. There seems to be no connectivity issues as he can summon me no problem. I have no idea what else we can even do at this point. Does anyone by chance have any idea how to fix it? This is my first run through of Dark Souls 2, and it was flawless thus far and I was really enjoying it. I would appreciate help. It has been 3 days of being unable to summon now. I even tried summoning an NPC earlier and it failed. Oh, and our world death count was the exact same also. I can't find anything anywhere on what to do at this point. EDIT: Also both human, and no human effigy effect as well!
