    Creepy Whispers at Lost Bastille

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 02:41 AM PDT

So the story is I was at Lost Bastille, just unpetrified Straid and started to read the item descriptions of his stuff when i heard some really silent eerie whispers in the background sounds. As i said It was almost unhearable and i never noticed it befoere, so I turned the voulme to max and started to listening. I waited like 2 minutes, and only heard some wolf howlings (that was kinda creepy and overlooked detail too!) and then i heard the whispering again. It was a female voice, and the most interesting of all, that as i heard, it was REVERSED so I didnt understand a damn word of it. The whispers whas like 6-7 secs long, then I they gone. When i waited some time again i heard it so. Can anyone explain this? What it symbolises? Has it something to do with the Lost sinner? Can someone reverse it again to finally understand the meanings of it? I can only recommend to try out and listen yourself, and write your toughts here!

NOTE: I strongly recommend to clear out all the mummies from there because their chain shaking sound makes it impossible to hear out.

EDIT: Do not lit the bonfire at Straid's cell cause its sounds mutes the background voices.

EDIT 2: I tried it out at Sinners Rise but maybe from the sea wawes i didnt hear any whispers and not even the wolf howls. So i guess its only works in Lost Bastille, and in silent areas.

EDIT 3: I Tried out some other places in LB like Lucatiel tower kr the firsr pusruer encounters place there, and i heard it there too! But the best place to listen it in my opinion is the "straid's cell" bonfire, with all mummyes cleared out and not litting the bonfire.

Rarest Items and how to get them?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 11:13 AM PDT

Let's talk rare items for a sec:

    1) Old Mirrah Greatsword

It's a very rare drop from one NPC that shows up only once per play through. I can't think of any other item in any souls game that has such a small chance of getting it, can y'all think of anything more rare?

Also, I kind of want one (even though it's kind of useless...), do y'all know of any way to get one other than spamming ascetics and hoping against all hopes?

    2) What do y'all think are the most rare items and how do y'all suggest getting them?

    Here's my take:

    A) Sun Sword - although it's a covenant item, it is difficult enough to get that I would consider it rare.

I would suggest burning through Heide's tower right off the bat, paying the miracle woman to move the gate, beating huntsman's and the boss, rushing through to get the sunlight bros, and then helping people with the first two bosses in the FoFG until you can't anymore. I managed to get 11 ish medals that way. Then go through the last bastille as fast as possible and pick up the agape ring from Straid. I then helped people with the Gargoyles for the rest, but just trolling around all the areas you have with the ring should do the trick. If it doesn't, set your sign down around the smelter demon once you get there for the rest. That's how I suggest getting it early, and it's a very useful weapon to have.

    B) Ruin Set / Black Dragon Set / Drakekeeper's Set

These can all be farmed, rare drops but not a problem with covenant of champions and all the time in the world. Ruin set can be farmed in Drangleic and the black dragon and Drakekeeper's can be farmed in Dragon Shrine. I suggest prisoners tatters, watch dragon Parma, jester's hat or symbol of Avarice, gold serpent ring, and rusted coins.

    C) Warlock Mask

Difficult to farm and useful but you can actually get it as a guaranteed drop from a petrified lion warrior in the shaded woods

    D) Cursed bone shield

Can be farmed from Aldia Warlocks, same suggestions for farming as above but covenant of champions highly recommended due to the small number of these enemies in the game. I suggest Aldia's keep for farming

    E) Black Witch set / veil

So secret secret time: you can get these all at once! If you light all of the torches in the gutter, you will be invaded by Gutter Denizen and if you defeat him, he will drop the set

    F) Mad Warrior's Set

I farmed these at belfry sol. And it took forever. I suggest same item discovery, clearing the other enemies from belfry sol (do not join covenant of champions) and then resting at the bonfire, checking the corner where the mad warrior sometimes spawns, and using the aged feather to go back to the bonfire if it's not there. If anyone has a better way of doing this PLEASE post, because this was haaaard.

So these are my takes at extra rare items in the game, again, I love this game so much for the fact that there is so much content and unlike the other souls games, there are items that are basically Easter eggs that are seemingly not even really meant to be acquired but you can get them. I just love it.

So if y'all know of any other super rare items and good ways of acquiring them, please share! I'm sure the community would appreciate some tips just as much as I would :)

I did more then 500 runs to find the best methods for farming Titanite Chunks - here's the results

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 02:18 PM PDT

or, I Farmed 600 Gyrm So That No One Else Has To

As requested, I spent the last couple days searching out and testing the different methods for farming Chunks. I found not only the single best method by far, but also the best methods for the early, mid, and late game as well.

Spreadsheet here, which has all of my data as well as detailed guides and notes for each method, plus some pretty charts and other info not included here.

    Let's jump in!

    Overview

    I tested four methods total:

    • Coal Tars
    • Gyrm Warriors
    • Harvest Valley Ascetic Runs
    • Giant Lord Ascetic Runs

I'll break them down into categories based on when in the game they become available - Early-Game, Mid-Game, and Late-Game.

Before we do that lets look at some...

    Highlights

    Chunks-per-Minute

    • Coal Tar - 0.7375
    • Gyrm Warrior - 0.1346 (Yes, really)
    • Harvest Valley Ascetic Run - 4.6092
    • Harvest Valley Ascetic Run + Farming an Ascetic from Aldia's Keep - 1.6276
    • Giant Lord Ascetic Runs - 43.6086

Of no surprise is how insanely OP the Giant Lord method is - it is by far the penultimate ultimate Chunk farming method, but also the one with the highest requirements: you have to beat the final boss first so you can buy Chunks with your Scrooge McDuck horde of Soul-bucks.

In second place is the Harvest Valley Ascetic Run, a method that was unknown to me until these tests. By burning an Ascetic in the first bonfire, you spawn 4 Chunks in the first poison pit. Not a bad deal, but also not sustainable without a supplementary farming method - enter the Aldia's Keep run, where you can pay 1 Ascetic to loot 2, but not until the end of the Mid-Game.

Alternatively, once you reach Drangleic Castle you can farm the Chasms of the Abyss, where all enemies have a roughly 20% ascetic drop rate, but Covenant of Champions doesn't work on them, and each time you ascetic you will have to fight a powered up Darklurker.

In third is the workhorse method, Coal Tars. I was actually surprised by how strong this turned out to be, when using the right strategy. Triple points for being available at any point, without fighting even a single boss.

In a place so far last that it's almost hard to believe and boasting the impressively bad CpM of 0.13, let's have a nice tepid pity clap for the Gyrm Warriors. I hate this method, and it is my hope that these tests will serve as the last time anyone so much as considers wasting precious moments of their life on that godawful slog of a run.

E: There's been some mention of using the Bell Keepers covenant for farming; it is certainly viable, but I didn't include it for a few reasons:

    1. It doesn't have the consistency of a testable method; there are many many variables involved in PvP, not the least of which is matchmaking time

    2. It would be outside the scope of this project, and even further outside the scope of my personal knowledge to write a guide for PvP with any guarantee of success

    3. I don't have good enough internet to play online so I couldn't test it regardless

    4. Most importantly, I want my guides and methods to be available to everyone, and not everyone can play online

That being said, if PvP is your thing, it's worth looking into!

    Now to break things down...

    Early-Game

This is everything within 3 or 4 bosses of starting the game. Our two methods under the spotlight are Coal Tars and Gyrm Warriors.

Besides the marked difference in quality, it's also worth noting that to farm Gyrms you must kill Scorpioness Najka, while Coal Tar can be farmed after only getting the Silvercat Ring. However, my method used a Fire Infused bow, requiring me to beat Dragonrider and Flexile or Last Giant and Pursuer before farming.

That being said, Coal Tars are obviously the best of the two, by a factor of at least 5.

    Coal Tar

Coal Tar performed much better then I expected, given my early experience farming them in my first play throughs. They were also by far the easiest method to do; just light each pool with a Wooden Arrow shot from a Fire Shortbow, wait a few seconds, rinse and repeat.

    Gyrm Warriors

Don't bother if you value your time or sanity.

I've literally never been so bored.

Little known fact: there's an ancient Gyrm law forbidding them from forming a passable farming route at any time. These bastards have a population density roughly equal to that of the Antarctic, their loot despawns if you blink too many times, and their drops are almost always D-tier.

    Run Info

    Coal Tar:

    • Total Runs - 250
    • Kills per Run - 4
    • Seconds per Kill - 6.102
    • Average Run Length - 24.408
    • Chunks per Minute - 0.7375
    • Chunks per Hour - 44.2484

    Gyrm Warrior:

    • Total Runs - 200
    • Kills per Run - 3
    • Seconds per Kill - 15.66
    • Average Run Length - 46.797
    • Chunks per Minute - 0.1346
    • Chunks per Hour - 8.0774

    Raw Drop Rates

    • Coal Tar - 19.20%
    • Gyrm Warrior - 9%

    Drop Rates by Item

    Coal Tar:

    • Large Shard - 11.7%
    • Chunk - 7.5%

    Gyrm Warrior:

    • Some Bullshit I Don't Want (Magic and Old Mundane Stones) - 5.5%
    • Chunk - 3.5%

    Mid-Game

For this breakdown, I'm considering Mid-Game to be everything up to getting the King's Ring.

So, there's some overlap here in that Coal Tars remain the most sustainable method of farming Chunks for much of the Mid-Game; all the way up until you reach Aldia's Keep, which fully opens up the next method: Harvest Valley Ascetic Runs.

    Run Info

Personally, I found this pair of runs not very enjoyable, but it's hard to argue with results. Even without the Aldia run, the ability to convert an Ascetic into 4 Chunks at will is very nice.

Here's some numbers on the two flavors of HV runs:

    No Ascetic Farming

    • Cost - Bonfire Ascetic x1
    • Loot - Chunk x4
    • Total Runs - 50
    • Average Run Time - 0:52.1
    • Chunks per Minute - 4.6092
    • Chunks per Hour - 276.5508

    With Ascetic Farming

    • Cost - Nothing
    • Loot - Chunk x4, Petrified Dragon Bone x2
    • Total Runs - 50
    • Average Run Time - 2:27.45
    • Chunks per Minute - 1.6276
    • Chunks per Hour - 97.6585

    Late-Game

Here's where things get crazy - the full Harvest Valley/Aldia's Keep run is in full effect, but now so is the numerical juggernaut Giant Lord run, which blows every other method away by orders of magnitude.

    Here's the numbers:

    • Total Runs - 25
    • Average Run Time - 1:56.46
    • Minimum Souls per Run - 507,882
    • Converted to Chunks per Run - 84.647
    • Chunks per Minute - 43.6086
    • Chunks per Hour - 2616.52

    Recap

    The Best Early-Game Method:

Absolute wash in favor of Coal Tars.

Frankly, I'm embarrassed on behalf of the Gyrm. Get your shit together my dudes.

    The Best Mid-Game Method:

I go against my heart, but I have to give it to the Harvest Valley Run. Even with Ascetic farming it more then doubles the output of the Coal Tar method, and gives some Petrified Dragon Bones to boot.

The Best Chunk Farming Method in the Game:

It's clearly the Giant Lord run. When I play casually, I don't bother farming chunks at all until I can buy Chunks using this farming route. It eclipses every other method without breaking a sweat.

And it's done. All the methods, all the runs, all the tests. Here's hoping this info is helpful to some people out there!

I think tha- no listen I know about the Tseldora Villager guys but that run is garbage I'm not doing it you gotta understa-

Don't forget to check the spreadsheet if you're interested in testing methodology, step-by-step guides, or pretty colors :D

I'll be back to working on Twinkling Titanite now, after a power nap or 10. Keep an eye out for that in the next week or so.

Thanks for reading, and happy farming!

This game deserves multiple playthroughs to get its full potential

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 01:02 AM PDT

I play all video games just for once. I can't play them for the second time because it just feels repetitive and boring. I just jump into other games.

But with souls series, especially DS2, there are so many possible builds that make you play this game again... For example I completed my first playthrough with str+int build... But I'm always curious about how its like to use miracles... how its like to use that super heavy body armor? how its like to use this extremely powerful shields? what about weapon in both hands setup.... I mean I can't type them all here, but I guess you got the point.. There are just SO MANY builds possible and playing with a different build is definitely game changer factor. It feels like you are playing a different game (at least this is what I think)

So yeah guys, as mentioned in the title I feel like you should play this game over and over so you can get its full "potential"

I have so many games in my backlog so I don't know what to do man, I want try new builds too lol

It’s been six years but I finally beat the Ancient Dragon.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 12:46 PM PDT

He's always felt extremely aggravating and tedious to fight. Since the game first came out I've had many fruitless runs against this frustrating behemoth. I tried again when Scholar came out and finally gave up after many infuriating attempts. I tried gyrm shield, I tried running for the tail, I tried summoning hell, I thought I had tried everything.

After a long time away from the game I've been doing another play through and really appreciating all the little touches that Dark Souls 2 got right. Power stancing is so much fun. Anyways, I got to Ancient Dragon and was feeling a little bored so I figured I'd give this guy another shot and told myself I'd walk away if I got frustrated. I also decided to totally disregard any of the tips and advice I had read about fighting him since none of it seemed to have worked in the past.

The first attempt went as expected, I got to his legs, started hitting, tried to watch for the air breath attack, but got roasted.

Second time I thought I'd try hitting him in the head instead. It was much easier to see what he was about to do when attacking big him from in front. I had lots of warning for the jump attack (all I had to do was run directly away from him) and was able to get in favourable positions when he breathed fire directly forward.

I beat him on my third attempt and was actually having fun fighting him. Suddenly I could read his tells and knew what to do in time to evade whatever he threw at me.

I would definitely recommended people try fighting him only attacking his head. Going for the legs seems to be where it is most difficult to get away from the jumping breath attack.

So I would have to say I’m a ds2 junkie, even if I haven’t played it in awhile, but it was my first game, and I’ve beat it around 7 or 8 times whereas I’ve only played all the other fromsoft games once or twice.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 01:06 PM PDT

My wife suggested a different game, so I started god of war 4 (I think, the one with the boy) and I barely made it an hour in before I started a new run of dark souls 1. I don't know why I can't get into other games, but I'm pretty sure fromsoft is to blame. Anyone else relate to this?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 12:17 PM PDT

Sorcery is actually good and fun in ds2?!

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 11:43 AM PDT

So I've done sorcery builds in the past I've done it on ds1 ds3 and an arcane build on bloodborne and they weren't great tbh (especially in pvp) in pve they felt nice but they were so easy to dodge in pvp and had very limited uses so I didn't want too do one in dark souls 2. But I've tried it today and it actually feels really fun and nice, the damage is good and you don't need too compromise much health for attunement so I can gladly say sorcery, pyromancies and miracles are best in dark souls 2.

    Recommended Armor/Helm for Darklurker?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 10:22 AM PDT

Hey, just doing a bit of prep for the Darklurker encounter, so I was wondering what might be the best armor to approach him with? From what I understand, since he does purely magic damage, Agdayne's Set would be helpful, but it lacks a helm.

I think Hatemail killed the social aspect of the game....

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 09:03 AM PDT

I've been playing through dark souls 2 recently again and I noticed that whenever I wanted to contact a player via PSN messages they always had the feature active that you can't message them unless you're in their friends list. It seems theres been to much hatemail going around people got fed up with it and just turned messages from strangers off so they won't get hatemail anymore. Sad byproduct of this mess is that you can't contact people anymore for questions about their builds, questions about co-op or requesting a rematch in pvp.

This is sad, we killed our own community with toxicity. Guess the times where I meet fun poeple while playing Souls games is over.

    Mace has.... Abnormally high stability??

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 04:08 AM PDT

I was comparing small hammer class weapons, and i noticed what seems to be really inconsequential, the mace has 40 stability, compared to 20 of it's class, so it can block like a great hammer.

So, if you want to 2 hand a mace and block with it for some reason, it works, i guess?

Do people even try to block with small weapons? Maybe when looking to back stab?
