Why exactly is the Last Giants Buttface the picture of this sub for years now? Posted: 30 Sep 2020 11:19 PM PDT That's it. Just wondering who thought that this major character with his absolutely unique design and relevancy to the overall plot made it to bein representative of the Dark Souls 2 Community? DS2 doesn’t get enough credit for its healing mechanics Posted: 01 Oct 2020 06:17 AM PDT I recently replayed all of the Soulsborne games, and decided that DS2 really has the best healing mechanics of all of the games. First of all, the speed of healing is perfect. Trying to heal at the wrong time will only get you killed, as it leaves you vulnerable for a lot longer, and takes a while to proc as well. Playing DS3, the healing just felt... silly. Like, it just looks and feels fucking stupid to be chugging my estus while a boss is actively attacking. It worked in Bloodborne, but Bloodborne also tweaked all of the mechanics to be much more focused on trading hits and playing aggressively, and changing the animation to quickly jabbing a syringe into your leg also made it look less stupid than suddenly pulling out the big ole jug of Sunny D and sipping away while you are actively getting hit in the face. This healing speed also helps PvP — when you invade someone, if you keep the pressure on them, you can keep them from healing. This makes invasions much more intense from both sides, as anybody could be dead at any moment. In DS3, they made the healing so fast and overbalanced the game so much, that it is basically impossible to punish healing, which means that everyone being invaded has 10k+ HP. Then because you can't punish healing, and the host has twice as much, all this means is that as long as you are trading hits, the host wins every time. This is fucking boring — I don't even get worried when I get invaded in DS3, because I know that the invader needs to be twice as good as me to beat me. My skill level in the game is pretty average, so I rarely encounter a player that is twice as good as me. In DS1 or DS2, it really is a crapshoot if I am about to die when I get invaded, whereas in DS3 I win just about every time, and this is 100% due to the speed of healing. This brings us to the next thing that it does beautifully — it bridges the gap between consumable healing items (DeS, Bloodborne) and rechargeable healing (DS1 and 3). I noticed this a bit in DS1, but it was extremely apparent in DS3 how disruptive it was to the gaming loop to need to go back to the bonfire and rest before continuing to explore, just because the little encounters along the way chipped away at my limited healing. This was virtually never a problem in DeS and Bloodborne — you pick up grass and vials along the way, so you can just spend a long time out there exploring. The fact that you had a limited consumable number of them, though, was disruptive when you were trying to beat a boss and using a ton of them. The blood starved beast in Bloodborne was the most brutal example to me — I was trying to figure out how to beat that fucker, but I kept having to stop fighting him to go farm more vials, which felt like a chore, especially since there aren't many good and safe farming options available at that point in the game. This continues to be a problem even in the late game, where some of the bosses take so many attempts to beat that you will blow through your max storage of 600 vials while you try and beat them (that fucker Ludwig did this to me the first time I played the DLC). Demon's Souls had a different problem, where I had so much grass by the end of the game that it was trivial to take damage — as long as you didn't die, you had enough grass to almost die at least 100 times over, which is just silly. Bloodborne came up with a good solution here by only allowing ~20 on your character at a time (you can carry more with runes, but then you miss out on other perks), but the issue of running out still applies. DS marries the best of both worlds here — we have the faster estus, which refills, and we have consumable life gems, which refill your health very slowly. This sidesteps the DS1 and DS3 problem of constantly needed to go back to the bonfire and retread the same ground just to explore a different path, as you can just use the slow healing gems to heal up the nicks and scrapes you get from the mobs. It avoids the Bloodborne and DeS problem of running out, as the estus is the only type of healing you really need (the gems are more a QoL improvement) and it always refills fully after you rest or die. Finally, it prevents the DeS issue of trivializing damage by making the gems heal slowly — if you use them in the heat of battle, and you aren't in control of the fight, it is really easy to take more damage than what was healed by the gem in the time it takes to proc. So yeah, the healing speed and life gems in DS2 make the healing in this game the best in the Soulsborne games, and I don't think it gets enough credit for how well the mechanics work. An ode to Dark Souls 2's aesthetics and visual style Posted: 01 Oct 2020 10:40 AM PDT I am a recent convert to this phenomenal series and I guess I find myself among the (proud!) minority who think that Dark Souls 2 is the best in the trilogy. Don't get me wrong, I think all three are great for different reasons and none of them gets everything right. I also confess that DS2 was the first that I played because I wanted to give the series a chance and it was the cheapest one on Steam. So there's a bit of bias in losing my Souls virginity to this one. However, there is something about DS2 that stuck to me even after playing the other two and it's the game's unique aesthetics and visual style. Allow me to explain: For starters, this is not about the game's graphical quality. DS3 blows the other two (even remastered DS1) out of the water with its amazing lighting and absurdly detailed architecture. My jaw dropped the moment I stepped inside the Cathedral of the Deep or arrived in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. There's just no comparison here. But aside from the detail, DS3's realism means it doesn't allow the imagination to wander too far off from what it intends. DS3, like DS1, feel like a fallen kingdom but one that you can imagine was once thriving. You can picture people living and walking around the Undead Burg or Undead Settlement, taking a Sunday stroll in the Undead Parish, or a winter holiday in Irithyll. You can imagine knights and courtiers mingling on the walls of Lothric Castle, as well as priests and churchgoers in the esplanades of the Cathedral. These kingdoms may now be cursed and filled with hollows and monsters but you get a sense they once didn't. On the other hand, nowhere in DS2 appears fit for human habitation. It is not just an evil, cursed land, it is inhuman as well. What went on in Heide's Tower of Flame or No Man's Wharf? What kind of creatures lived in the clay or mud huts of Brightstone Cove Tsedora? What was being worshiped in the towering pyramids of Shulva? Certainly there were places like this in DS1/DS3: Lost Izalith comes to mind. But in DS2 it's practically the whole game. And it's not just the level design that hints about the inhuman nature of Drangleic. In DS1 you fight Gwyn who is basically a human-sized hollow, as is Gael in DS3 or the even the Soul of Cinder. In DS2, King Vendrick is a towering figure, as is his wife. The throne room in the end is also a primitive stone kiln, certainly not a throne room surrounded by gothic splendor to feed a human's ego. And Drangleic Castle is hidden away, unwelcoming. It feels like it has always been cold and empty. The environment of Dark Souls has always meant to make you feel insignificant. The way you struggle to open chests or pull levels, gives the impression this is a land fit for giants rather than men. But none of the games takes this to the extreme the way that DS2 does. Aside from a handful of exceptions like Frozen Elyum Loyce which is clearly a town, nearly the entirety of DS2 does not feel like a place inhabited by human beings. The other aspect about DS2 is the feeling that you are in a limbo between life and death. The worlds of both DS1 and DS3 ultimately feel real: you might be cursed and hollow but what is happening is happening. But DS2 has a surreal quality to it that is hard to describe. The introduction definitely helps kick start this feeling but the music of Things Betwixt and Majula work wonderfully to convey this. In fact, I dare say Majula is my visually and musically favorite location in all of Dark Souls. It is an oasis of peace that cannot shake off the feeling of impending doom, and the safety it provides makes everything around it all the more foreboding, like the giant waves crashing on the craggy shore. The fact that it is in perpetual sunset - also the limbo between day and night - makes it an uneasy place to be even if you know there are no enemies around (nevermind the piggehs). Anyway, I'm curious if any other DS2 fans agree with this. Thanks for reading! [link] [comments] |
I need help finding out the name of the armor in the promotional material of DS2 Posted: 01 Oct 2020 01:09 PM PDT image here the shoulder design looks cool but I don't know the name, I figured it must exist in-game. I looked at the Dark Souls 2 armor wiki and couldn't find it. edit: Thanks guys! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2020 06:36 AM PDT So yesterday while I was chilling in Majula I suddenly died for no reason. Does anybody know what happened? P.S: If it helps I was offline and I picked up an item before dying. P.P.S: Someone mentioned that I might have gotten a hacked item, could it be that maybe I was banned or something? How can I check if I was banned? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2020 03:05 PM PDT 3 more trophies and I'm done with the trilogy. My biggest gripe with 1 and 2 is the hotboxes are absolutely atrocious, especially the boss's damage hotboxes. Now I will admit, the camera trick with the hotboxes has saved my ass more times than I can count but I've also died to hits that I was well out of range of but the camera didn't see it that way I guess. It is indeed true that the Camera is the hardest boss of Dark Souls. This rant was brought to you by dying to Velstadt because I was hit by the invisible extra 3 feet at the end of his weapon 😔 Side note: what is with the random direction changes when attacking? I don't get why that happens and it's only this game it has been happening in. It's annoying when dealing with the gank enemies that you have to kill as quickly as possible to not be overwhelmed. Posted: 01 Oct 2020 02:37 PM PDT Hello guys, I used to play a lot of DS2's pvp back in the ps3 days. I had a lot of fun and i still think this game have the best pvp in the series, in terms of diversity and fun factor. I picked up the game on ps4 to see that pvp is dead. Besides the arena, there is no activity out in the wild. Where are the fight clubs? Where are the red signs? Am I missing something? Or should i really go back to DS3 if i want some good old fight clubs? [link] [comments] |
Why am I struggling in ds2 sotfs[ps4] Posted: 01 Oct 2020 02:03 PM PDT Hey all no noob to the series but I'm not master. I picked this game up on xbox 360 when it came out and had a good time until I got past the Persuer and got collected by the birds, had a bad time and gave up. Around 2017 picked up bloodborne and loved it then played ds3 to death I still play. So I picked up ds2 sotfs, I'm straight up not having a good time, what am I doing wrong? If anyone has some tips or good first run through builds it would be appreciated. Some more information: I understand the scaling mechanic and weight management. Not super sure on the stat that helps with I frames. I've tried a few different play styles and found the quality-ish one the best. Thanks again in advance. [link] [comments] |
Still getting the "Failed to save game" glitch. Can somebody help me? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 01:52 PM PDT I already made a post talking about this a few days ago, but the community didn't seem very active at the time, so I was unable to get much help. It looks more active now, so I feel it's a good time to try and get help again. I've tried a few solutions that somebody commented on that post. First I tried deleting the .sl2 file in my game files, didn't work. I then tried reinstalling the game, also did not work. I kinda lost hope but then remembered to try and rename the .sl2 file, and it worked... for about 5 minutes. For some context, I can start a game just fine, the problem is that as soon as I enter Majula this glitch happens. After I renamed the file I could actually get to Heide's Tower of Flame, which I believe is the mext area you should go to after Majula, but when getting there the glitch would happen. I searched for a solution on YouTube and was unable to find anything on this specific problem. In conclusion, does anybody know an answer to this problem? If you do, could you perhaps send me a link to a video showing how to solve this problem? Any help is appreciated. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2020 10:00 AM PDT So at the moment I'm attempting to 100% this game. It is the last of the trilogy I have to do. As per the title, I am struggling with Sunlight Medals. I am not playing on scholar and have spent the last 2 hours farming the mounted overseers in Harvest Valley only obtaining 2. If somebody would be willing to help me obtain even a few medals it would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to go farm the falconers in hopes of better luck. Thank you again. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Sep 2020 11:24 PM PDT I really want the black dragon weapons they look really good, but the drop rate (at least for me) seems incredibly low. Are there some armor sets or consumables I should use for grinding this esides gold serpent ring? Also, are they worth the grind for anyone who has used them? Thanks for your help guys [link] [comments] |

Question about DPS per swing (and clearly overthinking it) Posted: 01 Oct 2020 08:50 AM PDT I was up late last night changing my newborns diaper and missing DS2. And I got to thinking... is there a calculation or analysis already done on the best weapons per second per swing? Here's what I mean... and if it makes no sense please blame the sleep deprivation. Big Fat weapon A has 600 AR per swing but swings very slow. Get only X swings per say 3 seconds. Little fast pokey weapon B has 140 AR but you get many swings in same 3 seconds. But in my experience in dark souls, getting off 4-6 swings quickly isn't that easy. Sometimes only 1 or 2 then dodge and re-engage. But just swinging once and taking forever to recover also may not be best. So how do we analyze the weapons in between... Is there an analysis of the best damage weapons based on damage per second BUT taking into consideration the least amount of swings to do it? The balance of speed and power... [link] [comments] |
Can you give me a build idea pls Posted: 01 Oct 2020 06:38 AM PDT I currently wear a medium armor and wield the looking glass knight sword. I have 40Strengh and i think 30dex i am, I guess you could call it a warlock and I am not good at dodging so no light armor. Thanks and I wait for your replies [link] [comments] |
