Exploring Drangleic - Part 12: Dark Chasm of Old, Memories of the Ancients, and Throne of Want

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 07:08 AM PDT

The day has come at last to finish up the areas for the main game. As mentioned in the last post, it'll probably be a little while until I get to and finish talking about the DLC areas.

    Dark Chasm of Old

We need to give Grandahl a human effigy in order to open each of the 3 portals, likely due to the connection between humanity and the Dark. Most of the enemies in here are dark spirits like the ones summoned through Aldia's mirrors. This may be due to the mirrors summoning them from this place. It's also possible that they are members of the Pilgrims of Dark who perished within the Chasm. The other enemies we encounter are these big ghost guys who are either sorcerers or clerics. I don't know what their deal is.

Our goal is to light up these giant bonfires and eliminate all of the enemies within each of the 3 Chasm areas. After completing the first one, Grandahl tells us that the Chasm came from a great void that became fragments, after which each of the fragments grew and became the Chasm. It sounds like this place is the remnants of Manus.

After clearing all of the Chasms, you're able to fight the boss. In the Chasm we get to under Drangleic Castle, you can actually see the boss through a hole in the wall before jumping down the pit.

Darklurker is a very strange entity. It's angelic, which was essentially a non-existent sight prior to Dark Souls 3, so its design stands out a lot in comparison to other bosses. It's got 4 arms, although 2 of them always remain crossed. It uses it's other 2 arms for summoning spells.

It's first attack is basically a lightsaber it conjures using one hand. The next is a ranged version of this attack, pointing at you and firing off a soul arrow. It also has an AOE attack like half of the other bosses in this game. Another move it does is creating 2 portals and then shooting some kind of exploding dark orb through it. The last is 3 fireballs that track you a little bit.

At about half health, Darklurker splits into 2. However, the other Darklurker is not an illusion; they both share the health bar. This is somewhat similar in my mind to how Humanity is able to be split up infinitely.

Surprisingly, the Darklurker's soul is bright. It's specifically described as something that "lurks" in the Dark Chasm, not something from it. There is a theory that Darklurker is Amana, which I will link here for those who want to look into it. I personally find it pretty convincing.

Grandahl says that there is Dark within all of us, and that Dark is the mother of all. This just once again reinforces how humanity and their souls originate from the Dark Soul itself. He then says that we need the Abyss more than ever, before giving us the hex Climax and the Xanthous set.

    Memories of the Ancients

The first memory of the withered we'll be stepping into is one which is easily missed. Heading back to Tseldora, we go into Freja's boss room to find that a giant purple crystal has formed under the mouth of the petrified Ancient Dragon.

    Dragon Memories

We enter the most direct connection to Dark Souls in the entire game; we literally travel to the intro sequence from the first game. Everything is grey, destroyed Archtrees can be seen all around, and there's a dead dragon we can interact with to get the Ancient Dragon Soul, something sorely missing from the Ancient Dragon in the Dragon Shrine.

The most bizarre thing is that the soul describes itself as belonging to that fake dragon, which was created by those who peered into the essence of the soul, Vendrick and Aldia. So, do the dragons have some kind of shared consciousness? But that dragon was created out of Giants, it literally has a Giant soul. What's going on here? It makes my head hurt to think about.

A neat detail about the sword we get from its soul describes the Age of Ancients from the Dark Souls intro, which is pretty cool.

Next, we head back to the Forest of Fallen giants in order to check out the memories in those Giant trees.

    Memory of Vammar

We appear in a tunnel and exit to find an injured man in Drangleic armor. This is the one and only Captain Drummond we heard about a long time ago from the set's description. He tells us that this battle is not for us. The fort was placed in his hands by Vendrick, but his men likely don't have the will left to resist if we encounter them. Soon, the Giants will descend upon the fort in pursuit of revenge for Vendrick's misguided barbarism. He says that the King has changed, and he does not know why. He then explains that Vendrick went to the Giants' land to pillage it, and after returning from there, the golems materialized. Drummond tells us that he is the 3rd generation of his family to face the Giants here, just reinforcing how long this war lasted for, and notes that the Giants seem to be incapable of forgiving Vendrick for his misdeeds, suggesting that his actions were especially heinous. Before leaving, Drummond tells us that the Giants have their own king, who is a towering monster that Drummond is determined to defeat.

As we traverse through the memory, we can see there are several varieties of Giants. Magic casters, bare-fist fighters, and those big dual-wielders we encountered down in Black Gulch. The Giants are fighting soldiers and Ironclads, who are notably much shinier than they are in the present Forest of Fallen Giants.

We find a fallen Giant within many weapons embedded in him. Interacting with him gives us a Giant Soul and ends the memory.

Atop the ramparts where we fought the Pursuer, there is another tree. However, Benhart is also here. He tells us that his sword was created by moonlight and no one has ever unlocked its true power.

    Memory of Orro

Benhart is here too somehow. I have no idea why he's in this memory, as it's never implied he was around during the war and he certainly doesn't seem that old.

There's a Pharros room we find the Steel set in it, and other than that there's not much else of note. We get the Giant Soul and leave the memory.

The last tree is found behind the King's Gate.

    Memory of Jeigh

There is really only one thing in this memory: the boss fight. We have 2 NPC summons available; Benhart and Drummond. Bringing Drummond along and having him survive the fight will result in him rewarding you with the Drangleic Helm, the final part of the Drangleic Set.

Up atop the ramparts of the fort, in the same place we battled the Pursuer, we engage in combat with the Giant Lord, who is very obviously the Last Giant. They're essentially the same model, but the Giant Lord has clothes, a crown and a huge sword. He's also just as easy as the Last Giant.

Felling him here suggests that we are the unknown warrior who defeated the Giant Lord in the Soldier's Key description, which as very weird implications on how the memories work. Time is convoluted, I guess.

His Wondrous soul tells us that the Giants conquered Drangleic as revenge for Vendrick kidnapping Giants when he originally pillaged their homeland. We were already aware of the King taking Giants from the mountain of dead ones in Aldia's Keep, but there are further implications about everything he did with them.

The Giant's Kinship is this purple fleshy looking thing that grants us access to the Throne beneath the castle.

Each king has his rightful throne. And when he sits upon it, he sees what he chooses to see. Or perhaps, it is the throne, which shows the king only what he wants. The flames roar, but will soon begin to fade, and only a worthy heir might burnish their light. What is it, truly, a claimant of the throne could desire?

This is essentially explaining to us the power that comes from ascending the true throne; the power to extend the Age of Fire or bring about the Age of Dark. Vendrick, as the almost-monarch, never made this choice, and based on his and Aldia's attempts at defying fate, likely did so as part of his effort towards rejecting duality and finding a new path for the world.

However, before we head on over to the Throne, there's one last thing to deal with.

Vendrick and the Memory of the King

Upon entering the memory from Vendrick's armor, we encounter an aged and crestfallen King Vendrick. Calling us the "seeker of fire, coveter of the throne", he tells us that as the fire rises, so to does it fade, such is the way of things. He then tells us to take the throne to link the fire, seek the "ancient crowns", and have our wishes granted. This is the first reference by any character in the game to "ancient crowns", and considering Vendrick mentions them adjacent to the throne and the linking of the fire, they are presumably very important. As we exit the chamber and the memory ends, we can actually see Velstadt standing guard at the end of the room.

All the Giant souls we have collected have been for this moment, as they decrease Vendrick's defense when we attack him, the fury of the Giants still directed towards the King even long after both of their demises. The Hollowed King may be nothing more than a husk, but he still hits like a truck. Upon felling him, we are not given his soul.

By killing the King, the locked door in the Shrine of Amana may now be opened. When in human form, the door is unlocked. Inside this flooded, overgrown chamber, is a single, sad little wooden throne, upon which rests the Soul of the King. This Wondrous soul beckoned the Dark, which overwhelmed the King, who proved to be a lacking vessel for the true throne, despite being the one intended to link the fire. I think Vendrick was a lacking vessel because of any flaws in his strength or power, but simply because he could not bring himself to link the flames when those before him could.

In a chest down a tunnel, we find the King's Crown and his armor set.

What makes a king? Some call it birthright, while others call it destiny. Perhaps it is not important, so long as the king's name serves to unite his people. As we have seen throughout the game, Vendrick truly possessed these qualities, capable of founding Drangleic and rallying his people against the Giants. And yet, still he could not resist the power of the curse.

Also, it should be of note that the Vendrick we speak to in the Memory of the King is already without his soul, obviously having left it behind in the shrine after fleeing through the King's Passage. It's likely that him leaving his soul here was the tipping point of him succumbing to his Hollowing.

The descriptions of Vendrick's soul items tells us that a fragment of Dark was obsessed with his soul, and wanted to make the Giants' strength its own. He himself only knows if the painting of the Queen (y'know, the one that curses you) is a resentful mockery or a fond exaltation. I wonder why such a thing would be considered about the Queen?

When we return to Vendrick after obtaining his soul, he asks us what we see in the flames. He then explains more about the crowns he mentioned, saying that they contain the strength of old lords. After that, he monologues about how he is no king, and that he is more fit to be a jester, as he was unaware of his own blindness. Poor Vendrick. The guy really brings himself down over his own failings.

Vendrick then leans into some of his brother's ideas, talking about how men are props on the stage of life, but casting aside the act will only lead to greater hardship. He asks us if we are a fool like the others, and remarks that he fails to see our motivations, although he sees very little these days anyway. Seems the old man can still joke a little bit, even under these circumstances.

Anyway, time to do what Vendrick could not.

    Throne of Want

The Emerald Herald awaits us behind the King's Gate. Somehow. She removes her hood and tells us that her journey is complete. Then she tells us her true name; Shanalotte. Her name was given to her by the Ancient Dragon. She was created by those who would defy fate, Vendrick and Aldia, in an effort to break the cycle, but they failed. If I had to guess, I'd assume she was the next attempt in the project after the Ancient Dragon. She then tells us that Nashandra will come after us, as she covets the Great Flame and the Great Soul.

Before I get into that, I should probably describe the Throne of Want. It's an underground chamber surrounded by darkness, with a single natural-looking pathway leading to a place that looks an awful lot like a Kiln. So this is the Kiln of the First Flame, which means that Drangleic is indeed in the same place as Lordran, so the Undead Crypt is likely what used to be the Catacombs in DS1. It's also likely why Vendrick built his castle here.

Now, about Nashandra. Considering she provoked the war with the Giants, she is most certainly the shard of Dark that desired their strength. And Vendrick likely ran away because he knew he was essential to Nashandra's plan for doing that. We should also consider what he put in place to stop her from achieving her goals. Hiding away the key to the King's Passage, the Mirror Knight, the Shrine of Amana, the Demon of Song, the Undead Crypt, Velstadt, keeping the King's Ring behind all of that, and then having to go through Aldia's Keep, the Guardian Dragon, the Dragon Aerie, the Dragon Shrine, communing with the Ancient Dragon, and then having to travel into the memories to get the Giants Kinship to ascend the throne, and then even after all that having to face the Throne Watcher and Throne Defender as the final line of defense. The steps Vendrick went through to protect the throne and his soul from Nashandra were unbelievable in hindsight. And yet, all those defensive measures were removed by us, meaning now there is nothing standing between Nashandra and the throne. Except us, of course.

Nashandra has revealed her true form as this weird spooky skeleton monster with a huge scythe. She tells us that we have proven our self to her and tells us to "be one with the Dark."

She's really easy. It's safe to assume the Throne Watcher and Throne Defender were placed as the last line of defense because Vendrick figured if the time came, they could defeat her. He was probably right.

Her soul tells us indirectly that she is one of several fragments of Manus, much like the Dark Chasm, and that each of these fragments sought out future monarchs. This is presumably because in the absence of an heir, the Age of Dark will arrive, so they wanted to eliminate those who would threaten their coming age. Nashandra herself was apparently the smallest of these fragments, resulting in her being the first to take human shape.

Aldia's voice rings out within the chamber. He tells us that many monarchs have come and gone over the ages, but none of them stood here, as we do now. He asks us to give an answer to our choice, before manifesting to do battle with us. One final challenge to see if we are truly worthy of the Throne.

Aldia's title is Scholar of the First Sin, hence the name of the game. So what exactly is the First Sin? I'm pretty sure most people agree this is Gwyn's linking of the Fire, which screwed up the whole nature of the world and put us in the mess we are in now. As someone dedicated to breaking the cycle created by the First Sin, he likely became the scholar of it to teach people of the messed up nature of the world so that they may try to change it, just as we are.

He's arguably even easier to beat than Nashandra.

He tells us that he lost everything, but remained here, patiently awaiting one such as us. The Throne will certainly accept us, but what do we really want? Light, dark, or something else entirely?

We are given the option to ascend the throne or leave. Upon choosing the former, the golems make a path for you to take the throne as Shanalotte narratives over the scene, explaining that regardless of what we choose, the cycle will simply continue, and all of this will happen again. We choose the latter.

Rejecting the cycle, Aldia tells us that there is no set path beyond light and dark. We have no idea what lies beyond, yet we seek it insatiably. Such is our fate, he remarks, as the flames outside the Throne all go out.

    So what now?

Well, as Aldia mentioned earlier, many monarchs have come and gone. One drowned in poison, another succumbed to flame. Yet another still slumbers in a realm of ice. And if they are monarchs, then surely they must too possess crowns, crowns containing the strength of lords. And with them, perhaps our wishes will be granted.

Thanks for everyone who has kept up with this series since I started it a couple months ago, and sorry about the long breaks in between these later posts. See you next time when we will delve into the Crown of the Sunken King DLC.

Anyone who's run into Hitler, what was the corrupting action?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 08:09 AM PDT

I'm guessing it's force equipping invalid items. There's already a public fix for saves after the fact, making one for active prevention wouldn't be too hard.

Unless it's just people picking them up manually, which isn't the vibe I'm getting from posts.

Edit: other thread suggests it's a corrupting crash and not a force equip.

Edit 2: he sets all stats to one. Might be easier to manage than I expected

Edit 3: a link to his profile would be incredibly helpful, dms so there's no chance of being taken down for witch hunting. Link would help identify any alts, and confirm who we think it is

Arsenal of the Awful: The Whip

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 11:49 AM PDT

The Whip...not the Notched one, or the Bloodied one, or the Spotted one, or the Old one...but just the plain old whip. Oh boy was this a mess in so many ways. For those unaware, whips have a strange bit of history in DkS2 because their powerstance used to be hilariously good albeit the only good thing about them (with quite a lot of dual Spotted Whip abuse), but that got nerfed to shit and thus the only functional niche went with it, except for the Spotted Whip because just 1 dual hit is enough for the poison so Fromsoft basically fixed nothing whatsoever.

The normal Whip is kind of a symbol of mediocrity because it does literally nothing over the other whips aside from have good Dex scaling...but the Bloodied Whip does significantly more base damage with Strength scaling combined with decent Dex scaling to make the normal whip completely redundant because all whips share the exact same fucking moves.

Whips in DkS2 have no nice outside of powerstance because they're weirdly slow as hell because the animation to coil the whip back for a followup hit is lengthy to the point where ultra-great heavy weapon have comparable swing speeds. In fact, 1-handed whips attack SO slow that they're the only weapon class in the entire goddamn game that can't 2-hit stun anyone, while having mediocre to bad damage.

Powerstancing whips was thus done because that was the only way to get more than 1 hit at a time on anyone, but thankfully the powerstance does still 2-hit players at a minimum albeit rarely more than that (hence why the Spotted Whip problem wasn't fixed at all). Fun fact: in the pre-scholar days i had a dual Notched Whip build that managed to rank up in the bloodbro arena. It was also the only time i ever achieved obtaining the Curved Twinblade which i currently want to try out but the only build i have that would make any use of it is Agaped at 750k SM so that's never going to happen since he as a joke Bleed build can't fight NG PvE for shit and certainly can't fight up to NG+2 in that sorry state.

Which then goes to the problem with the standard whip: it has a gimmicky but useful powerstanced move but no tech. The rolling and running R1s are pretty good as the rolling R1 is a quick jab (the only fast move) while the running R1 is a 360 spin sweep with an inconsistent hitbox. But the one move of the whip that's useful is the powerstanced L2, which is a wide huge-sweep that covers a huge area in front of you...and pierces walls somehow.

This ONE move allows for easy punishing of corner healers in the arena (ffs how tryhard can some people be?) and PvE scrubs hiding behind a corner thinking that they're being smart against someone with weapons that ignore physics. Unfortunately, however, the Whip can't capitalize on that situation 9/10 times it happens because it simply doesn't do anything aside from a lightly damaging slap hit.

No big poison punish like the Spotted Whip, no Bleed punish like Notched Whips, no big damage evil maniac laugh punish like the Old Whip (which i think is made out of candy canes from how fragile it is), and no decent damage punish like the Bloodied Whip. It's a slap...because the Whip can't combo and is slow, so even RoB+Flynn doesn't save it, and those can turn daggers into frontal assault weaponry.

And this goes into the problem with the Whip; it's too slow to be aggressive, you can only get more than a single hit at a time via a powerstance, and its one gimmick is shared with all other whips and is weaker than all other whips. It's also not even a good infusion option because the Bloodied Whip's much higher base damage means much more infused element damage so the Whip has literally no niche that it can even attempt to do. Well, maybe one, but its edgier bloody cousin does that better.

Because whips do have good range that's very hard to predict or discern since the whip coils itself to hide its full length, so one can in fact play passively with a Rob+Flynn, powerstanced Whip setup to just slap the enemy for decent damage with its good reach. A tactic that...rarely works and is completely shut down by a shield if not dodged outright. The 2nd hit of the powerstanced L1 has a good shot at landing, but the poise damage is so low that most of the time it won't stagger.

Which makes the Whip...honestly a really boring weapon. You have to play passively if you ever want to land more than a single hit at a time, it's the same moveset as any other whip but without any cool side-effects, isn't a crazy joke with a punch like the Old Whip, and is very monotonous on how its used. Just feint some R1s and do rolling R1s when you evade, then just back off and wait for a change to powerstance slap. It's not "that" bad if used this way, but using literally any other whips adds SOMETHING to spice things up. The over-reliance on RoB+Flynn also make it so that this weapon is kind of fucked into a one-trick-pony, no-versatility setup that's fueled exclusively by novelty factor. Still, it is amusing to slap someone from behind a corner because whips have transcended the physical plane.

Oh and one more very amusing thing: if a Basilisk does its kung fu spin kick spam to knock you down while you have a whip mid-swing, the whip will stay uncurled and its length floating in a really weird display. Looks cool as hell when it happens to Notched Whips and silly with all other whips (Cthulu cosplays incoming).

Well, that's about it. The Whip is a bog-standard, uninteresting, slash tool that doesn't have any notable tech. Next up however is something that has me quite interested if a certain quality it has isn't being lied about in the wiki: the Mail Breaker. This one sounds like it has a lot of potential, if not just for memes.

    DS2 SotFS competed!

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 04:48 AM PDT

Just finished the game, defeated Throne Watcher and Defender, then Nashandra followed by Aldia. What an incredible game! I think I can still find Dark Diver Grandahl, let's see.

Got to say, Vendrick hits like a truck, but with patience you can finish it. Nashandra and Aldia were a piece of cake. Nashandra had such low health, I finished her pretty fast, and Aldia you just swing 4 times when he appears, and then dodge. Maybe my FTH/STR build is a bit overpowered.

Was hoping for the toughest bosses in the ending, but it was still good fights.

Hey guys! I've been playing a lot of DS2 lately cuz I recently got the collectors edition. However I've only seen 1 summon sign for another player. Could it be the version of the game I'm playing? Either way I'm seeking someone to help me on the Ancient Dragon and maybe to run some other dungeons. Aava appreciation thread

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 12:44 PM PDT

A bit of a random story I have. I've been doing co-op in Lost Bastille on my SL65 209k SM blue sentinel character, and I wanted to try out Durgo's hat for fashion. Durgo's hat is only accessible after defeating Aava, which initially made me groan as it'd be my second time fighting Aava and DLC at low SL can be a bit wonky. Nevertheless, I forged on through Eleum Loyce with my +6 shortsword, abusing stone ring to stunlock everything to death. I arrived at the priestess's eye without any deaths, so far so good. Then came the time to fight Aava.

Having defeated Aava once already, I knew its moveset, so I wasn't really stressed out about it. That made me realise how fun of a fight Aava actually is! It really does feel like playtime with my own cat, only with the cat scaled up a bit. The way Aava will just jump back and pounce you feels so playful. With a bit of good positioning the delayed swipes felt very satisfying to roll through. In the end I beat it using only three of my estus flasks (I have 12 +5 estus from going through the entire game for other fashion items). I even have a fancy screenshot of Aava and I staring each other down.

    Different builds (or lack thereof)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 04:33 AM PDT

Hello! I've played all the souls games and I like them all, for different reasons. But I hear a lot of people takling about different builds they make, and I never start a new character to make a build, I basically just have one savefile where I've played through the game multiple times and just pretty much level up all my stats and I switch between the weapens and spells etc. (I'm a completionist and I like having just one character where I have all the items and stuff) I was wondering if anyone does the same? I haven't been able to find other people talking about this specifically.

( I chose to post in r/DarkSouls2 because it's the game I've played the most)

I can’t stance swap 2H Murakumo into 1H Murakumo. I’ve watched several videos and tried a lot. I play on PS4 SOTFS. Did it get patched?

From the videos I've seen for PS4 you press triangle + r1 + triangle in very rapid succession. Or y + rb + y on Xbox. I'm holding my Murakumo two handed and doing those button commands super fast but my character only does 1 attack. I feel like I'm doing it so fast it should be working. Any tips or anything?

Any love for the Magic Mace

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 02:25 PM PDT

Not seen much about it but it's been my go to weapon for most of the game (since iron keep, now just at the throne room). I've not found anything better really. Normal damage is good, I think it does the same again in Magic damage which seems to be effective against bosses.

Only down side is it has the range of swinging a pencil so you do have to get up close and personal. And in boss fight some times it misses due to its short range.

But apart from that it's a good weapon but I've not seen any posts about it or much online.

I've found a few good swords but they are slower the base damage is comparable with the mace but you lose all that lovely lovely magic damage.

    What is the flashiest weapon?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 02:19 PM PDT

I want to use something that's equally flashy as, say, Priscilla's dagger, in terms of the moveset. I'm not that familiar with the weapons in this game, though, what would you recommend? Preferably something either dex or quality, I'm not in the mood for a strength build at the moment.

    A quick question.

When I go to NG+, do i keep the pieces of Soul of Nadalia? I'm having trouble beating Sir Alonne to get the last wedge so I want to just pick up 6 more in NG+ to get the pyromancy.

Around 7 million soul memory at iron keep, and red arena. Invaded me with red eye which means he was either equal or lower sm tier. Low quality shitter, he lost to infinite iframes and teleport script after breaking my stuff

After hours of farming, I got all 50 Loyce souls (and 1 extra), in NG, without being summoned. Praise the Sun!

I distinctly remember, a few playthroughs ago, I was interested in getting the armor of the ivory king. I remember looking up how often the Loyce souls dropped, and distinctly remember an old comment on an old post saying how hard it was to do it in one game cycle, due to the fact that the drops diminish over time (can confirm they do), and so, I wanted to share the fact that I did it!

I know lightning is nerfed in scholar (ps4) but are all lightning miracles nerfed in damage post patch?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 01:24 PM PDT

I'm playing Scholar for the first time on PS4 and I've heard about these nerfs. I can tell lightning spear is really meh, but is great lightning and sunlight spear nerfed in damage? Like I was gonna max my faith at 50 but is that even worth it?

Specially skinned weapons from Majula chest still available in any way?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 07:11 AM PDT

I remember years ago Fromsoft periodically put some special weapons such as the blue murakumo into the unique chest in the Majula mansion basement. Is there any way to access these items on the latest version of SOTFS?

How come his summon sign is still visible in some(might be all?) places even after "completing" the location? Or does that mean the location is technically not finished yet?

Recently came back to this game and I’m pretty lost

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 08:36 AM PDT

Bought this game a while ago and played up until iron keep, it really dint click with me so I took a break. I am currently in iron keep and I believe I am severely undereleveled for the area. I know there are different paths you can take from the starting area but I have no idea where to go. Any direction whatsoever would be great
