Beat this fucking stupid ass game and want to die (love it actually)

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 03:47 AM PDT

I beat ds2 a couple of days ago and it feels great. This game is so diverse and content-filled. I beat Sotfs in like two weeks with no summons, brightbugs, glitches, cheat and/or exploits. Everyone should try this game. In comparison to other Fromsoft. games it is so different and genius. I really enjoyed the real open world where you come to Majula and do whatever you want unlike ds3 and bloodborne where the beginning is particularly linear. 10/10 must try for everyone.

fuck Lud and Zallen tho that's not funny

The funniest and mysterious experiences in Dark Souls 2

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 04:34 AM PDT

You know what is crazy, when you lie in the coffin with the 2 Ogres in the starting area and then don't notice anything when you come out because you are wearing a helmet, and then suddenly a hideous woman's voice screams the next time you die. I didn't understand anything in this first. Those special hidden features in DS2 are just brillant haha

Arsenal of the Awful: Lion Greataxe

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 03:36 PM PDT

Man...what is up with Greataxes in Souls games? In DkS1 and DkS3, nearly all greataxes have literally only 1 attack done at slightly varying speeds and in DkS2, the best greataxe moveset weapon isn't even a greataxe, but a giant, dark popsicle pretending to be an UGS. The Lion Greataxe in this regard suffers from something that no other greataxe suffers from: damage output.

To understand greataxes and why big damage is so important, we have to first go over their movesets. Movesets as in plural, because there are 2 variants, each with their own set of different attacks (suck it, DkS3, with your boring ass 1-attack greataxes). There are the "smash" greataxes where the 1-handed moveset is an overhead smash and the 1-handed moveset uses short ranged sweeps (aka the Crypt Blacksword moveset...yes, it uses a greataxe moveset), and then there's the "sweep" greataxes that have a 1-handed sweep attack and 2-handed vertical chop attacks, essentially being inverses of each other.

Unfortunately, the smash greataxes are almost always better than the sweep ones for both PvP and PvE because they allow for unlocked, free-aimed play to punish backstabs, do extremely cheeky feints, and most of them tend to have much longer reach. Why? I don't know, but this is the crux of the Lion Greataxe's downfall.

Because it's a sweep greataxe...with the base damage of an axe. A non-great axe. You're looking at 160 base and 320 at +10, which btw is almost identical to the Bandit Axe but has worse Strength scaling, is nearly tripled the weight, has a big 30 Strength requirement, is a bit slower, and has similar reach. Yes, that's right, this weapon for some reason has abormally ass base damage and without even good scaling to balance it out like the Sun and Fume Swords, and doesn't bring anything unique to greataxes either to compensate.

This as a result makes the Lion Greataxe an axe with the weight of a semi-light greataxe, not really doing well in either categories to the point where even the Ashen Warriors in Brume Tower magically have their double-bladed axes morph into Battle Axes from the sheer embarassment of their weapons resembling the Lion Greataxe.

And they kind of have a point because sweep greataxes are ass in PvP. The attacks are so easy to dodge with no feint or free-aim potential that even noobs and the worst of scrubs can easily avoid this thing, as the literal only 2 attacks worth using only seem to be good because of a wonky, glitchy hitbox. The rolling R1 (1 and 2 handed) has a spin attack that's super random for when it hits as it seems to hit when nowhere close to an opponent, and the 1-handed running R1 is the good old rushing overhead slam for a quick hit. And unfortunately that's kind of all the few positive traits about this weapon, since it does have a sad history.

Because this thing used to have a unique, strong niche...which proceeded to get patched out even though that niche seemed to be the intended way to use these. This mofo used to have straight sword powerstance R1s to fulfill that double-axe wielding berserker dream! ...and so did the Gyrm Greataxe which had around doubled the damage output which insta-killed people with that same powerstance so both of them lost that powerstance despite it only being a problem with 1 of them. RIP axe berserker dreams, ruined by literal sewer dwarves. Now it's some slow-ass UGS powerstance moveset that lacks the reach to make it matter at all (the powerstanced L2s are still fun though, even if it never hits people).

And thanks to the loss of that sexy powerstance, the Lion Greataxe is extremely awkward to use as it seemed to have been designed around it, and lost it. You essentially play this like a slightly slower axe with Greataxe rolling attacks, which isn't particularly bad but it greatly exacerbates all the downsides of an axe without bringing any meaningful benefit. You're only going to deal maybe 40-50 more damage than most light axes but it becomes much harder to hit quicker weapons in matchups so that benefit kind of nullifies itself. The sweeping R1s are genuinely good for covering your sides and back, but that only applies to backstab strafers.

Which makes me wonder; if this thing was supposed to be a transition from axe to greataxe, wtf does it do now to make any use of that? Well, it's one of the lightest greataxes (Crescent Axe doesn't count, that damn halberd posing as a greataxe) so it is technically the easiest to slap on more poise armor with than other greataxes for hit trading. Now, you'll probably never win the hit trade against anyone with the proper build, but you can actually trade a bit more easily since the thing is about 10 units lighter than other greataxes. It also looks dope asf, which only makes me saltier than its unique niche was removed because of its bigger, asshole greataxe brother.

So it essentially gives you more lenient weight for fashion at the cost of a lot of typical greataxe hitting power. However, it having only slightly lower greataxe poise break numbers (45 instead of 50) and the inability to be parried when 2-handed is nice to fight smug opponents...who probably upon starting to lose pull out their obligatory tryhard rapier/katana/red iron and immediately kill you. That may or may not me (it 100% is) based on personal arena experiences. Pro tip: if someone is using a joke weapon and they're not me, they will immediately put that thing away and pull out their tryhard cheese crutches the moment they start losing...against something like the goddamn Lion Greataxe (have some fucking humor, arena tryhards, jeez).

And worse yet is that the "tech" for this weapon kind of invalidates most of its moveset. Spam rolling R1s and hope that the wonky spin slash hitbox hits when it shouldn't. Because unless you're packing a truly absurd amount of poise, hit trading in a worthwhile manner isn't going to happen. At least the Gyrm Greataxe hits disgustingly hard while sharing the same moveset and ass reach as the Lion Greataxe. And what sucks is that the R1s are JUST too slow, being just barely terrible because it does swing pretty fast, but just slow enough to be unusable against straight swords, rapiers, katanas, or any of the pokey things like spears and lances. Or even against axes, for that matter. Trying to invade while wielding this thing sucks because even the noobs know better than to just stand and block a giant axe, even if said giant axe isn't nearly as hard hitting as they probably think. Seriously, this thing loses to poorly upgraded Fire Longsword R1 spam which is a goddamn embarrassment for me to say because obvious i learned this by experience.

Yeah, "slices with fine smoothness" my ass: this thing is a dull greataxe using its weight to hurt people about the same as a regular axe. Quite a shame too because what you're also seeing is the BUFFED numbers; yeah, that's right, this thing used to have the same base damage as the battle axe and even with a 20 base damage increase still sucks because said base was already way too goddamn low to be fixed by just +20 base damage with the powerstance loss. Fromsoft, give this poor weapon back its rightful powerstance, if you one day remake DkS2 (and add in the prototype Gutter, dammit! The current one sucks so bad in comparison!).

Maybe the Lion Warriors don't like to be seen because of how embarrassing it is to wield this weapon as their species' signature weapon. I'd be pretty damn embarrassed too if the weapon most closely associated with my country is a dysfunctional joke.

But what about a weapon that's straight up called a joke in its own description? A weapon that shits on itself, but seems to have something very, very interesting going on with it that most, if not all of you, likely overlooked. Next time, i'm trying out the Thief Dagger, the weapon that is literally a bent piece of metal strapped to twigs and sticks (seriously, look at it close up and its some caveman tech shit). But seeing its stats has given me an absolutely terrible idea that i am aching to try for the memes.

It's crazy how the main game has 32 bosses yet you can finish it defeating only 8 of them

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 05:54 AM PDT

And all of that without using a single glitch or exploit.

Not only that, you can finish it completing only 6 Areas (not counting things betwixt and majula) with the first boss being twin dragonriders in drangleic castle. There is so many optional bosses and areas in the game it's crazy..

just 1 invasion in Dark Souls III has made me miss II's PvP already

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 06:03 AM PDT

    >join Watchdogs

    >invade dude getting mashed around by red, he has a white summon

    >chase the host constantly, backpedal rolls out of my zweihander every time, even in water, or blocks while losing barely any stamina

    >switch to halberd, does the same still

    >other two phantoms eventually die

    >chase him to the ladder to Farron Keep

    >he sits on ladder, just mashes R1 when I get down to try to knock him off

    >start peppering him with bow, moves down out of reach

    >purplebro invades, he ends up trying to fight me, falls off the ledge

    >eventually get the host down to no Estus, but so am I

    >plunge attack him, he gets up before me and mashes R1 with a club until I die to desync

I would've won in the first 30 seconds if this was II's PvP. The fact that I either have to do this 30 more times at minimum or spend hours farming enemies with shite droprates makes me utterly despair.

Anybody who dickrides the 'A-Team' really needs to compare the PvP of these games side by side.

    First playthrough with friends

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:17 PM PDT

Hey! So I'm playing Dark Souls 2 for the first time. I'm gonna be playing it through with a couple friends who have played it quite a bit. Myself and my friends have played through Dark Souls Remastered together, and recently finished Dark Souls 3 together. I usually prefer a medium-mobility, cleric playstyle. (specifically I am a supportive type of player and what cleric offers fits that well when playing with friends) Anyways, I'm looking for suggestions on weapons to aim for and general builds to try out. Otherwise I may just grab whatever random weapon I can find that feels good haha. I'm generally trying to avoid major spoilers, but I don't mind much. I've pretty much learned all the lore of the entire Dark Souls series and that spoiled a lot anyways. Any suggestions welcome!! Thanks!!

    Need parry advice

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 09:02 AM PDT

I'm like probably around mid game now and I've been playing with the shield the whole time. I haven't really practiced parrying at all.

I'm using the Heide knight sword. What secondary weapon would you guys recommend me for parrying?

Just beat Fume Knight on my second try

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 07:01 AM PDT

After seeing him top basically every list I've seen of "hardest DS2 bosses" I was prepping myself for 20+ attempts, but instead first try I got him down to 10% health before getting one shot by his charged swing (my bad, went in hollow with ~75% health).

Second time, just popped an effigy and charcoal pine resin and went to town. He definitely hits hard, but wasn't too fast. Staying left and rolling I found him pretty easy to dodge. I definitely struggled way more with red smelter (mostly due to the godforsaken run back).

I'm pretty gud, but not THAT gud, so what gives? Just good rng? How did I pull this off? Overlevelled (sl 125)? Is the rapier/flynn's/old leo just THAT op?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 10:16 PM PDT

I must have died about 35 times or so. But yesterday i even had a mental conversation with him. ' aren't you getting tired of this? I will just keep coming back and back and back! You are getting weaker every time!' Then i got him. Felt rewarding. Then i relaxed and that asshole guard atthe door came in and 2 shotted me, lol.

Oh well. Increased difficulty does increase the feeling of achievement. Good stuff

    Lingering Dragoncrest Ring?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 02:52 PM PDT

So I wanted to make a big, buff heavy faith build for PVE, my CoC run to be exact. You know, Sacred Oath, Sunlight Blade and smack some bosses. Here's my question:

If I applied the buffs while wearing the Lingering Dragoncrest Ring and then switched to another ring like Flynn's would I keep the extra buff duration or would the effect on the miracles disappear instantly?

Can you make Sinh the third boss you face?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 08:48 PM PDT

So I'm thinking about how I'll spice up my NG+ (or even an NG altogether now that I know to dump points into ADP as soon as I pick bandit, a choice I cannot be dissuaded from), and I'm wondering if there are any flaws with this plan:

1: Grind for/carry over the Silver Cat Ring.
2: Jump down enough to reach the Gutter, skipping the Grave of Saints.
3: Proceed through Gutter and Black Gulch.
4: Kill the giants in Black Gulch for the Forgotten Key.
5: Zip back to Majula to get the Dragon Talon.
6: Kill boss one: the Rotten.
7: Use the fountain to enter Shulva.
    8: Proceed through Shulva.
    9: Kill boss two: Elana.
    10: Kill boss three: Sinh.

    Can't connect to friend

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 10:41 AM PDT

    Hi.

My colleague and I have been facing the problem of not being able to invite you to the worlds since yesterday. We've even created special new characters to see what's wrong, but it doesn't work on new characters either.

On the old characters we had 3 million souls together and we could not see each other, we also tried with an engraved ring, but also without no effects..

On the new characters, too, we had a similar range of souls, and again it's alone, we don't see our characters on earth. Other players like that - their no. (a colleague sees mine and I see his)

We changed the locale from restricted to allowed and also to no availy.. We hope you will have some other idea how to fix it.

What's the best class to choose in vanilla dark souls 2 offline?

The PS5 exclusive is one thing, how about DS2 REMAKE?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:52 PM PDT

I have to be honest with you guys, you all love Dark Souls 2 here and I don't. Discussions on the subject are a separate thing and pointless for this trhead, but since we get Demons Souls remastered that actually looks super impressive visually (seriously, first game in months that I saw and said to myself "wow, these graphics own everything"). This got me thinking though - what if they remade Dark Souls 2 at some point?

As in actually making the graphics look more like the early trailers? Getting rid of the only-eight-way movement? Better enemy placement? Actually redesigning the bosses? Maybe dumping the life-gem mechanics? Making the world interconnected in some way, so each level doesn't feel like a corridor?

I know, I'm one of those guys who doesn't like DS2, but honestly it's just because I feel the game could have been so much better and I suspect Bamco just said "make this quick and just make it hard, they gonna buy it just for that". To me it never played as well as the first one and I have been holding off from buying 3 because of it, which turned out to be huge mistake. And no, DS2 is not too hard, just to me it feel like a sequel designed by committee with a misunderstood "gamers like super hard games" theme, rather than a proper follow up, which I think Bloodborne was more so. Like seriously, I think someone in a board meeting said "we need an additional boss fight here any ideas? No? Ok just throw in a bunch of rats, make the numbers high so it's hard, them gamers love their ass kicked".

PS I know that I'm not even in the minority here and you all love the game, so more power to you. All I wanted to say, while the Demons Souls Remake makes my hyped, I'd rather they did DS2, just to get rid of the 'black sheep' stigma.

    What to level up?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 05:16 AM PDT

Currently around level 200 and about to go into NG+ for platinum. I'm unsure what to level up now, I'm at 50 in vigor, endurance, strength, and dex, and 10 vitality (to stay at 60 equip load with Third Dragon Ring). ADP is at 32 for 105 agility. I'm unsure what to level up now. Should I bring ADP up enough to give me 110 agility? Or should I go for faith and get sunlight blade or sacred oath?

I defeated Fume Knight for the first time before getting the fourth Old Soul

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 07:04 PM PDT

And oh my god this boss fight is amazing, i can only compare it with something like Artorias or Champion Gundyr, it is incredibly fun, i never got angry nor stressed even when the dude killed me while he was one hit away from death. It's challenging but fair, it forces you to learn the perfect timing for all his attacks and even teaches you to not rush because he can punish you with and unexpected back attack just like Gundyr Kicks! I think this is one of my favorite bosses in the whole series, the flow, the combat, the attacks, the arena, i really like it, the whole game should be like this! And i guess the bonfire being in front of him also helped...
