Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread!

Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play!

For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls

Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games.

Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned:

    Dark Souls: Remastered

    Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

    Dark Souls III

    Our recommendations for safe modding

*This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account.

    Basic Steps:

    Make a separate Steam account

Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library.

Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory.

Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation.

Set Steam to "off line" mode.

Install the mods and perform any necessary setup.

Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods!

Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online!

What armor is right for me? A guide.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 03:54 PM PDT

Let me get the obvious out of the way first - armor will usually not make-or-break a character, and if you really like the look of a particular armor setup and it helps you enjoy the game more, then that's the armor you should use.

But, maybe you're a min-maxer and you want to figure out how to optimize your best armor suit. Well, you've come to the right place. But do be aware that there is no "best" armor in a general sense - which armor is best will depend on how you like to play and what you want it to do for you. So let's break it down.

Each piece of armor has many statistics, but we're going to group them into to 6. Weight, defense, general resistance, specific resistance, poise, and effect. Let's go through them. Before we begin, wikidot has some very useful tables for looking at armor. I recommend looking at them when considering your options: http://darksouls2.wikidot.com/head

    Weight

Weight is the single most important statistic, because it's the single downside (besides taking up the slot itself) that all armor has. Every positive stat should be weighed against the weight that the armor has. More weight means slower stamina recovery, shorter rolls (and potentially fat rolls), and fall damage.

Generally, the heavier the armor, the more effective it is. But weight corresponds with each other statistic in different ways, which we'll examine.

For now, the main things to keep in mind are 1) less weight is better, and 2) whichever armor you want to use, you should probably make sure it keeps you below 70% equip burden to avoid fat rolling.

    Defense

Defense reduces the amount of physical damage you take, with a base value, and a specific value across 3 different types (strike, thrust, and slash). This number can be somewhat confusing, as it is generally a straight reduction in damage - minus 1 point of damage per hit for every 10 defense. But it cannot reach zero damage, so as your defense gets closer to being equal to 10x the incoming attack, it gets less and less effective. That said, if you're getting close to negating the damage, you're probably in good shape anyway.

Defense is correlated positively with weight - the more the armor weighs, the more defense (physical damage reduction) it has. The relative effectiveness - defense per weight unit - is highest on light armor, but those usually still have fairly low overall defense owing to their light weight. Most armor of significant defense will have roughly 20 defense for every unit of weight.

The efficacy of defense varies greatly. Versus low-damage hits it makes a huge difference, but when enemies hit hard it doesn't have a huge impact. If you're planning versus specific bosses, you're usually better off leaving the heavy armor at home versus fume knight and vendrick, because they hit hard enough that you should focus on having good rolls and stamina recovery rather than armor. But for normal enemies in NG it can be a powerful stat.

That said, I usually wouldn't recommend picking armor for defense primarily.

    General Resistance

General resistant is looking across magic, dark, lightning, and fire resistances and averaging the values to get a general picture of the effectiveness of the armor against magic or elemental attacks. These resistances work differently than physical defense, because they are a percentage reduction in damage, not a numerical reduction. You start with 100 resistance to all elements, plus the resistance granted from your stats (int/faith) and armor (and any effects you might get from rings, spells, or environment, such as being wet). With 990 resistance, you take 1% damage and are essentially immune to that element.

Resistance has an unusual relationship with weight in that it's often inversely correlated. The best resistance gear is usually light weight. This is why armor like the Black Witch Robe is really good - it has the best resistances in its class, as well as a relatively low weight. Heavy armor like Havels, which has decent resistances, doesn't come close to black witch gear.

Because of how resistance works, the more you get, the better it is. Reducing 10% of magic damage when you're taking 90% of it already is nice, but not amazing. Reducing 10% of magic damage when you're already resisting it 85% suddenly means you're only taking 1/3 of the damage as before - a massive improvement. However, it's difficult to get such high resistances across the board unless you're consistently using spells like Great Magic Barrier.

The importance of resistances vary greatly depending on what you're doing, but because it doesn't require heavy armor, it's often a nice statistic to get off your armor if you don't want to commit a lot of weight. Resistance is the biggest reason to go with light armor instead of no armor (aka nekkid), because you can pay very little weight for quite a bit of resistance. I recommend sorting by resistance/weight in the wikidot tables to see which pieces of armor will be most effective.

    Specific Resistance

In some areas of the game - shrine of amana vs magic, ancient dragon vs fire - you really just need to resist one specific element. In those situations, it can be worth having armor tailored specifically for it, because hitting those really high numbers can make a huge difference - even from just hitting pretty high ones.

I recommend using the wikidot tables and sorting by whichever resistance you care about to find the optimal pieces. Usually weight is not a big consideration, because you're aiming to nearly negate the incoming damage, but as before the weight usually correlates negatively with the resistance, so you'll probably end up pretty light weight anyway.

    Poise

Poise is the attribute with the clearest correlation with weight of any attribute. Every other statistic can vary quite a bit, but if you want poise, you WILL pay for it with weight. It's also the most important attribute of armor aside from weight, especially in PvP, so it bears talking about in detail.

So first of all, what is poise? Poise is the amount of poise damage you can receive before going into recovery animation. Each attack has a poise damage number - usually more damage = more poise damage. Ironclad warriors, for example, deal a ton of poise damage, whereas rapier attacks do relatively little. When you're getting stucklocked by a manikin, it's because you didn't have enough poise.

Each attack on you depletes your poise "HP", until its empty at which point you go into recovery animation and your poise "HP" resets. This means that even with the beefiest havel setup imaginable, you'll still eventually go into recovery animation if you're attacked enough, even with a low-poise-damage attack. However, having more poise means you'll go into recovery animation less often, making it easier to get in attacks even while getting hit, or roll away successfully without getting stunlocked.

Poise "HP" does recovery, but very slowly, so it's not really worth worrying about too much.

In PvE, poise is nice, but usually not necessary. Trading hits is generally a bad strategy in PvE, where you should usually be trying not to get hit at all. It can still be very useful for slower weapons, but again isn't necessary if you're "gud".

In PvP, poise is a lot better because trading hits is expected. If you can poise through a hit and start landing your own, you can stunlock an opponent and win.

There are a few different approaches here. One method is to stack poise as high as possible and win the poise war, guaranteeing that your opponent will go into recovery before you.

The opposite approach is to ignore poise and either hit-and-run versus higher poise opponents, or get the stunlock first (via being "gud") versus other low-poise opponents.

And finally the middle-ground of trying to get enough poise to hit specific breakpoints (either slightly-greater-than-X, where X is the poise damage of a specific weapon, or slightly-greater-than-2X, 3X, etc to tank that number of hits) so that you can win trades with no-poise opponents while still playing hit-and-run versus high poise opponents. Look at weapon pages to see specific poise damage for those weapons.

    With me so far?

Ok, so as far as the weight:poise ratio goes, there's a few things to note. As mentioned, more poise = more weight. But also interesting to know is that heavier armor also has a better poise EFFICIENCY. That means that not only is the poise higher on heavier armor, but also that the poise/weight ratio is higher on heavier armor. The more you "spend", weight-wise, the better value you get. You can see this when sorting by P:W in the wikidot tables - the higher the ratio is, the heavier the armor is.

What this means when choosing armor is that, if you want to hit a specific number, you're usually better off picking 1-2 pieces of heavy, high-poise armor, and then choosing low-weight, zero-poise armor for the rest. If you pick mid-weight, mid-poise armor for every piece, you'll end up with less poise and more weight overall.

One other important note is that you get some base poise from endurance and adaptability. This works like dark bonus, where it's determined by the lower of the two attributes. Don't forget to include this number in your calculations, if you're aiming for a specific breakpoint.

    Effect

Some armor (very few overall) come with special bonuses. Usually these are simple stat bonuses, but some armor (especially helms) come with other fancy additions like faster casting, reduced fall damage, or increased carrying capacity. This bonuses are definitely worth considering, especially for anyone using spells. However I would point to the peasant set as being great for non-casters, as the int decrease will be meaningless whereas +2 ADP can be a big deal.

Since these vary from piece to piece, there's not much to say about them as a group. Decide how valuable the effect is for your build when considering whether it's worth it. To identify special-effect items in the wikidot tables, look for the "E" on the far left side of the table.

    Conclusion

Alright, now that we've gone though all the statistics for armor and how to consider them, you should be all set to figure out which pieces are best for you, and combine them together in the most effective way for your build. A few general tips:

For pvp, the most important consideration is weight and poise. Resistances usually won't be a huge deal since you should be looking to roll through spells, not tank them. As mentioned earlier, if you want a mid-poise build, I recommend selecting 1-2 pieces of heavy poise armor and leaving the rest as light, no-poise armor.

For casters, you'll usually be less concerned with poise, and more focused on effects and weight. There are a lot of nice caster helms worth looking at. Resistances will also likely be more important than defense since you're more likely to get hit at a range than up close.

For PvE, I highly recommend the Sanctum Knight boots. Getting muffle on boots is a nice effect, and they have reduced fall damage as well.

Llewelyn armor is a bit of an anomaly in the poise/weight ratio. It has heavy-armor efficiency at a medium weight, plus good resistances and defense. Also it's very pretty (much like John Snewww). If you're looking for balanced build, it's a great choice.

The aforementioned black witch set has really high resistances and is always worth taking a look at. The chaos set also has very good resistances. An upgraded Black Witch Robe and Chaos Boots can go a long way to providing near-immunity to certain elements, which makes a huge difference in some fights (cough darklurker cough).

Thanks for reading! I hope it was useful to you.

Which npc has the best buildup untill you meet them/end their quest?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 11:38 PM PDT

While everyone knows I love Lucatiel, if have to say vendrick. The almighty king, who will be out greatest challenge, the one who will be in our way to our journey, the one who has been talked about since the beginning of the game... And when you do find him it's only a shell of a man that used to be called king once.. And fuck man, his dialogue in his memories,so fucking amazing, the voice actor did a splendid job! Also, the boss theme that plays makes you actually question if fighting him is the right thing to do..

king? I am no king. Im more fit to be a jester

    How about ya'll?

First impressions of NG+ (Part II)

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 12:36 PM PDT

Ok, finally finished my first NG+ run! (*pops champagne*). Impressions of the second half of the game after my comments in a previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/DarkSouls2/comments/j9runp/first_impressions_of_ng/

Overall I definitely found the run much much easier than NG. The extra damage and health of enemies was more than overcompensated by having more powerful weapons at least in the runs through the levels though the bosses are something of another story. I was mostly dying no more than 1-2 times between bonfires and in many (if not most) cases, not dying at all. In fact, doing the Dragon Shrine and Shrine of Amana without dying was impressive considering how hard I found them at first! There were a few tricky bits though as well as some bosses that I struggled more with:

    - Drangelic castle was a breeze EXCEPT the part leading from the Twin Dragonslayer fight to the Looking Glass Knight fight. I don't recall struggling this much against the two manikins that drop on you in the room before the old knights (which leads to the King's Passage), including those old knights! The mace knight in particular is such a pain but the fact that the two knights upstairs aggro at the same time makes it a p.i.t.a.

    - The Looking Glass Knight was slightly tougher. I beat him on my first try on the first run but took me about 5 attempts this time. This was partly on purpose: I LOVED this fight because of the music and atmosphere and I probably sub-consciously wanted to die a few times to relive it. Still my favorite boss fight of Dark Souls 2.

    - In contrast, I found Velstadt to be easier. I really struggled first time around but I found him much more predictable. I stupidly died a few times because of his dark attack basically one-shots you on NG+ but I beat him on like the 4th attempt and it was a no hit.

    - Vendrick was also one I beat on the first attempt the first time but took me about 4-5 attempts now, again, mostly because the extra damage means he can one-shot you with his sword slam. I was playing a bit recklessly to be honest at this point since he was the last boss I hadn't finished.

    - And finally the toughest... Throne Watcher/Defender. I hated this fight first time around and I hate it again. It's so unbalanced and unfair and I cannot imagine beating them solo without Benhart of Jugo acting as fodder. Took another 10+ attempts.

NG+ was also my first attempt at doing the Dark Chasm of Old as I had preciously few human effigies in the first run. Poison arrows make all three sections a breeze, who would think that poison works on phantoms! But this also meant it was my first encounter with Mr Darklurker. I definitely found him hard though quick to learn, my main annoyance was going through the chasm every time to beat him and even doing so in the Shaded Woods portal (by far the easiest) was a bit boring. Melee strategies are not really good and he has a ton of health so I followed the advice and used pyro against him as well as a dark-infused Rebel Greatshield. Great Combustions during his single phase is very effective since he's easy to get behind of, and then use longer range pyros like Flame Swath and orbs after he splits. A well timed Great Combustion when he splits really hurts him as you deal double damage and you can basically leave him with about 1/3 or even 1/4 of his health after that. Overall, I loved that fight (barring the chasm bit), so much more balanced than the Throne Watcher/Defender. Still, took me about 12 attempts though would have been a few less: we simultaneously killed each other on like the 8th/9th attempt which was super frustrating!

I will probably skip the DLCs except for the sunken city because I want to finish Benhart's quest and get the achievement and I didn't summon him for the Looking Glass Knight fight. With this I now have all the achievements except the learn all sorceries/hexes etc. though I should be quite close...

Finished the game and the DLC without one single invasion or summon

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 03:56 PM PDT

I've finished DS1 completely offline (on Switch, and I was always on the move anyways) and with DS2, I wanted to try something different. So, I've played the full game online, I've beaten everything including the 3 DLC. However, I was not invaded one single time in my entire gameplay. I've left summon signs after beating every boss, and I have never been summoned. I've been playing the game on Xbox One.

Is this because the community playing DS2 got significantly smaller on Xbox, or is there something wrong with my settings?

I'm not sure if it changes anything but my character is a pure-melee build, I've never dug through spells and miracles. I am now planning to take a look at these on my DS3 walkthrough.

What weapons are fun to make a build around but also don't suck

    I can’t beat Darklurker

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 02:17 PM PDT

I've finally encountered a boss I can't beat. I finished DS1, I've beat Fume and Alonne and everyone else in this game except the final boss and Darklurker.

But I just can't beat this stupid fucking encounter. I can rush his solo ass and get him to 50% health in like thirty seconds and then I get absolutely destroyed by double lurker every time

Day 3 of attempts. I've gone through 50 effigies and I only have 4 left. I have 100% dark reduction shield, ~350 dark resist from gear. But I just can't do it. I feel completely hopeless. I have only gotten them to low-ish health once.

And the worst part is I don't even enjoy this fight. I didn't mind getting my ass kicked by Fume and O&S for a while because those fights were fun. This one is just stressful and shitty trying to avoid 2 guys throwing spells at you from who knows what direction.

There's no "dance" like with Fume where you finally memorize all his moves and perfectly dodge everything without taking a hit. No, this one is just "hope they don't fucking cast a spell at me at the same time from opposite ends of the arena".

    Sucks man.

Edit: yea. I have the dark resist ring +2 and the best dark resist items in my inventory. It's not enough. I even tried re-speccing to pyro, upgrading my flame to +10 and still it doesn't matter. I can't avoid his attacks after he splits. I've used all 50+ of my effigies now and I'm not going to farm these fucking things just to keep failing at this boss. I'm done with this game. Sorry I've failed you all

I got invaded during my first SL1 attempt

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 04:20 PM PDT

I could've just played offline to be safe. But I wanted to see how the community would react if they invade someone with the name SL1 HELP ME.

So I just got invaded in No-man's Wharf. I wanted to grab the estus shard right before the bonfire but the path was blocked and the message "Dark spirit (trigger warning) F4GGOT Antifa has invaded" popped up. Oh boy.

So I went outside the cave and spotted him in the distance. I did the kneel down gesture while he pulled out a greatbow. I dodged but immediatly did the gesture again. He got curious and came closer.

He could've easily killed me. I was SL1 and the greatbow showed me that he is an experienced pvp player. But then he did the warcry gesture and started to drop items. Effigies, radiant lifegems, mushrooms, and even some lategame weapons (which I can't use because of the level restriction but I was so overwhelmed that I missed the chance to give them back.) When he was done with dropping stuff he did a quick wave gesture and jumped into the water.

I bet he was smart enough to have a backup save with all the gear he gave me but it was nonetheless one of the best moments I had playing this game. F4GGOT Antifa, if you read this thank you and long may the sun shine upon you! \[T]/

    Question about black witch staff

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 12:10 PM PDT

So im curious, lets say I find an enemy that has the exact same resistances across the board (phys/magic/light/fire/dark/etc) wouldnt the bash attack theoretically do the most damage in the game? An un-infused staff on my character has an AR of 1507. By far the highest total AR of any weapon in the game.

Also I thought a dark infused chime of want was the strongest for casting hex miracles, (specifically speaking greater res soul). But I think i read that a dark infused black witch staff is better? Or did i read that wrong?

Its funny i was just looking at all the staves I've accumulated and noticed how the black witch had a fuckin insane 1500 ar. But ive tried using it to attack with a melee hit and it doesnt do all to much damage. So I'm confused on how that works i guess.

    Shulva, Sanctum City

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 03:39 AM PDT

I beat the graverobber boss fight on my first try. I first played ds2 sotfs 8 months ago and beat the base game then started to do the dlc's. I got to the optional boss fight with the 3 guys and rage quit because of the horrible run to the boss. I maybe got to the boss 3 or 4 times but attempted to get there 10+ times. Said screw this and stopped playing it. About a month ago I decided to try again and started a new character, got through the base game, then did the iron crown dlc, then went back to shulva. I beat the main dlc bosses and decided to try the optional area again, and I did it! First try on this character. The thing that made the run much easier was using yearn. I didnt bother picking up any items or exploring the area. Just casted yearn a few times and sprinted for the boss room. Now, all I have to do is get through the last dlc.

Fastest sunlight farm method (online or offline)

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 01:46 AM PDT

Since a few people have recently posted about frustration getting enough sunlight medals for achievements and rewards, thought I'd post my method. AFAIK it's the fastest method, and definitely the fastest that takes zero effort or brainpower.

Setup: get to brightstone cove Tseldora, camp bonfire.

Have as high damage of a spell as you can get. Ideally CSS off a magic staff of wisdom. With this setup I was able to pull this off in NG+, but it's probably overkill in NG.

Strap on all the item find gear you can find. If you want to use coins go ahead.

Execution: Start at the bonfire and move to the wall. You'll be able to lock onto one falconer who's facing away from you.

Nail him with a spell, which ideally kills him in one hit. Two hits will make this slower but it's still ok - he'll dodge the second spell unless you delay it, though, so figure out the timing that works for you.

If he drops an item, run over and grab it. If he doesn't, hit the bonfire and repeat.

If you do go grab an item, you'll probably get ganked by 1-2 other falconers. You can try to kill them or just die, whichever you prefer. Just make sure you get the item first.

Initially you'll get a bunch of random falconer crap, but once he's exhausted (they only drop 1 of each armor piece/weapon) every item dropped should be a sunlight medal.

If you're in the groove you can kill him very quickly over and over, with no risk except for when you actually have to grab the medals. Usually this results in a medal every few minutes. Much faster than even the busiest boss arenas.

    Good hunting!

Crown of the Sunken King DLC confirms what I hold self evident...

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 07:09 AM PDT

I really really really really really really really really really really really really hate any kind of poison level, and the clunking of DS2's combat does not help. Then I have to worry about falling constantly, the whole damn map gets me nervous.

Matter of fact, while DS2 was my first Dark Souls game, I didnt understand the criticism of its combat til I played the other Soulsborne games...DS2 is soooooo much less forgiving.

I do appreciate Sinh taking care of those guys on the bridge for me though, but the archers with the poison arrows can go kick titanite.
